Jurors return to federal court in Philadelphia on Tuesday to hear arguments and evidence on whether a drug dealer convicted in the deaths of a dozen people should be sentenced to death or to life in prison without possibility of parole.

The panel last week convicted 38-year-old Kaboni Savage of the slayings, including a 2004 firebombing that killed six relatives of a man who was planning to testify against him. Court officials said penalty phase proceedings scheduled for Monday would be delayed a day.

Authorities said that although Savage has mostly been in prison since 2003, he gave orders through phone calls and prison visits and communicated with other inmates through prison plumbing pipes.

His 30-year-old sister, Kidada Savage, faces life in prison after being convicted in the firebombing the killed the mother of the prospective witness as well as another woman and four children.

Kaboni Savage, a former boxer who has denied any role in the attacks, is serving a 30-year drug trafficking sentence. Defense attorneys portrayed him as a drug dealer but not a kingpin and attacked the credibility of prosecution witnesses.

Co-defendant Steven Northington was convicted of two counts of murder in aid of racketeering and could face the death penalty in penalty phase deliberations.

Another defendant, 32-year-old Robert Merritt, was convicted of racketeering conspiracy but acquitted of charges in the firebombing.

Conspiracy Theories in Kyrgyzstan: Accounts Tie Boston Bombers' Family to Mafia

In the eyes of Nataliya Kurotshkina, Tamerlan Tsarnaev was not a likely candidate to carry out attacks using explosives. "The boy winced at even a small firecracker," recounts the 49-year-old, who was Tamerlan's first-grade teacher in School No. 2 in Tokmok, a typical Soviet-era city in northern Kyrgyzstan near the border with Kazakhstan. The teacher with dyed-blond hair runs past a portrait of the Russian poet Alexander Pushkin on the second floor of the school. She produces a class picture from May 1995 showing Tamerlan, then a 9-year-old second grader, standing in the back row. He is wearing a blue suit and a white shirt while he gazes at the camera with curious eyes.

A class register listing the grades of all the students indicates that Tamerlan was ambitious and smart. He had top grades in almost all subjects, and was second-best only in math, geography and English. Kurotshkina describes her former student as "extraordinarily polite and well-raised."

However, even then there was another parallel world in which Tamerlan had been forced to grow up. In this world, violence was part of everyday life. "Tamerlan was a refugee child from Chechnya ," the teacher recounts. "That's probably also why he was very withdrawn at first."

Driven Back and Forth by War

US investigators have identified Tamerlan and his younger brother, Dzhokhar, as the presumed perpetrators of the double bombing attack during the Boston Marathon on April 15. The homemade pressure cooker bombs they allegedly built killed three and injured more than 260, and they are also accused of subsequently killing a campus police officer. The brothers had lived in the United States for years. Tamerlan was killed in a shootout while trying to flee police, while Dzhokhar was cornered and captured on April 19 after being severely wounded.

In 1944, the brothers' grandfather was one of some 90,000 Chechens who Stalin had deported to Kyrgyzstan, then part of the Soviet Union. After the collapse of the Soviet empire, the Tsarnaevs sold their small house in Tokmok before returning to Chechnya.

Once they arrived, the Tsarnaev family reportedly owned some land in the early 1990s in the village of Chiri-Yurt, which lies about 25 kilometers (15 miles) south of the capital, Grozny. By all indications, the family was hoping to build a new life in Chechnya. Instead, they entered a region that was sliding into a war between Russian soldiers and independence fighters. "Tamerlan's father told me that he had no desire to fight and die in Chechnya," says Abil Seimkasiyev, Tamerlan's former boxing instructor.

The war fought between Russia and Chechnya between 1994 and 1996 was particularly savage, with kidnappings, bombings and decapitations. The family fled and returned to Tokmok.

Anzor Tsarnaev, Tamerlan's father, then owned a red Skoda that he would drive around the area. By all accounts, he made a living there as an auto mechanic. Reports from a number of international media sources, including the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times, have frequently indicated that Anzor was a lawyer. But, in reality, he only had an identification card listing him as a "aide to the prosecutor's office," a document that was easily purchased on the black market in the 1990s. In any case, the father of the two suspected terrorists never studied law, says the Kyrgyz National University, which was the only institution training lawyers in the country at the time. There is also nothing to be found about Anzor Tsarnaev in the Central Asian country's archives, leading one senior official in the Interior Ministry to posit that the archives must have been "sanitized."

