These past couple of years, I hate certain "statements / comments" ... most of them are used by women, and all of these are from the "Twilight" movie series. I actually liked the first twilight movie, but then the series became "Twat-light". Bunch of twats running around and flying with super powers, with 30+ year California blondes cheering for them with panties soaked to the bone.

One particular line I hated was when "Bella" calls her mom, and mom says "I literally repel technology now." First time I heard my friendly over weight California blonde friend say it, I gave her a look (Some thing like this : o.0 ) and moved on.

But when several people started repeating that....

Anyway, need to focus away from ranting at Twat... errrr Twilight and Chubby Blondes.

Being a MSEE and working with technology all my life, I abhor people who don't take the time to understand basics. Its not complicated, and saying "Math is tough!" is NEVER cool! If a 10 year old can do it, then so can you.

So when the time came for my parents to try the new gifts I sent them, I was a bit apprehensive, but overall a little confident that Dad could figure it out.

A bit of a background : Dad holds a MSEE too, and worked as a Navy officer then a Senior Director for a Defense company. The guy has the Macguyver touch towards fixing everything. Yes, it was never polished and finely done, but he knew how to use every tool, fix everything. Right from shoes to refrigerators to complicated Nuclear submarines.

Ergo, the "high expectations".

So it starts off with them getting the gifts, which include computing, home entertainment, communication, and cooking products - all electronic. All purchased in the US, consequently 110V rated. I purchased them a AC to AC transformer and wrote down the operation on paper and made an instructional video (look up my channel) on how to use it.

So first night the gifts come in, Dad is missing the only component : a plug adapter : which converts an American Male plug to an Indian Male, so it can fit the Indian female wall socket. I calmly explain that ONLY the laptop's power cord can be directly fitted to the wall socket, since it is rated from 100v to 250V and all the rest need to be plugged to a power strip which is sourced from the AC to AC transformer.

I know Dad. If you cross the thought process of a mule with a heavy load climbing a steep slope and a 100 lb German Shepherd being taken to a bath and mix in the emotions of 50,000 sheep being taught the alphabet at MIT's space research laboratory, you will get to around 1/100th part of the obstinacy that my dad was inherently born with. And that obstinacy has exponentially grown over time. It is now to the extent, that if he visits a hospital, all women in labor need to have C-Sections since his mere presence affects the babies and makes them obstinate enough to not come out on their own.

Dad got the power adapter, which they call "China plug" in India, and then did not call me. He wanted to prove to Mom he could do it all by himself, and he started his engineering efforts brilliantly.

Literally.

He plugged in a D-Link wireless router (Priced at $55) directly to the wall, and made sparks to fly, as the 240V power fried the innards mercilessly. He was proceeding to test certain theories on the Cordless home phone system with multiple hand sets, when unluckily I called.

What could have been an interesting series of pops, crackles and a nice smell of ozone in the air was cut short, since I demanded he cease and desist.

Of course his comment was I had sent garbage, which was already damaged on arrival. And he proceeded to prove his theory by throwing an expensive piece of electronic equipment to the wall.

As per my Dad, violence always serves as a statement of truth. It was nary a week I had welts on my back where he had severely thrashed me, since I was playing cricket in the apartment grounds, instead of studying for my 4th grade exams. But thats a different story.

Mom was a nervous wreck, and there was a happy yelling match in progression when I interrupted. Now the funniest thing was: since we were on video chat on skype, and they were sharing one head set, it escaped their angry minds that if I am saying some thing, then it is being heard by only the person with the head set on his/hear ears. So naturally every time either assumed that the other MUST have heard what I said and proceeded to rant loudly at the other when the other goofed and did not follow the instructions given by me.

They made things a bit more interesting by putting things down and then promptly forgetting where they had put it. And with the tempers flaring, they rapidly forget the statements I had said, or jumbled them up.

This went on through three 45 minute skype calls, and I kid you not, even as a healthy young man, I had chest pains after every call!

Finally on the 4th call, I asked mom to put everything aside and write down what ever I said. I went through some basic electrical engineering, explaining DC and AC electricity, transformers, switches, etc.

In so far, 3 pieces of rather expensive electronic items have been destroyed. And I shudder to think what will happen next when we finish the first step of connecting the damn pre configured IBM Laptop to the internet and move to the home phone system or the entertainment system.

Bottom line : Don't give your parents technology, give them cash!

Iraq in ruins: Post-war life overshadowed by crumbling infrastructure, corruption, poverty

Despite Iraq being rich in natural resources and the US pouring money into its economy for over a decade, Iraqi infrastructure is constantly failing and the people are forced to beg, as RT's Lucy Kafanov reported from the war-torn country.

