Major Didier Pericou of the gendarmerie said the woman had fallen down a 300-metre slope while taking a short cut walking with two friends. "There were only bones, clothes and shoes left," he told The Times. "They took 45 to 50 minutes to eat the body." French farmers are now demanding the right to shoot the protected birds after attacks on sheep and cows. The birds no longer have their diet of carcasses because European health and safety regulations now force breeders to burn dead animals. The Pyrenees population of Griffon vultures has apparently been affected by an EC ruling that due to danger of BSE transmission, no dead animals must be left on the fields. This has critically lowered the food availability of the scavenging birds. Like other vultures, the Griffon is a scavenger, feeding mostly on carcasses of dead animals which it finds by soaring over open areas, often moving in flocks. The maximum lifespan recorded for a specimen kept in captivity is 41.4 years. Fear of vultures has been growing in recent years. Le Nouvel Observateur reports of 'mutant vultures', with one woman saying that a group of the birds, whose wingspans can exceed seven feet , hovered near to where her children were sitting. One farmer, Alain Larralde, reported seeing a group of vultures attack and start eating an adult cow . There have also been alleged sightings of live animals being carried off . "You can't imagine what it is like to see an animal eaten alive ," Mr Larralde was reported to have said. Over the past few months, there have been 42 claims for compensation from farmers who say they have had livestock taken by the birds. The vultures, which have evolved to eat carrion and not tackle live prey, may have changed their habits due to starvation. According to a New Scientist report, there have been cases of vultures grabbing the bodies of shot animals before the hunters can reach them. From the image it is very clear that the mammory glands (i.e the udder) is next to the large intestine. Firstly, this particular translation of the meaning states specifically, "Grazing livestock". In the text in from The Quartlery Journal of Experimental Physiology it is specifically mentioned that the ammount of blood flow varies according to feeding and the verse from the Qur'an mentions the animals as Grazing (a type of feeding). Secondly, it confirms that the mammory glands are located next to a blood stream . Thirdly, it confirms that the place next to the blood stream also absorbs blood . I personally like to consider these 3 extra evidences as the 'nail in the coffin'. That's a lot of proof from the text of the verse and perhaps to you and maybe so; it is all a co-incidence or perhaps not, but the important thing here is to reminder the verse is still correct in it's initial meaning. The rider, which is officially known as the Farmer Assurance Provision, has been derided by opponents of biotech lobbying as the " Monsanto Protection Act ," as it would strip federal courts of the authority to immediately halt the planting and sale of genetically modified (GMO) seed crop regardless of any consumer health concerns. The provision, also decried as a " biotech rider ," should have gone through the Agricultural or Judiciary Committees for review. Instead, no hearings were held, and the piece was evidently unknown to most Democrats (who hold the majority in the Senate) prior to its approval as part of HR 993, the short-term funding bill that was approved to avoid a federal government shutdown. Senator John Tester (D-MT) proved to be the lone dissenter to the so-called Monsanto Protection Act, though his proposed amendment to strip the rider from the bill was never put to a vote. As the US legal system functions today, and largely as a result of prior lawsuits, the USDA is required to complete environmental impact statements (EIS) prior to both the planting and sale of GMO crops. The extent and effectiveness to which the USDA exercises this rule is in itself a source of serious dispute. Lifeline to Iran Although Syunik is Armenia's second largest province, it is also one of its least populated. With 15 percent of Armenia's land area, Syunik has less than 5 percent of Armenia's people. The population dropped in the late 1980s, after ethnic fighting forced an Azeri minority to flee to Azerbaijan and northern Iran. Without a large local population to draw on, the Iranian sheep project would mean importing Iranian shepherds, and possibly their families. The memorandum of understanding was signed between Syunik and the neighboring Iranian province, a place with a name that sounds ominous to many Armenians - Eastern Atrapatakan, or Eastern Azerbaijan. With a population 20 times that of Syunik, Eastern Atrapatakan is keystone of the northern Iran's Azeri minority - about 17 million people. So, the Iranian sheep deal could come with as many 10,000 ethnic Azeri shepherds, their families, and their watchdogs. Then, there is another wrinkle. Over the last 20 years, the withdrawal of Armenian shepherds from the mountain pastures has allowed the nation's wolf population to surge. Armenian authorities now pay a $275 bounty for each wolf shot. So, it stands to reason that Iranian shepherds would carry rifles to protect their flocks from wolves and other predators. Men with Rifles So, in a nutshell, Armenians say, the Iranian sheep deal could mean infiltrating into a strategic area several thousand ethnic Azeri men, all armed with rifles. "With the sheep, a couple of thousand people may come to Armenia, and may live in places that are strategically important for Armenia," said Evoyan, of the Armenia's PreParliament opposition group. "It's not only about the employment. As I said, it's about the non-formal, informal migration of other nationalities to Armenia that is not strategically right choice for Armenia." On Feb. 14, four days before Armenia's hotly contested presidential election, Evoyan and others protested the sheep deal in front of Armenia's National Assembly building in Yerevan. I arrived in Armenia's capital the next day. But Gohar Abrahamyan, a reporter for Armenia Now news website, covered the protest. She got environmentalist Silva Adamyan to say out loud what many Armenians are thinking quietly. "I remember how the Azerbaijanis were quietly taking control of Syunik during the Soviet years," Adamyan told Armenia Now. "We have liberated it. And now, we want to give it to them again? Can't we really understand that it is the same Azeris - citizens of Iran - who would be coming back to Syunik, bring their families, and so the blood shed for those lands would turn out to be for nothing?" In Armenia's presidential election, Serzh Sargsyan, the incumbent was re-elected. But the opposition performed strongly and has been continuing with street protests.
