Once CNN's Jake Tapper actually did obtain a real email , and the White House subsequently released the actual email chain , Karl's "emails" were revealed to be summaries, provided by a source, which contained invented quotes and significant omissions . On Thursday night's CBS Evening News , Chief White House Correspondent Major Garrett reported that a Republican source was behind the invented quotes, which were also leaked to CBS News' Sharyl Attkisson , a fact that Karl did not disclose in his original report, or his followup, and which Attkisson did not disclose, either. Anchor Scott Pelley began by noting that, at a joint press conference with Prime Minister Erdogan of Turkey, President Obama "called for tighter security for U.S. diplomatic facilities to prevent an attack like the one in Benghazi, Libya, last year that killed U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans." Pelley added, "Of course, Benghazi has become a political controversy. Republicans claim that the Administration watered down the facts in talking points that were given to U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice for television appearances while Mr. Obama was running for reelection. Republicans on Capitol Hill claim that they had found proof of this in White House e-mails that they leaked to reporters last week. Well, it turns out some of the quotes in those e-mails were wrong. CBS News Chief White House Correspondent Major Garrett then reported on the source of those invented quotes, and offered his analysis of their effect on the Republican narrative. "Scott, Republicans have claimed that the State Department under Hillary Clinton was trying to protect itself from criticism," Major began. "The White House released the real e-mails late yesterday and here's what we found when we compared them to the quotes that had been provided by Republicans. One e-mail was written by Deputy National Security Advisor Ben Rhodes. On Friday, Republicans leaked what they said was a quote from Rhodes. 'We must make sure that the talking points reflect all agency equities, including those of the State Department, and we don't want to undermine the FBI investigation.'" "But it turns out, in the actual e-mail Rhodes did not mention the State Department," he continued. "It read 'We need to resolve this in a way that respects all the relevant equities, particularly the investigation.' Republicans also provided what they said was a quote from an e-mail written by State Department Spokesman Victoria Nuland. The Republican version notes Nuland discussing 'the penultimate point is a paragraph talking about all the previous warnings provided by the Agency (CIA) about al-Qaeda's presence and activities of al-Qaeda.'" "The actual e-mail from Nuland says 'the penultimate point could be abused by Members to beat the State Department for not paying attention to Agency warnings,'" Major said, adding "The CIA agreed with the concerns raised by the State Department, and revised the talking points to make them less specific than the CIA's original version, eliminating references to al Qaeda and affiliates, and earlier security warnings." Garrett concluded, "There is no evidence, Scott, the White House orchestrated these changes." ABC News has, thus far, defended Karl's reporting as "consistent with" the actual emails, and has not addressed the attribution issue, except to say that ""Karl's report could have been even clearer" that the reporting was not based on the actual emails. Voters trust Hillary Clinton over Congressional Republicans on the issue of Benghazi by a 49/39 margin and Clinton's Voters think Congress should be more focused on other major issues right now rather than Benghazi. By a 56/38 margin they say passing a comprehensive immigration reform bill is more important than continuing to focus on Benghazi, and by a 52/43 spread they think passing a bill requiring background checks for all gun sales should be a higher priority. While voters overall may think Congress' focus should be elsewhere there's no doubt about how mad Republicans are about Benghazi. 41% say they consider this to be the biggest political scandal in American history to only 43% who disagree with that sentiment. Only 10% of Democrats and 20% of independents share that feeling. Republicans think by a 74/19 margin than Benghazi is a worse political scandal than Watergate, by a 74/12 margin that it's worse than Teapot Dome, and by a 70/20 margin that it's worse than Iran Contra. One interesting thing about the voters who think Benghazi is the biggest political scandal in American history is that 39% of them don't actually know where it is. 10% think it's in Egypt, 9% in Iran, 6% in Cuba, 5% in Syria, 4% in Iraq, and 1% each in North Korea and Liberia with 4% not willing to venture a guess. The chorus of "move along, there's nothing to see here" admonitions from Democrats and liberal journalists lacked credibility. As Peter Wehner said this morning , White House spokesman Jay Carney's disgraceful "no regrets" performance Friday afternoon showed just how desperate the administration has become. But its determination to keep stonewalling and denying was rooted in a not unreasonable conviction: So long as the Democrats and liberal journalists close ranks behind the president, and more importantly, the reputation of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Benghazi will be viewed as a partisan club used by Republicans rather than a genuine scandal. But while most in the chattering classes are sticking to the new talking points, a prominent exception today marks a significant crack in that heretofore-solid wall of liberal opinion. Conservatives rightly disdain Maureen Dowd as the New York Times's queen of snark, a writer