Not my usual but it got me thinking about how this might be targeting mail order firearms and ammunition. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now Obama targets your FedEx, UPS packages
Shipper warns move 'has potential to threaten privacy of all customers'The Obama administration is demanding the nation's two biggest
shipping companies police the contents of Americans' sealed packages,
and a FedEx spokesman is warning that the move "has the potential to
threaten the privacy of all customers that send or receive packages."
FedEx and UPS are in the Justice Department's cross-hairs for not
flagging shipments of illegally prescribed drugs the companies say they
had no way of knowing were in their possession.
Criminal charges could be coming against the carriers, even though
the government has not alleged any deliberate wrongdoing by the
companies.
FedEx spokesman Patrick Fitzgerald said his company has a 40-year
history of actively assisting the government crackdown on any criminal
conduct, but he told WND this probe was very different from the start.
"What is unusual and really disturbing is it became clear to us along
the way that FedEx was being targeted for some level criminal activity
as it relates to these medicines that are being shipped from pharmacies,
and we find it to be completely absurd because it's really not our
role," Fitzgerald said. "We have no way of knowing what is legal and not
within the packages that we're picking up and delivering in this
situation."
"At the heart of the investigation are sealed packages that are being
sent by, as far as we can tell, licensed pharmacies. These are
medicines with legal prescriptions written by licensed physicians. So
it's difficult for us to understand where we would have some role in
this. We are a transportation company that picks up and delivers close
to 10 million packages every day. They are sealed packages, so we have
no way of knowing specifically what's inside and we have no interest in
violating the privacy rights of our customers," Fitzgerald said.
In addition to the unrealistic expectation that the federal
government seems to have for the companies to know what's in every
package, Fitzgerald said protecting the rights of customers is paramount
and the issues go hand-in-hand.
"They clearly are attempting to put some responsibility for the
legality of the contents of these packages. That's why for us it goes
far beyond even just the online pharmacy situation. This really has a
chilling effect. It has the potential to threaten the privacy of all
customers that send or receive packages via FedEx because the government
is assigning a role on us as law enforcement or taking on their role in
a way that is not appropriate," Fitzgerald said.
FedEx sought to diffuse the standoff by offering to stop doing
business with any pharmacies that the government suspected to be
involved in illegal activities. The Justice Department declined, citing
the potential for the pharmacies to sue over a lack of due process.
"If the government were to come to us and give us the name of a
customer that's engaged in some level of illegal activity, we can
immediately stop shipping for that customer. We will not tolerate any
illegal activity within our networks," Fitzgerald said. "What we want
here is a solution that will apply for the entire industry and serve the
public's interest. That's why we find it completely absurd and, to a
large degree, stunning that the government is not working with us on
that solution as they have with other problems in the past. As long as
they're not doing that, there's really no solution even if they were to
pursue an investigation or criminal charges against a specific company.
There needs to be an industry-wide solution that will put a stop to this
problem."
That leaves FedEx and UPS with the task of stopping illegal shipments from sources the government will not divulge.

"The comparison that we've made is a no-fly list. It's as if the
government were to go to major commercial airlines and accuse them of
some level of criminal activity if they were to allow somebody on the
no-fly list onto one of their planes without providing them a no-fly
list," Fitzgerald said. "What we want here is the no-fly list for online
pharmacies. If they are aware of some level of illegal activity by some
number of pharmacies, simply provide us that list and we will stop
providing service. It's a very simple solution."
Fitzpatrick said no other private carriers are being targeted by the
Justice Department, and he has no evidence to suggest this probe is
designed to boost the financially strapped U.S. Postal Service at the
expense of private competitors.
UPS is currently negotiating a settlement with the government, but FedEx is fighting this all the way.

"Settlement is not an option for us when there's no illegal activity on our part," Fitzpatrick said

The global economy may be on the crux of another slowdown. This was made evident in March, when global delivery bellwether FedEx Corporation (NYSE/FDX) reported a 31% decline in its third-quarter earnings and, more importantly, cut its forecast for fiscal 2013.

What was interesting was that the announcement was followed by the insider sale of 202,000 shares of FedEx by the company's President and CEO, Frederick W. Smith, according to Edgar Online. But the insider selling was not isolated, as there have been eight insider sales, versus only two insider buys, over the past six months, according to Thomson Financial. Institutions have also been selling, with ownership down 6.1% quarter-to-quarter.

