A great idea, doubt that it will ever be enforced tho......

SALEM, Ore. - Anyone droning down I-5
between Portland, Salem, Eugene or Medford with the cruise control on
knows the frustration of the dreaded Slow Driver In The Left Lane.
You either have to slow down or wait to make a less-than-legal (and
less than safe) pass using the right lane before resuming your previous
pace.
Now, an Oregon politician who admits she has become frustrated with
left lane lollygaggers - and has even been one herself - has introduced
legislation to make it illegal to poke along in the fast lane.
"If someone on the freeway passes me on the right, I feel a sense of
personal failure," State Senator Ginny Burdick said with a laugh. "Even
I, as hard as I work at it, can get careless at times" and drive too
slow in the left lane.
"It would just basically enforce common courtesy on the roads," Burdick said of Senate Bill 511 .
"If you're not passing, get over in the next lane and then you don't
even have to think about it. You're where you belong and if somebody
wants to pass you they can pass you on the left - where they should be."
So far, Burdick said reaction to the bill has been very positive.

"There's just a lot of enthusiasm around this bill," she said. "And I
  think people are ready to have more enforcement of what really is
existing law, you're not supposed to impede traffic. But that's kind of a
  vague term and this is very specific."
The law would not apply during heavy, congested traffic. Burdick
hopes to have the bill out of committee next week and up for a full vote
  soon.
Burdick said the legislation was born of "many thousands of miles of
observation - of personal observation - on this problem" while on the
road. "It would simply make it a traffic offense to drive in the left
hand lane when you're not passing."
"All you have to do is look on the freeway and you'll see somebody
tailgating, trying to get by, sometimes you'll see them flashing their
lights, you'll see them dodging in and out of traffic and those are all
signs of frustration," Burdick said.
She said the bill "would simply make it a traffic offense to drive in the left hand lane when you're not passing."

"I think I would have less gray hair if Oregon had had this a while
ago," Burdick said. "I'm on a feckless mission to train the traffic."
.

Massive Gun Ban Introduced

02.22.13
Two days after Senate Democrats claimed they would not seek a ban on modern firearms and feeding devices, Democrats in the Oregon House introduced just that.

Seven Senators joined with eight House Reps to introduce a sweeping
ban on virtually all modern firearms. Among the Senators is, of course, Ginny Burdick , who claimed on Wednesday "that
she is backing off an attempt to push through a bill on gun clips that
she drafted following the December shootings at the Clackamas Mall." The other sponsors are:
Representatives BAILEY, BUCKLEY, DEMBROW, FREDERICK, READ, REARDON,
TOMEI, Senators , DINGFELDER, HASS, MONNES- ANDERSON, MONROE, SHIELDS,
STEINER- HAYWARD.
Remember them.

HB 3200
not only bans most modern guns and magazines, it allows warrantless
searches of your home, requires background checks and registration for a
firearm you already own and as-of-yet undefined storage requirements.
We say "a firearm" because even if you comply with the restrictions in
this bill you may still only own one .
(Of course the bill does not apply to "government employees".)

The bill combines the most extreme and irrational elements of other
bills that have been introduced across the country. For example, one of
the firearms banned under this bill would be a pistol with a "folding, telescoping or thumbhole stock." No, that is not a misprint.
The principle sponsor of the bill is House Rep Mitch Greenlick , who in the past has concentrated on such worthy endeavors as banning children in bike trailers and making possession of cigarettes a crime .

The bill bans such deadly features as "pistol grips" and "barrel
shrouds" because clearly they add to the lethality of any firearm. These
people are so full of hatred for gun owners they don't even understand
what they are banning.
Never have we seen legislation that was a product of so much
ignorance and blind hatred. And don't take any comfort from the claims
that bills of this kind are not going to get a hearing. You will recall
that last session they said the same thing about a ban on licensed carry
in schools. They claimed it was dead and then revived
it in the closing days of the session without even allowing public
testimony. It was only your relentless efforts that killed it. And now
we need you again. Please use our automailer* to
send a message to the legislature to do all they can to stop HB 3200
and any bill like it. You can use the message provided or write your
own.

For the four-legged competitors, two months of hard work - and a fair few treats - ensured they were raring to get on the racetrack.So when the big day rolled around, the only ones likely to get hot under the collar were any bystanders who spotted a Mini hurtling towards them
with a dog at the wheel.

Two mutts made history yesterday by driving a car down a racetrack.
Ten-month-old beardie cross Porter put his paws to the pedals first, steering the Mini down the straight and then turning a corner.

He was followed by Monty, an 18-month-old giant schnauzer cross, who completed the same feat.

