A frightening scene caught on camera as a passenger plane made an emergency leading at newark airport overnight without its landing gear. Sparks seen shooting from the plane as the pilot was forced to make a belly landing at one of the nation's largest airports with dozens of passengers on board. Abc's lisa stark is here with the details.
Lisa how common are emergency landings like this one? Reporter: Bianna, they aren't uncommon. Piles can prepare for them in the simulator although they always look very dramatic and obviously you'd rather land with your landing gear.
Let's take a look at what happened last night. It was at newark at 1:00 in the morning this pilot coming in for a dramatic landing. You can see srks were flying.
The pilot did a great job keeping that turboprop on the runway and the wings level. Fire and rescue crews were standing by. They immediately foamed the runway, foamed that plane to make sure there was no fire.
31 passengers on board, three crew members, everyone, everyone got out safely. Us airways flight coming from philadelphia, it had taken off about 10:50 in the evening. It was supposed to be just a short hop to newark.
The pilot finanding gear is not working. The pilots then circle the tower for awhile while controllers and the crew tried to trouble shoot and reports now that the pilots decided, okay, we got to get all this landing gear up if we can't get it all down and come in on our belly. That's exactly what they did.
That plane apparently still on the runway. These pictures taken just moments ago. They're going to move it off the runway and what cording to us airways investigators with the national transportation safety board already on the scene there trying to figure out just what went wrong with this plane.
That's right, the ntsb busy at work this morning. But how prepared are pilots for this type of situation and how did this pilot manage to land the plane without any injuries to the passengers? Reporter: Well, the pilot did a great job.
They are somewhat prepared for this. They can practice this in the simulator. You may remember back in 2005 there was a really scary incident down at l.A. X. Airport in los angeles where a jetblue came in with its landing gear crooked.
It was actually in the wrong position, sparks were flying there too. Everyone landed safely. Got out safely.

Gear-up emergency landing of a US Airways Express, operated by Piedmont, DeHavilland Dash-8-100 at Newark Liberty International Airport. 01:10am May 18 2010. No injuries reported.

Supersized Labor: Detroit Sees Largest Fast-Food Strike in U.S. History

When Michigan's Republican Governor Rick Snyder signed controversial "right-to-work" legislation last December, it was a significant policy defeat for the American labor movement. But the symbolism of anti-union laws passing in Michigan was even more potent. In 1936, United Auto Workers members occupied a General Motors factory in Flint, MI, beginning what came to be known as the Flint Sit-Down Strike. The action led to the organizing of the automotive industry and helped spur the modern labor movement in the United States.

Today, workers are striking in Michigan once again, but the picket line isn't in front of an automotive factory. Following surprise strikes in New York, Chicago and, earlier this week, St. Louis, fast-food workers across Detroit walked off the job today, demanding the right to form a union and a base-pay rate of $15 per hour.

In the introduction to a petition on detroit15.org , a group involved in organizing the walkout, the impetus for the strike is laid out in more detail

Our employers-thriving corporations like McDonald's, Burger King, KFC, Dollar Tree, Little Caesar's, Domino's, Long John Silver's and others-are making billions of dollars, but they pay us poverty wages as we struggle with our coworkers to support our families and cover our basic needs.

More than 400 workers have walked off the job today, making the Detroit action the largest fast-food strike in American history. Furthermore, this is the first strike to take place in a "right-to-work" state.

With their low pay and limited benefits , fast-food jobs are by no means ideal employment. And while working for minimum wage and no healthcare may be perfect for the proverbial burger-flipping high school student, that clich'ed notion of a fast-food employee is increasingly dated. The median age of fast-food workers is 28, and that number skews four years older for women, who make up two-thirds of the workforce. Rent, utilities, car payments, groceries, childcare and other financial responsibilities have to be covered with an annual average annual salary of just $18,810.