The results from FedEx suggest that the global economy may be set for some stalling, since the company represents a good barometer of global economic activity. And the insider selling also doesn't really help the company.

On Wednesday morning, the case for the slowing in the global economy was supported by a report from the World Trade Organization (WTO). The report predicted that trade in the global economy would rise a mere 3.3% in 2013, well below the previous guidance calling for growth of 4.5% and just ahead of the lackluster two-percent rise in 2012. (Source: Heilprin, J., "Global Trade To Be Weaker Than Expected," Associated Press, April 10, 2013.) The WTO report also said the average growth was 5.3% over the past two decades, so the global economy may soon be facing another headwind that will impact economic renewal.

Looking at the trade situation from another angle, the Baltic Dry Index, a commonly referenced gauge used to measure the demand for shipping capacity, remains negative.

The chart of the Baltic Dry Index below indicates a downward-sloping channel since its peak in 2008, when the Great Recession hit. The index has subsequently rallied, but in this case, it wa... Read More

In the third quarter of 2012, companies
in the S&P 500 reported negative corporate earnings growth. In the
fourth quarter, they squeaked in a small gain. But looking ahead, corporate earnings
growth becomes worrisome. Remember: for the stock market to rise there
must be fundamental reasons, as hopes can only run for so long.
For the first quarter of 2013, companies
in the S&P 500 are expected to post negative corporate earnings
growth again. The estimate: corporate earnings will decline by 0.6% in
the first quarter. (Source: FactSet, March 15, 2013.) So far, of the 108
S&P 500 companies that provided guidance about their corporate
earnings, 77% of them have issued negative guidance.
Some of the most renowned S&P 500
companies are worried about their corporate earnings. For its fiscal
quarter ended February 28, 2013, FedEx Corporation (NYSE/FDX) reported a
drop of 31% in its corporate earnings from the previous quarter.
And the company cut back on its earnings
outlook. For fiscal 2013, FedEx expects corporate earnings of
$6.00-$6.20 a share compared to its previous guidance of $6.20-$6.60 per
share. (Source: Goldstein, S., "FedEx Posts 31% Profit Drop, Cuts
Outlook," MarketWatch , March 20, 2013.)
While explaining the reasons for its
weaker corporate earnings, FedEx's CEO, Frederick Smith, said, "The
quarter was very challenging due to continued weakness in international
air freight markets, pressure on yields due to industry overcapacity and
customers selecting less expensive and slower-transit services."
(Source: Ibid.)
Aside from the ominous decline in
corporate earnings, the people who are the closest to the public
companies, corporate insiders, are fleeing at a record pace.
According to Vickers Weekly Insider Report , in the first week of February, insiders sold eight shares for every one share they purchased (a sell-to-buy r... Read More

Why Does The U.S. Government Treat Military Veterans Like Human Garbage?

By Michael, on August 29th, 2012

(WARNING - LONG ARTICLE)

The way that the U.S. government treats military veterans is absolutely disgraceful. Men and women that have given everything for this nation are literally being treated like human garbage by their own government. After watching how vets are treated, it is absolutely amazing that anyone is still volunteering to be a part of the military. We pay those in the military like crap, we keep sending our best soldiers back to Afghanistan and Iraq again and again, we don't equip them properly, military suicides are at a record pace, hundreds of thousands of applications for veteran benefits are hopelessly backlogged, homelessness and unemployment among vets is much higher than for the general population, the condition of most VA hospitals is an absolute disgrace, and to top everything off now the Obama administration has started labeling military veterans as "potential terrorists". What you are about to read should make you very angry. The abuse, neglect and outright disrespect that military vets receive from their own government is absolutely shocking. We owe these men and women a great debt for the service that they have performed for our nation, but instead the federal government kicks them to the curb and treats them with no honor whatsoever. The way a nation treats military vets says a lot about the character of that nation, and right now the way that America treats veterans says that we have the character of a steaming pile of manure.

Multiple Tours Of Duty

The U.S. military just keeps sending young men and women back to Iraq and Afghanistan over and over again without any regard for what the consequences might be.

