A recent study indicates that most people would strongly object to witnessing someone they knew littering, especially if carried out on a regular basis. I'd tend to agree, I cant abide it. The study then goes on to suggest that in contrast to this socially accepted norm, most people would not object to a friend, colleague, or family member driving a motor vehicle while intoxicated. Not incapacitated, intoxicated. They go on to suggest that there are 3 schools of thought when it comes to drink driving. 1. Drink driving is generally socially acceptable; meaning we see people do it and don't report it, and unlike littering we don't challenge this behaviour, there or therafter, nor it would seem, do we begin to change the way will feel about the person doing it, unless they are stupifyed: legless. A stark contrast to littering. 2. Get caught drinking and driving and get a conviction and this changes. Individuals with convictions generally report stigma and feel a sense of shame when divulging their DUI. Some report to lie about the reason for not driving. 3. If you are unlucky enough to kill someone in a DUI, especially if that person is a child, Everyone tends to hates you, even drink drivers. Why? What seperates a drink driver that the kills from those that don't? Luck?
