Cunnecticut Gun Owners: What Second Amendment?

All this could have been prevented if they just passed a bill making it
illegal to kill your mother and steal her firearms and take those
firearms to a school and use them to shoot people, and have it
retroactively come into effect last year. Oh wait, all those things are
already illegal...

Good to see that the senator's main concern is making sure he gets the funding.
They're using the same anti-gun play book that was used here (Canada) in the late 80's early 90's.
Many gun laws are put in effect only to be taken to the Supreme Court,
where the laws get shot down buy way of Fifth Amendment Rights. I'm sure
this will be no different. Giving a U.S. citizen a prison term for
having a firearm is a violation of F A Rights. I will be watching to see
how this plays out.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Connecticut gun law: Breakdown of when new rules go into effect

HARTFORD - New gun controls in Connecticut may have set off
discussions by some manufacturers over whether or not to leave the state
and a myriad of questions from dealers, but for citizens interested in
buying guns going forward, the best way to approach the new rules is to
look at when they go into effect.

The revisions, adopted almost three months after lawmakers looked for
consensus in working groups and their leaders took weeks to negotiate
the terms, are touted as among the strongest in the nation. Connecticut
also has begun to address improvements in mental health services and
school security as part of the comprehensive law.

The bipartisan deal was the state's response to the slaughter of 20
first-graders and six educators at Sandy Hook Elementary School in
Newtown Dec. 14 by lone gunman Adam Lanza, who used a Bushmaster AR-15
semiautomatic rifle to shoot 154 rounds in less than five minutes; the
victims each were shot between 3 and 11 times.

Both sides were passionate in their positions on gun control, with
opponents accusing lawmakers of going too far in regulating firearms and
not far enough in addressing mental health services; proponents
criticized the failure to ban possession of magazines over 10 rounds.

Everyone agreed on the necessity of implementing known strategies to
improve behavorial health and aligning insurance coverage, and some of
that is part the new law. A continuing review of mental health access is
ongoing, with a final report not due until the end of the year.

Adoption of the total package, however, with affirmative votes from both
Republicans and Democrats, is being held up as a model for Washington
to follow.

EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY

ASSAULT WEAPONS BAN: The state's ban on assault weapons, which covered
66 weapons as adopted in 1993, has been increased by at least 100 more
that now will meet the expanded definition of the military-style
firearm, that the industry refers to as sporting rifles.

The sale of AR-15s since the tragedy at Newtown increased dramatically
due to the anticipated rule changes and the fear that assault weapons
currently owned would be confiscated.

Legal owners can keep them in their homes and their businesses and they
can use them at the shooting range, but they can't be transported with
magazines holding more than 10 rounds.

Under the changes, no one has to give up their assault weapons purchased
by April 3, but there are restrictions on where they can be used.

That means citizens who rushed out to continue to clear the shelves at
firearm dealers of any of the banned firearms on the morning of April 4,
before Gov. Dannel P. Malloy signed the bill at noon, are in possession
of a banned weapon which is subject to a class D felony with a
mandatory one-year minimum prison term.

The exemptions to the ban allow their sale and possession to the
Department of Corrections, the Department of Emergency Services and
Public Protection, police departments and state/national military or
naval forces for use in their official duties.

LARGE CAPACITY MAGAZINE BAN: Magazines holding more than 10 rounds
cannot be sold, purchased or imported into Connecticut as the state
joins New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Colorado, California, Hawaii and
Washington, D.C. in limiting their size and use.

To reach bipartisan agreement among the leaders, the law does not ban
possession of magazines larger than 10 rounds, but, similar to the
banned assault weapons, they can only be possessed in a owner's home or
place of business and at a shooting range. When they are transported to
and from a shooting range, they cannot be loaded with more than 10
bullets.

The exemptions are the same as those for the banned assault weapons.

UNIVERSAL BACKGROUND CHECKS: The sale of all firearms, including the
private sale or transfer of long guns (rifles and shotguns) requires the
buyer to pass a national criminal background check. Up to now, the
private sale of long guns was not regulated and 40 percent of firearms
sales across the country did not require a background check.

The seller of long guns, in addition to the background check, has to
document the transaction with the state Department of Emergency Services
and Public Protection which must authorize the sale; the gun cannot be
loaded when transferred.

AMMUNITION SALES: Sales of ammunition to anyone under the age of 18 are barred.

EFFECTIVE JULY 1, 2013

LONG GUN ELIGIBILITY CERTIFICATE : The minimum age for a long gun
eligibility certificate is 18, whereas the existing law sets a minimum
age of 21 for a handgun. The eligibility certificate provisions are
substantially the same as those for handgun eligibility certificates:
DESPP issues them ; the fee is $35 and the certificate is good for five
years; a background check is needed; applicants are ineligible after
felony convictions, certain misdemeanors or certain mental health
history.

