Parents & technology

These past couple of years, I hate certain "statements / comments" ... most of them are used by women, and all of these are from the "Twilight" movie series. I actually liked the first twilight movie, but then the series became "Twat-light". Bunch of twats running around and flying with super powers, with 30+ year California blondes cheering for them with panties soaked to the bone.

One particular line I hated was when "Bella" calls her mom, and mom says "I literally repel technology now." First time I heard my friendly over weight California blonde friend say it, I gave her a look (Some thing like this : o.0 ) and moved on.

But when several people started repeating that....

Anyway, need to focus away from ranting at Twat... errrr Twilight and Chubby Blondes.

Being a MSEE and working with technology all my life, I abhor people who don't take the time to understand basics. Its not complicated, and saying "Math is tough!" is NEVER cool! If a 10 year old can do it, then so can you.

So when the time came for my parents to try the new gifts I sent them, I was a bit apprehensive, but overall a little confident that Dad could figure it out.

A bit of a background : Dad holds a MSEE too, and worked as a Navy officer then a Senior Director for a Defense company. The guy has the Macguyver touch towards fixing everything. Yes, it was never polished and finely done, but he knew how to use every tool, fix everything. Right from shoes to refrigerators to complicated Nuclear submarines.

Ergo, the "high expectations".

So it starts off with them getting the gifts, which include computing, home entertainment, communication, and cooking products - all electronic. All purchased in the US, consequently 110V rated. I purchased them a AC to AC transformer and wrote down the operation on paper and made an instructional video (look up my channel) on how to use it.

So first night the gifts come in, Dad is missing the only component : a plug adapter : which converts an American Male plug to an Indian Male, so it can fit the Indian female wall socket. I calmly explain that ONLY the laptop's power cord can be directly fitted to the wall socket, since it is rated from 100v to 250V and all the rest need to be plugged to a power strip which is sourced from the AC to AC transformer.

I know Dad. If you cross the thought process of a mule with a heavy load climbing a steep slope and a 100 lb German Shepherd being taken to a bath and mix in the emotions of 50,000 sheep being taught the alphabet at MIT's space research laboratory, you will get to around 1/100th part of the obstinacy that my dad was inherently born with. And that obstinacy has exponentially grown over time. It is now to the extent, that if he visits a hospital, all women in labor need to have C-Sections since his mere presence affects the babies and makes them obstinate enough to not come out on their own.

Dad got the power adapter, which they call "China plug" in India, and then did not call me. He wanted to prove to Mom he could do it all by himself, and he started his engineering efforts brilliantly.

Literally.

He plugged in a D-Link wireless router (Priced at $55) directly to the wall, and made sparks to fly, as the 240V power fried the innards mercilessly. He was proceeding to test certain theories on the Cordless home phone system with multiple hand sets, when unluckily I called.

What could have been an interesting series of pops, crackles and a nice smell of ozone in the air was cut short, since I demanded he cease and desist.

Of course his comment was I had sent garbage, which was already damaged on arrival. And he proceeded to prove his theory by throwing an expensive piece of electronic equipment to the wall.

As per my Dad, violence always serves as a statement of truth. It was nary a week I had welts on my back where he had severely thrashed me, since I was playing cricket in the apartment grounds, instead of studying for my 4th grade exams. But thats a different story.

Mom was a nervous wreck, and there was a happy yelling match in progression when I interrupted. Now the funniest thing was: since we were on video chat on skype, and they were sharing one head set, it escaped their angry minds that if I am saying some thing, then it is being heard by only the person with the head set on his/hear ears. So naturally every time either assumed that the other MUST have heard what I said and proceeded to rant loudly at the other when the other goofed and did not follow the instructions given by me.

They made things a bit more interesting by putting things down and then promptly forgetting where they had put it. And with the tempers flaring, they rapidly forget the statements I had said, or jumbled them up.

This went on through three 45 minute skype calls, and I kid you not, even as a healthy young man, I had chest pains after every call!

Finally on the 4th call, I asked mom to put everything aside and write down what ever I said. I went through some basic electrical engineering, explaining DC and AC electricity, transformers, switches, etc.

