More than 100 supporters of the English Defence League tonight gathered near the scene of where a man was allegedly hacked to death by extremists and threw bottles at police.

Officers formed a cordon and the men left the immediate area after the brief incident. Some of the EDL supporters gathered at The Queen's Arms pub locally, where they sang nationalistic songs.

One local Muslim said that a brick had been thrown through a local mosque during the march. Giving his name only as Abdul, he said: 'One of my friends told me they put a brick through the mosque.

'I'm not happy about it. That's the local mosque. It's a place of worship - a place of God. They have got Islam all wrong. The people who did this are nothing to do with the real Islam.'

Elsewhere, two men were arrested after separate attacks on mosques following today's killing.

A 43-year-old man was in custody on suspicion of attempted arson after reportedly walking into a mosque with a knife in Braintree, Essex.

Local MP Brooks Newmark tweeted tonight: 'Local mosque in Braintree attacked by man with knives and incendiary device. Man arrested. No one injured.'

Mr Newmark added: 'Just met with leaders of local mosque in Braintree which was attacked this evening. Thanked local police for their swift response.'

Essex Police confirmed a 43-year-old from Braintree had been arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon and attempted arson after the incident on Silks Way at 7:15pm.

Meanwhile police in Kent were called to reports of criminal damage at a mosque in Gillingham at 8.40pm. A man was taken in custody on suspicion of racially-aggravated criminal damage.

The EDL men had first gathered at Woolwich Arsenal station in Woolwich, south-east London. Riot police with shields stood guard outside for a short time, before moving back into their vans.

The EDL group waved a flag of St George and chanted 'no surrender to the Muslim scum'. Around 20 of the men wore black balaclavas with an EDL logo on the front.

Leader Tommy Robinson addressed the crowd, saying: 'We have got weak leadership. They have allowed this to happen. People are scared to say the word Muslim. They are scared to offend them.

'You know what? We are offended. People in this country are angry. They have had enough.'

Tommy Robinson, EDL spokesman

The crowd, chanting 'Rule Britannia' and 'EDL', as well as 'England', marched to the cordon where the killing took place. Others chanted 'No surrender to Al Qaeda'.

A statement by the EDL said: 'The terrible events in Woolwich today were a reminder of something very few are willing to accept. We are at war.'

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said he was not aware of any arrests following the protest tonight. The march had been dispersed by 11pm.

Master Israeli spy and traitor Jonathan Pollard should serve out his prison sentence

By Glenn Garvin

Miami Herald

In his book "The Joys of
Yiddish," Leo Rosten, struggling to define the concept of "chutzpah" to
Americans, toyed with a bunch of English expressions: "gall, brazen
nerve, effrontery, incredible 'guts,' presumption plus arrogance." In
the end, he concluded no single word sufficed. Chutzpah, he wrote was
"that quality enshrined in a man who, having killed his mother and
father, throws himself on the mercy of the court because he is an
orphan."If Rosten were around today, he might offer another
definition: a country that sends a spy to steal millions of pages of
national-security secrets from its best friend in the world and then
demands his release as a sign of friendship. That's exactly what
happened last month when President Obama visited Israel, only to be
berated over the imprisonment of Tel Aviv's self-described "master spy,"
Jonathan Pollard.Pollard has been in jail since 1985, when he
was arrested for using his job as a U.S. Navy intelligence analyst to
plunder enough classified documents to fill a 6-foot-by-10-foot room,
which he sold to Israel for hundreds of thousands of dollars. Sentenced
to life in prison, he's scheduled for parole in November 2015, after
completing 30 years of his term.Pressure on Obama