MENTAL HEALTH AND ELIGIBILITY FOR GUN CREDENTIALS: Persons confined to a
psychiatric hospital by a probate court order within the preceding 60
months are ineligible for a gun permit or eligibility certificate. Under
current law, it is within 12 months of the order

AMMUNITION CERTIFICATE: Anyone 18 years of age and older can request an
ammunition certificate, which will require a national criminal history
check. The cost is $35 and it is in effect for five years. Applicants
are ineligible if guilty of any felony, certain misdeamonors or
involuntary psychiatric confinement. The certificate is not needed for
those holding a permit to carry a pistol, which covers about 200,000
individuals in Connecticut, a handgun eligibility certificate or a long
gun certificate.

RISK REDUCTION EARNED CREDITS AND PAROLE FOR VIOLENT OFFENDERS: The law
requires inmates convicted of violent crimes to continue to serve 85
percent of their sentences before being eligible for parole, regardless
of any credits they receive. As under current law, inmates convicted of
any crimes except the following can earn credits: murder, capital
felony, felony murder, arson murder, first-degree aggravated sexual
assault and home invasion.

BOARD OF FIREARM PERMIT EXAMINERS MEMBERSHIP: The law increases the
board membership from seven to nine, by adding one retired Superior
Court judge, appointed by the chief court administrator, and a
Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services nominee, appointed by
the governor. The law also allows the board to grant one continuance,
for good cause, to an official whose action on a gun permit or gun
eligibility certificate is being appealed.

APPROPRIATION: The law appropriates $1 million to DESPP to fund the statewide firearms trafficking force. (Can you say MRAP?)

EFFECTIVE OCT. 1, 2013

MENTAL HEALTH AND GUN PERMITS ELIGIBILITY: The bill makes ineligible any
person who voluntarily admitted himself or herself to a psychiatric
hospital, on or after Oct. 1, 2013. A person who has been so admitted
will not be able to receive a permit or eligibility certificate for 6
months thereafter, nor will they be eligible to possess any firearm for
those six months following their release from the hospital.

You are not ineligible if your admission is solely for drug or alcohol treatment.

The Department Mental Health and Addiction Services will be responsible
for maintaining information on voluntary admissions and make that
information available to the Department of Emergency Services and Public
Protection to carry out the new provisions on obtaining gun
credentials. DMHAS must start to maintain identifying information on
these individuals as of July 1, 2013.

ARMOR PIERCING AMMUNITION BANNED: The bill expands the definition of
what constitutes banned armor piercing bullets beyond .50 caliber, which
have already been banned.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE INVESTIGATIONS: The bill allows police to seize
ammunition, under the same circumstances as they can seize guns, when
investigating domestic violence crimes.

INCREASED CRIMINAL PENALTIES FOR GUN TRAFFICKING AND OTHER GUN-RELATED
OFFENSES: Sixteen specific firearm related crimes have increased felony
penalities and mandatory minimum sentences usually moving from one
felony category to at lease one higher punishment level.

SAFE STORAGE REQUIREMENTS: Owners must secure firearms if they know that
a resident on the premises is ineligible to possess firearms under
state or federal law or poses a risk of imminent personal injury to
himself, herself or others. The current ban applied to keeping the
firearms away from anyone who is under age 16. As under current law, a
gun owner is strictly liable for damages if an ineligible or at-risk
person gains access to an inappropriately stored weapon and uses it to
injure himself or someone else.

GUN PERMIT APPLICATION : The law requires those applying for a gun permit
to be a permanent resident of the town to which he or she applies, not
where they have a business. The usual process is two-part, with a local
official or police chief issuing a temporary state permit with other
aspects conducted by state police who issue the five-year state permit
if all requirements are met.

The new law prohibits anyone from applying for a temporary permit more than once in a 12-month period.

EFFECTIVE JAN. 1, 2014

DANGEROUS WEAPON OFFENDER REGISTRY: Individuals must register with the
Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection for a period of
five years after they have served their sentences for any of more than
40 weapons offenses or another felony that the court makes a finding
involved the use or threatened use of a deadly weapon.

They must keep their registration address current at all times and check
in once a year with local law enforcement. This is the first statewide
weapon offender registry and was requested by urban mayors and the
Police Chiefs Association. It will only be available to law enforcement.

REGISTER LARGE CAPACITY MAGAZINES : Anyone who lawfully possesses a
magazine with more than 10 rounds as of April 3, 2013, must register
them with the state by January 1, 2014. Orders of such magazines made
before April 3, 2013, but delivered after that, still are legal but must
be registered.

REGISTER BANNED ASSAULT WEAPONS : Anyone who legally owned a now-banned
assault weapon by April 3, 2013, must apply for a certificate of
possession by Jan. 1, 2014.

ADDITIONAL INFO

Michael Lawlor, Malloy's chief liaison on criminal matters, said the
Department of Emergency Service and Public Protection will need more
staff and the governor is committed to funding this . He said the
regulations and forms necessary for the new registration of assault
weapons and large-capacity magazines and other requirements should be in
place by August 1.

A permit to carry for handguns now takes several months and that is
expected to continue. Additional personnel for much of the eligibility
processing will not need to be state police.

While there was an increase in processing gun sales since the tragedy in
Newtown, the reduced number of weapons Connecticut residents are now
allowed to buy will ease that bureaucratic impact.

