On some Swiss farms, no animals are safe from the dinner table.

According to a report by the Swiss newspaper Tages Anzeiger cited by The Local, some farmers in rural parts of central and eastern Switzerland enjoy a slice of cured dog or cat meat from time to time.

"There's nothing odd about it", one farmer in the Rhine Valley said. "Meat is meat."

The most popular breed of dog for eating is a close relative of the Rottweiler, according to The Local.

The Daily Mail notes that surveyed farmers spoke about their unique eating habits on condition of anonymity, fearing the reaction from cat and dog devotes.

A PETA spokesperson told The Huffington Post they were surprised to hear that canines and felines are eaten in Switzerland, which is known for its progressive animal welfare laws.

"It's shocking to hear that this would occur in Switzerland, a country known for its progressive animal welfare laws and where a minute number of people are actually eating cats and dogs," Jane Dollinger said in an email. "Switzerland was the first country to ban cages in egg production, mandate that horses and cows have regular exercise outside in summer and winter, and require dog guardians take training courses to learn how to care for their canine companions."

But Dollinger urged meat-eaters who would look down their noses at people who eat dogs and cats to reconsider.

"When it comes to feeling pain and suffering, there is no difference between a dog or cat and a cow or chicken," Dollinger said. "PETA encourages those who are bothered by this story to try to relate to who is on their plate and consider going vegan in 2013."

7:55 p.m. EST, March 1, 2011

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A Berkeley County man is accused of manufacturing what he called "cat bombs," bottled concoctions of toilet bowl cleaner and aluminum foil, to scare stray felines away from his residence.

Brian Michael Bailey, 42, of 231 Gordon Drive, Hedgesville, W.Va., was arraigned Tuesday by Berkeley County Magistrate Harry L. Snow on one felony count of illegal possession of destructive devices, explosive material or incendiary devices, according to magistrate court records.

Bailey was charged Monday by West Virginia State Police Cpl. L.A. Faircloth after Trooper N.K. Campbell received several complaints about Bailey allegedly making some type of explosive device at his home, according to court records.

At the residence, police found three plastic bottles that had been exploded, several pieces of aluminum foil balls and some liquid inside one of the soda bottles, according to court records.

Inside the home, police discovered a bottle of The Works toilet bowl cleaner in his trash can and another bottle of the cleaner on a counter, according to court records.

In a handwritten statement, Bailey told police that he made two of the "cat bombs" Monday and several more in the past couple of days, according to court records.

Bailey indicated that he put balls of aluminum foil in the bottles, added the toilet bowl cleaner and then threw the chemical bombs that he made out the back door of his home at stray cats to scare them away with the explosion that followed, according to court records.

A "fat and aggressive" cat named Oscar was arrested by
police at the weekend for trespassing into a home in northern Swedish
home and stealing food.

A family in Pitea took action after what they first thought was a stray cat had been terrorizing the family's own felines.
They left out a cat trap for the mischievous pussy and captured him soon thereafter.
They then put a call into local police, who arrived on the scene and promptly took the cat into custody.
After taking the cat burglar down to the station, the police soon realized the offending feline was no wild outlaw.
"It is a fat, well-groomed and well-cared for cat - it's no stray cat,"
said Erik Kummu of the Norrbotten police to the Aftonbladet newspaper at
the time.
The cat nevertheless spent the night in the lock-up, with police waiting
to see if an owner would show up as the cat didn't match any of those
that had been reported missing.
The police told local papers that if no owner claimed the cat as their own, it would be put down.
On Sunday night, however, the cat-owner reclaimed the pet, which goes by
the name of Oscar, no doubt saving at least one of the cat's nine
lives.
However, the cat-owner refused to comment to the paper on his pet's alleged crimes.

The Newest Health Tax

Lots of Americans buy the argument that we should ration health care according to lifestyle. So do many employers who are trying to charge their obese employees more for health insurance. But if we are going to penalize the health care sinners amongst us, shouldn't we target all of those who raise our collective health care bill through poor lifestyle choices? This means you, cat owners.

The costs of a cat-loving America ought to be looked at in the same vein as recent calls to tax fat people. According to a Forbes magazine poll, one in three Americans believe that obese people should pay more in taxes than those who maintain a healthy weight. The same sentiments prevail among doctors in the UK. Overweight people cost the system a ton.