Both
Israeli president Shimon Peres and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are
believed to have demanded Pollard's release in private meetings with
Obama. Members of the Knesset were so open about their intentions to
rough Obama up on the subject of Pollard that the president declined an
offer to speak there.Deprived of a chance to shout at Obama face
to face, Knesset member Danny Danon instead took to the pages of USA
Today, where his op-ed piece called Pollard's jailing "an historic
wrong" and added: "If President Obama plans on asking the Israeli people
to trust him during what promises to be a tumultuous four years,
bringing Jonathan home would be a just and noble way to do so."Putting
aside the fact that a lot of Americans might reasonably expect they've
already earned some trust by giving Israel $3 billion a year (nearly
half the U.S. budget for foreign military aid), the clamor for Pollard's
release begs the question: Why are the Israelis insisting that the
future of relations with the United States rests on the immediate
release of a convicted spy who is just 19 months from possible parole?
 The
answer is that Israeli officials don't want Pollard released because
he's served his time. They want him released because they think he
didn't do anything wrong and they want Washington to publicly admit it.
And they think this is an opportune moment to press their demand because
Obama is politically weak and might hope to score points with a
wavering constituency, American Jews. But releasing Pollard would
be a giant mistake for the president. Pollard is neither a naive kid who
blundered into trouble for unthinkingly passing a harmless secret or
two to an ally, nor an innocent Jewish victim persecuted by an insidious
network of anti-Semites within the U.S. government. He is, rather, a
mercenary who looted U.S. national security for personal gain.Israel
was the biggest beneficiary of Pollard's perfidy. He stole so many
documents - delivering up to five suitcases-full at a time to his
control officer - that the Israelis had to buy a condo and equip it with
a high-speed copying machine just to handle the take. The Israelis in
return paid him $2,500 a month (well over his U.S. government take-home
pay), lavished him with jewelry and European vacations, and set up a
Swiss bank account to hold a $300,000 bonus. And still Pollard
wanted more. He tried to sell American secrets to Pakistan, Australia
and South Africa's apartheid regime. He stole classified documents on
China to help his wife land a big public-relations contract with China.Profitable proposition

If
spying was quite profitable for Pollard, it was no bargain for American
taxpayers. It cost many millions of dollars to replace the intelligence
systems he compromised, including a blueprint for U.S. electronic
interceptions around the world. Pollard's disclosures enabled Israeli
missions that the United States would never have agreed to support, like
a 1985 bombing raid on a PLO headquarters in Tunisia that killed scores
of innocent bystanders. And much of the material Pollard stole
(including information on how the United States tracked Soviet
submarines) wound up in Moscow - perhaps because the KGB pilfered it
from Israel, perhaps because the Israelis swapped it for Jewish
emigrants from Russia. It is inconceivable that any American
president would stamp these actions with approval by granting early
release to the man who carried them out. And for President Obama, whose
attorney general has prosecuted more government officials for leaks
under the 1917 Espionage Act than all his predecessors combined, it
would be an act of unfathomable hypocrisy. If it's OK for Pollard
to dump documents to Israel, why isn't it OK for Bradley Manning to do
the same to Wikileaks? Because the Knesset says so?Glenn Garvin is a columnist for the Miami Herald.

Why Al Quseir, Hezbollah And Whats Really Behind It

I found this article very interesting and just wanted to share. It help me a little bit to understand why some big powers would go so far and openly (almost) support terrorism to achieve their geopolitical goals.
Text was Google-translated
Al-Quseir lies on the road between Damascus and the Mediterranean coast.

For the rebels control over al-Quseir is necessary because it serves as a link to the mountainous terrain
in the north of Lebanon, where mercenaries are being moved deep into Syria. Elimination of this base will allow the government army commanders to consider the problem for the release of
militants from the northwestern province of Idlib and Aleppo.

The Israeli press reported that the attention of all the regional intelligence focused on the area between
Baalbek and the Syrian border. This is the "heart and lungs war machine Lebanese Shiite organization,"
"Hezbollah".

Worries Israelis are not just noticeable - it is accented! What does this mean?
Syrian resource
"Al-Haqiqa>> story on the value of the fight for al-Quseir, which brings on
the side of the Syrian army and soldiers of "Hezbollah".

Al-Haqiqa>> based on the information the British diplomat who until recently worked in Damascus until
the closure of its embassy there.

Al-Quseir is a unique case - the head of "Hezbollah", Sheikh Nasrallah, openly acknowledged the
participation of its people in this battle for the Syrian city. According to him, it is about
"limited" involvement in order to protect residents in the vicinity of minorities, especially Shiites, whose land and property in the last few months have been confiscated by Sunni Islamist insurgents "Dzhabhat
en-Nusra" and "al-Faruq Brigades."