State Rep. Steve Dargan, D-West Haven, said his main concern is to make sure that the necessary funding is in place.

The estimated cost of improving mental health services and school
security, in addition to the firearms changes, is $18.5 million though
fiscal 2015, according to the Office of Fiscal Analysis. For the
tightened of gun restrictions and new permitting the high end estimate
through early 2015 is $6.395 million. (They said the Canadian gun registry would take about 2 million and be self funded after that... Over 2 billion later..)

The breakdown of costs to the Department of Emergency Services and
Public Protection is between $200,000 and $300,000 in fiscal 2013; $2. 2
million to $3.2 million in fiscal 2014; and $695,000 beginning in
fiscal 2015, related to safety and security audits, enhanced background
check and permitting requirements, and developing and maintaining a new
registry of persons convicted of committing a crime with a deadly
weapon.

The Newtown shootings were the impetus for new gun laws across the
country and a nationwide discussion, some of which resulted in tighter
rules in eight states. But 10 states passed more than a dozen laws that
made them weaker, according to the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, a
reflection of how the issue continues to be one of the most divisive in
the country.

President Barack Obama will be at the University of Hartford Monday to continue to lobby for stricter federal gun laws.

But reinstating an assault weapons ban or limiting magazines is not
expected to happen on the national level, and there continues to be
pushback to universal background checks, despite the renewed effort for
more gun regulations in light of Newtown

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (Associated Press) -Illinois lawmakers agreed to legalize the use of medical marijuana on Friday under a plan that's being billed as the strictest in the nation among states that have authorized the drug's medicinal use, though it was unclear whether the Democratic governor plans to sign it.

The plan authorizes a pilot program for physicians to prescribe marijuana only to patients with whom they have an existing relationship. by Browse to Save" id="_GPLITA_3" href="http://www.myfoxchicago.com/story/22283181/illinois-senate-approves-medical-marijuana-bill#" style="text-decoration: underline;">Background checks are required, and patients must have at least one of more than three dozen terminal illnesses or other debilitating medical conditions specifically listed in the bill.

Gov. Pat Quinn has declined to say whether he supports the legislation, saying only that he was "open-minded" on the issue. Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon, a former prosecutor, has said she is in favor of the plan after meeting with patients, including military veterans.

The proposed legislation creates a framework for a four-year pilot program that includes requiring patients and by Browse to Save" id="_GPLITA_1" href="http://www.myfoxchicago.com/story/22283181/illinois-senate-approves-medical-marijuana-bill#" style="text-decoration: underline;">caregivers to undergo background checks. It sets a 2.5 ounce limit per patient per purchase and calls for 60 dispensaries regulated by the state where patients could buy the drug.

"We are embarking here on a way to achieve relief, compassionate relief, consistent with the law (with) a system which avoids abuse," said the bill's sponsor, Democratic Sen. Bill Haine of Alton. "It's the tightest, most controlled legislative initiative in the United State related to medical cannabis."

Supporters say it is a compassionate measure that could save patients from the agony caused by illnesses such as cancer, by Browse to Save" id="_GPLITA_0" href="http://www.myfoxchicago.com/story/22283181/illinois-senate-approves-medical-marijuana-bill#" style="text-decoration: underline;">multiple sclerosis and HIV. They argue that marijuana can relieve continual pain without triggering the harmful effects of other prescription drugs, including painkillers such as Oxycontin and Vicodin.

But opponents contend the program could encourage the recreational use of marijuana, especially among teenagers.

A report issued last month by the Pew Research Center poll showed that 77 percent of Americans say marijuana has legitimate medical uses. Eighteen states and the District of Columbia allow the use of marijuana for medical purposes.

But critics in the Illinois Senate, which approved the plan Friday in a 35-21 vote, worried about whether the regulations would be enough to prevent abuse of the drug.

"For every touching story that we have heard about the benefits of those in pain, I remind you today that there are a thousand times more parents who will never be relieved from the pain of losing a child due to addiction, which in many cases has started with the very illegal, FDA-unapproved, addiction-forming drug you are asking us to make a normal part of our communities," Sen. Kyle McCarter, a Republican from Lebanon, said ahead of the chamber's vote.

Under the bill, patients who are prescribed the drug would automatically consent to submit to a sobriety field test should a police officer suspect they were by Browse to Save" id="_GPLITA_2" href="http://www.myfoxchicago.com/story/22283181/illinois-senate-approves-medical-marijuana-bill#" style="text-decoration: underline;">driving under the influence of the drug. But leading Illinois law enforcement organizations have opposed the legislation, saying the test cannot determine if a motorist is under the influence of marijuana. The groups say the test works only for alcohol.

Haine, however, said his measure is the strictest the General Assembly has considered on medical marijuana.

Haine and other supporters have advocated for the issue for several years. A measure that cleared the Senate failed in the House in 2011. The current version of the bill received the House's approval in April.

The bill is HB1 .