If you can believe it, an astounding 20 percent of all active duty soldiers in the U.S. Army are on at least their third tour of duty.

Many others have done four tours of duty or more.

The following is from a recent Christian Science Monitor article ....

Some 107,000 Army soldiers have been deployed to war three or more times since 2001, or some 20 percent of the active-duty force. More than 50,000 of those currently in uniform have completed four or more combat tours, Army figures indicate.

The physical, mental and emotional toll of these multiple tours of duty should not be underestimated. It is absolutely unprecedented in U.S. history for so many men to be sent back into frequent combat situations so repeatedly. The price of this foolishness could potentially be felt throughout our society for decades to come.

Record Number Of Suicides

The fact that many of our soldiers are spending way too much time in active war zones is a big reason why military suicides are at a record pace so far in 2012.

The stress of combat duty builds up over time. The physical, mental and emotional fatigue that comes with serving in combat is immense. Many soldiers see their marriages end, and others are left with severe physical and mental disabilities.

At some point many serving in the military cannot take it anymore and they commit suicide.

During the month of July, there were 56 suicides in the U.S. military in just 31 days.

That is absolutely disgraceful, but very little is being done about the underlying causes of these suicides.

Paying To Get Your Medal?

Many U.S. soldiers return home from war only to find that they are being billed by their own government.

One soldier even discovered that he was going to have to pay a 21 dollar shipping fee to get his Purple Heart. The following is from the Huffington Post ....

War comes with an incalculable human cost. And apparently a shipping fee of about $21.

Retired Sgt. Major Rob Dickerson says that's the price he was forced to pay when his Purple Heart - the medal issued to soldiers wounded in action - arrived at his door, C.O.D.

Instead of being awarded the military honor in a formal ceremony, the vet with 29 years in the service was handed his award, and a shipping invoice, by a FedEx deliveryman outside his Sioux Falls, S.D., home.

Endless Waiting For Veteran Benefits

You would think that soldiers returning from war should quickly and easily be able to apply for the veteran benefits that they are owed.

Unfortunately, the complete opposite is the case.

As I have written about previously , applying for veteran benefits is extremely complicated, and VA employees are actually paid bonuses for denying claims....

The truth is that we have made it extremely difficult for our military veterans to claim the benefits that we have promised them. Vets have to fill out an absurdly complicated 23 page application and if they make even one small mistake their applications can be stonewalled for years. The U.S. Veterans Administration actually has a policy under which they pay large bonuses to employees that meet certain application processing goals. This explains why approximately 70% of the claims submitted to the Veterans Administration are refused or sent back to be redone. In fact, using the Freedom of Information Act, one local NBC station was able to learn that $250,000 was paid in bonuses to VA employees who work inside the Poff Federal Building in Roanoke, Virginia in just one year alone.

Not only that, but a report issued by the VA's Office of Inspector General said the department issued millions of dollars in performance awards to employees nationwide over a two year period in 2007 and 2008.

According to CNN, one retired VA official was singled out for improperly approving a very large number of bonuses and the report said that she "acted as if she was given a blank checkbook to write unlimited monetary awards."

Even if you do fill out your paperwork correctly, at best you are going to be waiting many months to find out if your claim is approved or not....

The average claim adjudication wait time is as few as 183 days or as many as 300, depending on who you ask. Claims processed in Oakland, Calif., the second-worst backlogged region in the nation according to a May Inspector General's report, take nearly a year to get approved or denied. The backlog worsened in 2010 when VA Secretary Eric Shinseki added a handful of new medical conditions to the list of ailments presumed connected with exposure to the Vietnam-era herbicide Agent Orange, a move that was lauded by veterans' groups. But this month the VA officials announced they were nearing the end of processing about 230,000 retroactive Agent Orange claims. And the majority of the nearly 920,000 total claims still pending before the department remain overdue.

Many veterans feel that they would be better off sending their documents into a black hole than sending them to the VA. The level of negligence at some VA offices is absolutely shocking....

Back in 2009, a VA office in Detroit turned in 16,000 unprocessed mail and 717 unprocessed documents that were stuck in storage and hadn't even been looked at. Many other documents were found in shredding bins, not just in one office but in several regional offices.