The Al Capone of Kyrgyzstan

These and other clues have given rise to a number of conspiracy theories in Kyrgyzstan. They revolve around the friendship that Tamerlan's father had with Aziz Batukayev, a crime boss known as the "Al Capone of Kyrgyzstan" who has been accused of being behind murders, gang wars, drug trafficking and prostitution. He also numbers among the main figures in criminal organizations operating in an area of the former Soviet Union that stretches across several borders.

Batukayev and Anzor Tsarnaev were close childhood friends. Both ethnic Chechens, they were born in the same year, attended the same school (No. 8), shared a boxing coach and often played soccer together on dusty streets. They also grew up in the same neighbourhood, with less than 200 meters (650 feet) separating their parents' homes. "They herded goats and cows together," says the brother of the mafia kingpin. "But Batukayev already looked lost on any day that he didn't get in a fight, while Anzor Tsarnaev also liked to read books a lot."

On April 9, six days before the attacks in Boston, Batukayev was surprisingly released from prison after serving several years because he was supposedly terminally ill with leukaemia. He then disappeared into Chechnya in a rented SUV. The blood sample used to prove Batukayev's illness reportedly came from another patient. Indeed, many in Kyrgyzstan believe that the short period of time between the release of the mafia boss and the Boston attacks are more than coincidental, though there is no concrete evidence to back these assertions.

Last week, individuals claiming to work for American law-enforcement agencies were trying to gather details about the Tsarnaev family's earlier life. They knocked on the doors of former neighbors, asked questions and gave candy to children. "But a lot of the kids don't try them because they might be poisoned," says the sister-in-law of the mafia boss.

Here, just as everywhere in the countries once belonging to the Soviet Union, residents are deeply ambivalent about the United States , which is simultaneously an object of hate and a land of promise. The Tsarnaevs came to the US in 2002. In the wake of the terror attacks in Boston, many of their former neighbors in Tokmok don't want to be associated with them anymore. "After the family returned from Chechnya, I only ran into Tamerlan's father a few times in the city," Batukayev's brother guardedly says. But another neighbor says that Tamerlan's father had tea with the Batukayevs during his last visit to the city in the summer of 2012.

As law-enforcement officials search for clues about the early life of the Boston Marathon bombers, a number of conspiracy theories are coming to light. Many are based on alleged ties between the men's father and a local mafia boss in Kyrgyzstan.

The False Illuminati Kingpin. Meet unemployed Adham Damani

Meet Adham Damani, a 25 year old Arab immigrant to Sweden, who decided he would pose as an Illuminati in order to blame terror attacks carried out by Muslims on ...yes, you guessed right, "The Illuminati".

During an interview Adham revealed that ever since 911 he was scared the West may be inclined to make Islam appear worse than it is. While it is certainly true that Muslims consider every human being to be born Muslim (hence Christians and Jews cannot 'convert' but only 're-vert', and that the penalty for apostasy from the "religion of peace" is death, Adam Damani wanted to help Islam paint a slightly different picture of itself than the grim face reality has bestowed on it.Always fascinated by conspiracy theories such as those about the Illuminati, most famously portrayed in Robert Anton Wilson's novel series "The Illuminatus Trilogy", he decided to blame a lot of current world events and political failures on this invisible enemy rather than the failings of actual politicians and religions. The things he learnt about secret societies on Youtube and websites such as davidicke.com, would become key in the creation of his now relatively well known yet underground Illumi-Corp network, which aims to recruit the gullible and greedy.

Above:One of the supposed training videos that aim to expose the Illuminati and blame Muslim terror attacks on an invisible Illuminati conspiracy

The domain http://illumi-corp.org is putting out supposed Illuminati videos that have some conspiracy theorists believe they have the chance of actually joining the ancient order, founded in 1776 by Adam Weishaupt in Ingolstadt (The group was later banned within 20 years of its beginning and only resurfaced through Robert Anton Wilson's conspiracy novel "The Illuminatus Trilogy" in 1975)

The website eventually leads to another website titled "JoinTheIlluminati.Com" which once again is a masqerade aimed at tricking fools into believing they can actually join a real secret society.
From there on, Damani is asking you to infiltrate several Western businesses, before you will be considered for membership.