More of the Things You Aren't Supposed To Know

By Gordon Duff, Senior Editor

It is time we differentiated hard intelligence and rational
analysis from conspiracy theory addiction. Remember, it was Fox News
and the Limbaugh crowd that created the addiction for wild conspiracies
and fabrication.
They, of course, did so out of knowing treason, as time has proven
out rather conclusively. Let's look at what we know, what we can prove
and, especially, what can never be published.
A reader coined our media here in the west, the "LSN" (Lame Stream
News). That one may stick. The shame is even Colbert, Maher and
Stewart are shamefully dim witted and gutless.
They make me sick.

BUGGING THE PRESS, OR AT LEAST THE "ASSOCIATED PRESS"

The AP or "Associated Press" is hardly real press. Why shouldn't
the government bug the press? We pay the government to protect us from
dangerous criminals. In recent years, those who aren't wearing uniforms
or badges, carry press passes often as not.
First of all, at VT, we have certainly been bugged all along by a
dozen governments. We get followed and a few claim that helicopters are
over their homes continually. I am not so sure about that but we have
endless evidence of continual infiltration attempts by paid informants
and petty "terrorist groupies," all pretending to be activists of
members of the "alternative press."
We have had several of our editors and correspondents imprisoned,
including a UN Ambassador and member of congress and one who served as
White House intelligence chief.
Their crimes? One tried to tell Bush his Iraqi WMDs didn't exist.
The other refused to assign a huge amount of money belonging to the
people of the United States to the Bush family. That got him a 22 year
sentence. These moves "on the press" were done by two "Bush league"
presidents.
Another VT correspondent in Britain is under indictment for, and you
will love this, reporting a terrorist threat to an intelligence agency
that may well have been fully complicit in planning what was to be an
act of false flag terrorism. "Let no good deed go unpunished."
The lesson, if you are going to report terrorists, please ask them if they are working for the Mossad, CIA or MI-6 beforehand.

If they say no, they are with the Department of Homeland Security, America's answer to Al Qaeda.

Bush and Cheney ordered the assassination of another of our editors,
Gwyneth Todd, a member of the National Security Council. "Gw" escaped
to Turkey and then to Australia. The attempt on her life was featured
in a five page Washington Post article and is mentioned, with some
regularity, on television in Australia. Todd, while at the White House,
was privy to some of America's darkest secrets, not just the illegal
invasions but broad spying by AIPAC and even planning of the 9/11 attack
as well.
Three VT contributors have been killed while reporting in zones of conflict.

One was kidnapped and tortured by Israelis, an issue now before the International Criminal Court at The Hague.

Another, an Israeli citizen of Jewish ethnicity, is under "sentence
of death for honesty in journalism," a common form of recognition in
Israel.
As for the AP and "others," we are fully behind government efforts to
investigate them. We have found the "Lame Stream News" isn't quite so
innocent. Minimally, anyone who hasn't been living under a rock knows
the news delivered to the undiscerning American, Brit, German, Canadian
or what have you is pure propaganda.
What few realize is that the acts of domestic terrorism know openly
accepted as "false flag attacks," certainly Sandy Hook and Boston, and
9/11 most of all, would be impossible without full complicity by the
press.
If the government wants to stop domestic terrorism, they are going to
have to wiretap the LSN, catching the text messages, emails and phone
calls from the spy organizations and terrorist groups that we believe
are regularly in contact with the press.
Key press assets are notified in advance of attacks so that stories
can quickly be "spun" to blame the "favor of the month" patsy and to
cover up blunders. On 9/11, when Building 7 collapsed though undamaged,
the BBC had predicted that collapse 20 minutes in advance by mistakenly
getting the timing of the demolition schedule wrong.
They had been notified in advance.

To any idiot, this has to be obvious: The BBC was working directly with the terrorists.

No other explanation is possible. If you can think of one, let me know.

It is impossible to defend the United States from terrorism and
espionage without running surveillance on terrorist groups and foreign
spies.
America's press qualifies on both counts.

There is more than conclusive evidence that the press takes direction
from AIPAC/ADL, long under investigation/indictment for espionage.
Eighty five percent of America's press is controlled by corporations
involved in war profiteering. 95% of the individuals who manage our
news are either Israeli citizens or qualify for Israeli citizenship.
This is not to say that all are controlled but as the truth never
gets out and wrongdoers are openly assisted and covered for by the
press, perhaps its time we took a look at them.
TEA PARTY IRS TROUBLES

Let's face it, the Tea Party is funded by money laundered into the
country through "Citizens united." The funding that put Tea Party
candidates in office was money from international criminal cartels,
drugs, prostitution, human trafficking, human organ theft and their cut
of the massive financial crimes that their policies defend while they
sit on their fat behinds in congress.
As for domestic contributions, most come from Sheldon Adelson, the
gambling boss, likeable old character though he is, and the ultra-evil
Koch brothers, some of the biggest market scamsters in the world.
It doesn't take a genius to note that the Tea Party serves and agenda
that demonstrates ties to organized crime, terrorist organizations and
that it is broadly aligned with financial wrongdoing.
This is exactly the kind of group I want the IRS investigating.

They are only being rational: "Where there's smoke, there's fire."

