By Jason H. Harper - Jun 13, 2013 12:01 AM ET
Talk about pricing what the market will bear. How about $280,000 for an old Dodge pickup? Or $190,000 for a 1950s station wagon-cum-jalopy covered in rust?

These are the kind of prices Jonathan Ward, owner and head designer of Los Angeles-based custom automobile maker Icon charges -- and he still has a year-long backlog of orders.

"My customer is a guy who loves the aesthetic of old vehicles but doesn't want to put up with a lousy ride, the creaks and rattles and breakdowns," Ward says.

Icon sources older models such as Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40s, Ford (F) Broncos and Jeep CJs and marries their exteriors to all-modern chassis and powertrains. They look old but drive like new. Ward also adds one-off (and often wacky) details like hidden navigation systems and sun visors taken from private jets.

At first glance the $280,000 pickup truck looks like a well-maintained 1965 Dodge D200. Then you notice that the behemoth has four doors and a reworked grill. The lights are LEDs and the tires ludicrously oversized.

The double set of side windows have an Art Deco shape and the glass itself has an odd, reflective quality (it's special glass used in skyscrapers). Open a door and a running board slides out from under the vehicle automatically, making it easier to enter.

Mega CabWard and his crew spent a year on the Dodge, removing body panels from the original truck and reworking them to fit the chassis of a heavy-duty 2007 Dodge Mega Cab 3500. The suspension was upgraded and a 5.9-liter Cummins (CMI) turbo-diesel six-cylinder installed. The engine was specially tuned to produce 975 pound-feet of torque and 575 horsepower.

That incredible power sounds like hyperbole, but as I discover on a test drive along California 's Highway 1, it is not. Ward is riding shotgun as I negotiate the precarious curves and find that I rarely need to shift -- the engine pulls like a locomotive even in fifth gear.

The long stick from the six-speed manual transmission pokes up from the footwell and takes a strong hand. As does the oversized, leather-bound steering wheel, which only adds to the impression that you're driving a tractor-sized vehicle.

Rolls' RugsThe roof is padded with bison hide and the thick carpets underfoot pilfered from a Rolls-Royce. While the radio looks like an old AM unit, it actually operates a bumping stereo system. A digital information screen slides out of a compartment in the dash.

The truck was a special order for a client from Wyoming , but Ward says, "I really don't want to give this one up." I sympathize with him. I feel like I'm driving the king of trucks.

Still, good luck reconciling the mind-boggling price, which is partly a result of Ward's near-maniacal obsession with details. Some of the underpinnings (which you'll never see) are aeronautical grade, and though the switches and knobs are the same shape as the originals, Ward mills them out of metal.

His business has grown every year, he says, but the level of specificity slows production. Though Icon moved into a larger shop and delivered 30 vehicles in 2012, Ward says it is difficult to keep up with orders. His best-seller is the reworked Land Cruiser, which starts at around $130,000.

Stepping out of the Dodge with relief (you don't want to mess up a vehicle before the buyer takes delivery), I move over to one of Ward's personal rides, a literal rust bucket.

Addams FamilyNominally, the car is a 1952 Chrysler Town & Country Wagon with the front end of a DeSoto grafted on. With a teeth-like grill, a rusted patina and rubbed-off paint, it looks like it could have belonged to the Addams Family 's Uncle Fester.

But no. As one of Ward's "Derelict" series, it goes for $190,000. "It's super fast. You can hammer the curves with it," Ward explains handing me the keys. I have my doubts, but turn it toward the winding canyon roads.

The steering wheel and wood flooring are all original, but the guts of the thing certainly aren't. The sound of the modern 6.1-liter V-8 Hemi reverberates through the cabin and the five-speed automatic transmission clicks through gears promptly.

The suspension ably handles dips and curves. Yet my subconscious is telling me the car is going to fall apart at any moment. Since this is Ward's daily driver, I turn the wheel over to him.

He promptly sends us hurtling down cliff-side roads, tires shrieking and brakes smoking. I look into the abyss on the passenger side and momentarily lose my breath: For $190,000 you don't get airbags or modern safety restraints -- only a simple lap belt.