In so far, 3 pieces of rather expensive electronic items have been destroyed. And I shudder to think what will happen next when we finish the first step of connecting the damn pre configured IBM Laptop to the internet and move to the home phone system or the entertainment system.

Bottom line : Don't give your parents technology, give them cash!

How an onstage Q&A with the great drummer turned into a professional horror show

Link to video: Beware of Mr Baker: Q&A with Ginger Baker

The video above doesn't really capture the full horror of my thankfully brief time with Ginger Baker . It was an onstage Q&A at the Curzon Soho cinema in London, after a screening of the excellent documentary Beware of Mr Baker , and the best that can be said is that - having already seen the film - I knew what to expect.
The title alone tells you pretty much all you need to know - but in the course of the film scores of collaborators and family members outline that while he may be one of the greatest musicians these shores have ever produced, Baker isn't all that much of a pleasure to be around. Mind you, you don't need other people to tell you that; the evidence is there in the interviews with him, in which scorn is poured on more or less everyone. I recall him being nice about his stepdaughter by his fourth marriage, about his American jazz drumming heroes, about Eric Clapton - who's rather more guarded in return - and pretty much no one else. It is uncomfortable viewing.

We were introduced, briefly, before the Q&A. Baker was reclining, eyes closed, in an armchair in the cinema's bar. A man from the film's distributor attempted to introduce me - so we could get the measure of each other - and received the barest twitch of an eyelid. I sat down next to him and said I would be doing the Q&A with him. No response - he's hard of hearing these days - so I repeated myself. Eventually I got the response: "No you're fucking not. The audience is." OK.

I wasn't surprised. This, I was later told, is a man who not long ago reduced one veteran rock writer - famed as the nicest, most equable man in the business - to expressing his desire to hit Baker, after one particularly fruitless encounter. A man secure in his contempt for those he doesn't believe to be his equal - and when you're the greatest ever British drummer, you don't have many equals.

It was all downhill from the introduction. Our video omits most of the times Baker dismissed my questions, or raised his eyebrows in disgust. It omits the one-word answers, by and large. It omits his more withering reponses to questions from the audience. It leaves out the 15-second pause where I simply sat in silence, wishing the earth would swallow me whole. It leaves out Baker deciding he's had enough with the words "I want to go home now." You may able to note the one point where I have just about had enough, and my voice tightens and quickens while I ask another "silly question". It doesn't sound much on the video, but it was an effort of will to get a question out instead of telling him what I thought of his rudeness.

I'm told it made good viewing. And afterwards several audience members told me that at least I should consider it a success not to have turned into a gibbering wreck. I'm reminded of Simon Hattenstone's interview with Lou Reed for the Guardian a decade ago, where Simon - under the Lou death glare - finally cracked: "Why are you so aggressive to me? What have I done to you? Why are you being so horrible." The difference for me is that Ginger Baker was never my hero, so he couldn't disappoint me. But the single question I'd most like to have asked Ginger Baker - and which should have been asked in the film - is a variant on Simon's: Why are you such an unpleasant man? What possible benefit does it bring you? After all, you don't watch Beware of Mr Baker and think: he might be a tosser, but at least he's happy. In fact, he just seems filled with anger and bitterness.

I've had peculiar interviews before. I once sat on the floor in the dressing rooms at Spurs' training ground to talk to Sol Campbell, while John Scales stood just to my right, listening in. He was naked. His penis kept dangling in and out of my eyeline at disconcertingly close range. But I've never had any interview experience quite so unsettling as half an hour with Ginger Baker in front of a couple of hundred people. It's not something I want to repeat.

Right. Who's got Lou Reed's phone number?

Why Barack Obama's imperial presidency is imploding

By Nile Gardiner World Last updated: May 16th, 2013
This has been a nightmare week for Barack Obama, without a doubt the worst of his presidency so far. Steven T. Miller, acting commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service has resigned over his agency's targeting of conservative groups, which even The Washington Post labeled this morning a "horror story" . Yesterday Obama's Attorney General Eric Holder testified before the House Judiciary Committee on a host of issues including the Benghazi debacle, in what can only be described as a train wreck of a performance. Holder was simply unable or unwilling to answer most key questions, and demonstrated a level of contempt for elected officials in Congress that was breathtaking. It was yet another public relations disaster for the Obama team.