The truth is that thousands upon thousands of vets that legitimately should be getting benefits are having their claims denied. Just check out the following example from a recent Veterans Today article ....

In one case, we found a veteran with 40 percent of his brain removed found to be healthy and employable. He was also missing his right arm. The physician who examined him over looked the arm and failed to note the cognitive degeneration the traumatic brain injury had caused.

What in the world is wrong with us?

How can we treat our vets this way?

Horrific Economic Problems

The unemployment rate for veterans is much higher than the overall rate of unemployment, and military veterans are losing their homes at a much faster rate than the general population as well.

According to Veterans Today , a shockingly high percentage of military families have been losing their homes since 2008....

Figures lie, some groups are counted, some are not. But the lowest figures available have one in three families, this includes active duty serving overseas, reservists and National Guard and veterans losing their homes since 2008.

Two thirds of those are now "split up" with at least one member listed as "homeless." Almost all are, according to official figures, "living in poverty."

200,000 Military Veterans Sleeping On The Streets Of America

The U.S. government does not prepare our vets to come back and reintegrate into society. They just kind of kick them to the curb and hope that they can find jobs.

Sadly, homeless vets will be sleeping the streets of every major U.S. city tonight. The following is from a recent article in the Los Angeles Times ....

According to the latest count by the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority, the number of homeless individuals in Los Angeles County dropped by 3% between 2009 and 2011. The numbers declined for all groups except one: veterans. There were 9,000 homeless veterans here in 2011, a 24% increase over 2009. And the number of chronically homeless veterans - individuals who are homeless because of severe mental disabilities - increased by more than 100%, from 1,243 to 2,520.

And more are coming. California's Department of Veterans Affairs estimated in 2009 that 28,000 vets would return from Iraq and Afghanistan per year during this administration.

Overall, it is estimated that 200,000 military veterans will be sleeping on the streets of America tonight.

Say a prayer for them because they need it.

The Shocking Condition Of VA Hospitals

When wounded soldiers come home from the battlefield the U.S. government has a responsibility to take care of them properly.

Unfortunately, the truth is that many facilities for veterans are absolute hellholes. The following is from a recent article in the Washington Post ....

Behind the door of Army Spec. Jeremy Duncan's room, part of the wall is torn and hangs in the air, weighted down with black mold. When the wounded combat engineer stands in his shower and looks up, he can see the bathtub on the floor above through a rotted hole. The entire building, constructed between the world wars, often smells like greasy carry-out. Signs of neglect are everywhere: mouse droppings, belly-up cockroaches, stained carpets, cheap mattresses.

This is the world of Building 18, not the kind of place where Duncan expected to recover when he was evacuated to Walter Reed Army Medical Center from Iraq last February with a broken neck and a shredded left ear, nearly dead from blood loss.

How in the world can we do this to our vets?

Today, it takes military vets an average of seven months to get an appointment at a VA facility.

They are not getting the care that they need, and it would be a tremendous understatement to say that the condition of many VA facilities is absolutely horrendous.

A while back, ABC News did an in-depth investigation of conditions at VA facilities across the United States. What ABC News found was absolutely shocking. The following are just a few of the things that they discovered during the course of their investigation.....

*Bathrooms filthy with what appeared to be human excrement

*Dirty linens from some patients mixed in with clean supplies

*Examining tables that had dried blood and medications still on them

*Equipment used to sterilize surgical instruments that had broken down

*Some patients were forced to beg for food and water

*Veterans that were neglected so badly that they developed horrific bedsores and dangerous infections

This is the kind of thing you would expect in a third world country, not the United States of America.

Funerals And "End Of Life Counseling"

The federal government does not seem to have much respect for veterans at the end of their lives either.

You would think that vets should be able to have the funeral services of their own choosing, but in some areas of the country the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has been caught banning the words "God" and "Jesus" during funeral services for veterans.

Perhaps instead of spending their time poking their noses into funeral services they should spend their time processing some of those backlogged claims for veteran benefits.

And the "end of life counseling" that many veterans are receiving is extremely disrespectful as well. The following is from an article in the Wall Street Journal that described the kind of "end of life counseling" that the federal government provides veterans....