As reported last week, the pair - along with one-year-old beardie whippet cross Ginny - had been
taking driving lessons, which began with them learning to steer a wooden cart pulled along on a string by their trainers. In just eight weeks, they progressed to driving a real car - a modified Mini in which they sat on their haunches in the driver's seat. Their front paws were on the steering wheel, while their back paws were on levers attached to the accelerator and the brake.

After successfully manoeuvring the car around a lab, the leading two were challenged to a racetrack
test-drive which was broadcast live online. They were strapped in with seat belts and then followed commands from their trainers, who walked in front of the car. The dogs were all rescued by the
Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Auckland, New Zealand. The charity came up with the idea to train them to drive to prove how intelligent they were. Animal trainer Mark Vette, who schooled the dogs, said: 'They are great dogs, each with their own distinct personality.

Chink's Steak Shop - Asian Groups Fight to Change Eatery's Name

.
The Following Story has been a controversial one since 2004. Local restaurant supporters & Local Asian-American Groups have strong, differing views about the restaurant's name

Philadelphia, PA ....

Joseph Groh's popular eatery in a blue-collar neighborhood of northeast Philadelphia has been serving them up pretty much the same way since it opened in 1949. Authenticity is everything here -- the original soda fountain, the same ceiling fans, the same sparse menu and the 1950s-vintage wooden booths, now way too snug for today's expanded waistlines.

Even the sign outside bears the nickname of the restaurant's original owner, and therein lies a problem.

It's called   Chink's Steaks  .

The restaurant was opened by Samuel Sherman, who was nicknamed "Chink" as a child because of his supposedly slanted, Asian-looking eyes. "Nobody ever called him Sam," said Groh, who started working at the eatery at age 15 and later bought it after Sherman died. "That was his
name from the age of 6."

The problem is that the term "chink" is every bit as racist and hurtful to Asian Americans as "the n-word" is to African Americans -- so much so that some have taken to calling it "the c-word."

"It's definitely a derogatory term," said Ginny Gong, national president of the Organization of Chinese Americans, one of several groups pressing for the restaurant to change its name. ". . . Maybe there is this feeling that Asian Americans will not express some degree of
outrage. But we are outraged that there is this comfort level."

For Groh, 45, the name remains part of his restaurant's tradition. When his mother suggested he change it to "Joe's," he said, he told her: "Why would I? This is Chink's."

Asian American groups began lobbying Groh to change the name in 2004, after 21-year-old Susannah Park, who is Korean American, heard about the small eatery from friends. When she called to ask why it is called "Chink's," she said she was told: "Because the owner had slanty eyes."

Park, now a 25-year-old college student, grew up in Clarksburg, W.Va., the adopted daughter of white parents. "I had all kinds of experiences with that word," Park said. "Growing up in West Virginia was traumatic... Imagine being one of the only Asian American kids in a town that's
almost all white."

Park's campaign to get the name changed was unsuccessful. In fact, it elicited a backlash when neighborhood residents began a petition drive to support the restaurant. Philadelphia magazine in its "Best of Philly" edition mocked Park and called her effort "the worst complaint" of 2004.

Park said that she was young then and had no experience organizing a campaign and that despite help from the Anti-Defamation League and other groups, she eventually retreated. Groh said: "It just died down."

But when Groh wanted to open a second Chink's Steaks in South Philadelphia, Asian American groups protested to the Philadelphia River Port Authority, which owns the site. The lease was denied . Tsiwen Law, general counsel of the Greater Philadelphia OCA, said opponents of the name organized quickly to block the new restaurant, and will do so again. "We actually stopped it from expanding," he said. "Going outside of his neighborhood will be difficult, because we will
respond," he added, referring to Groh.

Law said people who use the word or who trivialize Asian American concerns "don't understand the origins of the word and its use as a racial slur." He said the slur became common in the United States in thelate 1800s, after the railroads were built and a movement was started
to expel Chinese workers from the nation.

"The word reflects that period of time, from Chinese exclusion to ultimately deportation," Law said. The term became "a very common aspect of anti-Asian violence."

And the word -- possibly a crude derivation of "Ching guo," or a subject of the Qing Dynasty -- has been used to demean other Asian Americans.

Kay Kyungsun Yu, president of the Asian American Bar Association of the Delaware Valley, grew up in Seattle and recalls driving across the country with her parents when she was in middle school. They stopped at a small-town diner, where they were harassed by a group of teenagers
using the word.

"I think that was the first time I ever heard the word," she said. "It was immediately apparent to me what it meant. We're Korean, not Chinese. We got back in the car and left."