NUTTY CONSPIRACY FREAKS

Let's face it, the LSM or LSP, (Lame Stream Media or Lame Stream
Press, pick one), is not worth defending. They are enemies of the
United States, work directly with the groups that have destroyed much of
the world and, were I to have my way, I would put many in prison or
worse.
There is no major news agency that isn't openly complicit in acts of treason.

As for the Tea Party, the Wall Street dominated attempt to derail any
legitimate attempt to restore democracy in America, who cares if the
IRS goes after them. They are drowning in dirty money and should well
be paying taxes or doing jail time for tax evasion.
What I would like to know is this, why does anyone care when our
government finally starts going after the people all of us really hate?
It makes me happy.
You say going after them is "fascism?" Where did you read this, the Lame Stream Press?

Anyone wonder why my next words are "Too Stupid to Live."

SYRIAN NUKE

On or about May 4, 2013, we have conclusive evidence that a nuclear
weapon was used against Syria. Sources tell us that it was one of two
nuclear "bunker buster" weapons illegally transferred to Israel, stolen
by agents of the Department of Homeland Security. (If only I were
kidding...)
The last statement, however, is NOT confirmed, not the use of the
these particular weapons nor that Israel was responsible for the
attack. However, the nuclear attack was concurrent with an Israeli
artillery barrage against Syrian forces.
The confirmed nuclear attack, a weapon that could have been easily
delivered by a number of platforms, was against an underground
facility. Syria has gone to considerable lengths to deny an attack that
was filmed and that there is medical confirmation of as well.
We then ask, what was the facility and why the silence?

STRANGE BRITAIN

On January 18, 2013, a double-lorry stopped outside a pub in
Somerset. The name on the side said Insight Trans Logistics. The pub
is a known "watering hole" for a major arms trafficker known to trade in
nuclear technology and worse.
The cargo was identified as containers for two nuclear weapons.

The cargo was to be loaded for shipment to Gibraltar. When this
incident was reported to the security services, the individual
reporting, someone with decades of experience handling nuclear weapons,
was told to remain silent.
I leave the "dots" unconnected.

SYRIAN VOTE IN THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY

However the conflict in Syria began, the situation there has deteriorated into something "unholy."

I have deep respect for legitimate opposition forces that wish for a
change in the Syrian government. Toward that end, I have worked with
others to organize a strong delegation to Damascus to begin a peaceful
reconciliation, one that is "reality based" and is respectful of the
survival of all the Syrian people.
Others want Syria to go the way of Iraq or worse. Syria is to be a
platform for isolating and crushing Lebanon, for destabilizing Iraq
under the guise of Kurdish nationalism (a people I care deeply for) and
imposing a region-wide tyranny, financed by reactionary Arab royalty and
managed by Zionist fanatics.
World war will be the result.

The vote in the UN General Assembly, pushed by Qatar and the Saudi's,
a vote even Israel refused to take part in, was a shameful attempt to
push forward a sick agenda by the same nations that sent tanks into
Bahrain to suppress freedom loving people fighting against a vicious and
tyrannical state.
No rational person could look on the goals of an Israeli-Saudi
coalition and not be more than a bit dismayed to find two supposed
enemies have been working together for decades. Imagine the mischief
the LSM has had to cover up for this "axis of evil."
Anyone that thinks Russia and China will watch Syria be taken down,
them and then Iran, must know something the rest of us don't.
NIGERIA

In 2011 I was in Nigeria for the inauguration of Goodluck Jonathan.
While there, Harry Erivona and I and our associates met with the
president and the Chief of Security, top police and counter-terrorism
officials and leaders in banking and the national oil companies.
We had been invited to lay out plans for modernizing Nigeria, uniting
the country and preventing the civil war now ravaging the nation.
Our concerns weren't just for Nigeria or making money, the real
reason Nigeria has been targeted. Oh, you might ask who has targeted
Nigeria?
Civil war in Nigeria is big business, a civil war planned and
executed with full complicity by many of those now in Abuja working to
supposedly help protect Nigeria from, well, from those Nigeria is paying
endless millions to for "counter-terrorism" assistance.
Key officials in Nigeria were informed, very specifically, of the
timeline for terrorist bombings, training and supplying Boko Harum and
flooding the region with jihadists.
We had been in Nigeria before, same message, 2008.

Nigeria is a great country, the real key to African security and,
with that, very much the real security of the United States. We watched
intelligence agencies from Europe and "elsewhere" flood into Niger
under the guise of dealing with the conflict in Mali. While there, they
were pouring weapons into Nigeria and supporting terror cells
throughout the country.
Then, of course, the same groups were also sitting in hotels in
Abuja, with suitcases of cash to bribe officials, ready to take fat
contracts to fight the terrorists they had sent.
I do so love it when a plan comes together.

Southern Sudan, Uganda and Kenya are next on the list.

The hotels are filling up with "doctors" who bring the disease with them.

Children as young as four are becoming so addicted to smartphones and iPads that they require psychological treatment.

Experts have warned that parents who allow babies and toddlers to access tablet computers for several hours a day are in danger of causing "dangerous" long term effects.

The youngest known patient being treated in the UK is a four-year-old girl from the South East.
Her parents enrolled her for compulsive behaviour therapy after she became increasingly "distressed and inconsolable" when the iPad was taken away from her.

