Tensions were high in Punjab Province's Okara district after provincial assembly seat candidate Mehr Abdul Sattar, sought by police in connection with a 2008 murder, on May 13 arranged for mosque calls for violence against Christian villages. "Burn their homes to the ground ... Punish them such that they forget Gojra and Joseph Colony," blared village mosques in the district, according to Younas Iqbal, chairman of the Anjuman-e-Mazareen Punjab, a peasant movement fighting for land rights. Iqbal told Morning Star News by phone that that when unofficial election results were announced on May 12, Sattar's supporters ambushed a convoy of about 100 Christians on their way to congratulate his opponent on his victory. "They destroyed two motorcycles and threw them in the canal, besides damaging a tractor," Iqbal said. "We went to the Okara Saddar Police Station to register a case, but the police officials refused to move against Mehr." Recent religious furor has been easily stoked in Pakistan. In Lahore on March 9, about 3,000 Muslims attacked Christians in Joseph Colony, destroying 175 homes, after rumors spread of an alleged remark against Islam by a Christian. In Gojra in 2009, eight Christians were burned alive, 100 houses looted and 50 homes set ablaze after a blasphemy accusation. Sattar has targeted Christians in several villages, designated by number-letter combinations from British colonial times, particularly village 8/4-L, for voting against him, Iqbal said. Christians largely voted for Mian Yawar Zaman, also a Muslim, for a provincial assembly seat in the general election on May 11. Iqbal said that early on May 13, Sattar's men prevented the Christian principal of the Government Primary School, Shamoun Masih, men from entering the institution. "They told Shamoun that since the Christians had voted against Mehr, he wouldn't be allowed inside," he said. "They also roughed him up, but there were no serious injuries. In 3/4-L village, Amjad Masih was harassed." Iqbal added that Sattar's supporters had also forcibly occupied land of some Christians. "The threat of violence in 8/4-L is most serious because of the tiny Christian population there," Iqbal said of the village of roughly 600 Christians. "Sensing the gravity of the situation, we immediately informed Zaman, the legislator-elect, who pressed the police to deploy personnel in the village." Okara Police Chief Rao Jabbar told Morning Star News that officers would take all necessary measures to protect the Christian peasants. "We have taken notice of the inciting speeches made by Mehr Abdul Sattar, and I have assured the Christians that we will initiate legal action against him," Jabbar said. "Meantime, I've directed all police officers concerned to remain vigilant and ensure that there is no damage to life and property of the Christians." Police have been helpless in the face of Sattar, though, Iqbal said. "Even though the district police chief has promised to protect the area's Christians, the danger will always remain there," he said. "Several cases have been registered against Mehr, but no action has been taken against him. In January this year, the police tried to arrest Mehr and his men in a murder case, but his supporters blocked three main highways for several hours, forcing the police to abandon action against him." Police sought Sattar in connection with the murder of Javed Masih, a Christian who had opposed Sattar in a 2008 election. "The late Javed Masih used to tell the peasants to vote according to their conscience and not get intimidated by gangsters like Mehr," Iqbal said. "His efforts bore fruit, and Mehr lost the general election in 2008. Unfortunately, Masih had to sacrifice his life for the cause, while several others were injured in an armed attack by Mehr's men." In this month's election, Iqbal likewise told Christians to vote for the person they thought best. Zaman belongs to the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, which has emerged as the single largest party in national and Punjab assemblies. "The humiliating defeat further stoked anger in Mehr, and he's now bent upon punishing us," he said, adding that Sattar has targeted no Muslims for opposing him. "Our application against Mehr Abdul Sattar is still pending with the police, but it seems more Christian blood will be shed before he is brought to justice," Iqbal said. "But this will not deter us from using our right to vote. We refuse to give in to the tyranny of criminals like Mehr." Besides village 8/4-L, the threatened Christian areas in provincial constituency PP-191 are village 10/4-L, with an estimated Christian population of 3,000; 11/4-L, where 2,000 Christians live; and 26/4-L, in which around 1,000 Christians are settled. The peasant land movement that became the issue of contention for Sattar arose more than 10 years ago in response to what Iqbal calls the Pakistan Army's illegal occupation of 64,000 acres in some 10 districts of Punjab. Catholic Capuchins had relocated Christians to the area of central Punjab Province to provide dairy products to the British Army during World War II, and the British turned the land over to the Pakistan Army when the sub-continent was partitioned, Iqbal said. "At the time of partition of the sub-continent, the Christians were not given the land rights which were promised to them by the Capuchin fathers," he said. "Because of this, Christians are at the forefront of the peasants' movement, which is facing the powerful Pakistan Army for their due right, as the Britons had handed over the lands to the Army after the partition." On May 11, one car bomb exploded outside the town hall, while another went off