Syria army Continue advances in Qusayr city

Getting to al-Qusayr city is not easy these days, roads have to be chosen wisely; one wrong turn, and you might end up in the wrong place; but as we approach what is now considered a vital intersection in Syria's geography and daily fighting, signs of battles that took place before becomes more and more evident.

After the scenes of destruction, the sounds of fierce clashes begin and a side road has to be used to avoid the clashes. A dusty and bumpy road; but not as difficult as the clashes taking place inside the city.

This is the main entrance of al-Qusayr city we are at the main square leading into al-Qusayr city we are standing here with the Syrian army as they are approaching more and more the city center

The Syrian army is securing the city street by street and stationing units as they go in, but the biggest challenge is the snipers. The insurgents sharp shooters are making running and ducking an essential life skill to survive in Al-Qusair.

However, the Syrian army has found more innovative ways to avoid the snipers, making ditches and covering them with whatever they could put their hands on.

The clashes become more and more intense as we get closer to insurgents. Here every street you cross needs fire coverage from Syrian troops and when this fails the tanks come in.

Finally we are at the schools complex, a group of adjacent school buildings that have become the new frontline in the fight over al-Qusayr.

This is the schools' complex which was one of the strongest points inside al-Qusayr as the Syrian Army is advancing, it managed to seize the building and they are advancing more right now.

Turning Point: Battle for Al-Qusayr

Source: http://syriareport.net/turning-point-battle-for-al-qusayr/ Following the securing of villages surrounding the key city of Al-Qusayr in Homs province, Syrian aircraft dropped flyers over the city on May 10th. The flyers informed civilians in the besieged town of a corridor to the North through which they were urged to evacuate pending an imminent offensive to uproot embedded militants. Observers were expecting a speedy offensive, but due to a lull in civilian evacuation, the assault was postponed on or around May 14th. Recently, reports suggest civilians who later tried to leave, were forced to stay, utilised as a human shield by divided, arguing militant factions.
Why is Al-Qusayr important?Al-Qusayr is a small city with a population of between 30,000 and 50,000 about 9 km from the northeastern border of Lebanon. It is also 22 km southwest of Homs. Due to it's proximity to Lebanon, Al-Qusayr is an attractive position for militant groups trafficking arms and personnel. Al-Qusayr is a strategic link between Damascus, the coast, and Homs, Hama and Aleppo to the north. Since March, the Syrian army has been on the offensive, securing key areas in Aleppo, Damascus countryside , Dara'a and Homs. The primary objective of these pinpoint operations is the disruption and eliminating of supply lines from neighbouring countries, a lifeline enabling militant groups to continue their attrition against Syrian army installations such as airbases. In Rif Dimashq (Damascus countryside) specifically, militant organisations intensified attempts to disrupt life in Damascus with regular mortar and rocket attacks, and occasional car bombs.

Following a stunning deployment of artillery and airpower on May 19th, Syrian forces and it's allied guerrilla detachments of the National Defence Forces (NDF) and Hezbollah stormed Al-Qusayr. Within the first day, the centre of the city was secured following the witnessing of the church having been destroyed by militants - Al-Qusayr has a significant Christian population.

According to our source, the greatest challenge for Syrian troops and it's guerrilla allies, were Chechen militants and entrenched, well trained snipers.

Underlining the logistical and strategic importance of the city, insurgents were reported to be well armed and consistently firing hundreds of rounds a minute while deploying mortars and rocket propelled grenades. During the day, 20th May, the Syrian army were reported to have control over 60% of the city. Since then, their advance has been reported as slow, but significant as the role of aircraft and armoured units became more limited, presenting infantry with the objective of fighting in a heavily built-up area.

Significantly, the Syrian command left the Northern gateway out of the city wide open. Initially, this was the corridor for civilians who were urged to evacuate in the days and weeks before the assault. Little is known about the motive for such a decision, but it is highly likely that this is in order to draw adversaries into open ground to allow for accurate targeting and eventual defeat of armed militants who will have expended supplies during their encirclement. Indeed, a split between two groups emerged following the near total encirclement of the city - those who wanted to fight to the death and those who wanted to evacuate the city in anticipation of a saturating Syrian army assault on the city.

As of today, the situation remains slow but steady. The various army brigades involved in the multi-directional assault on the city are converging in the south of the city, readying for an assault on the west. The battle is not over and what will become of the remaining adversaries in the northern corridor of the city remains to be seen.