But is this the real reason for intervention, "Hezbollah"?
And he said the following:
"Here, on this small area concentrated all the regional and international dimensions of the Syrian conflict.
On the surface,
"Hezbollah" is trying to protect the Shiites. But in reality, there is a real World War IIL, there face to face great powers - not metaphorically, but really.

Sometimes their representatives are invisible, like ghosts, influencing events through satellites and drones, but sometimes they suddenly make themselves known.

For example, in the course of the battle for Baba Amr (village near the city of Homs - SF) stepped in
Russian, giving the regime satellite imagery areas. At the same time, dozens of technical intelligence agents of the French and British special forces led by rebel forces in Homs - the same Baba Amr.

It is through this region in the first year of the war in Syria, especially in the central region, and 60%
of thrown weapons and fighters for the insurgency from abroad.

According to the assessment of Israeli and Western intelligence, this region - the most dangerous and most strategically important in the Middle East - in a confrontation axis of Iran-Syria-Israel axis against Saudi Arabia.

At the disposal of Israel and the U.S. were some of the reports. They estimate that up to 80% of heavy weapons passed the Syrians "Hezbollah", in particular, rockets, walked along the corridor. "In other words - this area is a very sensitive point, which allows control of their transfer along this corridor anything - from fighters to missiles.

Therefore, according to the British diplomat, the attention of all the regional intelligence focused on the
region between the Lebanese and Syrian border Baalbek. It was here that are warehouses and bases "Hezbollah".

Now all is clear, writes the "Al-Haqiqa>>, that the Sunni insurgents and the southern border with Syria, Jordan, and on the demarcation of the ceasefire line work closely with Israeli intelligence . What
for? She conducts them in terms of grazing with the Shia "Hezbollah." This is evidenced by the statement of one of the commanders of "Free Syrian Army" Khalid al-Habous. When he was last year proclaimed the "Battle of Liberation", the aim of which was to prevent the supply of arms Syria, "Hezbollah".

And that's why now "Hezbollah" without any hesitation was ready to take part in cleaning
it from hostile armed groups and the province itself and Homs, in particular, the areas adjacent to the Lebanese border.
But it is - "atruth" by a British citizen.
On the other hand, it looks different: it is about al-Quseir, as a strategic point linking the Syrian authorities with their union, "Hezbollah".

Control, which at one time set militants jihadists in the region, meant separation from Damascus, the
Lebanese territory in the area of

Which Is More Corrupt: Afghanistan or America?

By Michael Hirsh
National JournalKABUL, Afghanistan - None of President Hamid Karzai's top advisers knew that he had been receiving tens of millions of dollars in secret cash from the CIA, Afghanistan's senior anticorruption official said, and he added that he did not believe the Afghan leader's claim that he had been giving the agency regular receipts for the money.

Mohammad Yasin Osmani, the head of the Independent Joint Anti-Corruption Monitoring and Evaluation Committee, said in an interview last week that he and 39 other advisers who audit expenditures throughout the government "were not aware" of the decade-old payouts, which Karzai acknowledged at a news conference in Kabul on May 4.

But Osmani, like other Afghan government officials, was reluctant to criticize Karzai or accuse him of personal corruption, highlighting a growing friction between Afghanistan and the International Security Assistance Force led by the United States over an issue that threatens to upend the rebuilding effort here, and possibly U.S. plans for a post-2014 "strategic partnership" with Afghanistan. Many Afghan officials and politicians contend that their nation's reputation for rampant corruption is exaggerated-according to Transparency International, a monitoring group, Afghanistan is the most corrupt nation on earth, along with Myanmar, North Korea, and Somalia. They say that more to blame are poor procedures by ISAF and Washington that hand aid money directly over to graft-plagued contractors and subcontractors.

Ashraf Ghani, a former finance minister who is currently the chairman of the Afghan Transition Coordination Commission, said the Karzai cash controversy is viewed in Washington as simply more evidence of Afghanistan's corrupt ways. But he asked: "What does it say about the way the American government conducts itself?"