Read on Friday and Thursday bombings in Iraq here

In spite of billions of dollars spent on reconstruction following the decade-long conflict, many neighborhoods lack sewerage systems and trash collection services. In some settlements, there are barely any streets. Water is also a big problem, locals pointed out.

"Nobody drinks the city water because we know it's not clean. Since the war, I've had to rely on bottled water. What comes out of the tap is contaminated and makes us sick. How can we drink it?" local resident Umm Muhammad indicated.

Central power is another issue, with the system sometimes on for as little as two hours a day.

Electrician from Baghdad Abu Meria is sure the new government is to blame for the chaos that reigning in his homeland.

"It's the citizens who suffer in the end, not the government. The services are so bad and the power system has really deteriorated. There were billions spent on fixing the grid but there's little to show for it."

Abu Meria now earns four times more than before the war due to the frequent failures and blackouts all over the city.

As RT's Lucy Kafanov also discovered, the crumbling infrastructure is closely entangled with rampant corruption.

Transparency International group has ranked Iraq as the eighth most-corrupt state in the world. In the latest scandal, the country's Electricity Ministry was involved in a $1.7 billion fraud case.

On the backdrop of this, most Iraqis remain impoverished, struggling to make their ends meet. In the Al Tajiat landfill, on the outskirts of Baghdad, people are actually forced to live -- without any proper living conditions.

"There are no schools for the kids here, no electricity, no real houses. To get a drink of water we have to travel 4km. It's very difficult to live here." Watch RT's Lucy Kafanov's full report.

After our long hitchhike to Cusco we go to a town called Pisac and near this town is a village called Taray. If you walk from Pisac to Taray you will pass a house called Casa Blanca (white house).
This house has no hot water or electricity and an insect problem. I stayed 4 months in this house of hippies. Many people came and went bringing interesting stories with them.

A Lancaster bomber has
performed a flypast over Derwent reservoir, 70 years on from the
historic World War II raid on German dams.
Hundreds of onlookers gathered near the dam - one of the practice sites pilots used ahead of their top-secret mission.

More than a third of the men never returned from the raids, which required them to fly 60ft above ground.

The RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and 617 Squadron flew over the dam in Derbyshire's Hope Valley.

Only three of the 133-strong squadron are still alive. Ninety-four-year-old Les Munro, is the only surviving pilot.

More than 1,300 people were killed when the bombs hit German dams and flooded the Ruhr valley.

Of the original aircrew, three were captured and 53 were killed

'Sacrifice'
The flypast was one of a number of events taking place around England on Thursday to mark the raids of 16-17 May 1943.

The Royal British Legion will create a Field of Messages at the National Memorial Arboretum in Alrewas, Staffordshire.

Over 10,500 cardboard crests with supporters' messages will be on display at the memorial throughout the day.

And at RAF Scampton near Lincoln, where 70 years ago the bomber pilots took off on their mission, there will be a sunset ceremonyand another memorial flypast, to be broadcast on BBC2 at 19:00 BST. TheRAF is live tweeting the original wireless telegraphy signals from the raid on Thursday, through its Twitter account .
An exhibition and talk is also being held in Barry Island, Vale of Glamorgan, the hometown of a crew member Gordon Yeo, who died in 1943, and on Friday events are taking place at the Eder Dam in Germany.
"I think events like this make us remember the sacrifice those young lads made during the raid, said well-wisher Roy Taylor."They never got the recognition they deserved I don't think."

Derwent reservoir was one of the places pilots practised low-flying before the raid

The Dambusters raid was carried out by 133 airmen, flying 19 Lancaster bombers armed with the "bouncing bombs" designed by Sir Barnes Wallis.
Dr Wallis's daughter described him as a "man of peace" but said he acted out of a sense of patriotic duty.

"He was not a man of war and that is often not, I think, properly understood," Mary Stopes-Roe told the BBC. "But if you have to defend something you have to defend it and that's it, you do your duty."

He was "devastated" when he heard how many airmen had been lost, she said. 'Very successful'

Dambusters raid: Retrace their daring journey
Compared to today's pilots, who must fly 250ft above ground, they flew incredibly low at 60ft. They alsohad to fly in the dark for the night-time raid.
They flew so low, according to historian Dan Snow, that one hit the sea, tearing off the bomb carried by the plane. Another flew into high voltage electricity cables and was engulfed in flames.
Codenamed Operation Chastise, 56 of the men who took off on the mission did not return.

Out of 19 bombers, eight were shot down and 53 were killed.