"Your Life, Your Choices" presents end-of-life choices in a way aimed at steering users toward predetermined conclusions, much like a political "push poll." For example, a worksheet on page 21 lists various scenarios and asks users to then decide whether their own life would be "not worth living."

The circumstances listed include ones common among the elderly and disabled: living in a nursing home, being in a wheelchair and not being able to "shake the blues." There is a section which provocatively asks, "Have you ever heard anyone say, 'If I'm a vegetable, pull the plug'?" There also are guilt-inducing scenarios such as "I can no longer contribute to my family's well being," "I am a severe financial burden on my family" and that the vet's situation "causes severe emotional burden for my family."

When the government can steer vulnerable individuals to conclude for themselves that life is not worth living, who needs a death panel?

The Obama Administration Has Labeled Military Veterans As "Potential Terrorists"

On top of everything else, the Department of Homeland Security has labeled military veterans as potential terrorists .

The following is a quote from a DHS report entitled " Rightwing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment "....

The possible passage of new restrictions on firearms and the return of military veterans facing significant challenges reintegrating into their communities could lead to the potential emergence of terrorist groups or lone wolf extremists capable of carrying out violent attacks.

Sadly, this kind of philosophy is not just reflected in policy papers. Now we are actually starting to see military veterans rounded up and shipped off to mental institutions for "evaluation" if they express views that the government does not like.

For example, you have probably already heard about the Brandon Raub case by now. Brandon Raub is a 26-year-old military veteran who was forcibly detained by the local police, the FBI and the Secret Service on August 16th. He was shipped off to a psychiatric facility because of song lyrics and political views that he had posted on his Facebook page.

Thankfully, the Rutherford Institute agreed to defend him and he was released a few days ago.

But if he had not had a really good lawyer he could have been rotting in a mental institution for years .

Unfortunately this does not appear to be an isolated incident.

Just check out the following example from a recent article by Paul Joseph Watson ....

Radio host Steve Quayle was sent news of an Army combat veteran and Purple Heart recipient in west central Ohio who was the victim of a police raid on the evening of August 22nd during which Miami County Ohio Sheriff's deputies executed a search warrant to seize the man's firearms for the "safety of the defendant and the general public," according to the warrant.

The veteran, who is currently unnamed, had his guns taken because he was adjudged to be mentally incompetent, despite the fact that his previous VA psychiatric evaluations were all clear, he is not on medication, and he had no criminal record. The man appears to be a respected member of the community - he works for a Christian company and his father is a police officer and a pastor.

Once a military vet is determined to be "mentally ill", he or she can be rounded up by the authorities at any time.

And tons of vets are being labeled as mentally ill these days. In fact, one study discovered that approximately one-third of all military veterans returning from Afghanistan and Iraq were officially determined to be mentally ill.

It is very dangerous to be a military veteran these days.

So why should anyone volunteer to be in the military at this point?

It has become abundantly clear that the federal government is not on the side of veterans.

The federal government wants lots of warm bodies to throw into battle, but when those bodies get broken the government is not there to pick up the pieces.

How we treat our veterans is a national disgrace.

Wake up America.

'New weapon of democracy'
A gun-magazine company in Boulder, Colo., has announced a campaign
based on the Berlin Airlift to help Coloradoans "trapped inside occupied
territory" to purchase large-capacity magazines before the Legislature
passes a series of gun-control bills next week.
Magpul Industries manufactures magazines and other gun accessories
for private, law-enforcement and military use. WND recently reported on
how the company may be forced to relocate if the Democrat-controlled
Legislature moves forward with plans to ban high capacity magazines,
which is one of the company's key products.

Following the president's lead on the firearms issue, Democrats in
the House passed a series of gun-control bills that the Obama
administration has said would help them pass similar measures in other
states.
Vice President Joe Biden "said it would send a strong message to the
rest of the country that a western state had passed gun-control bills,"
Tony Exhum, a Democrat lawmaker from Colorado Springs, told the Denver
Post.
The series of bills included:

H.B. 1224, which would bans all magazines that hold more than 15 rounds.
H.B. 1226 would prohibit those with concealed carry permits,
including off-duty police officers and former military personnel, from
bringing their weapons on college campuses.
H.B. 1228 would force residents to pay for exercising a
constitutional right by making them pay for a background check to prove
they are not criminals. There is no limit on the amount the Colorado
Bureau of Investigation could charge for the background check.
H.B. 1229 bans the private sale and transfer of firearms and
institutes universal background checks and/gun registration for all
Colorado gun owners.
In addition to the four house bills, on Monday the Senate Judiciary
Committee will also conduct hearings on two additional bills.
S.B. 195 prohibits citizens in Colorado from taking online concealed carry training courses.
S.B. 196, which bans "assault" weapons sales in the state.
With Democrats in charge of the governorship and both state houses, the measures are expected to pass.