People seem to think it's fair to ask them to pay more if they choose to munch chips while reclining on the Lazyboy watching Paula Deen on TV. Let's apply the same logic to all lifestyle choices. Cats are costing each one of us a lot of money to treat the allergies, asthma, skin problems and hospitalizations that they cause.

According to the Humane Society of the United States, there are over 86 million owned cats in the USA. Nearly a third of you own these furry disease vectors. More than half of you cat owners have
the gall to own more than one! At a recent meeting on immune diseases in Chicago, doctors and scientists who are studying allergies made it clear that cats are a menace.

I learned that 17 percent of Americans, or 60 million of us, have allergies to cats. So that means
the odds are high that either you are allergic or someone you have over to your house could be.Once a cat is in a home it is nearly impossible to get the cat allergens out of the bedding, carpets and furniture. The cost to all of us of treating cat-induced asthma, rhinitis, skin reactions and allergies is big.

While there are no specific numbers for paying for the shots and drugs to treat the health problems due to cats, the overall medical cost for treating all allergies in the USA exceeds $7 billion. And that does not include time lost from work or days out of school due to allergies. One drug that is now frequently prescribed for kids and adults with chronic asthma due to exposure to cats, omalizumab, costs anywhere from $6,000 to $24,000 a year depending on dose.

One in 2,000 of those with cat allergies require a trip to the hospital in any given year due to an
acute adverse reaction to shots or drugs! If we apply the "fat tax" logic, the obvious ethical question is why the heck are we cat-free citizens paying for the health problems associated with tolerating cat ownership? If you choose to own a cat or refuse to get rid of one even after being told to do so by your doctor, then why should I pay for this gross irresponsibility?

So bring on the fat tax -- but tax all those who choose to make themselves, their kids and visitors sick by lifestyle choices, whether it's eating too much junk food or housing felines. And hey, employers, don't hire cat owners, or at least make them go to classes where they can learn about the true cost that kittens impose on us all. While we are at it, let's impose a fine on those who fail to wear a hat while at the beach, risking melanomas, and a skiing tax for those nutty enough to speed downhill knowing that the orthopedic clinic awaits at the bottom.

Of course, none of this applies to dogs or dog owners such as me. Those who own them should
receive a tax break. Pet ownership has a lot of benefits for your health, particularly if the pet is a dog. But cats are a very different matter. Those who insist that personal responsibility ought to drive
what everyone pays for health insurance had better let cat owners know what is best for them.

Scientists are on the hunt for a pathogen they say may be causing a mystery condition afflicting cats: they are starting to walk like robots.

Felines in Scotland and possibly northern Europe have been affected.

Walking with an odd gait with stiff, extended tails, the animals - dubbed robotic cats due to their movements - are a veterinary oddity unseen before, scientists say. Cats with a slightly different but possibly related condition have been spotted in Sweden and Austria, where it has been referred to as "staggering disease."
Veterinarians have published a report on the phenomenon, centering on 21 cats seen from 2001 to 2010 at Strathbogie Veterinary Centre, Huntly, and Morven Veterinary practice, Alford, both in northeastern Scotland. The report appeared Jan. 11 in the advance online issue of the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery.

The cats seemed to have a slowly-progressing neurological disease, and to have developed it starting at a late age, the researchers said. The illness didn't kill any of the felines, they added, but over time appeared to make their lives so miserable that some owners decided to have them put down.

Microscopic examinations initially suggested the presence of a central nervous system infection called lymphohistiocytic meningoencephalomyelitis, the researchers said. But no pathogen could be identified.

"All the cats included in our study, and most of the cats reported with 'staggering disease,' belong to the rural population accustomed to hunting birds and rodents," said one of the study's authors, Luisa De Risio. "It can be speculated that the aetiological agent may be transmitted from these animals to cats."

The cats had outdoor access and lived in the same rural area, according to the researchers. When the vets looked at immune system markers they found elevated levels of a protein called interferon-inducible Mx. That is a sign that something, whether an environmental agent or an infection, was activating the felines' immune system, they said. The authors concluded that the late onset age of the disease, its slow progression, peculiar clinical signs and the data from the tests suggest all the cats were affected by the same condition.