Her use of the device had escalated over the course of a year and she had become addicted to using it up for to four hours a day.
Dr Richard Graham, who launched the UK's first technology addiction programme three years ago, said he believed there were many more addicts of her age.

Dr Graham said that young technology addicts experienced the same withdrawal symptoms as alcoholics or heroin addicts, when the devices were taken away.
He warned that the condition prevented young people from forming normal social relationships, leaving them drained by the constant interaction.

Parents who have found themselves unable to wean their children off computer games and mobile phones are paying up to lb16,000 for a 28-day "digital detox" programme designed by Dr Graham at the Capio Nightingale clinic in London.

Fossil Fuel Subsidies in the U.S.

For all of those who deny we subsidize fossil fuel from this post:

http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=fed_1367612585

What is a fossil fuel subsidy?

A fossil fuel subsidy is any government action that lowers the
cost of fossil fuel energy production, raises the price received by
energy producers or lowers the price paid by energy consumers. There are
a lot of activities under this simple definition-tax breaks and
giveaways, but also loans at favorable rates, price controls, purchase
requirements and a whole lot of other things .
Are you looking for information about International Fossil Fuel Subsidies? Then go here.

Want to take action to end fossil fuel subsidies? Sign this petition.

How much money does the U.S. government give oil, gas and coal companies?

In the United States, credible estimates of annual fossil fuel
subsidies range from $10 billion to $52 billion annually, while even
efforts to remove small portions of those subsidies have been defeated
in Congress, as shown in the graphic below. Download your own pdf copy here.

$2.4 Billion: subsidies to the Big Five producers debated and defeated in the Senate in 2011 and 2012

The Repeal Big Oil Tax Subsidies Act, sponsored by Senator Menendez (D-NJ) was debated and defeated by the Senate for two years running ,
and would have eliminated $2.4 billion in annual tax deductions for the
five major oil companies: BP, Exxon, Chevron, Shell and ConocoPhillips.
Although the move would have been an initial step, it's just the tip
of the iceberg. So called "independent" oil companies are hardly small
businesses. Major integrated oil companies also include Occidental,
Amerada Hess, Marathon, Murphy Oil and dozens of others. Together, these
companies produced 53.5 percent of U.S. oil in 2009 .
$4 Billion: Subsidy cuts President Obama proposed in the 2013 budget.

President Obama has proposed cutting fossil fuel subsidies every year
he's been in office. The projections for savings have varied slightly
each year but always hover around $4 billion annually. Congress has
never even proposed voting on all of them.
$10 billion. Low end credible comprehensive estimates. Several
recent independent estimates of U.S. fossil fuel subsidies all arrive
at roughly this number, although they consider slightly different
things. Recent studies include those conducted by Management Information Services , Environmental Law Institute , and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development - OECD. (The OECD numbers compiled and analyzed here .)
The Sanders / Ellison "End Polluter Welfare Act" also clocks in at $11.3 billion annually.

$52 billion. Highest credible comprehensive estimate.
Includes some costs associated with defending pipelines and shipping
lanes in the Persian Gulf. Earth Track , an NGO that specializes in subsidy valuation, estimates that annual oil, gas and coal subsidies total about $52 billion annually .
As if that wasn't enough, the reality is that the fossil fuel industry has profound impacts in much bigger ways.

Health . A 2009 report
by the National Academy of Sciences claims that burning fossil fuels
results in about $120 billion per year in health-related costs.
Infrastructure spending . The US is already committed
to spending at least $1.6 trillion additional dollars per year in
maintenance, new vehicles and fuel. We built our power transmission
lines on the assumption of large, remote power plants. We build our
houses and industries on the assumption of cheap electricity; those
practices, codes and regulations are still embedded in our construction
and manufacturing sectors. We built our power transmission lines on the assumption of large, remote power plants.
Costs from climate change . The
costs of accelerating climate change are staggering, and are certainly
greater than the costs of ending our dependence on fossil fuels.
Whatever the numbers, it seems ludicrous that any of our tax
dollars would support such established and profitable industries. These
energy subsidies are completely out of step with a nation that now
broadly accepts the need to end our collective oil addiction and fight
global warming.
What are the benefits from removing fossil fuel subsidies?

One of the most obvious benefits of ending fossil fuel subsidies is
increasing the availability of public money. Additionally, ending
excessive and wasteful support for fossil fuels would reduce greenhouse
gas emissions that lead to global warming.
The money saved from fossil fuel subsidies could be used to promote
clean energy and energy efficiency alternatives, which would be in line
with public opinion. A 2010 poll by Stanford University
found public support for government action to increase clean energy and
energy efficiency. The poll found that 84 percent are in favor of
giving companies tax breaks to produce more electricity from water,
wind, and solar power; 81 percent want more fuel efficient cars that use
less gasoline; 80 percent want more appliances that use less
electricity; and 80 percent want more home and office buildings that
require less energy to heat and cool.
What is the U.S. government doing to end fossil fuel subsidies?