Among the most prominent businesses in the list are: Barclays, Deutsche bank as well as the Red Cross and Goldmann Sachs.

(meet Adham Damani. Muslim immigrant and wanna-be Weishaupt)

If anything, this pseudo secret society reminds of Al Quaeda, which recruits dumbed down disappointed and disillusioned Muslims and turns them into radicals by making them believe they are part of something big. It is helping disillusioned Muslim youth point the finger at invisible enemies, instead of facing the mistakes of their own religion. It must be assumed that the organization is illegal, as any organized effort to infiltrate businesses for the gain of a group (even though in this case harmless) can be considered a crime, unless carried out by law enforcement for the purposes of uncovering evidence.

What follows are more details about 'Illuminati' Adham Damani's presence on illumi-corp.org. He is now living as an immigrant in Ostersund, Sweden, happily protected by Western civilization's justice system. Were such a "conspiracy" unearthed in his native homeland, he would probably soon end up hanged in public on accusations of 'witchcraft'.

Gary Webb - CIA Drug Smuggling [2004]

Gary Webb, the Pulitzer prize-winning reporter who broke the story of the CIAs involvement in the importation of cocaine into the U.S., died December 10, 2004, reportedly from self-inflicted gunshots to the head.

It was a tragic end to a brilliant, and tragic, career.

In August 1996, the San Jose Mercury News published Webbs 20,000 word, three-part series entitled Dark Alliance. The articles detailed the nexus between a California coke kingpin, CIA officials and assets and the Nicaraguan Contra army, whose funding had been cut off by an act of Congress in the mid-80s. Webb found evidence that the CIA had direct contact with the smugglers, knew the proceeds were going to fund the murderous Contras, and tried to cover it up when other law enforcement agencies began investigating. The most troubling aspect to the story was that the central player was no ordinary drug lord. He was the man many credit for popularizing crack, the highly addictive, smoke-able form of cocaine.

For many African-Americans, the story smacked of a grand conspiracy to destroy the black community. There were rallies in Watts and Compton, and heated discussions on black media across the country. Members of the Congressional Black Caucus called for a federal investigation. In November 1996, CIA director John Deutch appeared at Locke High School in South Central Los Angeles to personally answer to the allegations. He was met with loud jeers. It was a PR disaster.

But it was Webb who found himself on the ropes. Ironically, the CIA did little to publicly counter his allegations. Instead, the media did its dirty work for them, most notably the Los Angeles Times and the Washington Post. The mainstream media accused Webb of exaggerating his findings.

For Webb, the most confounding part of the whole affair was that he ended up being accused of making allegations he never made specifically that the CIA-crack connection was part of a larger, genocidal plot to kill off black people. Webb never made that claim though he noted in his book, "Dark Alliance: The CIA, the Contras, and the Crack Cocaine Explosion," the inherent racism in a covert policy that reaped so much destruction on such a vulnerable segment of society.

He wrote, Dark Alliance does not propound a conspiracy theory; there is nothing theoretical about history. In this case, it is undeniable that a wildly successful conspiracy to import cocaine existed for many years, and that innumerable American citizensmost of them poor and blackpaid an enormous price as a result. This book was written for them, so that they may know upon what altars their communities were sacrificed.

The fact is by 1996 it was common knowledge in the so-called alternative media that there were connections between the Contras, the Agency and drugs. In 1988, a Senate subcommittee investigation headed by Sen. John Kerry concluded the links were there. Oliver Norths own diary noted, $14 million to buy arms for the Contras came from drugs.

Nevertheless, Webbs editors at the Mercury News hung him out to dry, without ever providing any evidence that any of his reporting was wrong. He was reassigned, then forced out. Webb went on to work as an investigator for the state of California, penning a report on racial profiling by state police. More recently, he landed a reporting job at a Sacramento newspaper.