whose work has long become the byword for pointless nastiness and deeply unserious takes on the news of the day that gives a bad name to political hatchet work. Yet, harking back to her salad days in the 1990s when she earned a reputation as the rare liberal who was willing to challenge Bill Clinton's cult of personality, Dowd has today written what may be the first sign that Hillary is not going to be able to escape accountability for 9/11/12 and the cover-up that followed that tragedy. In discussing the revelations of the last week, Dowd must, of course, try to depict Republican attempts to bring accountability to the scandal as equally reprehensible as the administration's failures and lies. But her framing the current debate as a contest between "Hillaryland" and "Foxworld" has at least the virtue of acknowledging the fact that what we are discussing is a disgraceful dereliction of duty by the administration: The toxic theatrics, including Karl Rove's first attack ad against Hillary, cloud a simple truth: The administration's behavior before and during the attack in Benghazi, in which four Americans died, was unworthy of the greatest power on earth. This is important not because Dowd's any kind of a moral authority but because as one of the resident op-ed gods of the New York Times, her breaking of the liberal code of omerta on the subject of administration misconduct on Benghazi signals that what is unfolding is a genuine scandal with unforeseen repercussions, and not a Republican temper tantrum. In the midst of a re-election campaign, Obama aides wanted to promote the mythology that the president who killed Osama was vanquishing terror. So they deemed it problematic to mention any possible Qaeda involvement in the Benghazi attack. ... Looking ahead to 2016, Hillaryland needed to shore up the mythology that Clinton was a stellar secretary of state. Dowd goes straight to the heart of the matter when she rightly notes that the lives of Americans were sacrificed for the sake of trying to make Libya appear as if it were a triumph of the Obama administration's foreign policy. Just as important, the subsequent cover-up was clearly intended to protect Mrs. Clinton's reputation. The lies that were told about the attack being caused by a video and the effort to quash mention of al-Qaeda and terrorism were clearly intended to bolster the president's re-election efforts as well as avoid damaging a future Democratic candidate. There are three issues here that still remain unresolved. How is it that decision makers failed to understand the danger? How is it that forces were not made available to save four Americans when they were placed in peril? Why did the administration fail to tell the truth about all of this? Those questions will require the formation of a select congressional committee with subpoena power to get to the answers the American people need. Democratic counter-attacks trying to portray the effort to get those answers as mere partisan squabbling are failing. The premise of Hillary Clinton's rhetorical question, "What difference does it make?" was the belief that the media would protect her and ensure that Americans wouldn't care. A key Benghazi whistle-blower who has allegedly been punished for speaking out against the administration is a registered Democrat who voted for both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. The lawyer of Gregory Hicks, the former U.S. deputy chief of mission in Libya who testified before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Wednesday, confirmed the information to The Daily Caller on Saturday. According to the lawyer, Victoria Toensing, Hicks voted for Clinton during the 2008 primary, and for then-Illinois Sen. Obama in the 2008 general election. He again voted for Obama in 2012. "The fact is he is a registered Democrat in Virginia. The fact is he voted for Hilary in the primary and Obama and then again for Obama," Toensing said. Toensing added that she did not know he was a Democrat until the day before the hearing. "I'm not interested in that," she said. "I'm interested in government not abusing its powers." Hicks testified before the House Oversight Committee this week regarding the events that took place on Sept. 11, 2012 in Benghazi and recalled how the State Department told him not to cooperate with the congressional investigation into the events, which led to the deaths of four Americans. Hicks further testified that he has been demoted since Benghazi. "The job now is a significant ... it's a demotion," Hicks said before the committee. "Foreign-affairs officer is a designation that is given to our civil service colleagues who are desk officers. So I've been effectively demoted from deputy chief of mission to desk officer." The State Department has denied the demotion, saying that Hicks decided to end his assignment in Libya early. "The Department has not and will not retaliate against Mr. Hicks," Acting Deputy State Department spokesperson Patrick Ventrell said during a Thursday press briefing. "As he testified yesterday, he decided to shorten his assignment in Libya following the attacks, in part due to understandable family reasons, and that he has followed standard employment processes." According to Toensing, however, the administration is simply lying. "The State Department is lying - saying he was not demoted. It is almost impossible under law for them to take away anybody's salary. But they demoted him to a job where he has no meaningful work," she said. "He had a choice between no job whatsoever and a job that didn't have any meaningful work. And I say this is like telling a starving man he can have no food or he can have the rotten beef. And if he chooses the rotten beef, is that a choice?"