Yu and others said that the groups learned from the failed experience, and that they recognize that part of their efforts must be to heighten sensitivity and educate non-Asians about the term and why Asian Americans find it offensive.

They are in some ways battling entrenched stereotypes. Among them is the perception that Asian Americans are, for the most part, affluent, educated and well assimilated, and should therefore have no complaints -- the "model minority."

"We have not done a good job at sensitizing the general population," Yu said. Many Americans, she said, "generally don't associate Asians as a minority facing discrimination."

Grace Kao, director of Asian American studies at the University of Pennsylvania, said part of the problem is the way race is still defined and discussed in the United States. "In this country, race is still largely a black-and-white issue. Asian Americans and Latinos are largely left out of the conversation," she said. "In public dialogue, you can't say certain things about African Americans , but it's still okay to say things about Asian Americans ."

Yu said the Asian American community is willing to pay for all the costs associated with changing the restaurant's name and for a publicity campaign around it as well.

~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~~
Taking a break between the lunch crush and the dinner crowd, Groh was reflective. He knows the name is a problem. But he has a long history with the popular business, which put his daughter through college.
Groh said he likes the name because of its tradition, and does not see the need for a change. But he acknowledges, "I don't think you could open a place today with that name."
Ex-Rep. Ginny Brown-Waite
					Former member of Congress (R-Fla.) :
					That is the Ron Paul profile: Say whatever gets votes at the time then deny and blame others. America deserves much better.
						 David Yepsen
					Director, Paul Simon Public Policy Inst., Southern Ill. Univ :
	It's hard to see these disclosures repainting this
grandfatherly-looking man into some sort of hate-filled Lester Maddox or
George Wallace. And there's also something of a "statue of limitations"
in voters allow a candidate when unsavory things come up out of the
past. They ask: Isn't this history? Is he or she doing it now? Have they
moved on? We all make mistakes, etc. That statue should protect Paul a
bit.
	Voters also discount late hits in a campaign.
	 So the damage to Paul isn't because it makes him look racist, but it
makes him look like he's still a fringe figure just at a time when his
ideas are starting to gain some mainstream traction.
						 Matthew Brooks
					Exec. Dir., Republican Jewish Coalition :
					These are Ron Paul's newsletters. They bear his name and
were the main vehicle for him communicating his views to his subscribers
and supporters. Whichever explanation you want to believe - Ron Paul
was either engaged in the substance of these publications and the
horrible, offensive screeds therein or was totally disengaged, duped and
unaware of what was being published under his name and brand. Either
way these not the qualities one would want as a president. These hateful
writings should once and for all disqualify Paul as a credible
candidate for president.
						 Jeffrey C. Stewart
					Professor of Black Studies at University of California at Santa Barbara :
Ron Paul's newsletters are a symptom not an aberration.
Ron Paul's explanations of the racist ranks in his newsletters don't
hold up because there is too much agreement between the anti-black
beliefs they contain and the core beliefs of his candidacy. Lest we
forget, the antebellum defenders of slavery utilized similar arguments
for individual freedom and a limited role for the federal government to
claim that slavery ought to be left to the states if not the individual.
Slave trading, after all, was commerce. If Paul had been president in
1861, he would not have done anything to anger the slave South. That
would have been an overreach of federal authority! Lest we forget, in
the 1950s and 1960s, southern segregationists also utilized arguments
for a limited role for the federal government in combatting Citizen
Council terrorism, unconstitutional segregation, and murderous
disfranchisement of black voters. Ron Paul may not admit to it today,
but if his view of the proper role of the federal government had been in
place during the 1950s and 1960s, Little Rock High School would never
have been desegregated. His core beliefs support the abuse of minorities
by refusing the intercession of the federal government into "private
affairs."
Christine Pelosi
					Attorney, author and Democratic activist :
					Ron Paul's newsletters reflect some Republicans' thinking
- otherwise he wouldn't have been elected then and wouldn't be surging
now.
Presidential campaigns shine a bright light on the dark underbelly of
American politics; let's use this sunlight as a disinfectant. All
Republican candidates for president including Dr Paul should renounce
Ron Paul's racist newsletter comments - and please don't forget to
renounce other Republicans' references to watermelon, fried chicken,
spook, monkey, tar baby, boy, and even assassination in reference to the
president of the United States
Rep. Fran Wendelboe
					Former member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives (R) :
					I find the newsletter situation with Ron Paul very
troubling. He allowed his name to be used, and he made substantial
financial gain from it. I believe it was his absolute duty to make sure
that the content was consistent with his principles and ideals. Just
because this "has been brought up before" and he has disavowed it, does