It is, perhaps, a fair point, especially coming after a decade in which the $60 billion American rebuilding effort in Iraq was deemed hopelessly corrupt-in part because, Special Inspector General for Iraq Reconstruction Stuart Bowen concluded in his final report in March, in many cases U.S. officials did not consult with Iraqis closely or deeply enough to determine what reconstruction projects were really needed. Now the Afghans are saying the same thing. Even as the security transition to the Afghan National Security Forces is said to be going more smoothly, civilian transition from U.S. to Afghan oversight is a disaster, Finance Minister Omar Zakhilwal said in an interview. "The transition has not happened," he said, although as the ISAF-formed "provincial reconstruction teams" are being dismantled.

U.S. aid rules have themselves become a source of corruption, Osmani says. Too many private contractors skim off the top as they subcontract a job out, a practice that the Afghan government itself would not permit, he says. Beyond that, "nobody has the right to monitor international community projects," and yet international auditors are often too leery of going to insecure areas. So little monitoring occurs. And in some cases U.S.-built projects appear to be following the pattern in Iraq. Osmani cited a case in which the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction, John Sopko, criticized a $73 million contract given by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to DynCorp International for a shoddily built Afghan National Army base in Kunduz Province. "They didn't allow the government to go out and supervise the project!" Osmani said.

The finger-pointing on both sides suggests a long-married couple-10 years of geopolitical marriage in this case-who are fed up with each other but can't bear the idea of divorce. And the mood is getting testier. In a recent report, Sopko accused the Afghan government of "targeting American contractors with unjust taxes and intimidation." Zakhilwal says the allegations are false. Even in the case of Afghanistan's biggest economic weakness, the heroin trade, Afghan officials say the corruption is far greater outside Afghanistan than inside. "From 2002 to 2009, $420 billion to $460 billion was made by international dealers , while $18 billion made by the Afghan mafia," says Ghani, citing a report by the U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime. "The illegal economy is totally integrated into globalization: with credit and transport."

The question of whether Afghanistan is just too corrupt to save has shaped the entire U.S. approach to post-9/11 Afghanistan, tilting the Obama administration gradually away from "nation-building" and toward a more pared-down counterterrorism strategy. In February 2008, three U.S. senators who are today the Obama administration's key foreign-policy heavyweights-Joe Biden, Chuck Hagel, and John Kerry-had a crucial dinner with Karzai at the Afghan president's palace. After Hagel raised the subject of corruption in Karzai's government, including runaway graft and narcotics connections, Karzai replied, "My dear senator, there is no corruption in my government." Things then got testier. The American visitors insisted they had a list of corrupt officials and that Karzai's brother was at the top of it, but the Afghan leader disingenuously denied it all-until Biden, by the dessert course, threw down his napkin. "This dinner is over," he said, walking out. Hagel and Kerry followed.

Biden never really regained his trust in Karzai, and by 2009, after he became Barack Obama's vice president, he turned into the new administration's No. 1 skeptic about nation-building. The doubts about Karzai, culminating in charges of election fraud, also poisoned the Afghan president's relations with the late Richard Holbrooke, Obama's special representative for Afghanistan. Karzai continues to deny charges of personal corruption, including about the CIA money. "This money was not given to warlords," he said at the May 4 news conference in Kabul. "The major part of this money was spent on government employees such as our guards.... It has been paid to individuals, not movements.... We give receipts for all these expenditures to the U.S. government."

Even Osmani is skeptical about that last point. Asked whether he believed there were "receipts," he responded, "No." But there are clearly two sides to every corruption story, and the U.S. and Afghan governments need to get their stories straight if the "partnership" is to survive after 2014.

'If my son was a dog, I'd have him put down': Mother whose son suffers from ADHD says she is fed up of her daily, violent battles with him

A mother has described the torment of having a son with severe ADHD, admitting that if he were an animal, she would have him put down.

Jenny Young has four children aged 25, 23, 19 and 10 and astonishingly, not only have they all been diagnosed with the behavioural disorder, but she too was told she had it in her mid-forties.

But it is her youngest child Ryan, 10, who suffers with the most extreme symptoms of the condition as well as severe learning disabilities, subjecting Jenny to daily violent attacks.

