Navy dolphin finds 130-year-old torpedo

A Navy dolphin training to look for mines off the coast of San Diego found a museum-worthy 19th-century torpedo on the seafloor, military officials said.

The brass-coated, retro wonder of technology was one of the first self-propelled torpedoes used by the U.S. Navy. Just 50 of these so-called Howell torpedoes were made and only one other example has been recovered; it sits in the Naval Undersea Museum in Keyport, Wash., outside of Seattle.

'Realizing that we were the first people to touch it or be around it in over 125 years was really exciting.'- Christian Harris, operations supervisor for the SSC Pacific Biosciences Division

The 130-year-old, 11-foot-long weapon was discovered back in March during a mine-hunting exercise that the Space and Naval warfare Systems Center Pacific (SSC Pacific) was conducting with bottlenose dolphins.

"Dolphins naturally possess the most sophisticated sonar known to man. They can detect mines and other potentially dangerous objects on the ocean floor that are acoustically difficult targets to detect," operations supervisor Braden Duryee, of the SSC Pacific Biosciences Division, said in a statement.

Dolphins use their natural sonar, called echolocation, to determine the size and shape of underwater objects by sending out a series of clicks that bounce off their targets and boomerang back to them. The marine mammals can be trained to report what they have found to human handlers using certain yes or no responses. Handlers can then investigate what the dolphins find by sending the animals to mark an object's location with a weighted buoy line.

In this case, one of the dolphins indicated to its handler that it had detected a minelike target. The recovery dive team initially thought the dolphin had found an old tail section off an aerial drop mine, according to a statement from SSC Pacific, but officials soon realized they were handling a much rarer artifact.

"It was apparent in the first 15 minutes that this was something that was significant and really old," Christian Harris, operations supervisor for the SSC Pacific Biosciences Division, said in a statement. "Realizing that we were the first people to touch it or be around it in over 125 years was really exciting."

The Howell torpedo had a 132-lb flywheel that would be spun prior to launch. With a warhead filled with 100 lbs of gun cotton, the weapon had a range of 400 yards and could reach speeds of 25 knots, military officials said.

"It was the first torpedo that could be released into the ocean and follow a track," Harris said. "Considering that it was made before electricity was provided to U.S. households, it was pretty sophisticated for its time."

The torpedo is being kept in a tank of water to prevent erosion on its surface. The historical weapon will eventually be shipped to the Naval History and Heritage Command at the Washington Navy Yard.

Navy officials said last year that the U.S. military may begin retiring its dolphins in 2017 in favor of cheaper mine-hunting robots.

Dolphins' amazing sonar ability can be a blessing and a curse for marine mammal-military relations; the animals are acutely vulnerable to high-powered naval sonar used during military tests, and past naval exercises have been linked to dolphin strandings.

GMO Crop Sabotage on the Rise: French citizens destroy trial vineyard

GMO Crop Sabotage on the Rise: French citizens destroy trial vineyard

GMO grapevines destroyed (AFP)

By Rady Ananda
Food Freedom

Early Sunday morning, French police stood helpless as sixty people, locked inside an open-air field of genetically modified grapevines, uprooted all the plants. In Spain last month, dozens of people destroyed two GMO fields. On the millennial cusp, Indian farmers burned Bt cotton in their Cremate Monsanto campaign. Ignored by multinational corporations and corrupt public policy makers, citizens act to protect the food supply and the planet.

The French vineyard is the same field attacked last year when the plants were only cut. But the security features installed after that incident kept authorities at bay while the group accomplished its mission yesterday.

Speaking for the group, Olivier Florent told Le Figero that they condemned the use of public funds for open-field testing of GMOs "that we do not want."

Pitching tents in the rain near France's National Institute for Agronomic Research (INRA) site in Colmar the night before, the group waited until 5 AM before converging on the site and locking the gates behind them. They uprooted all 70 plants, then submitted to arrest.

This is the second attack on GMO crops to make international news this year. In July dozens of people destroyed two experimental corn crops in Spain. In an anonymous press release , they wrote, "This kind of direct action is the best way to respond to the fait accompli policy through which the Generalitat, the State and the biotech multinationals have been unilaterally imposing genetically modified organisms."

In the late 1990s, Indian farmers burnt Bt cotton fields in their Cremate Monsanto campaign. Monsanto did not disclose to farmers that the GM seeds were experimental. "Despite the heavy use of chemical fertiliser, traces of which still can be observed in the field, the Bt plants grew miserably, less than half the size of the traditional cotton plants in the adjacent fields."