not make up for the unbelievable lapse in judgment he showed in giving
such latitude with his good name to someone who obviously was someone
with another agenda.
While many of us are weary of Afghanistan and Iraq, I think Ron Paul
is incredibly na"ive on foreign policy. Perhaps there is a pattern here,
obviously he was very na"ive about letting someone have full editorial
content apparently without review of something that carried his name.
The fact that this has been out there and never front and center shows
that many now see him as a credible front runner in the early states. It
is one of the advantages of the vetting that candidates go through.
Could you imagine this breaking the month before the November 2012
election if he were the Republican nominee? Won't faze his die hard
supporters but will give many pause, even those who were impressed with
receiving the kitschy (but so nice) Mrs. Ron Paul's family cookbook at
Christmas.
						 Victoria M. DeFrancesco Soto
					Visiting Scholar at the University of Texas; Director of Communications for Latino Decisions :
Rep. Ron Paul's views never hurt him in his Republican Texas district, why should they hurt him in the Iowa Republican primary?
Leslie Marshall
					Radio Talk Show Host :
					My mother told me never write down anything you don't want the world to
read. Ron Paul should've listened to my mommy. It is not whether he
wrote these or not, it is that they went out under his name. More so,
does he BELIEVE what is written there? It is convenient when one is
running for president to try to be all things to all people; but you
cannot dismiss any remarks of bigotry if you desire to represent a
nation that is comprised of people of all colors in the racial spectrum.
I'm not running for president, but nothing goes out with my name on it
that I haven't looked over. I'm not buying Ron Paul's memory lapse and
many undecided voters won't either.
						 Ilya Somin
					Professor of Law, George Mason Law School :
					Ron Paul clearly deserves substantial blame for
publishing racist and anti-Semitic material in his newsletters in the
early 1990s. Although he almost certainly did not write those articles
himself, it is difficult to believe that he was completely unaware of
their contents. Moreover, there is no disputing the fact that, in the
early 1990s, Paul was part of a small group of libertarians led by Lew
Rockwell and Murray Rothbard who sought to forge an alliance with
"paleoconservative" elements by  adopting a political strategy of appealing to white racial resentment.  Rockwell is the probable author of the racist content in Paul's newsletters.
Paul is not a racist himself. But at least for a time, he was clearly
willing to get into bed with political allies who sought to exploit
racist sentiments. In some ways, Paul's situation is similar to that of
other politicians with dubious past associations. Indeed, there are
parallels between Paul today and Barack Obama in 2008, when he was
attacked for his past relationships with anti-American and anti-Semitic
minister Jeremiah Wright and ex-terrorist and self-described communist
Bill Ayers. Paul's defense is strikingly similar to Obama's. Just as
Obama claims he didn't know about Wright and Ayers' despicable views and
doesn't agree with them, Paul claims he didn't know about the
newsletters and doesn't endorse their content. When the issue became a
public controversy, Obama distanced himself from Ayers and Wright, and
Paul has similarly denounced the newsletters.
Despite their respective efforts at damage control, it is entirely
legitimate to hold these past associations against Obama and Paul. While
they were not bigots or terrorists themselves, they clearly were
willing to ally themselves with people who are. Such errors of moral
judgment can and should be held against a candidate. But one can agree
with that while still believing that the candidate is sufficiently
superior to his opponents on other grounds to outweigh this defect. I am
not a Paul supporter myself - both because of the newsletter issue, and
  because I think he is badly misguided on some other issues.  But
I can understand why a reasonable person might reach the conclusion
that Paul's strong libertarian stance on a number of issues today
outweighs his earlier sins.
One of my concerns about Paul's candidacy is that it could end up
tarring libertarianism by association with his past misdeeds. It is
important to recognize that the Rothbard-Rockwell strategy was opposed
by most libertarian intellectuals and movement organizations when they
and Paul pursued it in the early 1990s. That includes the Cato Institute
(the most prominent libertarian think tank),  Reason  (the best-known libertarian magazine),  the Koch brothers, and many others.
Rockwell and his associates remain alienated from most other
libertarians to this day, in large part because of their willingness to
traffic in racism and homophobia. Ron Paul enjoys a better reputation in
the movement - but only because he has pursued a very different
approach for the last 15 years. Even so,  numerous libertarian commentators have denounced Paul's equivocations about the newsletters during the 2008  campaign
and this year. We have neither excused nor ignored his very real flaws.
Rothbard and Rockwell's "paleo" strategy was widely opposed in
libertarian circles long before it became a major public controversy
during Paul's most recent presidential campaigns.
Paul's relative success this year shows that the libertarian message
has considerable appeal even when the messenger is deeply flawed. It
remains to be seen how much the messenger's sins will tarnish the
libertarian cause in the long run.