In anticipation of the magazine ban, Magpul has announced a project
it calls the "Boulder Airlift" in its latest newsletter. The company
said the project imitates the Berlin Airlift, which flew in supplies to
West Berlin after the Soviets prevented the city from getting needed
provisions in the days following World War II.
"Similar to the Berlin Airlift, the Boulder Airlift will bring
much-needed supplies to freedom-loving residents trapped inside occupied
territory," the letter said. "While we plan to initially use FedEx or
UPS instead of aerial delivery, we figure that $5 flat rate shipping
will make up for any loss of 'style points.'"
It goes on to explain the company is permitting Colorado residents to
create a special account to purchase magazines prior to the ban.
"If the pending state legislation limiting sales and transfers of
standard capacity magazines does pass, we will not be the only ones
affected; Colorado residents' right to purchase and transfer standard
capacity magazines will be infringed in the near future," the newsletter
said. "With that in mind, we are beginning a program to help as many
residents of our home state as we can, while we still can. To meet this
need, we have set up a process for CO residents to purchase limited
quantities of magazines from our website."
The company is selling Colorado residents high-capacity magazines at
bargain basement prices. The price for a 30-round magazine for an AR-15
is $12.95 with other magazines for MAK-90 7.62 rounds selling for
$19.95. At stores, many of the same magazines are currently being sold
for upwards of $50.
The company has warned lawmakers that if the magazine ban passes, they will be forced to relocate to another state.

"If we're able to stay in Colorado and manufacture a product, but
law-abiding citizens of the state were unable to purchase the product,
customers around the state and the nation would boycott us for remaining
here," said Doug Smith, chief operating officer for Magpul Industries.
"Staying here would hurt our business."
Democrat Rep. Daniel Kagan said Magpul just doesn't understand what the law says.

"Manufacturers will be able to still sell and transfer these
high-capacity magazines to individuals in other states, the U.S.
military and law enforcement," Kagan told the Post. "We want to
stay here in Colorado. It would be sad to see them leave."
Dudley Brown, president of Rocky Mountain Gun Owners and executive
director of the National Association of Gun Rights, said Democrats will
be engaging in political suicide if they continue with their plans to
ban products produced by Magpul and strip away the rights of law-abiding
gun owners.
"Gun owners are coming out of the woodwork right now to fight the
battle," Brown said. "What they are doing to us now in the legislature,
we get to do to them in the next election, and we're not going to play
nice, either. We know how to play hardball, and we're really going to
play hardball this year."
Weld County Sheriff John Cooke said he applauds Magpul's efforts to help the state's residents.

"I think their project is great. They recognize the unfair
limitations that legislatures are putting on Colorado residents when
none of the other surrounding states have a magazine ban. Magpul being a
Colorado company, at least for now, is performing a great service. This
is a great thing for the people of Colorado."
Cooke said the magazine ban makes no sense, and he noted that his
department has never had a situation that involved criminals using
high-capacity magazines.
The sheriff has been an outspoken advocate for the Second Amendment
during his time in office. Recently he declared his office had no
intention to enforce any of Obama's executive orders on gun control.
"I'm not going to help him in any way," Cooke said. "I'm not going to
enforce it because it's unenforceable and because I don't have the
resources. The federal government doesn't have the resources."
Critics have said Cooke does not have the right to choose which laws
to enforce; however, the sheriff brushes aside the concerns, accusing
critics of having a double standard.
"Obama has refused to defend the Defense of Marriage Act. He has also
chosen not to enforce our immigration laws. I find it interesting that
these critics have no problem with that. Why should I be held to a
different standard than the president?"
Cooke noted that the company has always been known for fair prices.