After the Haiti earthquake this year, Monsanto offered 475 tons of hybrid corn and terminator vegetable seeds in partnership with USAID. In June, 10,000 Haitian farmers marched in protest of the "poison gift" which produces no viable seeds for future plantings and requires heavy chemical inputs. Haitian farm leader Chavannes Jean-Baptiste observed that the biotech plan makes farmers dependent on multinational corporations.

In the US, GMOs were secretly foisted on the public in the mid-1990s, and only now is the US Supreme Court addressing the scourge. In June, the high court upheld partial deregulation of GM alfalfa , which permits limited planting while the USDA prepares an Environmental Impact Statement. Natural and organic alfalfa supply is threatened by the very real potential of GM contamination. This would destroy the organic meat and dairy industry.

Last Friday, a federal court took a tougher position on GM sugar beets. Judge Jeffrey S. White revoked USDA approval of the GM beet , while allowing for its planting this year only.

Also this month, a British farmer exposed that milk and meat from cloned animals had secretly entered the food supply.

Public opposition to GM crops has grown in recent years as more evidence surfaces that DNA-altered crops:

Require massive chemical inputs which destroy local biodiversity and poison the water tables; Cross-pollinate with natural and weedy crops; Create superweeds ; and Have been shown to cause organ damage , sterility , and diabetes and obesity in mammals. Meanwhile, President Obama has stacked his Administration with biotech insiders going so far as to appoint Islam Siddiqui as Agriculture Trade Negotiator. Siddiqui is a former pesticide lobbyist and vice president of CropLife America, a biotech and pesticide trade group that lobbies to weaken environmental laws.

The US is pushing hard at the world to accept GM foods. Recently, the American Farm Bureau Federation called for stronger sanctions against the European Union for its GM crop ban.

But as governments and trade agreements circumvent the will of the people, some take matters into their own hands. The rise in GMO crop destruction is a clear indication that the world's people reject chemical and genetic pollution of the food supply and the environment.

(Bet all those "good ol' boys" are changing their tune after today)

Friday, Congress finally approved a $9.7 billion package
to pay flood insurance claims from Hurricane Sandy. The measure was
supposed to come to a vote earlier in the week, but was tabled by House
Speaker John Boehner, drawing much criticism from both Democrats and his fellow Republicans alike.
The measure
passed unanimously through the Senate, but 67 members of the House of
Representatives voted "no" to assisting people who were left, at best,
powerless or homeless by a hurricane in November. All 67 are
Republicans:
Justin Amash (R-MI) Andy Barr (R-KY) Dan Benishek (R-MI) Kerry Bentivolio (R-MI) Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) Jim Bridenstine (R-OK) Mo Brooks (R-AL) Paul Broun (R-GA) Steve Chabot (R-OH) Doug Collins (R-GA) Mike Conaway (R-TX) Tom Cotton (R-AR) Steve Daines (R-MT) Ron DeSantis (R-FL) Scott DesJarlais (R-TN) Sean Duffy (R-WI) Jeff Duncan (R-SC) Jimmy Duncan (R-TN) Stephen Fincher (R-TN) John Fleming (R-LA) Bill Flores (R-TX) Virginia Foxx (R-NC) Trent Franks (R-AZ) Louie Gohmert (R-TX) Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) Paul Gosar (R-AZ) Trey Gowdy (R-SC) Tom Graves (R-GA) Sam Graves (R-MO) Andrew Harris (R-MD) George Holding (R-NC) Richard Hudson (R-NC) Tim Huelskamp (R-KS) Randy Hultgren (R-IL) Lynn Jenkins (R-KS) Jim Jordan (R-OH) Doug Lamborn (R-CO) Kenny Marchant (R-TX) Thomas Massie (R-KY) Tom McClintock (R-CA) Mark Meadows (R-NC) Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) Mick Mulvaney (R-SC) Randy Neugebauer (R-TX) Steven Palazzo (R-MS) Steve Pearce (R-NM) Scott Perry (R-PA) Tom Petri (R-WI) Mike Pompeo (R-KS) Tom Price (R-GA) Phil Roe (R-TN) Todd Rokita (R-IN) Keith Rothfus (R-PA) Ed Royce (R-CA) Paul Ryan (R-WI) Matt Salmon (R-AZ) David Schweikert (R-AZ) Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI) Marlin Stutzman (R-IN) Mac Thornberry (R-TX) Randy Weber (R-TX) Brad Wenstrup (R-OH) Roger Williams (R-TX) Joe Wilson (R-SC) Rob Woodall (R-GA) Kevin Yoder (R-KS) Ted Yoho (R-FL)
The most
high-profile Congressman on the list is Paul Ryan, failed vice
presidential nominee. It also includes Mo Brooks, Ted Yoho, Ron
DeSantis, Steven Palazzo and John Fleming from Alabama, Florida,
Louisiana and Mississippi, all of which are states that received
much-needed federal aid following Hurricane Katrina, the only hurricane
in American history that was more costly than Sandy . Speaker Boehner did not vote.Related Governor Cuomo: 'Extreme Weather, I Believe, Is Here to Stay' At
a news conference today, Governor Cuomo gave the first estimate on
exactly what the cost of Hurricane Sandy is going to be, stating that
the storm ... Read...
This list
also includes the entire Republican representation from Arizona, Kansas,
Maryland, Montana and New Mexico (Maryland, Montana and New Mexico are
only represented by one Republican each).
While it
took Congress more than two months to approve any federal aid for Sandy
victims, it took just 10 days after Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
This aid
package is only, however, the tip of the iceberg, as Congress will take
another vote on an additional $51 billion aid package on January 15. In a joint statement , New York and New Jersey governors Andrew Cuomo and Chris Christie called the $9.7 billion a good start:

"Today's action by the House was a necessary and critical first step
towards delivering aid to the people of New Jersey and New York. While
we are pleased with this progress, today was just a down payment and it
is now time to go even further and pass the final and more complete,
clean disaster aid bill. We are trusting Congress to act accordingly on
January 15th and pass the final $51 billion instrumental for long-term
rebuilding in order for New Jersey, New York and our people to recover
after the severe devastation of Hurricane Sandy."

.

"I rise today to express grave doubts about the Obama administration's counterterrorism policies and programs. Counterterrorism is often shrouded in secrecy, as it should be, so let us judge by the results. In barely four years in office, five Jihadists have reached their targets in the United States under Barack Obama: the Boston Marathon bomber, the underwear bomber, the Times Square Bomber, the Fort Hood shooter, and in my own state-the Little Rock recruiting office shooter. In the seven years after 9/11 under George W. Bush, how many terrorists reached their target in the United States? Zero! We need to ask "why is the Obama administration failing in its mission to stop terrorism before it reaches its targets in the United States."

The demonized chemical compound is a boon to plant life and has little correlation with global temperature.
Of all of the world's chemical compounds, none has a worse reputation than carbon dioxide. Thanks to the single-minded demonization of this natural and essential atmospheric gas by advocates of government control of energy production, the conventional wisdom about carbon dioxide is that it is a dangerous pollutant. That's simply not the case. Contrary to what some would have us believe, increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere will benefit the increasing population on the planet by increasing agricultural productivity.

The cessation of observed global warming for the past decade or so has shown how exaggerated NASA's and most other computer predictions of human-caused warming have been-and how little correlation warming has with concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide. As many scientists have pointed out, variations in global temperature correlate much better with solar activity and with complicated cycles of the oceans and atmosphere. There isn't the slightest evidence that more carbon dioxide has caused more extreme weather.

The current levels of carbon dioxide in the earth's atmosphere, approaching 400 parts per million, are low by the standards of geological and plant evolutionary history. Levels were 3,000 ppm, or more, until the Paleogene period (beginning about 65 million years ago). For most plants, and for the animals and humans that use them, more carbon dioxide, far from being a "pollutant" in need of reduction, would be a benefit. This is already widely recognized by operators of commercial greenhouses, who artificially increase the carbon dioxide levels to 1,000 ppm or more to improve the growth and quality of their plants.

Using energy from sunlight-together with the catalytic action of an ancient enzyme called rubisco, the most abundant protein on earth-plants convert carbon dioxide from the air into carbohydrates and other useful molecules. Rubisco catalyzes the attachment of a carbon-dioxide molecule to another five-carbon molecule to make two three-carbon molecules, which are subsequently converted into carbohydrates. (Since the useful product from the carbon dioxide capture consists of three-carbon molecules, plants that use this simple process are called C3 plants.) C3 plants, such as wheat, rice, soybeans, cotton and many forage crops, evolved when there was much more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere than today. So these agricultural staples are actually undernourished in carbon dioxide relative to their original design.