In addition the administration has come under heavy fire over the Justice Department's monitoring of phone records belonging to Associated Press journalists. All this has combined to create a perfect storm in the first year of Obama's second term, a wave of scandals that has been so damaging to the standing of this administration that even The New York Times today carries the headline on its front page: "An Onset of Woes Raises Questions on Obama Vision" . When even the usually subservient inflight newspaper of Air Force One has doubts over the job the president is doing you know the situation is really desperate for The White House.

George F. Will, one of America's most influential political commentators, and a columnist for The Washington Post, believes there are "echoes of Watergate" in both the IRS and Benghazi scandals. As Will wrote earlier this week:

The burglary occurred in 1972, the climax came in 1974, but40 years ago this week - May 17, 1973 - the Senate Watergate hearings began exploring the nature of Richard Nixon's administration. Now the nature of Barack Obama's administration is being clarified as revelations about IRS targeting of conservative groups merge with myriad Benghazi mendacities.

Will doesn't go as far as saying that Barack Obama will suffer the same fate as Nixon. After all, Obama benefits from a Senate controlled by the Democrats. But there is no denying the parallels between the sense of impunity in this White House and that of Richard Nixon's four decades ago. In fact it's considerably worse on many fronts.

Political analyst Michael Barone warned back in October 2008 of what he called "The Coming Liberal Thugocracy," referring to then Senator Obama's call for his supporters "to get in their face" when confronting Republicans and Independents. Barone argued at the time that "Obama supporters who found the campuses congenial and Mr. Obama himself, who has chosen to live all his adult life in university communities, seem to find it entirely natural to suppress speech they don't like and seem utterly oblivious to claims this violates the letter and spirit of the First Amendment."

Barone's predictions have been proved correct. As I've noted in previous pieces, this is a nasty, brutish, imperial-style presidency that is highly intolerant of dissent, and which goes out of its way to target political opponents. It is ironic that one of the journalists threatened by the Obama White House in recent months has been Bob Woodward, one of two Washington Post reporters who originally broke the Watergate scandal, and who was immortalised in the 1976 Oscar winner All The President's Men , where he was played by Robert Redford. Woodward was warned back in February by White House economic adviser Gene Sperling that he would "regret" remarks he made on the sequester issue. Other writers, including Bill Clinton's former special counsel Lanny Davis, have faced similar threats.

Is it any surprise that conservative groups have been targeted en masse by the federal government following the kind of deeply unpleasant rhetoric used by Vice President Joe Biden, who supported the charge by Democrat Congressman Mike Doyle of Pennsylvania that Tea Party Republicans had "acted like terrorists" over the debt issue? Biden has been a master of this kind of divisive, heated language, telling union members at an AFL-CIO rally in Detroit in September 2011 that "you are the only folks keeping the barbarians from the gates." At the same rally, Teamsters president Jimmy Hoffa declared : "President Obama, this is your army, and we are ready to march. Everybody here's got a vote. If we go back, and we keep the eye on the prize, let's take these son of a bitches out and give America back to America where we belong." Needless to say, President Obama remained silent on both the Biden and Hoffa remarks, and in the following year called on his supporters to take "revenge" against Republicans at the ballot box.

This week, thanks to unprecedented levels of Congressional and mainstream media scrutiny of the actions of the Obama administration, the American people have been given a powerful insight into the way in which this presidency has operated. For far too long, the Obama administration has acted like an imperial court rather than a government that is accountable to the nation. The White House's culture of arrogance and impunity, coupled with a deeply unpleasant vindictiveness, is increasingly there for all to see. Suppression of political dissent, a callous disregard for the loss of American life in Benghazi, and the relentless rise of big government - these will be three of the most of enduring images of Barack Obama's imperial presidency.