After the Battle of Al-QusayrA map posted by Syrian Perspective 's source, which sheds light on Syrian army strategy. As noted, Al-Qusayr's surrounding areas were subject to a build-up and eventual encirclement of Syrian troops and allies. Northwest of the city, the villages of Al-Hamidiyah and Al-Haydariya were secured - completing a chain around insurgent positions and entrenchments. It is expected that militant groups will be fully encircled, sieged and eliminated in order to secure Homs governate (province) in it's entirety.

The army's strategy of securing important cities, towns and other populated centres while placing less emphasis on isolated rural positions, has paid off. It is possible that the army and it's allies will fully secure the west of the country and move west in an effort to confront Al-Qaeda and other factions which are particularly active in that region.

Take note of surrounding positions of Hama city, including Talbiseh and Rastan.

From predictions of Syrian army collapse to increasing victories on the groundReports of new counter-insurgency strategies in early 2013 appears to have paid off, with a clear increase in morale for Syrian troops. Reports from Damascus indicate an increasingly confident administration. More recently, Russia's transfer of advanced P-800 Oniks/Yakhonts anti-ship missiles underline Moscow's position on the conflict - one which is against foreign intervention.

Yakhonts anti-ship missile with a range of up to 300 km. Syria's possession of upgraded missiles will reportedly thwart plans for a naval blockade and no-fly zone

A marked re-calibration in Syrian army methodology can be traced back to the latter weeks of 2012, where reports of "opposition victories" were attributed to the overrunning and capture of insignificant, isolated Syrian army positions and installations. In fact, reports suggest that military strategists have decided against the defence of strategically unimportant outposts, in favour of an operational consolidation of manpower and equipment in order to pursue direct confrontation with militant organisations.

Consideration of the Syrian army's historically based Soviet military doctrine from the years of President Hafez al-Assad and the close relationship between the Soviet Union and recently Russia is important. Russian lessons of a costly war in Chechnya and the resulting defeat of Jihadist militants groups are key to gaining more understanding of Syrian rationale in dealing with entrenched and oftentimes elusive militant groups. Additionally, the Soviet era military hardware has had many opportunities to present it's defects as well as advantages.

The Syrian Air Force inventory includes aging but reliable Sukhoi combat jets.

The Syrian army, ill-prepared for an asymmetrical, foreign equipped and funded militant onslaught, has proved remarkably resilient. Despite crucial military hardware being of age, the reliable nature of vehicles and aircraft coupled with well trained personnel has enabled the Syrian armed forces to turn strategy into success. Indeed, the Western media narrative has performed a stunning u-turn of army having it's days numbered, having it's back broken with defections and close to collapse. Absent from the reporting of Western media outlets, often quoting alleged experts, is accurate reports of the Syrian army's doctrinal order of battle - living up to the reputation of one of the best trained and equipped army's in the region.

Worth considering also, is the army's breaking of two much reported sieges of Wadi al-Deif and Hamidiya outside Maarat al-Numan in mid-April. Airdrops to the installations were naturally discontinued, allowing greater employment of airpower to other important flashpoints.

President Hafez al-Assad's emphasis on the maintenance of a well disciplined and competent military have survived. Calibrated with Russian lessons of the Chechnya conflict and Hezbollah's combat experience, effectiveness and asymmetrical tactics, the Syrian army is living up to it's reputation as a logistically and cohesive force.

Pakistan: Calls for attacks on Christians emanate from Mosque loudspeakers

A Muslim political candidate suspected of murdering a Christian has instigated calls from mosque loudspeakers for attacks on Christians, whom he blames for his May 11 election loss.

Tensions were high in Punjab Province's Okara district after provincial assembly seat candidate Mehr Abdul Sattar, sought by police in connection with a 2008 murder, on May 13 arranged for mosque calls for violence against Christian villages.

"Burn their homes to the ground ... Punish them such that they forget Gojra and Joseph Colony," blared village mosques in the district, according to Younas Iqbal, chairman of the Anjuman-e-Mazareen Punjab, a peasant movement fighting for land rights.

Iqbal told Morning Star News by phone that that when unofficial election results were announced on May 12, Sattar's supporters ambushed a convoy of about 100 Christians on their way to congratulate his opponent on his victory.

"They destroyed two motorcycles and threw them in the canal, besides damaging a tractor," Iqbal said. "We went to the Okara Saddar Police Station to register a case, but the police officials refused to move against Mehr."

Recent religious furor has been easily stoked in Pakistan. In Lahore on March 9, about 3,000 Muslims attacked Christians in Joseph Colony, destroying 175 homes, after rumors spread of an alleged remark against Islam by a Christian. In Gojra in 2009, eight Christians were burned alive, 100 houses looted and 50 homes set ablaze after a blasphemy accusation.