For the last several years, President Obama has proposed eliminating $4
billion in oil and gas subsidies from the U.S. budget. While these are not all the subsidies that this mature and very profitable industry enjoys , they are some of the most obvious. But Congress hasn't yet approved President Obama's budget cuts.Fossil fuel subsidies have come up in Congress - and rightly so! - in
discussions of ways to cut government expenditures in order to balance
the budget. In the spring of 2011, there was a push by some legislators
to remove subsidies that target only the major oil companies - in
particular, the "Big Five" (BP, Exxon, Chevron, Shell, ConocoPhillips).
While this would end some of the oil subsidies, it would unfortunately exclude a number of huge companies
such as Valero, Koch Industries, Occidental, Anadarko, Amerada Hess,
Marathon, Murphy Oil and a number of more diversified energy companies
that also produce large quantities of the nation's oil and gas.
In the fall of 2011, there was some hope that fossil fuel subsidy
reduction could be included in the Super Committee's proposal to
Congress for $1.5 trillion in deficit-reduction measures over the next
ten years. There was support in Congress for this: In an October letter
to the Super Committee, 36 House Democrats urged the committee to end subsidies to the fossil fuel industry that would save up to $122 billion over the next ten years.
But in the end, it proved to be an uphill battle to get the Super
Committee to take a stand on fossil fuel subsidies - and perhaps that's
not so surprising, given the influence of fossil fuel industry money on
the Super Committee. Eight Super Committee members received over
$300,000 in contributions from the fossil fuel industry since 1999:
Senators Baucus (D-MT) , Kyl (R-AZ) , Portman (R-OH) , and Toomey (R-PA) , and Representatives Camp (R-MI) , Clyburn (D-SC) , Hensarling (R-TX) , and Upton (R-MI) .
Is there any reason to be concerned about removing fossil fuel subsidies?

Calls for subsidy removal tend to be answered by the oil industry and
their allies with dire predictions of falling domestic production, loss
of jobs, and rising gas prices. But the reality is that removing fossil
fuel subsidies (which the industry deceptively calls new taxes) will
have little to no impact on domestic production, jobs, or prices at the
pump.
According to the Treasury Department ,
removing the domestic subsidies as proposed in the President's budget
would reduce U.S. oil production less than one half of one percent, and
will increase exploration and production costs less than two
percent. Considering the price that the domestic industry receives for
crude has more than doubled over the past several years, the industry
can afford that - without laying anyone off or jacking up the price at
the pump.
The global oil market, not the domestic industry, determines gas
prices. Treasury estimates that subsidy removal would cause a loss of
less than one tenth of one percent in global oil supply, and thus would
have no impact on global or U.S. prices.
The only way to end our reliance on foreign oil is to end our dependence on all oil.

How come there's such a big range in estimates of fossil fuel subsidies?

First, accounting methods and exact definitions of subsidies vary.
Second, while environmental and consumer groups tend to calculate the
total amount of revenue to the American taxpayer that these subsidies
cost, others note that "many subsidies have a higher value to recipients
than their direct cost to the government." In other words, the higher
values are more indicative of the corporate welfare given to the already
highly profitable oil industry annually, while the more conservative
figures are a better estimate of how much the elimination of these
subsidies would save the U.S. taxpayer.
Finally, some of the highest estimates include a portion of defense spending (more info on defense subsidies to oil here and here ).
It should be noted that while the estimate of $53 billion in fossil
fuel subsidies annually does include some of the cost of U.S. military
"defense" of the Persian Gulf region, it does not specifically
incorporate any increase in defense spending relating to Iraq ,
or any quantification of the environmental externalities associated
with oil. And none of the amounts cited include fossil fuel subsidies in
the form of international aid, which is explained in greater detail on this page .While the estimates of how much subsidies are worth varies, estimates
of the relative levels of funding of energy types are consistent. The chart from Environmental Law Institute on the right illustrates that the vast majority of subsidies still go to fossil fuels.
What can I do to help end fossil fuel subsidies in the United States?

So how do we transform oil companies into energy companies and jumpstart the new energy economy? The first step is a Separation of Oil & State
- including an end to governmental subsidies to Big Oil and an
investment in renewable energy alternatives and energy efficiency
instead.

Lebanon's new gerneration of Sunni Child Soldiers

Jamal's father sips tea at a desk inside a makeshift bunker in Tripoli, Lebanon's notoriously violent Bab el-Tebbeneh neighborhood. Sandbags are piled up against the windows, and bullet holes riddle the walls of surrounding buildings. The bunker is located on the most dangerous street in the area-the border between the Sunni and Alawite sides of town, and a front line of almost-weekly gunfights between their respective residents.

The leader of a local Sunni militia, Jamal's dad is a large, bearlike man with a thick black beard. He's surrounded by fellow militiamen, a couple of whom look as young as 16 or 17. At nine years old, Jamal is by far the youngest person in the room. He's a sweet-faced boy with a shy smile, and at first, he's too bashful to say a word. But with a little prodding from his father, he starts to talk.

"I want to be a fighter like my dad when I grow up," he says proudly. "The Alawite snipers shoot our women and children, so we shoot them. We protect our neighborhood."