At the current low levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide, rubisco in C3 plants can be fooled into substituting oxygen molecules for carbon-dioxide molecules. But this substitution reduces the efficiency of photosynthesis, especially at high temperatures. To get around the problem, a small number of plants have evolved a way to enrich the carbon-dioxide concentration around the rubisco enzyme, and to suppress the oxygen concentration. Called C4 plants because they utilize a molecule with four carbons, plants that use this evolutionary trick include sugar cane, corn and other tropical plants.

Although C4 plants evolved to cope with low levels of carbon dioxide, the workaround comes at a price, since it takes additional chemical energy. With high levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, C4 plants are not as productive as C3 plants, which do not have the overhead costs of the carbon-dioxide enrichment system.

That's hardly all that goes into making the case for the benefits of carbon dioxide. Right now, at our current low levels of carbon dioxide, plants are paying a heavy price in water usage. Whether plants are C3 or C4, the way they get carbon dioxide from the air is the same: The plant leaves have little holes, or stomata, through which carbon dioxide molecules can diffuse into the moist interior for use in the plant's photosynthetic cycles.

The density of water molecules within the leaf is typically 60 times greater than the density of carbon dioxide in the air, and the diffusion rate of the water molecule is greater than that of the carbon-dioxide molecule.

So depending on the relative humidity and temperature, 100 or more water molecules diffuse out of the leaf for every molecule of carbon dioxide that diffuses in . And not every carbon-dioxide molecule that diffuses into a leaf gets incorporated into a carbohydrate. As a result, plants require many hundreds of grams of water to produce one gram of plant biomass, largely carbohydrate.

Driven by the need to conserve water, plants produce fewer stomata openings in their leaves when there is more carbon dioxide in the air. This decreases the amount of water that the plant is forced to transpire and allows the plant to withstand dry conditions better.

Crop yields in recent dry years were less affected by drought than crops of the dust-bowl droughts of the 1930s, when there was less carbon dioxide. Nowadays, in an age of rising population and scarcities of food and water in some regions, it's a wonder that humanitarians aren't clamoring for more atmospheric carbon dioxide. Instead, some are denouncing it.

We know that carbon dioxide has been a much larger fraction of the earth's atmosphere than it is today, and the geological record shows that life flourished on land and in the oceans during those times. The incredible list of supposed horrors that increasing carbon dioxide will bring the world is pure belief disguised as science.

The lynching of Jesse Washington

Charred corpse of Jesse Washington suspended from utility pole. May 16, 1916, Robinson, Texas.

Postcard made of event

Jesse Washington was a mentally retarded seventeen-year-old boy. On May 8, 1916,
Lucy Fryer, a white woman, was murdered in Robinson, seven miles from Waco, Texas. While Washington's life is not well-documented, his death most certainly is. He was arrested on May 8 of that year for the rape and murder of Lucy Fryer, the 53-year old wife of a well-to-do cotton farmer. Fryer was found bludgeoned to death. Washington was spared for a week by the Waco sheriff, who successfully took him into custody before a pre-trial mob got their hands on him; Washington was then sent to Dallas for holding to prevent a local incident. To appease the mob, he was transferred back to Waco and tried for the crime just one week later. It's unclear whether Washington was guilty - evidence is scant and the trial lasted just one hour, but Washington appears to have had ample opportunity to perpetrate the act and is purported to have confessed - but his guilt or innocence in the matter was not on the mob's mind. On May 15, the well-attended trial ended, and in four minutes, the jury reached its guilty verdict. Before the 17-year old could be sentenced, and with little or no resistance offered by any of the various legal entities in the courthouse, several hundred of the onlookers (some brandishing weapons) rushed Washington and carried him out the doors.

Outside, a larger crowd waited to beat and castrate him. A chain was thrown around his neck, he was beaten, castrated, his ears cut off and dragged to the town square, where he met an immense crowd as well as the pile of dry goods boxes that was to be his end. Washington was tossed onto the boxes and coal oil was poured over him. The other end of the chain was thrown over what has become known as the Hanging Tree, and the fuel below Washington's feet was set ablaze. Immersed in the flames, he attempted to climb the blisteringly hot chain multiple times, each time to be lowered back into the cauldron. Then his fingers were cut off. It's unclear how long Washington was alive, but the event lasted more than an hour, after which his fingers and teeth were claimed as souvenirs, his body parts were separated from the torso, and the remains of Washington were dumped in a bag so they might be dragged once more through the Waco streets.