Sattar has targeted Christians in several villages, designated by number-letter combinations from British colonial times, particularly village 8/4-L, for voting against him, Iqbal said. Christians largely voted for Mian Yawar Zaman, also a Muslim, for a provincial assembly seat in the general election on May 11.

Iqbal said that early on May 13, Sattar's men prevented the Christian principal of the Government Primary School, Shamoun Masih, men from entering the institution.

"They told Shamoun that since the Christians had voted against Mehr, he wouldn't be allowed inside," he said. "They also roughed him up, but there were no serious injuries. In 3/4-L village, Amjad Masih was harassed."

Iqbal added that Sattar's supporters had also forcibly occupied land of some Christians.

"The threat of violence in 8/4-L is most serious because of the tiny Christian population there," Iqbal said of the village of roughly 600 Christians. "Sensing the gravity of the situation, we immediately informed Zaman, the legislator-elect, who pressed the police to deploy personnel in the village."

Okara Police Chief Rao Jabbar told Morning Star News that officers would take all necessary measures to protect the Christian peasants.

"We have taken notice of the inciting speeches made by Mehr Abdul Sattar, and I have assured the Christians that we will initiate legal action against him," Jabbar said. "Meantime, I've directed all police officers concerned to remain vigilant and ensure that there is no damage to life and property of the Christians."

Police have been helpless in the face of Sattar, though, Iqbal said.

"Even though the district police chief has promised to protect the area's Christians, the danger will always remain there," he said. "Several cases have been registered against Mehr, but no action has been taken against him. In January this year, the police tried to arrest Mehr and his men in a murder case, but his supporters blocked three main highways for several hours, forcing the police to abandon action against him."

Police sought Sattar in connection with the murder of Javed Masih, a Christian who had opposed Sattar in a 2008 election.

"The late Javed Masih used to tell the peasants to vote according to their conscience and not get intimidated by gangsters like Mehr," Iqbal said. "His efforts bore fruit, and Mehr lost the general election in 2008. Unfortunately, Masih had to sacrifice his life for the cause, while several others were injured in an armed attack by Mehr's men."

In this month's election, Iqbal likewise told Christians to vote for the person they thought best. Zaman belongs to the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, which has emerged as the single largest party in national and Punjab assemblies.

"The humiliating defeat further stoked anger in Mehr, and he's now bent upon punishing us," he said, adding that Sattar has targeted no Muslims for opposing him.

"Our application against Mehr Abdul Sattar is still pending with the police, but it seems more Christian blood will be shed before he is brought to justice," Iqbal said. "But this will not deter us from using our right to vote. We refuse to give in to the tyranny of criminals like Mehr."

Besides village 8/4-L, the threatened Christian areas in provincial constituency PP-191 are village 10/4-L, with an estimated Christian population of 3,000; 11/4-L, where 2,000 Christians live; and 26/4-L, in which around 1,000 Christians are settled.

The peasant land movement that became the issue of contention for Sattar arose more than 10 years ago in response to what Iqbal calls the Pakistan Army's illegal occupation of 64,000 acres in some 10 districts of Punjab. Catholic Capuchins had relocated Christians to the area of central Punjab Province to provide dairy products to the British Army during World War II, and the British turned the land over to the Pakistan Army when the sub-continent was partitioned, Iqbal said.

"At the time of partition of the sub-continent, the Christians were not given the land rights which were promised to them by the Capuchin fathers," he said. "Because of this, Christians are at the forefront of the peasants' movement, which is facing the powerful Pakistan Army for their due right, as the Britons had handed over the lands to the Army after the partition."

Sattar had initially worked with the peasant cause, he said.

"But then he began creating fissures in the movement, coaxing the Muslim members not to take directions from the Christian leadership," Iqbal said. "He then left the movement and got involved in criminal activities, subsequently landing in politics. However, Mehr's political career failed to take off because thousands of Christians of the area don't vote for him."

The rise of sectarian violence and recent Israeli bombing indicate that the true aim of the Syrian civil war is to weaken Iran's position in the region, Middle East expert Tariq Ali said in an interview with RT.

Hezbollah militants are fighting beside Syrian governmental troops to retake the strategic town of Qusair from the rebels. It's considered a key weapons smuggling route for opposition forces near the Lebanese border.

The battle for the city in the contested Homs Province is viewed by both sides as a turning point which could prove crucial in deciding the conflict.