She said that because she is his mother, and not a pet owner, she must put up with it.

Jenny explained that she is the main target of his frustration and that if Ryan, who has the mental age of a two-year-old, were her husband they would have divorced by now.

She added that people should not judge her for her comments until they have heard her story.

Jenny said that she used the example of putting a dog down because she has a member of the family who went through the traumatic experience of having their dog euthanised after they could not control its violence.

'It was a horrendous traumatic experience for the whole family. They worked really, really, hard and did everything they could possibly do for .

'They spent lots of money and put lots of effort in and ultimately they had the choice to have her put down.

'I don't liken Ryan and the dog exactly but there is a choice. When you have a dog that behaves and might attack you any minute, you have a choice.

'I wouldn't be without Ryan but that when you're the mother of a child like Ryan there is no choice. There isn't a refuge for battered mums - you have to get on with it.

Jenny made the startlingly frank comments on ITV's This Morning.

Her oldest son was diagnosed with ADHD when he was ten. Before then people excused his behaviour as 'just being a boy'.

Jenny said: 'It was a relief because he wasn't just being naughty.'

She then went on to recognise the same traits in her other children.

Jenny added that her late diagnosis of ADHD has helped her to relate to her children and ultimately to cope with her situation.

She said: 'If you've got an ADHD mind it's difficult to understand those who don't have an ADHD mind.'

But at times she says it has been very difficult to cope, especially when all four children were little.

Her first marriage broke down in the mid-Nineties but in 2002 she remarried.

Jenny, who had always wanted to be a mother, said she hadn't expected to have any more children.

She added that she knew that Ryan would have problems from very early on: 'You could tell from the scans that there would be something wrong, but we didn't know what. He was developing very slowly and was tiny.'

Ryan was delivered by Caesarean section at 38 weeks and weighed just 3lb 11oz when he was born. From then on he developed very slowly, both physically and mentally.

Due to the strain that Ryan's problems put on her marital relationship, Jenny's second marriage broke down in 2008 and the couple divorced.

Jenny said that she grieved for Ryan when he was diagnosed with ADHD and severe learning difficulties.

'You don't love your child any less but it's a bit like going on holiday and not arriving in the place you expected. It's a lovely place, but not what you expected.'

Jenny went on to explain that 99 per cent of the time Ryan is adorable but that for that one per cent of the time he is violent and unpredictable.

'And I think most parents would say same thing. There are two sides to him. The biggest problem is the unpredictability.

He can be gorgeous all day and then I can squat down to give him a cuddle and he might bite me or scratch me or knock my glasses off or scratch me or punch me.

'At least every day I get punched in the face.'

Jenny said that sounds tend to trigger Ryan's violent outbursts, with modem hand dryers being a main culprit. as well as simply changing activities causing him to become upset.

'Simply changing routine can cause him to become upset but sometimes it can be nothing,' she added.

Jenny, who once worked part-time in an office, but has since dedicated herself to working as Ryan's full-time carer, says she thinks about the future and says that Ryan's behaviour could go either way.

'Maybe he will learn to express himself better and maybe it will all get better. The worst fear is that he won't get better and he will be same size as me and do even more damage.'

Jenny went on to describe the lack of help provided for parents of children with ADHD and learning difficulties.

'Unfortunately professionals don't always believe you and it can be very difficult to get the level of support needed.

'When you're a mum and you tell them you've tried everything and you're at your wit's end, specialists tend to keep offering other things rather than giving level of support needed.'

'There is help but you have to fight for it and shout loud and even be seen crying.

'Schools and social workers can help but no one will come along and say to you "You look like you're having a difficult time - do you need some help?"'

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a group of behavioural symptoms that include inattentiveness, hyperactivity and impulsiveness.'I want to get more help so we don't reach crisis point. More training, more respite and a residential placement later on. And I don't just want this for me. I am not alone. I know so many other mums who are at their wit's end. Luckily we have each other.'

ADHD can occur in people of any intellectual ability but many people with ADHD also have learning difficulties. They may also have additional problems such as sleep disorders.