Heavy hail fall today at work. Just a short clip from the base of the control tower and in the tower cab looking west and north. Had some insane wind a few days ago (Approaching nearly 70mph) that destroyed an aircraft fuel pump, but sadly I had the day off. :P Shot on my IPhone 4S (So sorry about the quality... but I did shoot in landscape... unlike most idiot IPhone users.) Sadly didn't have my Canon T4i with me today.

Are Chinese spy ships in U.S. waters?

This is interesting. After decades of American surveillance operations off China's coast, the Chinese military may be starting to respond in kind, according to reports coming out of the giant Asian security confab known as the Shangri-La Dialogue, which took place in Singapore over the weekend.

While Chinese surveillance ships (the ship shown above is technically a Chinese satellite tracking ship, but pics of Chinese spy vessesl aren't exactly all over Getty Images) and aircraft won't be skirting the fringes of the California coast anytime soon, they may have already begun sniffing around Guam and Hawaii, writes former Australian diplomat Rory Medcalf, now with the Lowy Institute for International Policy -- an Australian think tank -- who attended the conference.

It was striking to hear a Chinese military officer reveal in an open discussion at this conference today that China had 'thought of reciprocating' by 'sending ships and planes to the US EEZ ', and had in fact done so 'a few times', although not a daily basis (unlike the US presence off China).

This was news to me. It turns out, from discussions with several maritime security experts in the margins of the conference, that rumours have been circulating for some time of China sending ships on missions to waters off US territory -- not the continental US, but probably Hawaii and possibly Guam too. Still, this is the first time any of us can recall this point being made on the public record.

This would fit with China's rapid buildup of military technology, which seems aimed at allowing Beijing to project military power throughout the Western Pacific. In recent years the Chinese military has fielded ballistic missiles meant to keep American aircraft carriers far from its shores; stealth jets like the J-20, which appear to be designed to either strike American ships and bases or intercept U.S. bombers; a stealthy UAV similar to the U.S. Navy's concept for a long-range stealth drone that can penetrate advanced air defenses; an aircraft carrier (with more on the way); new destroyers equipped with Aegis-style radars; submarines and replenishment ships; and a new fleet of maritime surveillance and radar planes.

Medcalf points out that China used to dangerously confront U.S. surveillance ships and aircraft, claiming they were violating the "sovereignty" of its exclusive economic zone, which extends 200 nautical miles from shore (and is not actually considered sovereign territory under international law). China may now have realized this strategy wasn't working and decided instead use the same tactic to gather intel on U.S. activities.

We might even see more Chinese surveillance ships and perhaps carrier-based surveillance planes in the waters off U.S.-owned Islands, or perhaps the Eastern Pacific, as the PLA Navy gets more comfortable conducting lengthy cruises in waters far from home in the coming decades.

http://killerapps.foreignpolicy.com/posts/2013/06/03/are_chinese_spy_ships_in_us_waters

U.S. commanders have also confirmed that China "had started reciprocating' the US navy's habit of sending ships and aircraft into the 200-nautical-mile zone off China's coast," according to the Financial Times.

Lest the paranoids arise over Chinese black helicopters over Wyoming and South Carolina, or Chinese troops in Mexico, it's important to note that an Exclusive Economic Zone, which gives a nation rights over natural resources such as fish and undersea minerals, comprises more than 12 million square kilometers for the U.S., including the East and West Coasts, Hawaii, Alaska and Puerto Rico, and various Pacific islands such as Guam, Wake and American Samoa. Thus China can tweak America's nose by sending patrol flights off distant Pacific possessions rather than Honolulu or Los Angeles.

From an intelligence collection standpoint, one hacker with a laptop in Shanghai can probably learn more than a hundred Chinese surveillance flights off Guam. Unlike the Soviets who turned Cuba into a gigantic listening post, China doesn't have bases near the U.S., but it does have spy satellites. Besides, I'd be less interested in Chinese warships and more interested in what all those Chinese merchant vessels in U.S. ports are really up to.

In other words, this is not a security and intelligence issue, but a political one, and one that the U.S. has no moral standing to complain about. Ever since the Communists took over China in 1949, the U.S. has been operating surveillance flights along (and sometimes inside) its territory. Sometimes they were shot down in Cold War days, but even as late as 2001, a U.S. Navy EP-3 radio intelligence aircraft collided with a Chinese J-8 interceptor, and there are still confrontations today. Which is why these kinds of surveillance operations have the potential to become something worse.