"They've always been really reasonable in the prices they charge.
This program will help the law-abiding citizens of Colorado purchase a
legal product that can help them with self-defense in these last few
days before the Democrats decide to prohibit their sale."Jack Minor

A video released by Miami-Dade Transit this week shows passengers being thrown to the floor when a Metrobus and a FedEx truck collided in Miami on Jan. 24.

The video, which has no sound, contains several views of the crash at the corner of Northwest 17th Street and Seventh Avenue, captured by cameras inside the Metrobus with 25 people aboard.
Eighteen people were taken to area hospitals, none with serious injuries. Police cited the FedEx truck driver for running a red light.

Posted on Feb 22, 2010
By Chris Hedges

Dean Henderson's career with FedEx ended abruptly when a reckless driver plowed into his company truck and mangled his leg. His doctor will decide this week if it needs to be amputated.

No longer able to drive, stripped of value in our commodity culture, he was tossed aside by the company. He became human refuse. He spends most of his days, because of the swelling and the pain, with his leg raised on a recliner in the tiny apartment in Fairfax, Va., he shares with his stepsister. He struggles without an income and medical insurance, and he fears his future.

Henderson is not alone. Workers in our corporate state earn little when they work-Henderson made $18 an hour-and they are abandoned when they can no longer contribute to corporate profits. It is the ethic of the free market. It is the cost of unfettered capitalism. And it is plunging tens of millions of discarded workers into a collective misery and rage that is beginning to manifest itself in a dangerous right-wing backlash.

"This happened while I was wearing their uniform and driving one of their company vehicles," Henderson, a 40-year-old military veteran, told me. "My foot is destroyed. I have a fused ankle. I have had over a dozen surgeries. It hurts to wear a sock.

I was limping pretty badly, but in the spring of 2008 FedEx said I had to come back to work and sit in a chair. It saved them money on workers' compensation payments. I worked a call center job and answered telephones. I did that for three months. I had my ankle fused in January 2009, and then FedEx fired me. I was discarded. They washed their hands of me and none of this was my fault."

Our destitute working class is beginning to grasp that Barack Obama and other elected officials in Washington, who speak in a cloying feel-your-pain language, are liars. They are not attempting to prevent wages from sinking, unemployment from mounting, foreclosures from ripping apart communities, banks from looting the U.S. Treasury or jobs from being exported.

The gap between our stark reality and the happy illusions peddled by smarmy television news personalities and fatuous academic and financial experts, as well as oily bureaucrats and politicians, is becoming too wide to ignore. Those cast aside are reaching out to anyone, no matter how buffoonish or ignorant, who promises that the parasites and courtiers who serve the corporate state will disappear.

Right-wing rage is being fused with right-wing populism. And once this takes hold, a protofascism will sweep across our blighted landscape fueled by a mounting personal and economic despair. Take a look at Sinclair Lewis' "It Can't Happen Here." It is a good window into what awaits us.

"One thing that is very likely to happen is that the gains made in the past forty years by black and brown Americans, and by homosexuals, will be wiped out," the philosopher Richard Rorty warns in his book "Achieving Our Country." "Jocular contempt for women will come back into fashion.

The words '*****' and 'kike' will once again be heard in the workplace. All the sadism which the academic Left has tried to make unacceptable to its students will come flooding back. All the resentment which badly educated Americans feel about having their manners dictated to them by college graduates will find an outlet."

Whoever rides to power on the back of this rage will swiftly broker a deal with corporations and corporate overlords. But by then it will be too late. Dissent will become a form of treason. The security state will be quickly cemented in place. The bankrupt liberal class, which abandoned the working class and the fight for basic civil liberties, will be reviled, discredited and impotent. America will develop its own peculiar form of Christian fascism.

Obama, entranced with power and prestige, is more interested in courting the elite than saving the disenfranchised. The president, when asked to name a business executive he admires, cited Frederick Smith of FedEx, although Smith is a union-busting Republican. Smith, who was a member of Yale's secret Skull & Bones Society along with George W. Bush, served as John McCain's finance chair.

I guess Obama is hoping for some cash. And Smith has a lot of it. He founded FedEx in 1971, and the company had more than $35 billion in revenue in the fiscal year that ended in May. Smith is rich and powerful, but there is no ethical system, religious or secular, that would hold him up as a man worthy of emulation.

