I am reeeealllly ashamed of myself due to the fact that I did not stop in the middle of the yard to film the tornado that hit just after this photo was taken. I had just got back on site, didn't have radio contact and couldn't get my personal communications device to get a signal when this cell moved in. I had crews in three locations at the plant and needed to make sure that they had taken shelter when the twister hit and here I was in the middle of the yard hoping that my golf cart wasn't going to turn into an ultra-lite. The funnel hit about three transformers in quick succession, each one arcing out and lighting the wall of rain from behind and giving a perfect silhouette of the funnel cloud and all I could do was look at the d@mned thing like Forest Gump and wonder if I was going to walk away from it.

I honestly thought about trying to capture it on camera but, I felt that I needed to make my wife wait a little longer on the policy payout...

heavy icing on the live wire causes severe arcing from the overhead 25 kV AC. Running along the top of the pantograph is a thick strip of graphite and or other metallised strips about three quarters of an inch thick. During these arcing phases holes are often burned through them and they have to be replaced.

An untitled poem written on a random whim

Even though this is a non-political piece, I figured I'd post this to my profile here for those who enjoy this kind of thing to check out. I wrote it last night at an awards ceremony, and it is a little rough as of yet.

Cold stare, lost in there -

in that deep dark void of space

behind familiar eyes. Looking

into them, in search of some faint

shine or glimmer - The dim spark

of deeply veiled nebulae, of arcing

ideas and the birth of new stars;

of dreams and fears of the dying light

seen in the dulling eyes of others.

The dimming spark of the spirit's demise -

of necromancy on the rise - those warm eyes

drowning under darkened skies, where the dead

needn't ever die - and the truth would never unfold the lie.

Warm eyes, in disguise

beneath the unforgiving glare of summer

skies. Long-held love begins to falter

like the disillusioned priest up at the

altar. Just as the fondest moments

begin to fade, cynicism and bias come

to save the day. As the support beams

begin to go, we beg the rot to eventually slow;

but time is short, so 'Seize the day!'

for every bad day spent is one left that way.

Every silent, cold night in bed together

but alone is there to stay, and will remain when

we are nothing but voices, distant on the phone.

Raw video: Arcing Powerlines Cause Tree Fire & Explosion

BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- Arcing wires are being blamed for a spectacular explosion that took place in this Northern Washington city over the weekend.

Trouble began when a 60-foot poplar tree swaying into high voltage power lines Saturday afternoon. The tree branches danced closer and closer to the lines, eventually catching on fire.

Kaleb Skurdal was driving by when he saw the flames. He stopped his car, and started filming with his cell phone.

Raw video of the tree fire

"Like for five minutes I'm just like standing here," he said.

Skurdal and several others called the fire department.

But after 10 minutes, fire trucks had yet to arrive at the scene. Meantime, the electricity began pulsating, and the flames were intensifying, Skurdal said.

"Like every time it would hit, it would be like, 'Dzzzzz,' and basically sounded like a light sabre -- the light sabre sound in Star Wars.'"

Then it happened. A huge arc sent a bolt of fire like lightning down the tree, and everyone around felt the jolt.

"It basically felt like a bomb going off," said Skurdal. "I was like, 'This is what its like to live in Israel.'"

Fortunately nobody was hurt and everyone in the house below the tree were able to get out safely.

The arc caused a power surge, damaging many computers and circuit breakers in the neighborhood. Some 4,500 people were left without power.

"The computer fried, a fax machine fried, things like that," said Chris McCoy, computer technician for 3D Corp.

The Bellingham Fire Department says it got a call of arcing wires and passed that information on to Puget Sound Energy.

Asst. Fire Chief Roger Christensen said the department doesn't typically respond to call of arcing wires unless flames are also reported. In this case, the spokesman said, nobody did.