US Teen Builds Nuclear Fusion Reactor in Dad's Garage

WASHINGTON, June 3 (RIA Novosti) - A US teenager has built a nuclear fusion reactor in his dad's garage, he told RIA Novosti on Monday, adding his name to a select group of a dozen high school students from around the world who have achieved fusion with homemade devices.

Conrad Farnsworth's reactor is small and built with parts he ordered online.

The 18-year-old from Newcastle, Wyoming, built the device as his entry for the prestigious Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), in which thousands of high school students from around the world compete for $4 million in scholarships, prize money, prestige and things to put on their resumes.

Farnsworth's homemade reactor did not win the ISEF competition , but it did allow him to add his name to a very short list of youngsters who have created nuclear fusion reactors. Most of them are American, with the exception of Michal Racko of Slovakia.

As Farnsworth's achievement made the news in the United States, older science nerds wondered if the Wyoming teen and the other youngsters had, in fact, built their own reactors and achieved fusion, or if the US media were getting it wrong.

"...Fifteen high school students in the world have built nuclear fusion reactors. How is this possible?" asked Joel on a physics chat forum.

"It's possible that the newspaper reporters didn't understand the distinction between an accelerator and a reactor," said Ben Crowell on the forum.

Farnsworth told RIA Novosti in an email that the reactor he built "is an accelerator of sorts, using electrostatic attraction (- attracting +).

"Sometimes collisions between hydrogen (deuterium) nuclei occur and sometimes those collisions actually fuse the nuclei together. It's all a game of probability," he said.

Back on the grown-up physics chat forum, Terry Bollinger wondered if the homemade reactor was able to generate "useful net outputs of energy."

"That you cannot do even in the most advanced fusion test center in existence," Bollinger noted.

Farnsworth says on his website that "amateur reactors will never produce power; their main purpose is education."

He told RIA Novosti on Monday that "there will never EVER... be a net power output or anywhere close to a net power output" from his reactor.

"If I were ever able to generate useable power out of this, I would be long dead from the radiation poisoning that would ensue," he added.

That's not to say that nuclear power achieved by fusion is unsafe. The energy form has been touted as having the potential to provide almost limitless supplies of clean, safe and sustainable energy without the downsides of nuclear power produced by fission.

Today's nuclear power plants produce energy by splitting apart the heavy atoms of uranium fuel - fission -- while fusion reactors fuse together atoms.

Unlike nuclear-fission power plants, fusion reactors do not produce high-level radioactive waste and cannot be used for military purposes.

"But the reason it would kill me is because I have no way of shielding myself from the radiation coming from my device, other than using distance," Farnsworth said.

"A professional, power-generating reactor would be shielded and much safer."

Among the other teens who have built nuclear fusion reactors are 15-year-old Thiago Olson, whose device produced just enough heat to warm up a cup of coffee , and Taylor Wilson, who is, so far, the youngest fusion reactor builder, completing his at the age of 14.

Farnsworth's reactor was not enough to win him ISEF, which was held last month in Phoenix.

He was, in fact, disqualified on a technicality , and the overall competition was won by 19-year-old Romanian Ionut Budisteanu, who took home a check for $75,000 for his model of an affordable, self-driving car that detects traffic lanes and curbs and notes the real-time position of the car.

Budisteanu's car would cost around $4,000 to make -- roughly the same as a small, homemade nuclear fusion reactor

By Marilisa Sachteleben
 Fri, May 24, 2013
There's been a lot of discussion lately about what Detroit needs. Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder appointed Kevyn Orr emergency manager over Motown several months ago. If Orr can't get the books in order in the next six weeks, the city faces possible bankruptcy, reports Reuters. Why is the once-glorious birthplace of the automobile in so much trouble? On Monday, May 27, PBS Independent Lens airs an important film, "Detropia," that explores the crisis in Detroit. Here are some issues presented in the documentary.