In honor of Webbs legacy of authentic journalism, GNN presents this exclusive interview, in which Webb discusses Dark Alliance, the media maelstrom, and the storys historical importance.

Jimmy Hoffa's Final Fate (10 Theories) W/ VIDEO INTERVIEW

Jimmy Hoffa, the notorious Teamsters Union leader who disappeared without a trace on July 30, 1975, would have celebrated his 100th birthday on Valentine's Day 2013. Hoffa's centennial birthday comes just a few weeks after yet another aging reputed mob boss, Tony Zerilli, claimed that he knows what happened to Hoffa, and that his body is located just 20 miles north of the suburban Detroit restaurant where he was last seen. It's the type of claim that usually brings the FBI out with earthmoving equipment to dig up yet another yard or farm or field in Michigan in search of Hoffa's body. But some contend that Hoffa is still alive. Speculation that the besieged union leader could still be alive or that he met his demise peacefully - from old age and not "two bullets to the hat" - are among 10 of the following obscure and/or bizarre theories floated by conspiracy buffs and mob insiders to explain the enduring mystery of Jimmy Hoffa's fate.

10. Hoffa is Still AliveGranted, even if he managed to foil ruthless mobsters, corrupt union bigwigs, politicians with a lot to lose, or aliens (see No. 9 below), the chances of Hoffa still being alive would be slim, given that he would be a centenarian at this point. The theory emerged shortly after his disappearance, when another Teamster (and former Hoffa confidante), Rolland McMaster, asserted that his one-time friend had simply left his wife, Josephine, and their two children to live with a "black go-go dancer" in South America. According to the FBI Vault, McMaster himself was once a suspect, and in recent years, an ex-con who allegedly worked with McMaster came forward with the gun supposedly used to kill Hoffa.

9. Little Green Men Took HoffaWhile you might think this is a completely fringe theory - that aliens abducted the union leader - it's not so laughable in fringe ufology circles. As the story goes, a 60-something retired used car salesman, Tom Dawson, saw Hoffa aboard what sounds like the stereotypical UFO popularized in Steven Spielberg's Close Encounters of the Third Kind (which was released the same year Dawson made his alleged sighting in Georgia). The Dawson account includes a craft that's some 50 feet in diameter with flashing lights and around seven, short, hairless beings, with pointy ears and noses and speaking in a "high-pitched gibberish." Apparently, the only creature aboard that didn't speak that way was Hoffa, who announced his presence (only after Dawson claims he was subjected to an invasive medical exam by the "humanoids") by screaming three times: ""I am Jimmy Hoffa!" Apparently, the alien beings didn't like that, cut Jimmy off during the fourth repetition and the voice wasn't heard from again.

8. A Notorious Hitman Took Down HoffaEven in the savage world of mob hitmen, Richard Kuklinski's ruthlessness stood out. Kuklinski (aka "The Iceman") claims to have killed more than 200 people during a 40-year reign of terror as the heavy for organized crime syndicates in NYC and New Jersey. Hoffa's murder seems particularly elaborate; in the book, The Iceman: Confessions of a Mafia Contract Killer, Kuklinski claims to have first stabbed Hoffa with a hunting knife at the base of his skull before placing the corpse in a 55-gallon oil drum, which he then set on fire and burned for 30 minutes. From there, Kuklinski dumped the barrel in a New Jersey junkyard, and later moved it to a car trunk when an accomplice started talking to the feds. That car, he maintained, was later crushed and subsequently shipped to Japan as scrap metal for new cars.

7. Hoffa is Buried at a Popular Golf CourseOfficials at Forest Dunes Golf Course, a nationally recognized course in Michigan's lower peninsula, don't shy away from its possible connection to Hoffa. According to the Forest Dunes website, Hoffa may be a "permanent fixture to the grounds," due to the course's location on a site once owned by "The Detroit Partnership" made up of three local mafia families. Those families created one of the biggest ranches in the state's history, with enormous barns, a private runway and more eerie features - like underground tunnels and hidden rooms. Rumored to be the site of dozens of "mafia-style" executions, including Hoffa's, the ranch sat abandoned for years after the feds seized it for tax evasion. Even though the notorious compound has made way for a lush golf course, the site and its nearby Pere Cheney cemetery still inspire ghost stories. As the course's website notes, "If you happen to find Jimmy, please notify Superintendent Jim Blunk first, the FBI second!"

