The conviction of the parents of Shafilea Ahmed of her brutal murder has triggered a debate on the BBC. We will come to that in a moment. But first let's focus on what Mr Justice Roderick Evans said as he announced these savages would both serve a minimum of 25 years.

The judge told them: "Your concern about being shamed in your community was greater than the love of your child. The judge told them: "Your concern about being shamed in your community was greater than the love of your child."

That's all the BBC tells us. B ut if you go here, you find a little more detail that for some odd reason the BBC chose not to report. You see the judge also said;

'What was it that brought you two, her parents, the people who had given her life, to the point of killing her?' he asked them. 'You chose to bring up your family in Warrington but your social and cultural attitudes were those of rural Pakistan.

And then this...

'You wanted your family to live in Pakistan in Warrington. 'Although she went to local schools, you objected to her socialising with girls from what has been referred to as the white community. You objected to her wearing Western clothes and you objected to her having contact with boys.

In other words just for ONCE a Judge actually called out the Dark Ages mentality of some of those who come here from Pakistan.....and the BBC chooses to ignore it.

Instead, we get THIS nonsense on Today.

"How much do we know about concepts such as 'honour' and 'shame' which apparently motivate honour killings? "

We don't need to know anything beyond the fact that it is murder.

We do need to ask what is it about ISLAM that seems to encourage such abominably behaviour. The tribal heartlands of Pakistan and the values of those who live in them have NO place in British culture but if you say this, unambiguously, the BBC throw their hands up in faux horror.

Maybe it would do the BBC better to ponder how many more families are suffering from Pakistan values in modern Britain? Not all cultures are equal - as the terrible murder of this young girl by her own parents demonstrates. Instead of this the BBC looks to convoluted causes and explanations when in fact the motivation is obvious - it's just uncomfortable for them.

A Pakistani couple murdered their Westernised daughter because they were more concerned about shame in their community than about their children, a judge has said.

Iftikar and Farzana Ahmed, strict Muslims who are first cousins from the same village in Pakistan, were jailed for life after being found guilty of the 2003 honour killing of their ''determined'' and ''ambitious'' daughter Shafilea.

Your concern about being shamed in your community was greater than your love of your child.

Justice Roderick Evans

They were told they would serve at least 25 years.

They suffocated the 17 year-old in front of their four other children at their home in Warrington, Cheshire, after she rejected a forced marriage in Pakistan.

The couple escaped justice for almost nine years, accusing officers of victimisation and stereotyping for treating them as suspects after her body was found months later in a river in Cumbria.

Detectives made a breakthrough in 2010, when Shafilea's younger sister admitted having seen her mother and father kill their daughter.

Justice Roderick Evans, at Chester Crown Court, told the parents: ''Although you lived in Warrington, your social and cultural attitudes were those of rural Pakistan and it was those you imposed upon your children.

''She was being squeezed between two cultures, the culture and way of life that she saw around her and wanted to embrace, and the culture and way of life you wanted to impose upon her; an expectation that she live in a sealed cultural environment separate from the culture of the country in which she lived was unrealistic, destructive and cruel.''

He added: ''Your concern about being shamed in your community was greater than your love of your child.''

Shafilea, who was born in Bradford and dreamed of being a lawyer, was always aware that her parents wanted an arranged marriage for her in Pakistan.

Her father imposed his strict code despite having previously been married to a Danish woman, with whom he had a child and enjoyed drinking and discos. She left him after he married Farzana who was already pregnant.

In her teens Shafilea regularly clashed with her parents over clothing, money and especially boyfriends.

In 2003, after she had run away, they drugged her and put her on a flight to Pakistan, to be married to a man 10 years her elder. But while staying with her grandparents in rural Punjab, she deliberately swallowed bleach. Her throat was so badly damaged that she had to return home, preventing the marriage.

Back in Warrington, Shafilea was regularly locked in her room, starved and beaten. On September 11, 2003, Farzana picked her daughter up from her job. Seeing Shafilea in what she considered indecent clothes, she accused the girl of bringing shame on the family. At home, she pinned Shafilea down and told her husband in Punjabi: ''Just finish it here.'' The other children saw them force a plastic bag into her mouth and choke her to death.

The couple were arrested in December 2003, but when detectives held a public appeal for information, the Ahmeds gatecrashed and protested their innocence. Finally, in August 2010, police arrested Shafilea's younger sister Alesha on suspicion of organising a robbery at the family home. Alesha, who is now 21, told officers that she had seen her mother and father kill Shafilea.