Detropia Expose

"Detropia," a Loki Films project, is not just a film drive-by of Detroit ruins. It glances at Michigan Central Station and old auto factories. It catalogs demolition of some of the 100,000 derelict homes in the city. Under current Mayor Dave Bing, 10,000 were leveled, says CNN Money. The vast majority remain, blighting the landscape. But "Detropia" didn't win its multiple "Best Documentary" awards (including one at the auspicious Sundance Film Festival) by romanticizing the ruins or hand-wringing over rubble. It digs under the burned-out-building images to the stories underneath.

Detroit Money Crisis

Why does a city that was once the Arsenal of Democracy (Detroit Historical Society) now resemble a battlefield? How does a town that once had to import workers to fill jobs now struggle with 18.3 percent unemployment (says CNN Money)? It's more than double the national average and triple 2000 figures. What needs to happen to fix a deficit that's pushing $380 million and a city that owes nearly $15 billion? "Detropia" considers these questions.

Personal Problems

Detroit's population has dropped significantly since 2012, says CNN Money. According to a 2011 New York Times report, the drop comes on top of a 25-percent loss in the previous decade. Detroit has seen the biggest population shift of any city, including post-Katrina New Orleans. "Detropia" delves into problems of living in a collapsing urban area.

Safety

Crime is huge. Detroit has a lot of space to be responsible for; the city sprawls over nearly 140 square miles, says the United States Census Bureau. But budget cuts mean layoffs and fewer police to patrol, says CNN. A 2009 Federal Bureau of Investigations report found Detroit had the highest homicide rate in the U.S., says the Baltimore Sun. A 2011 report showed Detroit murders up 12 percent from 2010, though overall crime statistics had dropped, says the Detroit Free Press. Four Detroit areastopped NeighborhoodScout's "Top 25 Most Dangerous Neighborhoods" report: Wyoming at Orangelawn (No. 7), Gratiot at Rosemary (No. 3), Mack at Helen (No. 2), and West Chicago at Livernois (No. 1). "Detropia" looks at how people are coping amid these problems.

Conclusions

"Detropia" doesn't necessarily answer Detroit's problems, but it highlights "vibrant, gutsy characters" who refuse to give up on their city (says Loki Films). These "soulful pragmatists and stalwart philosophers" work to stay afloat and make Detroit work. Their loyalty is helping to redefine and evolve the Motor City from an industry-based economy to something new and different. I talked to one such visionary, Rev. David Alexander Bullock of Change Agent Consortium, a Detroit advocacy group. The city faces an upcoming mayoral election, says the Associated Press. Rev. Bullock discussed what kind of people Detroit needs in leadership. He said it should be those who "aren't afraid to stand for the people of Detroit." "Detropia" features folks doing just that.

An educator, Michigan native, and political junkie, Marilisa Sachteleben writes about issues in her state's most pivotal city of Detroit.

Westboro Baptist Church Chickens Out Of Protesting Oklahoma Tornado Victims' Funerals

The Westboro Baptist Church threatened to picket funerals for victims of the Oklahoma tornado, but once again the members of the anti-gay church were nowhere to be seen.

The Wichita-based church has made a living out of turning tragic events into a chance to spread homophobic messages - or at least threatening to. The church sends members to protest at funerals of soldiers and notable people, with signs decrying America and its acceptance of gay lifestyles.
The church gained fame for its protest of gay Wyoming college student Matthew Shepherd, but in recent days it has been all bark and no bite.

Members threatened to protest at memorial services for victims of the theater shooting in Aurora, Colorado, last July. The threatened again to protest at funerals for children killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School , for those killed in the Boston Marathon bombing, and most recently threatened to protest for victims of the tornado that struck on Monday in Moore, Oklahoma.

In all of those times, church members never showed up.

Had the Westboro Baptist Church not chickened out of going to Moore, they would have been met by a wall of counter-protesters. The Patriot Guard Riders , a group of motorcycle riders who arrive to block mourners from seeing the church's anti-gay messages, were in Moore in full force.

The riders lined the streets, creating a wall for the funeral procession of a young boy killed.

Another picture posted to the link-sharing site Reddit showed a long row of motorcycles, with riders ready to face the Westboro Baptist Church that would never show.

Westboro Baptist Church members did try to take advantage of the tragedy behind the safety of a computer screen .