outside a post office in Reyhanli, a main hub for Syrian refugees and opposition activity in Hatay. Fifty-one people were killed and as many as 100 were injured in the bombings. On Monday morning, six suspects detained in the aftermath of the attack were referred to prosecutors at the Adana Courthouse for interrogation. At the end of the questioning, the prosecutors decided to release one of the suspects while the remaining five were arrested. Among the suspects arrested on Monday is Mehmet G., who was captured by the Hatay police last week. Mehmet G. is said to be the owner of the two vehicles that were blown up in the attack and allegedly carried out the deadly bombings, too. He is reportedly Turkish and comes from Hatay. In remarks to reporters on Tuesday, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he expects "all connections of the perpetrators of the Reyhanli attack to be discovered soon." "Twelve of the 18 suspects detained so far have been arrested. Initial information suggests that they are the main perpetrators in the attack," he said, adding that the ongoing investigation into the attack will shed light on all of the assailants' connections, including which organization or state they were supported by. Interior Minister Muammer G"uler said the police are working to find three other suspects in connection with the Reyhanli bombings. The suspects are believed to have rented a warehouse in which to hide the bomb-laden vehicles and to have smuggled the explosives into Turkey. Hatay Governor Mehmet Celalettin Lekesiz spoke to reporters about the ongoing investigation into the attack and said that 18 people have been detained so far in connection with it. "Security forces are carrying on their careful, detailed investigation," he stated and added that the police are working to capture additional suspects. According to the governor, those detained and the suspects on the run are Turkish citizens. "They are not Syrian citizens or Syrian refugees who are being hosted in our country," he stated. There were earlier claims that some Syrian refugees had been involved in the bomb attacks in Reyhanli. Lekesiz added that the remains of 50 victims killed in the attack have been returned to their families and buried. "Efforts are ongoing to determine the identity of one remaining victim," he said, adding that the victim had suffered serious burns in the explosions, making it hard to identity him. According to the governor, five of the 51 killed were Syrian refugees. Also on Monday, the Hatay Chief Public Prosecutor's Office announced that an investigation had been launched into public officials who are suspected of being negligent in preventing the Reyhanli bombings. "The investigation is being handled by our prosecutor's office," the office said, but did not elaborate on who is being investigated. "Everything began with my visit to Syria with Yusuf B. in September of 2012. Yusuf B. helped me meet with Ural four or five times in Latakia," Yusuf N. told prosecutors. Some police sources say the order for the bombings came from Ural, who is from Turkey but lives in Syria. Ural is a long-time fugitive wanted by Turkish law enforcement agencies. He commanded a large-scale massacre committed by Syrian regime forces in Banias, a predominantly Sunni city on the Mediterranean coast of Syria. Being a leader of the THKP-C and its deadly splinter faction, Acilciler, which was established in the 1970s, Ural is also remembered as a figure who initiated anti-Turkey meetings in the southern province of Hatay last year. Hysen Sherifi, 29, was one of six Raleigh-area Muslims convicted in 2011 of planning to attack the Marine base in Quantico, Va., and overseas targets. Shortly after starting his 45-year prison sentence in the terror case, Sherifi approached another inmate to help him hire a hit man to behead government informants and FBI agents. He recruited his younger brother Shkumbin Sherifi, 23, and former special education teacher Nevine Aly Elshiekh, 48, to help pay the hit man and organize the murders. But the inmate whose help Sherifi sought turned out to be yet another government informant. FBI agents then staged an elaborate sting that involved secretly videotaped meetings with a woman posing as the go-between for a fictional hit man named Treetop and doctored photos that appeared to show the corpse of a beheaded witness in a shallow grave. Federal prosecutors recommended leniency for the two coconspirators, who pleaded guilty last year and agreed to testify at the elder Sherifi's trial on nine felony counts. Citing their extensive cooperation, U.S. District Senior Judge Earl sentenced the younger Sherifi to 3 years in prison, while Elshiekh got 3 1/2 years. They had faced as much as 10 years each. Before Hysen Sherifi was sentenced, he lectured the judge about Islamic teachings. "The Koran is the truth that invalidates all other religions," said Sherifi, who declined a court-appointed lawyer and represented himself at trial. "If you do not submit, he will severely judge you, and on the day of judgment you will enter hellfire." "That it?" asked Britt, who has served more than three decades on the federal bench. The judge then tacked the four life sentences onto the end of Sherifi's earlier 45-year prison term, along with another 50 years on top of that. "There can be no doubt Mr. Sherifi, the defendant in this case, meets the definition of a terrorist," Britt said. "He was the genesis of this conspiracy. He was the mastermind, though I'm hesitant to use that term because it affords him more credit than he is due." Noting that the defendant was unsuccessful in killing anyone, Britt said Sherifi's worst