Child soldiers have long been a problem in Lebanon. During the civil war that ravaged the country for nearly 15 years, many kids were practically born with machine guns in their hands. Since the war died down, most Lebanese thought those days were over, but the conflict in Syria has caused the security situation in the country to deteriorate, especially in northern cities like Tripoli, and has prompted a new generation of kids to pick up guns. Poor and mostly Sunni, many of them are drawn to the growing Salafist militias that have spread throughout Lebanon over the past few years.

Jamal grabs a cell phone off the desk and opens it to play two videos. The first one is of him holding a PKS machine gun that looks to be at least three times his size. His dad watches him carry it to the corner of the block, where he helps him shoot off a few rounds at the Alawite houses across the street.

The other video shows Jamal scampering around after his dad and the other militiamen, all carrying weapons. Jamal is wearing a Palestinian kiffeyeh . The sound of gunfire echoes from close by.

Jamal returns the cell phone to his father. Asked if he likes school, he nods emphatically. His dad beams when asked if his son gets good grades.

"He's second in his class," he says with some pride. "Just like his dad. I liked going to class, too."
Fadi Abi Allam, president of the Permanent Peace Movement, an NGO that works with child soldiers, says that the breakdown in society during war contributes to the creation of child militants. He says that every sect in Lebanon is encouraging the arming of children to some extent. "Child soldiers exist all over the world, in countries where there is war, not against another state, but within the state," he says. "Whenever there are militias, there will be child soldiers. In the beginning, militias rely to a great extent on people who are ignorant enough to enter battle
without considering the consequences. It's easy to insert any type of ideology into a child, and they don't cost much money."

Fadi says that the poverty and mentality that come along with sustained conflict contribute greatly to this phenomenon. "From the children's side... they want independence," he says. "They want to be grown-ups, smoke cigarettes, drive cars. They want to carry a gun. Here in Lebanon, carrying a gun is considered heroic... also, some of the families here rely on their children to provide extra money. They're also usually supportive of their kids fighting against other sects. So they don't think what they're doing is wrong... they're actually pushing their children towards 'manhood.'"

At another apartment in Bab el-Tebbeneh, a man we'll call Hamid, a sheikh and leader of a different neighborhood militia, smiles at his own little boy, a two-year-old. Hamid's wife retreated to the kitchen at the sight of strangers in her house, but the little boy stayed, watching our exchange, big-eyed and silent.

Hamid denies that there are many young children who actually fight in these militias but says there are a fair amount of teenagers who do.

"We're talking more about young men who are 15 years old," he says. "Some of them come from poor families, and they don't have a purpose. But after they join us, they become more mature, and they follow Islam the right way. They become disciplined. In Bab el-Tebbeneh, a lot of
young men don't have the opportunity to work... so they fall into drugs and other criminal behavior. When they join us, they follow another path."

According to Hamid, the former Syrian occupation of Lebanon, as well as the current conflict in Syria, has affected all the children in his neighborhood, inspiring them to join in the drawn-out fight against the Alawites just a few yards away.

"Almost every household in this neighborhood has lost a martyr in the fight against the Syrian regime and the Alawites in Jabal Mohsen," he says. "So the children grow up with this hate towards them. Every chance they get, they're going to try and get revenge."

But according to Daad Ibrahim, a psychologist who works with child soldiers, the psychological price these kids pay for their revenge is high.

"After the fighting, for many of them, the guilt sets in and they start to think about what they did and blame themselves," she says. "There are cases of suicide, drug addiction, and mental illness."

Ibrahim maintains that religious pressure plays an important role in the militarization of children.

"Religion is another reason child soldiers exist," she says. "The children think doing this will make God happy, because that's what they're told."

At the bunker, Jamal is asked if he ever gets scared when there's fighting. He shakes his head.

	"No. Never."

	His dad laughs.

"He'll grow up to be stronger than me, stronger than all of us," he says with a proud smile.

War On Drugs Summed Up In One Image

The controversial war on drugs not only costs a lot, it has done almost
nothing to curb the drug addiction rate since 1970, according to this
stunning chart by documentary filmmaker Matt Groff comparing the cost of drug control to the drug addiction rate. Groff used the rate of addiction to illicit drugs from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services , pairing it with federal drug control budget spending numbers from the International Centre for Science in Drug Policy .

Groff, who made the chart for his new documentary on the drug war The 1315 Project ,
says that it shows the costly war on drugs simply isn't working. A
note: The numbers on this chart alone don't add up to $1.5 trillion,
which represents a more inclusive count of drug control spending, with
prison costs and state level costs determined by the Office of National Drug Control Policy ,
but instead to $800 billion. Groff included that $1.5 trillion because
the chart appears in the documentary as a source discusses that more
complete amount.

As you can see, while the blue illicit drug addiction rate line has
remained relatively steady at about 1.3 percent, the green line for drug
control spending has skyrocketed. The increased spending did not
correlate to lower addiction rates. "Drug use and abuse exists on a
spectrum and as a society we must accept that some portion of the
population will be addicted to drugs even if we don't like it," Groff
says.