Those who make vast profits at the expense of workers and the common good are not moral. They are not worthy of adulation. They build fortunes and little monuments to themselves off the pain and suffering of people like Henderson. Jesus called them "vipers."

"He's an example of somebody who is thinking long term," the president said of Smith in an interview with Bloomberg BusinessWeek, adding that he "really enjoyed talking" with him at a Feb. 4 White House luncheon.

Smith does think in the long term. His company lavished money on members of Congress in 1996 so they would vote for an ad hoc change in the law banning the Teamsters Union from organizing workers at Federal Express.

A few stalwarts in the Senate, including Edward Kennedy (in a speech reprinted in the Congressional Record on Oct. 1, 1996) and his then-colleague Paul Simon, denounced the obvious. The company had bought its legislative exemption. Most members of Congress, then as now, had become corporate employees.

"I think we have to honestly ask ourselves, why is Federal Express being given preferential treatment in this body now?" Sen. Simon said at the time. "I think the honest answer is Federal Express has been very generous in their campaign contributions."

Following the Senate vote, a company spokesman was quoted as saying, "We played political hardball, and we won."

What happened to our historical memory? How did we forget that those who built our democracy and protected American workers were not men like Smith, who use power and money to further the parochial and selfish interests of the elite, but the legions of embattled strikers in the coal fields, on factory floors and in steel mills that gave us unions, decent wages and the 40-hour workweek.

How was it possible in 1947 to pass the Taft-Hartley Labor Act, which, in one deft move, emasculated the labor movement? How is it possible that it remains in force? Union workers, who at times paid with their lives, halted the country's enslavement to the rich and the greedy. And now that unions have been broken, rapacious corporations like FedEx and toadies in Congress and the White House are turning workers into serfs.

UPS is unionized. It is the largest employer of the Teamsters. Labor costs, because of the union, account for almost two-thirds of its operating expenses.

But Smith spends only a third of his costs on labor. There is something very wrong with a country that leaves a worker like Henderson sitting most of the day in a tiny apartment in excruciating pain and fighting off depression while his billionaire former boss is feted as a man of vision and invited to lunch at the White House. A country that stops taking care of its own, that loses the capacity for empathy and compassion, that crumples up human beings and throws them away when it is done with them, feeds dark ideological monsters that inevitably rise to devour the body politic.

FedEx is busy making sure Congress keeps unions out of its shops. It has lavished $17 million, double its 2008 total, on Congress to fight off an effort by UPS and the Teamsters to revoke Smith's tailor-made ban on unions. Smith, again thinking "long term," plans to continue to hire thousands of full-time employees and list them as independent contractors.

If his workers are listed as independent contractors he does not have to pay Social Security, Medicare and unemployment insurance taxes. And when they get sick or injured or old he can push them onto the street. Henderson says FedEx treats its equipment as shabbily as its employees. There's no difference between trucks and people to corporations that view everything as a commodity. Corporations exploit human beings and equipment and natural resources until exhaustion or collapse. They are cannibals.

"The trucks are a liability," Henderson said. "They are junk. The tires are bald. The engines cut out. There are a lot of mechanical problems. The roofs leak. They wobble and pull to one side or the other. The heating does not work. And the company pushes its employees in the same way. The first Christmas I was there I worked 13 hours without a break and without anything to eat. It is dangerous. I could have fallen asleep at the wheel and injured someone."

If you have to send packages do not be a scab. Send it with UPS or the U.S. Postal Service. They have unions. Every step, however tiny, we take to thwart the corporate rape of the country and protect workers counts. We would have to do more, much more, but this would be a small start. Like Smith, our politicians have sold their souls. They will not help us. We must help ourselves. And the longer we stand by and permit the Democrats and the Republicans to strip American workers of their jobs and their dignity the less we will have to say when the day of angry retribution arrives.

You may have heard the UPS is in quite the Bitch fight with FEDEX. Though both are package-delivery companies, they're governed by totally different federal labor rules. As a result, UPS's workforce is much more heavily unionized than FEDEX's-and more than twice as expensive.

And it also reveals the real villain: A government that is big enough to absolutely, positively guarantee it can screw any business. Overnight.