During the trial the couple, with the support of three of their children, maintained their innocence. But after eight weeks, Farzana changed her story, claiming her husband had been behind the attack and she had supported him out of fear.

Shafilea's brother Junyad remained loyal to his parents. The judge said: ''I have no doubt that, as the result of the distorted upbringing and values to which you subjected him, he told his surviving sisters within minutes of them seeing Shafilea murdered by you that Shafilea deserved it.''

Poll: Were the 4-year sentences for inciting riots on Facebook appropriate?

Two men in the U.K. have each been sentenced to four years in jail for using Facebook to "organize and orchestrate" disorder.

Jordan Blackshaw, left, and Perry Sutcliffe-Keenan were each sentenced to four years. (Cheshire police)Jordan Blackshaw, 20, created a Facebook event called "massive Northwich lootin'," which included a date, time and location.

Perry Sutcliffe-Keenan, 22, made a page on Facebook called "Warrington Riots," also listing a date and time for people who wanted to get involved in the riot.

However, as The Guardian newspaper reported Wednesday, no looting or rioting resulted from either Facebook post .

"It was something which was started as a joke by Jordan," said Blackshaw's solicitor, Chris Johnson, in a BBC interview.

Defence lawyers and civil rights group say the sentences were not appropriate for these crimes.

"There seems to be a complete lack of proportionality to some of the sentences. These make a mockery of proportionality, which is a key principle of the justice system," Andrew Neilson, of the Howard League for Penal Reform, told the Times.

Neilson said the harsh sentences will likely be appealed, which will further bog down the court system.

British Prime Minister David Cameron defended the tough sentences. "They decided in that court ... to send a tough message and I think it's very good that courts are able to do that," he said.

Do you think the punishment fits the crime in this case? Why or why not? Let us know in the comments below.

B-29 Overexposed crash site

The Overexposed is a Boeing RB-29A Superfortress no. 44-61999 that crashed on Shelf Moor, Bleaklow in between Manchester and Sheffield, Derbyshire. It belonged to the 16th Photographic Reconnaissance Squadron, 91st Reconnaissance Group, 311th Air Division, Strategic Air Command, USAF.

The Overexposed tragically crashed at about 11am on 3rd November 1948 while descending through cloud. All 13 crew members died, it is doubtful they ever saw the ground. The time is estimated from one of the crew members wrist watch. The plane, piloted by Captain L P Tanner, was on a short flight, carrying mail and the payroll for American service personnel based at USAF Burtonwood. The flight was from Scampton near Lincoln to Burtonwood near Warrington, a flight of less than a hour. Low cloud hung over much of England and which meant the flight had to be flown on instruments. The crew descended after having flown for the time the crew believed it should have taken them to cross the hill. Unfortunately the aircraft had not quite passed the hills and struck the ground near Higher Shelf Stones and was destroyed by fire.

First on the scene were members of the Harpur Hill RAF Mountain Rescue Team, who had been in the area on training exercises when they picked up radio messages trying to locate the aircraft. Later on the same day, firemen from Glossop also attended the site but it was clear that there were no survivors. The following day, a large rescue team assembled to locate all the bodies and bring them off the moorland.

There are many cross shapes made from scraps of twisted and broken aircraft parts on the site, with poppies and wreaths. Scattered around are engines, rusting brake drums, wheels and undercarriage struts; elsewhere, a row of poppies have been planted beneath a section of the plane's wing. Time, weather and souvenir hunters have corroded and destroyed the massive pieces of the aircraft, but what is left make a strange and solemn memorial amid the wild bleak beauty of the moors.

THE mother of a teenage thug convicted of killing Garry Newlove has caused outrage after claiming her son is a victim, let down by an outdated legal system.

Jordan Cunliffe was jailed for 12 years in 2008 as a 16-year-old after being found guilty of murder through the law of joint enterprise.

He was prosecuted under the 300-year-old law by which a person can be convicted of murder for watching it happen and failing to act.

Cunliffe, 18, Adam Swellings, 21, and Stephen Sorton, 19, were all convicted of the murder of Mr Newlove in Warrington, Cheshire. The 47-year-old was kicked "like a football" as he confronted a gang.

Janet Cunliffe, 40, wants the "unfair" law reformed and says the injustice makes her "blood boil".

Rose Dixon, of Support After Murder and Manslaughter, said: "If you see something happening and do absolutely nothing to prevent it then you are just as guilty as if you had carried out the murder yourself."