Fred Phelps Jr., the son of Westboro Baptist Church minister Fred Phelps, blamed the destructive tornado on Oklahoma City Thunder star Kevin Durant . Ignoring the meteorological reasons explaining the tornado, and the fact that Moore sits in the midst of "Tornado Alley," Phelps insisted that the tornado really struck was because God was mad that Durant supported gay player Jason Collins.

He tweeted: "OK Thunder's Durant flips God by praising fag Collins. God smashes OK. You do the math."

Even though its members never showed up to Moore, the Westboro Baptist Church was still thwarted in its attempt to take advantage of the tragedy. A hacker took over the church's site "God Hates Oklahoma," showing a picture mocking the church before redirecting to a Red Cross site accepting donations for tornado victims.

The 28-year-old University of Wyoming student who allegedly threatened herself with rape in a Facebook hoax in April was convicted of aggravated assault in 2005 after she brandished a gun at an employer who fired her.

Meg Lanker-Simons, now a newly-minted UW graduate, was charged with interference with a police investigation
after she allegedly posted on an anonymous Facebook forum that she
wanted to engage in angry sexual intercourse - with someone named "Meg
Lanker Simons."

The posting on UW Crushes read:

"I want to hatefuck Meg Lanker Simons so hard. That chick
runs her liberal mouth all the time and doesn't care who knows it. I
think its so hot and makes me angry. One night with me and shes gonna be
a good Republican bitch."

It turns out that the April 24 incident isn't the strident leftist's
first rodeo in Wyoming's criminal system. As the Laramie Boomerang reports, Lanker-Simons had an aggravated assault conviction in 2005 as the result of a bizarre gun-brandishing incident.

After Lanker-Simons was fired from a radio station in the fall of
2005, she returned and pulled a Glock 22 .40 caliber handgun from her
purse. She waved the semi-automatic pistol around.

She pointed it at the
man who sacked her. He testified that he was "in fear for his life," notes the Boomerang.
The radio station was evacuated.

Police caught Lanker-Simons as she
tried to flee the scene in her vehicle. They held her at gunpoint.

In July 2006, Lanker-Simons - then known as Meghan Michelena - was
sentenced to six years of probation. Her term of probation was subject
to a number of conditions. She had to undergo counseling, complete
community service, pay fines and apologize to her victims. She was also
prevented from owning any guns.

The alleged Facebook hoax brought national attention to the Cowboy
State's flagship college. Initially, the administration stood firmly
behind Lanker-Simons. "No student should have to deal with such
threatening language," said one sternly-worded official statement. A
school official also denounced "rape culture," according to KOWB.
Concerned fellow feminists also threw a rally for Lanker-Simons - complete with all manner of signs condemning rape threats - before police concluded that Lanker-Simons herself was behind the threats.

This month, Lanker-Simons participated in the University of Wyoming's
commencement ceremonies despite the charges against her. She graduated
with a bachelor's degree in psychology.
Lanker-Simons is also a blogger and a local radio host.

In 2010, Lanker-Simons and Bill Ayers sued the University of Wyoming
after school officials decided to cancel a speech by Ayers, a former
Weather Underground radical and mentor to President Obama. Also in 2010,
her husband, Andrew Simons, ran a failed Democratic campaign for
Wyoming secretary of state.

According to the Boomerang, the interference charge is a misdemeanor
punishable by a prison sentence up to a year and a fine up to $1,000.

Canadian Governor General Spokesman Craven Moorhead has announced last
friday on the Global Warming solution for our future. 'Project Polar
Ice' is estimated at costing the Canadian Government upwards to
750,000,000 Dollars (US), which works out to be approximately
625,000,000 Smarties (Canadian currency). With help of Chinese
Scientists building the Worlds Largest Air Conditioner should be
finished as soon as 2025. No details as of yet on how large the
construction on the AC will be, we can only speculate that it will be
about the size of the American state Wyoming. The unit will be
constructed in Western Canada's Vancouver Island then will be pulled up
North by Canada's largest Tug boat 'Theodore' then to be stationed at a
undisclosed location.

for the water (training) or retardant (actual fire). The ForestService conducts the training
for the two wings from the Wyoming Air National Guard Base, at the Cheyenne, Wyo.,
Regional Airport. The wings are two of the four Air Force units which fly MAFFS