Tariq Ali believes Hezbollah has joined the fight in order to protect the weapons smuggling routes of their own, those coming from neighboring Iran.

As for the Syrian people, Ali says the majority just wants the war in the country to end, no matter which side gets the upper hand.

Fort Hood Jihadi Paid $278,000 (jizya) While Awaiting Trial

This murdering Muslim is paid over a quarter of a million dollars, while the hero cops who took him down were fired years ago.

Obama's approval ratings hovers at 50%.

America, you have lost your way.
Accused Fort Hood Shooter Paid $278,000 While Awaiting Trial NBC
Injured soldier outraged suspected shooter receives salary while his family financially struggles in recovery

The Department of Defense confirms to NBC 5 Investigates that accused Fort Hood shooter Major Nidal Hasan has been paid more than $278,000 since the Nov. 5, 2009 shooting that left 13 dead 32 injured.

The Department of Defense confirms to NBC 5 Investigates that accused Fort Hood shooter Major Nidal Hasan has now been paid more than $278,000 since the Nov. 5, 2009 shooting that left 13 dead 32 injured. The Army said under the Military Code of Justice, Hasan's salary cannot be suspended unless he is proven guilty.

If Hasan had been a civilian defense department employee, NBC 5 Investigates has learned, the Army could have suspended his pay after just seven days.

Personnel rules for most civilian government workers allow for "indefinite suspensions" in cases "when the agency has reasonable cause to believe that the employee has committed a crime for which a sentence of imprisonment may be imposed."

Meanwhile, more than three years later soldiers wounded in the mass shooting are fighting to receive the same pay and medical benefits given to those wounded in combat.

Retired Army Spc. Logan Burnett, a reservist who, in 2009, was soon to be deployed to Iraq, was shot three times when a gunman opened fire inside the Army Deployment Center.

"I honestly thought I was going to die in that building," said Burnett. "Just blood everywhere and then the thought of -- that's my blood everywhere."

Burnett nearly died. He's had more than a dozen surgeries since the shooting, and says post-traumatic stress still keeps him up at night.

Burnett is now fighting a new battle; only this one is against the U.S. Army.

The Army has not classified the wounds of the Ft. Hood victims as "combat related" and declines to label the shooting a "terrorist attack",

The "combat related" designation is an important one, for without it Burnett and other shooting victims are not given combat-related pay, they are not eligible for Purple Heart retirement or medical benefits given to other soldiers wounded either at war or during the Sept. 11, 2001 attack on the Pentagon.

As a result, Burnett, his wife Torey, and the families of other Fort Hood victims miss out on thousands of dollars of potential benefits and pay every year.

To Burnett the shooting felt like combat.

"You take three rounds and lose five good friends and watch seven other people get killed in front of you. Do you have another term that we can classify that as?" asked Burnett.

The Army has categorized the shooting as a case of "workplace violence."

"Sickens me. Absolutely sickens me. Workplace violence? I don't even know if I have the words to say," said Burnett.

"They don't need to be treated like this. They don't need to sit and fight every day for this benefit or that," said Torey Burnett.

As that fight continues, Burnett was stunned to see a letter detailing the more $278,000 Hasan has been paid since his arrest. NBC 5 Investigates received the letter from the Department of Defense in response to a request under the Freedom of Information Act.

"There have been times when my wife and I cannot afford groceries. We cannot afford gas in our car," Burnett said. "Literally, times where we ate Ramen noodles for weeks on end. This makes me sick to my stomach," said Burnett.

Burnett isn't alone in his outrage.

"We're giving the defendant in this case every benefit of the doubt. But yet we're not giving the benefits to the victims," said Rep. Thomas Rooney (R) Florida

Rooney, a former prosecutor at Fort Hood, recently signed a bi-partisan letter urging defense secretary Chuck Hagel to "...reclassify the victims' deaths and injuries as 'combat related'..."

The letter said the current situation has "...resulted in an embarrassing lack of care and treatment for the victims and their families."

"What happened here is not a case of workplace violence. What happened here was an attack on our military by a terrorist element specifically targeting our military, which just so happened to be in the United States of America," said Rooney.

Reports from the Federal Bureau of Investigation showed Hasan was communicating with a member of Al Qaida prior to the shooting. Additionally, the government's National Counterterrorism Center lists the shooting at Fort Hood as a "high fatality terrorist attack."

Rooney said he's also willing to consider whether Congress should change the rules, so the Army could suspend the pay of soldiers arrested for crimes against fellow soldiers.
