During a ceremony, May 21, 2013, at the home of Kenichiro Sasae, the Japanese ambassador to the United States, Terry Shima was awarded the "Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette" award. The award comes from both the prime minister and emperor of Japan. Shima is a "Nisei," or second-generation Japanese-American. During World War II, he joined the 442nd Infantry Regiment in 1945 in Italy, where he was assigned to public relations. When the unit returned in July 1946, he continued to handle public relations for the veterans association in New York, in Washington, D.C., and in Honolulu. Following two years in the Army, he worked for the Foreign Service for 30 years. Shima also served as the executive director of the Japanese-American Veterans Association, or JAVE, in 2004. He'd only been with the organization for three years. His work there furthered recognition of the contributions of Japanese-Americans in the U.S., helped strengthen relationships between Japanese-Americans and the people of Japan, and also ensured that Japanese-Americans remember how they were interred during World War II. Shima continues that work today, still with JAVE, where he serves as the chairman of its committee on outreach and education. In the citation for the award, it is noted that Shima is "a citizen of the United States." Sasae drew attention to that phrase, saying it carried special significance. "That phrase in the decoration, 'citizen of the United States of America' has special meaning to Shima-san and his generation. Citizens of the United States, this was the identity for those who lived each day loyal to these words, until his very loyalty was tested," Sasae said. The ambassador said it was a test of loyalty that, during that time, many Japanese-Americans had been imprisoned as a result of the outbreak of war with Japan. Yet many "went directly from being imprisoned in an internment camp to fighting for their country that had imprisoned them," Sasae said. "Fathers told sons to make them proud once again, and they did," Sasae said. "Eight hundred Nisei gave what the very best and most loyal citizens could give, their very lives. They died for those who were coming in the future, the children and the grandchildren." He said that it is Shima who helps ensure those descendants remember what happened to their families during World War II. "Shima-san, you have done your work well," the ambassador said. After accepting the award, which included both a medal and a large certificate printed in Japanese, Shima addressed the audience which included many Japanese-Americans, including Japanese-American service members. "I am deeply humbled to be selected to receive the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette," Shima said. "I will accept it on behalf of the other volunteers and some 30,000 Japanese-Americans who served during World War II, and the 800 who were left behind on the battlefields of France and Italy and the Pacific." He told those at the ambassador's residence that it is his work now, "in the trenches," to ensure that Japanese-Americans know about their history during World War II within the U.S., and to also further relations with Japan. "Japanese-Americans are proud of their racial and cultural heritage, as we are proud to be Americans," he said. "When Americans questioned Japanese-American loyalty, Nisei volunteered to serve in combat to prove their loyalty. And President Truman affirmed it, on July 15, 1946, at the Ellipse. The president's affirmation resonated across the land." Shima finished by thanking those involved, including the Japanese, for recognizing his contributions to relations between the two countries. "This sickening atrocity in London is exactly what we are paying the same kind of people to do in Syria," he wrote, provoking immediate controversy. Galloway, who opposes his country's decision to support some rebel groups in Syria, seems to be arguing that those rebels are akin to the machete attackers. While it's not clear why the two men killed a third in the London neighborhood of Woolwich, one of them later said, with blood still on his hands, "The only reasons we have done this is because Muslims are dying every day. This British soldier is an eye for an eye a tooth for tooth." Since making his comment, Galloway has been embroiled in a number of arguments on Twitter over the statement. He has dug in, saying that both Syrian rebels and the Woolwich attackers are "Al Qaeda followers. Sickening murderers. The kind we arm and pay for in Syria." When one Twitter user responded, "I don't think we go up to random people, run them over, then behead them," Galloway shot back, "no, we pay Al Qaeda to do so. In Syria." Western governments have indeed worried that funding intended for moderate Syrian rebel groups might end up in the hands of extremists, such as the al-Qaeda-allied group Jabhat al-Nusra. And some rebels have committed atrocities. Still, it seems a stretch to suggest that the U.K. government is paying Syrian opposition groups specifically to kill civilians or that it is seeking to fund al-Qaeda affiliates. Galloway has a history of controversial remarks on U.K. foreign policy in the Middle East. In 2003, as the Iraq War divided U.K. politics, Galloway was formerly expelled from the Labor Party on charges of "inciting Arabs to fight British troops" (the weird wording of that will be clearer in a moment) and "inciting British troops to defy orders." Miscalculations at the engineering stage have been blamed for a two-year delay in delivery of the first of four submarines commissioned from Spain's state-owned shipbuilder Navantia. Last month it emerged that the Isaac Peral sub - part of the new S-80 series and named in honour of the Spanish man credited by some as the inventor of the underwater vessel - was at least 75 tons overweight, an excess that could compromise its ability to surface after submerging. Navantia admitted the existence of "deviations related to the balance of weight" in the vessel and estimated it would take up to two years more to correct the problem. The 233ft vessel may have to be lengthened to compensate for the excess weight, a redesign that comes with an estimated cost of 7.5 million euros ($9 million) per extra metre. The shipbuilders based in Cartagena, southern Spain, are now seeking "technical experts from abroad" to advise in the redesign of what was billed as the "most modern conventional submarine". The original date for delivery was scheduled for March 2015 but it is now expected to be delayed by up to two years. The Spanish navy commissioned four of the submarines at a cost of 2.2 billion euros ($3 billion), one of the most expensive contracts in Spain's military history, but will now be facing a much larger bill. Those folks having their weapons and FID cards confiscated have been discovered to have been prescribed multiple different types of psychotropic drugs, such as those for Depression or Anxiety.