Eight-year-old Jack Porter, who travelled with his father from Manchester to watch the flypast, said: "I can't believe they flew so low in the dark. They were very brave.
"It was brilliant to see the Lancaster today."

The military impact of the Dambusters raid, immortalised in a 1955 film starring Michael Redgrave, is disputed.

"I believe from an operational point of view they were very successful," veteran Les Munro told the BBC. "They had achieved the two major primary targets."
Writing for the BBC news website, Dan Snow said : "No raid mounted by so few aircraft had ever caused such extensive material damage.

"It did not bring German war production to a permanent halt, but nobody had expected it to."

Canadian rear gunner Fred Sutherland, 89, and 91-year-old Squadron Leader George 'Johnny' Johnson are the only other two surviving members of 617 Squadron.

Emergency Spacewalk To Fix Ammonia Leak

Astronauts Chris Cassidy and Tom Marshburn make it look easy...

(CNN) -- Two astronauts conducted a spacewalk Saturday to address an ammonia leak in the International Space Station's cooling system, a mission that ended with NASA optimistic the potentially major problem had been fixed.

In addition to inspecting the site of the leak, NASA astronauts Chris Cassidy and Tom Marshburn removed and replaced a 260-pound pump controller box, NASA explained.

Afterward, Cassidy and Marshburn couldn't detect any sign of a leak -- which might have been manifest, in this case, as ammonia snow flakes -- when space agency officials back on Earth ran the new pump. Still, NASA noted that the area needs to be monitored long-term to prove that the problem has been fixed.

"No leaks!" tweeted Chris Hadfield of Canada, the space station's commander, who choreographed the spacewalk. "We're bringing Tom & Chris back inside. ... This is an amazing place & time."

The entire spacewalk took 5 hours and 30 minutes -- an hour less than expected.

First detected early Thursday morning, the leak was causing ammonia to enter space at a rate of 5 pounds per day, Mike Suffredini, NASA's space station program manager, told reporters Friday. Ammonia is used to cool the solar arrays that provide electricity to station systems.

The discovery spurred teams at NASA, over a busy 24-hour stretch, to go into "a full-court press to understand what the failure is" and how to address it, NASA flight director Norm Knight said Friday. That set the stage for the spacewalk involving three of the space station's six-man crew.

The leak was in a cooling loop in a solar array that has leaked before, and astronauts tried to fix it in November. It's unclear whether the leak detected this week was the same one or a new issue.

The ammonia coolant for the power channel, one of eight used to supply electricity to the station, would likely have run out by late Friday morning had it not been shut down, NASA said.

"It is a serious situation, but between crew and experts on the ground, it appears to have been stabilized," Hadfield tweeted Thursday.

Still, the space station's crew -- which also includes three Russian cosmonauts -- were never in danger because of it, NASA said. Moreover, the agency has said the rest of the orbiter was otherwise operating normally.

Both Marshburn and Hadfield are scheduled to leave the space station at 7:08 p.m. ET Monday with Russian cosmonaut Roman Romanenko, and NASA said Friday that the spacewalk wouldn't affect those plans.

Cassidy and Russian cosmonauts Alexander Misurkin and Pavel Vinogradov will stay behind. They'll eventually be joined by NASA astronaut Karen Nyberg, Russian cosmonaut Fiyodor Yurchikhin and European Space Agency astronaut Luca Parmitano, who are due to launch aboard a Russian Soyuz spacecraft on May 28.

NASA coolant leak repair spacewalk

May 11 , 2013 - In a spacewalk, Astronauts Chris Cassidy and Tom Marshburn replaced a pump component that has been gushing ammonia coolant.

The spacewalk got underway at 5:44 a.m. PDT and was expected to last more than six hours, according to NASA. The astronauts removed and replaced the faulty pump controller box on the far port truss of the International Space Station. No evidence of a continued ammonia leak was evident as NASA restarted the faulty coolant loop.

NASA showed the two working in painstakingly slow motion in alternating darkness and light as the station circled Earth. Cassidy used power and hand tools to retrieve a spare controller box, while ground managers instructed him about such things as how many foot-pounds of torque to apply to bolts, and how long it would be until they had sunlight.

Amid the sober and complex choreography, Commander Chris Hadfield tweeted commentary and trivia. "Chris and Tom are safely outside ISS, hard at work in the vacuum of space, looking for signs of the ammonia leak. THAT was a busy AM inside," he wrote early in the walk.

"Do you hear how different their voices sound at the suit's low pressure? Turns out in the 4.2 psi oxygen you can't whistle -- air's too thin," he wrote later.