6. Hoffa was Processed in a Meat-Rendering PlantThis stomach-churning theory is referenced in the FBI's Vault, a collection of thousands of historical documents made public in 2011. These documents refer to investigations of properties, including meatpacking plants, owned by another Teamsters official (and reputed Chicago kingpin), Allen Dorfman. Incidentally, Dorfman inspired the role of Andy Stone in the gang flick Casino, and the real public figure was gunned down in the early 1980s - an act prompted by fears that he'd squeal to the FBI to avoid an impending 55-year prison sentence tied to a number of felonies, including bribing a public official and fraud. FBI records note that Dorfman's business interests were "supposedly involved in the disappearance of Hoffa." This further supports a popular theory in conspiracy circles: that Hoffa's remains were run through a mob-owned fat-rendering plant, which burned to the ground in a "mysterious" fire.

5. The CIA Ordered Hoffa KilledUltimately, all sensational conspiracies come back to one thing: the government did it. Chuckie O'Brien, who many believe was like another son to Hoffa as O'Brien's father died when he was a young boy, contends that the government did it. But many surmise that's just a weak way to deflect attention from the ultimate double-cross: that this man would literally drive the only father figure he really had to his death, delivering him to the arms of the former mob allies who wanted the union bigwig dead. But there are many others out there who contend the CIA wanted Hoffa dead because of something much bigger than bickering among Teamsters union officials and their mob-connected associates; that Hoffa was the original link between the underworld and the CIA in a plot employing mob muscle and devised to take out Cuban dictator Fidel Castro in the 1960s. In fact, mob hitman Charles Grimaldi, in his book, Momo Giancana was hit by the CIA, purports (albeit this is a highly simplified version of the theory) that Hoffa and two reputed mob leaders "got popped" because "people in high places" worried that that they might turn informants to this conspiracy.

4. Hoffa Is Buried in Savannah, GeorgiaOne theory holds that Hoffa is buried under a former hotel-turned-upscale condo development near Savannah, on Wilmington Island. The Teamsters Union Pension Fund of the Central States once owned the hotel. In addition to the convenient ownership of this property, the flames for this rumor were fanned by county officials who, according to local press, noted there was a suspicious "huge rush" by hotel ownership to pour the concrete for a helicopter pad near the main parking lot right around the time Hoffa went MIA. However, a developer tasked with renovating the old hotel debunks at least the helicopter pad claim, noting that this portion of the property wasn't even created until six years after Hoffa disappeared.

3. President Nixon Knew Something About Hoffa's DisappearanceMuch has been made through the years of President Richard Nixon's friendship with the mob, theorized as a means of generating political goodwill and, in some respects, indicative of a time period when the lines between good and evil were blurred, and organized crime truly ruled. Conspiracy theorists constantly go back to Nixon commuting what would have been a 13-year sentence for Hoffa for jury tampering. That decision only came with one, albeit important, stipulation: that Hoffa stay out of union politics until the spring of 1980. It's widely reported that sentiments were shifting toward Hoffa's successor, Frank Fitzsimmons, as mob leaders considered him easier to manipulate than Hoffa. But the former Teamsters leader had his eye on returning to power which, it's surmised, would not have benefited the mafia or political interests at that time. Although the FBI does not believe Nixon knew anything about Hoffa's disappearance, the agency suspects that Nixon's operatives collected $1 million from organized crime figures to use as "hush money" for the Watergate burglars.

2. Hoffa Communicated His Fate in an "ESP Dream"The FBI Vault is bursting with colorful material about Hoffa, including this gem: According to archived documents, Hoffa reached out to a man 20 years after his disappearance, via an "ESP dream." In that dream, this man was told the Teamsters boss (at least what remained of him) was holed up in a house in Waterford Township, Michigan, near Detroit. Apparently, this "informant" also disclosed that he likes to watch the X-Files and that there was a "terrible smell" coming from the home. There is no mistaking that community and its environs are a mecca for fruitless Hoffa searches. Through the years, law enforcement and media alike have descended upon the area, combing fields, even tearing down a horse barn to get to a body that never surfaced.