Afterwards, Washington's corpse was placed in a burlap bag and dragged
around City Hall Plaza, through the main streets of Waco, and seven miles to
Robinson, where a large black population resided. His charred corpse was hung
for public display in front of a blacksmith shop.

MONSANTO, BEES AND ROUNDUP

I wanted to write about the march and encourage all of you to get involved with the march in anyway you can, but I realized after looking at the weeds coming up in my garden that I wanted to explain Monsanto's Roundup and my dealings with it.
I remembered using it years ago in so many ways, from driveway cracks, spot spraying in my vegetable garden and my flower beds. I can say over the past 30 years I myself have used about 10,000 gallons of it in one way or another. I used it in our park systems for weed control with a backpack sprayer, using it on fields with 500 gallon tanks with booms spraying weeds along the farm roads, spraying along 5 acre fields that were planted with the intention of selling those vegetables to the public.
It did not really hit me until a few years back when I saw the real damage that Roundup does to the environment. I sprayed along a 5 mile fence line to control the weeds that were growing up into it. I came back the next day to do some spot spraying and was having my lunch at the halfway point. I looked down to see how the spray was taking when I noticed the other things I was killing.
I noticed the Milkweed, Goldenrod, Joe Pye Weed, Phlox, Dogbane, and Asters just to name a few, they were dying right in front of my eyes. I could see their leaves starting to droop and welt, and I was the one who killed them. Oh some might say that its just a small amount, but if you look at the land that we have torn up to farm and what is left for the native plants, well that was not right. I looked at the bees and the Monarchs that were all around me and I was the one who just killed their food source.
That night I started to look into the effects of Roundup on the environment and the damage that it does, it blew my mind how much more Roundup does than just kill the weeds. Monsanto's Roundup is killing off parts of the food chain, that DOES affect us! It kills the plants that feed the insects, it kills the insects that feed the birds and other animals, it kills our environment, Monsanto's Roundup kills us!
Being in the nursery business I see Roundup being used in so many applications and I have talked to homeowners that use illegally along their shoreline, homeowners that over spray it to kill shrubs, homeowners that don't dilute it so they can kill the plant faster. I have seen people use it not diluted to kill Buckthorn with a hand pump sprayer not realizing the drift of the spray and what it does.
Now here is more about Monsanto and why they have Farmers use Roundup on their crops which we eat. Monsanto has genetically engineered certain crop seeds, such as soybeans, beets, cotton and corn, to be resistant to Roundup and suffer no ill effects from the herbicide. This allows the crops to be doused with the herbicide for weed control without killing the crop itself. Can you imagine the amount of Roundup Monsanto sells to cover all those millions of acres of farmland alone?
Almost half of Roundup --- 41 percent --- is glyphosate, a broad-spectrum, non selective herbicide. It can kill all kinds of plants, including perennials and grass, by being absorbed through the leaves and stalk tissue. Once in the plant, it inhibits amino acid metabolism throughout the entire system, causing the plant to slowly die. It should be kept away from ponds, lakes, rivers and all water systems, as it is highly toxic to aquatic animals. I'll translate this, Roundup will kill any plant up to 1/4 inch in diameter and if not diluted will kill a plaint up to a half inch in diameter.
France's highest court has ruled that U.S. agrochemical giant Monsanto had not told the truth about the safety of its best-selling weed-killer, Roundup. The court confirmed an earlier judgment that Monsanto had falsely advertised its herbicide as "biodegradable" and claimed it "left the soil clean." Roundup is the world's best-selling herbicide. Roundup's main ingredient, is classed as "dangerous for the environment" by the European Union.
If you must kill weeds on those cracks and in your flower beds consider using Vinegar, and put a cone over it to spot spray. The rate would be 1/4 cup of Vinegar to one gallon of water, but mulch your flower and vegetable beds to suppress weeds, that alone will take care of your weed problem.

So there you go, the reason I stand and march against Monsanto, you might have yours and I would love to hear why you are marching. Please send me an email, mark@mngardens.com and I would like to post those stories here on this blog so you can see all the reasons people are marching.
Thanks, Mark

But then the inner snackbar took over control......
