Now an ambitious Detroit businessman thinks he has a bombshell idea for transforming the empty lot where Old Tiger Stadium used to be. Francois DeMonique told WWJ City Beat Reporter Vickie Thomas he wants to see the site at Michigan Avenue and Trumbull transformed into an all African American hotel and entertainment complex. "I love this city and I believe in this city. I've put a lot of effort into it and my company, which is Urban Caf'e Corporation, we are dedicated to being a part of the new face of Detroit. This may be just the first African-American development built from the ground up," he said. DeMonique's vision for Urban Caf'e Detroit is one where visitors can stay in a hotel, attend a live concert, have a first-class dinner and dance the night away all under one roof without having to drive to separate destinations. "We're anticipating the Old Tiger Stadium site, but there are other options and sites that we are currently in negotiation with, private enterprises and private owners," he said. The look of the building would be aesthetically pleasing, DeMonique said, with a streamlined, avant-garde look that will instantly raise the profile of the area in which it is built. He said the facility will influence the city's skyline and "lift the spirits of Detroit's residents and visitors." DeMonique, who's been working on the project since 2009, said the complex would focus on "celebrating the positives of many nations around the world" from the perspectives of art, dance, music, cuisines and the other aspects. He described the venue as being "the place to be for locals and a must-see establishment for tourists." DeMonique said the designs and concepts will cover all 100 suites, showcasing different countries of Africa and the Caribbean. The venue's central restaurant will be theme-based with 500 seats. DeMonique said the food will be mostly all-American bistro with a "Rain Forest Caf'e" vibe. DeMonique, who was born in West Africa, said he regards the venture as an effort to reach out to an entire community by sharing African-American culture, cuisines and other heritages in all their variety. The suspect Caleb Lawrence McGillvary was captured by Philadelphia Police at the Greyhound Bus station in Philadelphia. The 24-year-old Internet celebrity is well known on Facebook and YouTube as "Kai the Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker." McGillvary gained fame online for his intervention in a Feb. 1 attack in Fresno, California. He was riding with a man who drove into a utility worker. The Fresno Bee reported that McGillvary pulled a hatchet from his backpack and struck the driver in the head after he confronted the Pacific Gas &amp; Electric worker. McGillvary is homeless but considers himself "homefree" and relies on the generosity of strangers for food, lodging and transportation. He is also known as Kai Lawrence, Caleb Kai Lawrence and Kai Nicodemus. The victim, Joseph Galfy, was found inside his home on Starlite Drive on Monday after officers received a call to check on his well-being. An autopsy performed the following day determined that Galfy died as a result of "blunt force trauma", according to Union County Prosecutor Theodore J. Romankow. Investigators said Kai met the attorney near Times Square, and a surveillance camera captured images of them. The men later went back to the victim's house, officials said. A post was made to his Facebook page on Tuesday in which Kai claims he was raped by the man. Kai later reached out to some fans in South Jersey, who took him to a train station. He claimed to be headed to Philadelphia and then to Georgia. Based on the investigation, authorities know that McGillvary has cut his hair in an attempt to alter his appearance.