The growing momentum of these fast-food strikes suggests that a new approach to labor actions may be gaining traction and proving successful. Reporting on the Detroit strike for The Nation , Josh Eidelson writes,

Along with a shared significant supporter-SEIU-the campaigns in New York, Chicago, St. Louis and Detroit have apparent strategies in common. Rather than waiting until they've built support from a majority of a store's or company's workers, they stage actions by a minority of the workforce designed to inspire their co-workers. Rather than publicly identifying the campaign and its organizers with a single international union, these union-funded efforts turn to allied community groups to spearhead organizing. Rather than training all their resources on a single company, they organize against all of the industry's players at once.

This strike may be taking place in Michigan, but the tactics couldn't be more different than those of the UAW.

It's too early to determine the successes or failures of today's work stoppage, but Detroit's union culture appears to be giving the strikers a boost: Organizers are reporting that replacement workers called in to reopen one McDonald's location refused to cross the picket line and joined the strike instead.

Detroit @ mcdonalds called in for workers to replace strikers. Replacements arrived & saw strikers.

McDonald's burger bought in Utah in 1999 looks exactly the same as the day it was first flipped (even after it spent two years in a COAT POCKET)If you need another reason to kick the junk food habit this should do it.

A Utah man has unearthed a McDonald's hamburger he bought in 1999 - and the sandwich looks exactly the same as the day it was first flipped.DavidWhipple kept the fast food meal for a month to show friends how the preservative-packed hamburger would keep its composure. But he forgot about it, finding it two years later in his coat pocket and then he decided to continue the bizarre experiment.

However, even he was shocked to see that the hamburger still looks the same a whopping 14 years later. 'It wasn't on purpose,' Whipple told TV show 'The Doctors,' of his decision to keep the burger for such a long time. 'I was showing some people how enzymes work and I thought a hamburger would be a good idea. And I used it for a month and then I forgot about it.

'It ended up in a paper sack in the original sack with the receipt in my coat pocket tossed in the back of my truck and it sat there for, I don't know, two or three months.'He said his coat ended up in the coat closet of his Logan, Utah, home.

'My wife didn't discover it until at least a year or two after that,' he said. 'And we pulled it out and said "oh my gosh. I can't believe it looks the same way."'

The burger had no signs of mold, fungus or even a strange odor, the show's hosts said. The only thing that had changed over the years was that the pickle had disintegrated.

Whipple, who still has the original receipt for the burger, said he now shows the sandwich to his grandchildren to encourage them to eat healthily.'It's great for my grand-kids to see. To see what happens with fast food,' he said.

Boy with AUTISM's hands blown off by bullies

KEEP IN MIND THIS BOY IS AUTISTIC
THE boy who lost both hands in a golf ball bomb blast says he didn't know the device was deadly - and told how he wished it was a dream when he looked at his injuries.

Michael Boggan lost both of his hands yesterday afternoon after the device, understood to be a golf ball, exploded in the back yard of a house in Leichhardt, near Ipswich, west of Brisbane.

Today, speaking from his Princess Alexandra Hospital, he said: "Tell the kids out there to tell your parents if you find anything unusual. Just don't pick it up at all.""If you ever find anything with white powder in it with bearings in it, do not pick it up. It is a bomb.""I had no idea it was a bomb. It just blew up in my face", Michael said.
"The tiniest powder, right, it goes into a huge flame. Right. And that was a golf ball, packed."He said the blast happened after he went to a nearby house with friends."Basically we all went around there. My mate was sitting there he said 'Oh Michael, check this out - I wasn't lying - I found heroin in a golf ball'.""He picks it out and puts it on this table and everyone was sitting there saying 'snort the shit Michael, I'll do it if you do it'."
"I was like 'no freaking way man, you do it, and then I'll probably do it'.'"But none of them did it. What I usually could do is make them snort it and then I don't snort it or whatever.""But they didn't snort it, neither did I luckily. He put it on the table and I walked over, picked it up, had a look at it."He goes: 'I'll sell it to you for $5'. Oh yeah, a smoke sorry. 'I'll sell it to you for a smoke' right."I roll him a smoke and I give it to him.""He sold it to me. I was just sitting there playing with it. I was chucking it around and the next minute 'boom'.""I was shaking it up a little bit. I didn't know it would blow up.""I couldn't see for two seconds, and I couldn't hear for two seconds.""And then I looked at my hands and I was like 'tell me this is a dream, please tell me this is a dream'.
""There was just all of this, hung down, and all of this skin."He said he had known the other youth for "ages".His mother Rebecca Boggan said: "He has got a little finger on his left hand, that's it. And he has got a thumb on his right. They've managed to reconstruct and pin the index and the middle finger."The ring finger took a big swipe, I don't know how much of that is left. They don't know if the other two fingers are going to stay and not get infected. He's going in for surgery tomorrow morning.TRAGIC: A Facebook image of golf ball bomb victim Michael Boggan (inset) and his stepdad Mick Clifton."He's got shrapnel wounds all over his body."He's very up on medication at the moment."He's got holes in his legs, right down to his bones, from the ball bearings. He's got shrapnel wounds on his arms. And his hands are gone.