Symptoms of ADHD tend to be first noticed at an early age, and may become more noticeable as a child grows up.

It is the most common behavioural disorder in the UK. It is estimated the condition affects 2-5% of school-aged children and young people.

ADHD can be a lifelong condition, and many children continue to have symptoms as a teenager and adult.

Young children are naturally active and easily distracted. However, if these features are excessive for a child's age and general developmental level, and affecting their daily life, they may indicate ADHD.

ADHD is normally diagnosed between the ages of three to seven, although in some cases it may not be until much later. It is more commonly diagnosed in boys.

The exact cause of ADHD is not known, although research shows that it tends to run in families. Studies have also shown that there may be differences in the way the brain works in people with ADHD.

There is no cure for ADHD, but it can be managed with appropriate educational support, advice and support for parents and the individual, and medication if necessary.

Living with a child with ADHD can be challenging but it is important to remember that they cannot help their behaviour.

Tel Aviv: Woman carjacked under threat of bloody needle by a Palestinian drug addict

"Suddenly a large man entered the backseat of my car , slammed the car door shut and said: 'Shut up and drive.'" Miri Lehmann was attacked and carjacked by a West Bank resident who had jumped into her car and threatened her with a needle.

Lehmann eventually managed to escape and the attacker took the wheel. He began driving the car out of the city until an ensuing police chase, which included a police helicopter, successfully halted him in the Yavne area. "I had no idea he had a needle and stone; I just jumped out of the car," Lehmann posted on Facebook.

The incident took place Thursday at 8 am, while Lehmann was driving to work in south Tel Aviv. When she stopped at a traffic light on Har Zion Boulevard, a man jumped into the backseat of her car.

"The backseat door suddenly opened," she recounted on Sunday to Ynet, "and a big man, holding something in his hand, told me to shut up and continue driving. I began screaming, telling him to get out, but he shut the door and sat down.
"I understood that he wasn't going anywhere, so instinctively I unfastened my seatbelt and jumped out of the car."

The car then began to roll down the street, hitting the car in front of it. Lehmann ran for her life as her assailant jumped to the driver's seat.

"He began driving in reverse very quickly onto the boulevard itself. He almost ran me over. Afterwards he began driving like a madman in the wrong direction and escaped."

In a Facebook post she published immediately after the event, Lehmann described the instances following the traumatic experience: "I found myself walking down the street shaking and crying between rows of cars who had witnessed the event.

"I tried getting into two different cars, but the guys driving them wouldn't let me in. Eventually, a lovely couple let me into their car and they already had the police on the line. They waited with me until the police arrived and I gave them my statement," she wrote.

According to Lehmann, only at the time she was giving the police her statement did she come to grips with the fact that she had experienced an armed robbery.
Her personal belongings had remained in the car, which was later found, together with the perpetrator, at the end of a joint police chase conducted with the help of a helicopter by the Tel Aviv and Central District police.

According to a police statement, eyewitnesses said the man was holding a needle. After his arrest, the police said that a needle and a very large stone were found in the car. The man's remand has been extended until Tuesday.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2328187/Richard-Christie-beat-ex-soldier-Bill-Hopkins-badly-died-caught-victim-ripped-glove-hand-attack-giving-police-DNA-match.html

Granddaughter helps trap mugger who beat ex-soldier, 78, so badly he almost died by finding attacker's glove to provide police with DNA

:Bill Hopkins, 79, suffered broken jaw during attack in Digbeth, Birmingham
:Richard Christie, 48, punched and kicked him in the head before fleeing
:Police traced him after Mr Hopkins managed to tear away his glove
:Jailed for nine years at Birmingham Crown Court yesterday

A granddaughter helped catch a mugger who beat a former soldier so viciously he almost died by finding the attacker's glove which was torn off in the attack.

Bill Hopkins, 79, suffered a broken jaw and was treated in hospital for two days following the unprovoked attack outside his home in Digbeth, Birmingham, last November.

His granddaughter Alana Kurila, 24, found the mugger's glove in his front garden and police were able to extract the attacker's DNA from it. Bill joked: 'She likes to be called Miss Marple now.'