The leak, observed Thursday, comes from a pump that circulates ammonia coolant to one of eight solar panel systems that provide electricity to the station. That coolant loop has caused trouble for some time, and crew members attempted to locate and repair a leak in November, according to International Space Station program manager Michael Suffredini.

The spacewalk was the 168th for the International Space Station but was considered precedent-setting because of how rapidly the unplanned repair task unfolded. Although the six-member crew of Expedition 35 was in no danger, and there are seven other solar panels to provide power, NASA officials wanted to get the system back in operation to avoid anomalies in the power supply that could affect experiments and other tasks planned for the mission.

The truss where the pair were working, called P6, was launched to the station in November 2000 and is one of the oldest components of the station's backbone. It was relocated from its original installation position to the far left side of the station during a Discovery mission in 2007.

The spacewalk is the third time Cassidy and Marshburn have worked in tandem outside the station.

President Bashar al-Assad on Wednesday visited the
Umawyeen Electricity Station at Tishreen Park in Damascus and
congratulated its staff and all workers of Syria on the occasion of the
Workers' Day. During this visit, President
al-Assad said that the values of work are associated with the meanings
of dedication, building, production, strength and good, all of which are
embodied in Syria's workers who always participated in bolstering
points of strength and surpassing weaknesses in order to build a proud,
powerful Syria.President al-Assad said that
Syria's workers proved during the war which has been targeting the
country for over two years that they will always remain one of the
elements of Syria's strength, and not the other way around, asserting
that the attempts to target the infrastructure which was built with
Syrian hands will not dissuade workers from continuing to carry out
their duties, despite the fact that hundreds of them were martyred at
the hands of terrorists.
President al-Assad pointed out that one of the most
important groups among workers are electricity workers and services
sectors workers who exerted their best efforts to keep these sectors
working even if that meant risking their lives, which is something all
Syrians appreciate particularly since the terrorists and their backers
sought to drown Syria in darkness, both on the intellectual and social
level and on the level of depriving citizens from basic services, mainly
electricity.His Excellency said that
Syria's workers stood up against the terrorists' attempts and maintained
the availability of services, noting that this is one of the components
of the steadfastness of the country in the face of the war targeting it
and its citizens.President al-Assad toured
the station and was briefed by its supervisors on the nature of their
work and services they provide. He lauded the great efforts they are
exerting, particularly their efforts to restore electricity as soon as
possible in areas witnessing exceptional security conditions despite
that terrorists target them and that there have been martyrs among the
workers' ranks. For their part, workers at the station thanked
President al-Assad for this gesture on their day, affirming that the
difficulties they face will not dissuade them from carrying out their
national duty and help preserve the electricity infrastructure which is a
necessity for every citizen. In a statement
to journalists after the visit, Electricity Minister Imad Khamis said
that this visit shows President al-Assad's constant concern and care for
the working class, and that it should motivate workers and make them
more determined to work hard.Khamis noted
that the electricity sector is one of the sectors that were targeted the
most by terrorists, as many workers in this sector were martyred while
repairing and maintaining electricity grids, adding that workshops are
working around the clock to restore the electric grid to its normal
state. The Minister said that Workers Day
symbolizes the solidarity and unity of the working class and its
victories and continuing achievements.For
his part, the engineer in charge of relay stations in Damascus city,
Ayman Qudmani, said that President al-Assad's visit on Workers' Day
expresses his affection and care for the people of Syria in general and
the working class in particular, asserting that workers in the
electricity sector are shouldering big responsibilities and support the
Armed Forces in defending the country. In
turn, technical assistant at the station Ahmad Rateb al-Afaghani said
that electricity workers will continue to maintain the electric grid and
fix all malfunctions and outages despite the threat posed by terrorist
groups, while station worker Issam Hasanen said that Syria's workers
will protect and the achievements and gains they acquired and will work
harder to repair the damages caused by terrorists to public
establishments.

Note: This is my original video, that I also uploaded to Youtube. I try to create original content, and Liveleak gets the best of it. :)

Many people do not understand how electricity works. And most end up destroying their prized and expensive electronic items when trying to use it abroad.

This video attempts to de-mystify the science behind it.

Use case: Sending American made electronic items to India. Want parents to use them.

Concerns: American Electronic items are rated (mostly) to be used with American Electricity supply of 110 Volts, 60Hz. Where as in India it is 240V, 50Hz.

Alternate use case: This video will also help use foreign made electronic items in North America or Europe or any other country.

Caution: Voltage transformer is not the same as the "voltage converter" plugs you can buy for a few dollars at a travel store.

Also needed: plug adapter: to be able to fit your American male plug end in to a foreign female plug socket.

Notes: Please donate to help me create more informational videos.