"I would like to see this boy charged with whatever offences."I know from a few other adult witnesses, that the main perpetrator was showing this golf ball around a few houses in Leichhardt in the morning."Michael believes (the other youth) he found it on the side of the road shortly before the incident happened. But we don't think that's true. The scene of a bomb explosion at Leichhardt near Ipswich. Picture: Roberston Marc"He went out to play and I just keep thinking about the what-ifs. What if I made him stay home and do the house work he was supposed to do. What if I had done this If I had done that. It may not have happened."Apparently him and his friends were sitting at the table and the perpetrator came into the yard."He sat down at the table and said to Michael 'look at this it's full of drugs', and threw it at him.A police officer collects evidence at the scene of the Ipswich blast. Police and a bystander at the scene of yesterday's explosion at Ipswich. PIC: Marc RoberstonIpswich Mayor Paul Pisasale this morning said the boy had spoken for the first time since the incident."He has just come out surgery and he has related he was sitting around the table with a few boys and some young boy ... who has always been a bully to him has thrown some sort of golf ball explosive device at him and it has exploded."All I'm saying is this person needs to have some consequences for his actions because what he has done has sort of destroyed a young 15-year-old boy's life."Cr Pisasale said: "Michael said all the others (besides the one youth that threw the ball) are all innocent."Stepdad Michael Clifton said Michael had been shopping earlier in the day before the tragedy and had bought a slow cooker as a present for Mother's Day."We were out doing shopping - we had just bought his mother a Mother's Day present."It's the last thing he'll ever carry."Mr Clifton said he had been told another similar homemade device had been in the community previously. He said Michael had been bullied in the neighbourhood for about three years."He would come home sometimes and he had been in fights with other kids and he's come home angry ... because no one liked him and they just kept treating him like crap."One of them didn't like him and this is what happens."Mr Clifton said he did not know the 17-year-old accused of throwing the device and had not spoken to Michael's school about the bullying."We never thought it would come to this," he said.Mr Clifton said there had been bullying on Facebook in the past "and we put a stop to it, straight up."He said his son did not have the "wherewithal" to make a bomb."He never learnt anything about that and we monitor his Internet."Mr Clifton said he was told people in the community knew about the homemade bomb earlier in the day."I'd just like to see justice done," he said."If he has done wrong punish him (the boy who allegedly threw the device)."He has been in trouble with the law heaps of times before and they just don't punish these kids."Michael - who today was in a stable condition in hospital - had just finished Mother's Day shopping with his stepfather yesterday when he went to visit a friend in Dampier St but ended up across the street in another home's backyard. What followed, his family said, was a horrific incident that should never have happened."Some kids had been boasting about this golf ball all morning . . . then they threw it at him," his mother said."He wasn't involved, they weren't his friends."Michael, 15, suffers from autism and Asperger syndrome and attends Ipswich High three days a week."He tries to make friends with these kids but gets bullied," the boy's mum Rebecca said.Mr Clifton said he was still in shock."These teenagers have no moral compass," he said.Michael underwent emergency surgery at the Princess Alexandra Hospital overnight in the hope of saving part of one of his hands.Three other teens, aged between 15 and 18, were also hurt and taken to Ipswich hospital.Police inspector Keith McDonald said those believed to be involved had not been "forthcoming" in providing information about the incident. The family said they had been wanting to move from the area for years but could not afford to."There are needles in the playground, we don't let our daughter play there anymore," Michael's mum said. They said their home on Light St had been egged and targeted by vandals, with gangs of teens running rampant and little police presence.Describing the boy as having a "heart of gold", his family said they were horrified, unsure what to do next.Police investigations are continuing.