Mugger Richard Christie, 48, was today jailed for nine years following the horrific attack

He pounced on the pensioner from behind, repeatedly punching and kicking him in the head before fleeing with his wallet containing just lb40 and a memorial card from Mr Hopkins' late wife's funeral.

Christie, from Sugden Grove, Highgate, admitted robbery at Birmingham Crown Court yesterday.

Ex-serviceman Mr Hopkins, who served in Borneo in the 1950s, woke up bleeding on the pavement following the attack just yards from his home on Gooch Street.

The great-grandfather was left particularly distraught because his injuries forced him to miss a Remembrance Day parade for the first time since serving overseas.

Detective Constable Lee Dawson, from West Midlands Police, described the mugging as a 'vicious, unprovoked attack.'

He added: 'The whole community were understandably outraged at the severity of the attack.

'We hope the sentence offers reassurance that we will do everything within our power to bring criminals to justice.'

Speaking after the court hearing, Bill said: 'I'm glad justice has been served and Christie is behind bars.

'Thankfully I've recovered from what he did to me. It hasn't put me off going outside or anything.

'I'm just glad he is in prison and cannot hurt anybody else. Both my family and I are pleased with the sentence.

'We also can't thank the police enough. They did a fantastic job catching Christie.'

Speaking shortly after the attack, Mr Hopkins' daughter Pat Kurila had broken down during a police press conference saying she feared her father might die such was the severity of his beating.

The 52-year-old teaching assistant, from Highgate, Birmingham, said: 'We could have been burying him. Whoever did this is the lowest of the low.'

Initially police believed the mugger had followed Mr Hopkins' home from a Ladbrokes in the Arcadian Centre, where he had won the lb40.

He was pinned down and attacked outside his house at around 8pm and later spent two days in hospital.

Mr Hopkins, who did his National Service in Germany and Malaya with the 11th Hussars, had said after the attack: 'The thing that most annoyed me was that I couldn't go to the remembrance parade on the Sunday as I do every year.'

Ex-soldier told to paint over 'offensive' St George's flag on front door

A PATRIOTIC ex-soldier who painted a St George's flag on his front door has been ordered to cover it up by his housing association landlords who claim it could be considered "offensive" and may bring "distress" to neighbours.Steven Rolfe, 52, painted the red and white colours of the English flag on his rented home in Preston, Lancs, 10 years ago and added hanging baskets to celebrate his love of England and mark his former career in the forces.

But despite being runner up in a council "best kept house" competition, he has now received a letter from an official at property management firm Places for People saying neighbours could be "alarmed" by the symbol.

The letter also warned the design could place him in a category of "nuisance neighbours" and said it could see him being evicted if he failed to cover it up.

In a letter to Mr Rolfe, Neighbourhood Officer Leanne Hardy gave him 14 days to repaint the door saying: "It has been brought to my attention that you have painted your front door in a way that could be considered offensive."

When he asked for permission to keep the flag, Ms Hardy sent another letter refusing his request and giving him seven days to paint over it in one colour.

She also warned him that failure could see him being in breach of his tenancy agreement.

In her letter Ms Hardy said the flag design fell foul of rules tackling unruly tenants who caused "a nuisance, annoyance, disturbance or harassment" of others.

Ms Hardy also said his conduct breached tenancy conditions concerning those tenants who were "injurious to the interests of neighbours" and those who "cause distress, alarm or interfere with the peace and comfort of any other person."

Mr Rolfe, who served in Northern Ireland, said: "I couldn't believe it when I got the letter.

"We seem to be losing our values in this country and also losing our sense of identity, all in the name of political correctness."

The father-of-one said he had never had any problems before and none of his neighbours have ever complained.

He added: "I am far from being racist, I'm just proud of England that's all.

"My neighbours say they would like to see more of the St George's flag about."

Mr Rolfe has been supported by Muslim community leader Ali Anwar who said: "As far as I'm concerned, a man's home is his castle, and he should be allowed to express himself as he wishes. This is political correctness gone mad."

Former Labour MP David Borrow, who is now a local councillor, said: "The door has been like that a long time and having spoken to the gentleman, I have no reason to believe that he is anything other than a decent member of the community.