California Dreamin' - Free College for Illegal Immigrants
Why did you come to the US?   To watch California taxpayers bend. ..
SACRAMENTO -  Illegal
immigrants can now apply for state-funded scholarships and aid at state
universities after Gov. Jerry Brown announced Saturday that he has
signed the second half of a legislative package focused on such
students.
AB131 by Assemblyman Gil Cedillo, D-Los
Angeles, is the second half of the California Dream Act. Brown signed
the first half of the package in July, which approved private
scholarships and   loans for students who are illegal immigrants.
Under current law, illegal immigrant
students who have graduated from a California high school and can prove
they're on the path to legalize their immigration status can pay
resident tuition rates. The bill would allow these students to apply for
state aid.
The contentious second half of the package
requires that immigrant students meet the same requirements as all other
students applying for   financial aid at state universities but specifies that they only qualify for
financial aid after all the other legal residents have applied.
"The signing of now both parts of the
California Dream Act will send a message across the country that
California is prepared to lead the country with a positive and
productive vision for how we approach challenging issues related to
immigration," Cedillo said.
The bills are different from the federal Dream Act, which includes a path to citizenship for the children of illegal immigrants.
Brown says the bill expands educational     opportunities for all qualified students.
"Going to college is a dream that promises
intellectual excitement and creative thinking," Brown said. "The Dream
Act benefits us all by giving top students a chance to improve their
lives and the lives of all of us."
Critics of the bills say it undermines
immigration laws and encourages illegal immigration by granting access
to state resources reserved for legal residents. Many Republican
lawmakers say legal students have had their grants cut in light of
recent budget cuts to higher education.
Assemblyman Tim Donnelly, R-Hesperia, said the bill's passage will the biggest mistake the Democratic Party makes.
"The polling indicates that 80 to 90 percent
of Californians are against this, and it crosses party lines," Donnelly
said. He said he hopes to get a ballot initiative overturning the law
started as soon as the bill is officially included in state statutes.
"It is absolutely, fundamentally wrong and
unfair and it is an insult to people who have worked and played by the
rules, including those who have come to this country legally," he said.
Ginny Rapini, coordinator for the NorCal Tea
Party Patriots, said there should be consequences for illegal
immigrants and giving them an education funded by California taxpayers
isn't fair to the legal residents who can't afford to pay for their own
tuition.
"What part of illegal do we not get? When
people come here illegally they need to come here with the same rules
and regulations that other people came here with," Rapini said.
Supporters argue that children whose were brought to the U.S. illegally by their parents shouldn't be punished.
The state Department of Finance estimates
that 1 percent of all Cal Grant funds, the state student financial aid
program, will be affected by the legislative package when it goes into
effect in January 2013. The department says that 2,500 students would
qualify for aid under the bill and estimates the costs to equal $14.5
million of a $1.4 billion program.
MINNEAPOLIS - A DFL-affiliated student organization may face criminal investigation and felony charges stemming from multiple confrontations with an election judge while "voter vouching" during Tuesday's election.
The Members of Students Organizing for America is to be named in a report being submitted to the Hennepin County Attorney's and Minnesota Secretary of State's Offices by Minneapolis Interim Elections Director Ginny Gelms, said the Minnesota Daily.
Gelms claims the University Lutheran Church precinct's chair election judge notified her of two incidents of individuals trying to vouch for people they did not personally know at the polls.
Vouching can be done to confirm residence for on-site registration on Election Day. If a potential voter does not possess a valid form of ID or a bill with their name and address on it, a registered voter in that precinct can sign an oath claiming they personally know that the potential voter is a resident of the precinct.
Vouching and same-day registration Guidelines are outlined in Minnesota statues and rules. Violating these rules is a felony.
Saelens was down the street from the precinct when he was made aware of the incident. He returned to the polling place and attempted to talk to the woman vouching, whom he confirmed as a volunteer for SOFA. He was told he could not speak with her. He was asked to leave by an official, as he already reached the Election Day 15-person vouching limit .He said the woman was crying as the election judge was confronting her.
Saelens was entering the church to vouch for a friend when he saw the judge and another at each other.
Minneapolis police Sgt. Bill Palmer said a church staff member called police at the request of the election judge, and two officers arrived to the polling place at 5:55 p.m. after a request to remove a trespasser interrupting the voting process. The suspect was gone when the officers arrived, and no report was filed.
When asked about the incidents, Chief Deputy County Attorney Pat Diamond could not specifically comment on the incident but said as long as there's proven intent to violate law, vouching without knowing the voter is a felony.