1. Hoffa is Buried Under a Famous Detroit LandmarkAs mentioned earlier, arguably the most persistent theory about Hoffa's final fate is that he was buried during construction of the former Giants Stadium in New Jersey, now a parking lot for MetLife Stadium. In 2011, speculation surfaced that Hoffa's final resting spot is under Detroit's Renaissance Center, the global headquarters for General Motors that features a mix of lodging, restaurants, event spaces and retailers. Police didn't get this info from some eccentric; the information came from Hoffa's former chauffeur, Marvin Elkind, who later became a police informant and subject of the book, The Weasel: A Double Life in the Mob. Apparently, during a Teamsters meeting in Detroit in 1985, mob capo Anthony Giacalone pointed to the Renaissance Center's foundation and told Elkind and several others, "Say good morning to Jimmy Hoffa, boys." At least the time frame fits; construction on the center lasted from 1973 to 1977.

OMG! - http://news.yahoo.com/video/alleged-high-school-drug-kingpin-080000889.html

Ohio police have arrested an alleged drug kingpin, a 17-year-old accused of running a multimillion dollar ring that distributed high-grade marijuana through two school districts and netted $20,000 a month.

When cops raided the boy's bedroom at his parents' home, they found over $6,000 in cash, prosecutors said.

Authorities have not released the student's name, because he was a 16-year-old minor at the time he committed the alleged drug deals. Warren County Prosecutor David Fornshell said the boy will be tried as juvenile.

Cops first became aware of a high-grade hydroponic strain of marijuana being sold for $350-$400 an ounce in the Mason school district near Cincinnati last year. An undercover agent began making buys at Mason High School, where the teenager was a student, and uncovered a dealing operation headed by the arrested student.

"The undercover officer uncovered six students or former students working for that individual and trafficking drugs in two school districts," Fornshell told ABC News.

"The group supplied an overwhelming amount of marijuana in the Mason and King school districts," Fornshell said.

The marijuana previously sold in the areas was a lower-grade variety smuggled into the U.S. through the border, but the weed they began seeing last year was a much more expensive product.

The student helped lead cops to uncover a major grow operation, run by locals out of warehouses and other buildings in three nearby towns.

Six other adult individuals were ultimately arrested for their role in growing and distributing the drug.

Authorities seized 600 plants from the three grow houses, with an estimated street value of $3 million.

All of the individuals have been indicted by a grand jury, but have yet to be arraigned or enter pleas.

(CNN) -- A suspected drug kingpin on the "15 Most Wanted" fugitives list has been arrested in Los Angeles, the U.S. Marshals Service announced Thursday.
Keith Hasson, 45, was arrested without incident Wednesday at an apartment northwest of downtown Los Angeles, between Burbank and Thousand Oaks, according to a statement from the Marshals Service. He is reputed to have been the leader of a nationwide cocaine and marijuana trafficking ring that operated from 1999 to 2005 and generated more than $20 million in cash and assets, the statement said.
Hasson was wanted on a 2005 open indictment from the U.S. District Court in New Mexico for conspiracy to distribute controlled substances, continuing criminal enterprise and conspiracy to launder money, according to the statement. His brother, Anthony Hasson, was convicted in the same case and was sentenced to more than 24 years in prison.
Keith Hasson was placed on the most-wanted fugitive list on June 6. His criminal history dates back to 1981 and includes arrests for attempted murder, robbery, assault with a deadly weapon, vehicle theft, burglary and possession with intent to distribute, according to the Marshals Service. He also is wanted for questioning in two gang-related killings.
Investigators say they believe Hasson had access to significant financial resources -- as well as far-flung family ties in the Southwest, Southeast and New York -- and was continuing to organize a criminal enterprise.
"Keith Hasson had a long run as a leader of a criminal organization," Geoff Shank, acting assistant director of the Investigative Operations Division for the U.S. Marshals Service, said in a written statement. "Thanks to the Marshals and their law enforcement partners, that long run has come to an end."