"I do not believe that he has intended the door to symbolise anything offensive, and I have heard no specific complaints."

John Clemence, vice president of the Royal Society of St George, said: "To say that the cross of St George can cause offence needs to be challenged.

"We are seeing more and more of this kind of complaint, and these jobsworths are causing resentment and inciting racial hatred."

Places for People, which owns the house and runs 143,000 homes across Britain, has since apologised for calling the flag "offensive" but said Mr Rolfe must still repaint the door because he does not have the proper permission.

The Department of Defense confirms to NBC 5 Investigates that accused Fort Hood shooter Major Nidal Hasan has now been paid more than $278,000 since the Nov. 5, 2009 shooting that left 13 dead 32 injured. The Army said under the Military Code of Justice, Hasan's salary cannot be suspended unless he is proven guilty.

If Hasan had been a civilian defense department employee, NBC 5 Investigates has learned, the Army could have suspended his pay after just seven days.

Personnel rules for most civilian government workers allow for "indefinite suspensions" in cases "when the agency has reasonable cause to believe that the employee has committed a crime for which a sentence of imprisonment may be imposed."

Meanwhile, more than three years later soldiers wounded in the mass shooting are fighting to receive the same pay and medical benefits given to those wounded in combat.

Retired Army Spc. Logan Burnett, a reservist who, in 2009, was soon to be deployed to Iraq, was shot three times when a gunman opened fire inside the Army Deployment Center.

"I honestly thought I was going to die in that building," said Burnett. "Just blood everywhere and then the thought of -- that's my blood everywhere."

Burnett nearly died. He's had more than a dozen surgeries since the shooting, and says post-traumatic stress still keeps him up at night.

Burnett is now fighting a new battle; only this one is against the U.S. Army.

The Army has not classified the wounds of the Ft. Hood victims as "combat related" and declines to label the shooting a "terrorist attack",

The "combat related" designation is an important one, for without it Burnett and other shooting victims are not given combat-related pay, they are not eligible for Purple Heart retirement or medical benefits given to other soldiers wounded either at war or during the Sept. 11, 2001 attack on the Pentagon.

As a result, Burnett, his wife Torey, and the families of other Fort Hood victims miss out on thousands of dollars of potential benefits and pay every year.

To Burnett the shooting felt like combat.

"You take three rounds and lose five good friends and watch seven other people get killed in front of you. Do you have another term that we can classify that as?" asked Burnett.

The Army has categorized the shooting as a case of "workplace violence."

"Sickens me. Absolutely sickens me. Workplace violence? I don't even know if I have the words to say," said Burnett.

"They don't need to be treated like this. They don't need to sit and fight every day for this benefit or that," said Torey Burnett.

As that fight continues, Burnett was stunned to see a letter detailing the more $278,000 Hasan has been paid since his arrest. NBC 5 Investigates received the letter from the Department of Defense in response to a request under the Freedom of Information Act.

"There have been times when my wife and I cannot afford groceries. We cannot afford gas in our car," Burnett said. "Literally, times where we ate Ramen noodles for weeks on end. This makes me sick to my stomach," said Burnett.

Burnett isn't alone in his outrage.

"We're giving the defendant in this case every benefit of the doubt. But yet we're not giving the benefits to the victims," said Rep. Thomas Rooney (R) Florida

Rooney, a former prosecutor at Fort Hood, recently signed a bi-partisan letter urging defense secretary Chuck Hagel to "...reclassify the victims' deaths and injuries as 'combat related'..."

The letter said the current situation has "...resulted in an embarrassing lack of care and treatment for the victims and their families."

"What happened here is not a case of workplace violence. What happened here was an attack on our military by a terrorist element specifically targeting our military, which just so happened to be in the United States of America," said Rooney.

Reports from the Federal Bureau of Investigation showed Hasan was communicating with a member of Al Qaida prior to the shooting. Additionally, the government's National Counterterrorism Center lists the shooting at Fort Hood as a "high fatality terrorist attack."

Rooney said he's also willing to consider whether Congress should change the rules, so the Army could suspend the pay of soldiers arrested for crimes against fellow soldiers.