Kid never had a father figure, so he never even learned how to ride one. Hopefully he succeeds in life. If he's willing to walk 6 miles to work at a McDonald's, he's already got a pretty good work ethic.

Charles Ramsey Talks To Anderson Cooper

Within hours of becoming a national hero, Charles Ramsey talked about having trouble getting
sleep. It wasn't because of all the excitement that followed his
knocking down a Cleveland neighbor's door, freeing three women and a
girl who police say were held hostage for years.

Instead, Ramsey told
CNN's Anderson Cooper on Tuesday, it was about knowing he had lived for
a year near the captive women on the city's West Side. "Up until
yesterday the only thing that kept me from losing sleep was the lack of
money," the restaurant dishwasher said on "Anderson Cooper 360."

"I could have done this last year, not this hero stuff," said Ramsey. "Just do the right thing."
Ramsey recounted Monday night's drama, when he heard a girl scream "like a car had hit a kid."
He
ran from his living room, clutching a half-eaten McDonald's Big Mac, to
the house and helped free a woman identified as Amanda Berry.

"Amanda said, 'I've been trapped in here. He won't let me out. It's me and my baby."
Who are the three women freed in Cleveland? Ramsey
and a man named Angel Cordero broke down the door, CNN affiliate WEWS
reported in an earlier interview heard around the world.
Ramsey told CNN he had never seen Berry before Monday, and at first, he could not place the name. "Berry didn't register with me until I was on the phone, like wait a minute, I thought this girl was dead." "She's like, 'This (expletive) kidnapped me and my daughter,'" he told the 911 operator, according to WEWS.

After
police arrived, Berry explained there were other women inside. When
police came out with them, Ramsey told the station, "it was
astonishing."
Berry was last seen after finishing her shift at a Burger King in Cleveland in 2003 on the eve of her 17th birthday. The
other two women are Georgina "Gina" DeJesus, who disappeared at age 14
in 2004, and Michelle Knight, who vanished in August 2002, at age 21,
according to police.
Ramsey told CNN he is no hero and should not receive any reward.
"You've
got to put that being a coward and 'I don't want to get in nobody's
business,'" he said. "You got to put that away for a minute." I barbecue with this dude' While
Ramsey's quick action in the largely rundown neighborhood made him a
hero, his colorful descriptions to WEWS helped make him dream fodder for
the Twitterverse.

Explaining that he had no idea Ariel Castro, his
neighbor, may have had other people inside his home, Ramsey said, "I've
been here a year. You see where I'm coming from? I barbecue with this
dude. We eat ribs and whatnot and listen to salsa music...

"He just
comes out to his backyard, plays with the dogs, tinkers with his cars
and motorcycles, goes back in the house. So he's somebody you look, then
look away. He's not doing anything but the average stuff. You see what
I'm saying? There's nothing exciting about him. Well, until today."
Castro "got some big testicles to pull this off, bro," Ramsey told WEWS. "Because we see this dude every day. I mean every day."

He
added, "I knew something was wrong when a little, pretty white girl ran
into a black man's arms. Something is wrong here. Dead giveaway."

In
one of the top tweets about Ramsey, comedian Patton Oswalt wrote, "Dear
Charles Ramsey: I am not a little pretty white girl, but I totally want
to run into your black arms.