A federal judge sentenced internationally known e-mail spammer Christopher William Smith on Wednesday to 30 years in prison for running an illegal Internet pharmacy that sold about $24 million in prescription drugs.
U.S. District Judge Michael Davis called Smith, 27, a "drug kingpin" as he meted out the sentence requested by federal prosecutors. Though Davis expressed some misgivings about the length of the prison term recommended by sentencing guidelines, he said it was nonetheless reasonable.

The government argued for a long sentence because of Smith's flagrant defiance of judicial orders and his death threat against a witness in the case. Just days after a federal judge shut down the Burnsville pharmacy in May 2005 and ordered Smith to refrain from selling drugs, Smith traveled to the Dominican Republic using a false passport and took steps to open a new online pharmacy. He even withdrew money that had been frozen by a previous court order.

Smith was convicted in November of nine charges of conspiracy, illegal distribution of drugs, money laundering and operating a "continuing criminal enterprise."

Smith's appearance Wednesday followed three other sentencings related to Smith's online drugstore, which he called Xpress Pharmacy.

Darrell Arden Griepp, 46, of Burnsville got three years of probation and 80 hours of community service after pleading guilty to one count of conspiracy and one count of distributing controlled substances. He played a minor role as a telephone marketer and deserved leniency, said Assistant U.S. Attorney Nicole Engisch.

Next came Bernadette Hollis of the Kansas City area. Hollis, who pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting the acquisition of hydrocodone for Smith's pharmacy operation, was a critical witness for the government. Hollis helped set up the operation's databases and stepped forward first to help the government, Engisch said.

As an informant Hollis put herself at risk, Engisch said. On March 4, 2006, Smith called a colleague in the Philippines and discussed ways to shut her up by threatening her children's lives.

In the phone call, Smith told Roanna Cleofe that he wanted her to arrange to have someone take photos of Hollis' children. If Hollis wants to testify, she can, he said. "We're going to give her the option of which one of her kids she's going to sacrifice for doing so."

Cleofe, who has been charged in connection with the alleged threat, told an FBI agent that she didn't believe Smith was serious.

But in the phone call, which was played at a hearing Tuesday, Smith told her that he was not joking. "It's a kill-or-be-killed world," Smith said.

Smith went on to ask Cleofe about hiring a hit man.

Smith later told the judge that he was not serious in the phone call and blamed his comments on his bipolar disorder.

Davis sentenced Hollis to a year of probation and 40 hours of community service. "I'm sure I won't be seeing you again," Davis said. "You take care of yourself now."

Alton Scott Poe, Smith's second-in-command at the pharmacy, came next. Engisch told Davis that Poe had been "one of the most significant and important cooperators in this matter." Poe pleaded guilty in February 2006 to conspiracy and unlawful distribution of a controlled substance. Davis sentenced him to 6 months in prison and 6 months of home detention, plus 3 years of supervised release.

Davis questioned Smith extensively Tuesday to determine whether the government had substantiated its reasons for seeking enhanced penalties. With each answer, Smith tightened his own noose.

Smith admitted that he got his wife, his father, his mother and stepfather to help conceal cash from the government, having them wrap $100,000 bundles in plastic and hide them in cereal boxes. Smith admitted concealing about $1.1 million this way.

Smith said he didn't intend to become "the drug lord of Internet pharmacy," but admitted that most of his businesses "have been on the edge of what the government liked and didn't like."

The pharmacy was very lucrative: the government seized 17 of Smith's automobiles and sold them at auction in 2006 for more than $1.6 million.

Joe Friedberg, Smith's attorney, told Davis on Wednesday that no other Internet pharmacy conviction has resulted in sentences exceeding 20 years.

Engisch said the government had been willing to cut Smith a deal early on. But Smith changed that forever when he threatened Hollis, she said.

"Mr. Smith is nothing but a drug dealer," she said. "He's a high-tech drug dealer."

Richer than Frank Lucas. More powerful than the Mafia. He was the biggest drug dealer in America. In 1973 he jumped bail and disappeared with 15 million dollars. He has never been seen again. Nearly four decades later, the fate of Frank Matthews remains a complete mystery.

"It's as if Matthews dropped off the face of the earth...", explains Mike Pizzi, a retired U.S. Marshal who was involved with the hunt for Matthews.