transgression was destroying the lives of his little brother Shkumbin and Elshiekh, with whom he had carried on a romantic dalliance from behind bars. Elshiekh, a U.S. citizen whose parents emigrated from Egypt, was a respected teacher of special-needs children who was also active as a youth leader at her Raleigh mosque. According to court testimony, she had just undergone a painful divorce from a cheating husband when she began attending Sherifi's 2011 terrorism trial. She later began visiting him regularly in jail. Dr. Emily Keram, a forensic psychiatrist hired by the defense, testified that Elshiekh was molested as a child by an uncle in Egypt and then trapped in an arranged marriage to a "con man" who later abandoned her to marry another woman. Elshiekh was prescribed several psychiatric drugs that impaired her ability to reason and made her pliable to the will of others, the psychiatrist said. At Hysen Sherifi's direction, Elshiekh gave a collection of gold jewelry given to her by her ex-husband to the younger brother, who pawned the pieces to raise the $5,000 he believed was needed to hire the hit man to execute the first victim. Elshiekh claimed she had no idea what the money was for until she followed her paramour's direction to meet with a woman in a parked car. The woman, an informant for the FBI, showed Elshiekh a photo of one of the targeted witnesses and asked her to confirm that was the first man to be killed. Though she then knew what the money was for, Elshiekh continued on with the plot for another 20 days until her arrest. In her early court appearances, Elshiekh wore a headscarf and a black dress that fully covered her arms and legs. On Friday, her long hair trailed down her back and she wore western clothes. In a tearful apology before the court on Friday, she accepted responsibility for what she had done. "I wish I could turn back time, but I can't do that," she told the judge. "I never wanted anyone to get hurt." Wearing shackles and a black Chicago T-shirt, Shkumbin Sherifi declined to address the judge before sentencing. The Sherifis are ethnic Albanians who fled Kosovo in 1999 during a brutal sectarian war with Serbs and ended up as refugees in Raleigh. Though Hysen gravitated toward a militant strain of Islam, his younger siblings acclimated more readily to life in America. Shkumbin went so far as to record an amateur rap album. Among those testifying Friday was one of the government witnesses Hysen Sherifi wanted dead. Melvin Weeks was a U.S. Army soldier serving in Kosovo after the war when he met the older Sherifi, who was visiting his grandparents. Weeks, a Muslim, said Sherifi praised Osama bin Laden and showed him jihadist videos that included a hostage being beheaded. Though an American bombing campaign had saved the ethnic Albanians from genocide just a few years earlier, Weeks said Sherifi called for holy war against the very nation that gave his family a new home. Her name unknown, my source telephoned me last week at 9:30 pm to tell me her story. At the first I thought it's just going to be a short conversation but later it was unveiled that the story is different. The story came from a village in Khashrood district of Nimruz province in Afghanistan. A medical doctor assigned in the main hospital in Zaranj city, the capital of the province, who wished to remain unnamed confirmed that he was "made aware" of the incident and that it was "too late to do anything for her" as well the "remote area didn't allow them to do anything". The girl was one of the several daughters of a man in his late 30s. For an unknown reason he gave his daughter to the Mullah of their village for a big amount of money. It is also common in Afghanistan's rural areas or 3rd level provinces/cities to marry young girls to old men, and trading their daughters for their debts or other items. The mullah is in his late 50s and is the mosque guy of the village where this incident happened. The mullah is already married and has many children too. The two families hold a tribal meeting, agree on the price that the groom's family pay to the bride's family, and they set a date for wedding. In rural areas like this here there are no engagements or any ceremonies beforehand like there are some in the metropolitan and urban areas. The two families planned a wedding party, the wedding and Nekah (The religious process in which a woman is officially married to a man) took place and the 8-years-old bride became the 50-years-old Mullah's 2nd wife. The celebration party was over and the sun downed - the time to have sex (not make love) with the 8-years-old bride. The girl was just 8 years old and everybody understands the fact that she knows nothing about sex or wedding or making love or virginity or sexual related topics; not even at a basic level for two reasons, one being that she's just a child - not even a teenager and that in that part of the country, nobody knows anything about these things nor they are given trainings or education about a healthy sexual life. The mullah takes off the bride's clothes as well as his owns and with apparent so much happiness approaches her for sexual intercourse with the 8-years-old bride. She bled and bled as herself was in trauma shock until morning and early in the morning around 5 when the sun was about to rise, she passed away. According to the Mullah, she was pale and her eyes were open when she died. The bed, as he described, was all red with her blood and she was lying in her blood only. No cloth beneath her was recognizable and everything was in dried blood because a whole night had passed on the blood. She was pale because she had lost all her body's blood.
