The rebel, who goes by the nom de guerre Abu Sakkar, has filmed a YouTube video explaining his actions. "I am willing to face trial for my actions if Bashar and his shabeeha stand trial for their atrocities," he says. "My message to the world is if the bloodshed in Syria doesn't stop, all of Syria will become like Abu Sakkar." The Syrian rebel, whose real name is Khalid al-Hamad, goes on to explain that he did what he did because of atrocities committed by pro-Assad fighters. He said that evidence taken from their cell phones showed how they raped women, killed children, and tortured men. In an article published this week by TIME magazine, the rebel fighter explained that he had a sectarian hatred of Alawites, and that he had made another video where he cuts up a pro-Assad fighter's body with a saw. Abu Sakkar's actions not only created controversy among observers of the conflict, but also prompted the Syrian rebel leadership to take action. The Free Syrian Army's Military Council released a statement condemning Abu Sakkar's "monstrous act," and instructed field commanders to being an investigation "in which the perpetrator will be brought to justice." So far, however, Abu Sakkar appears to still be on the battlefield. At the end of the video, the cameraman asks him whether he will continue fighting after this controversy. "Victory or martyrdom, I will fight to the death," he replies, then walks off down the road. Those NOM documents were published on the Huffington Post on March 30, 2012. At that time, Joe Solmonese, a left-wing activist and Huffington Post contributor , was the president of the Human Rights Campaign (HRC). Solmonese was also a 2012 Obama campaign co-chairman. Both the Huffington Post's Sam Stein and HRC described the leak as coming from a "whistleblower." The Huffington Post used the document to write a story questioning former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney's support for traditional marriage. The document showed Romney donated $10,000 to NOM. HRC went a step further than the Huffington Post in its criticism of Romney and accused him of using "racially divisive tactics" in a press release. Solmonese, then still the HRC's president, said in the release he felt Romney's "funding of a hate-filled campaign designed to drive a wedge between Americans is beyond despicable." "Not only has Romney signed NOM's radical marriage pledge, now we know he's one of the donors that NOM has been so desperate to keep secret all these years," Solmonese added. Solmonese resigned his position at HRC the next day and took up a position as an Obama campaign co-chair. He had announced the then-pending resignation from HRC the previous autumn. NOM announced Tuesday that it will sue the IRS for this alleged leak. Under immense political pressure, Attorney General Eric Holder launched a criminal investigation into the IRS's actions. In early April 2012, NOM published documents which it said showed this leaked confidential information did not come from a "whistleblower" but "came directly from the Internal Revenue Service and was provided to NOM's political opponents, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC)." NOM discovered that when HRC published its confidential financial documents, it failed to conceal the source of the documents. "After software removed the layers obscuring the document, it is shown that the document came from the Internal Revenue Service," NOM asserted in its April 2012 release. "The top of each page says, 'THIS IS A COPY OF A LIVE RETURN FROM SMIPS. OFFICIAL USE ONLY,'" the statement continues. "On each page of the return is stamped a document ID of '100560209.' His fellow rebels have called for him to be arrested or killed for the act. Human rights groups have condemned him. But Al Hamad has no regrets. In an interview conducted via Skype in the early hours of May 14 al Hamad explained to TIME what caused him to cut out the soldier's organs: "We opened his cell phone and I found a clip of a woman and her two daughters fully naked and he was humiliating them, and sticking a stick here and there." The video, a 27-second clip in which al Hamad brandishes organs that appear to be the lungs and heart of the Syrian soldier who lies dead at al Hamad's feet, was first seen by two TIME reporters in April. A few weeks later TIME obtained a copy. Though we had been told by witnesses to the filming that the video was legitimate, we set about authenticating its content, aware of the potential that it could have been faked for propaganda purposes. Al Hamad has now confirmed that the video is real, and that he did indeed take a bite of the soldier's lung. (At the time of the filming, al Hamad believed that he was biting into the liver. A surgeon who has seen the video confirms that the organ in question was a lung, which somewhat resembles the liver). On May 12, a copy of the video appeared on a pro-regime website, sparking a flood of Facebook "shares" and YouTube views. Al Hamad, who is Sunni and harbors a sectarian hatred for Alawite Muslims, said he has another gruesome video of his killing a government soldier from the Alawite faith. Al Hamad also explained that even though both sides of the conflict in Syria are using video clips of their own brutal actions to intimidate the other he believes that his clip would have particular impact on the regime's troops. "They film as well but after what I did hopefully they will never step into the area where Abu Sakkar is," he said, using his nom de guerre and referring to the part of Syria he currently controls. Human Rights Watch, which validated the video, released a report on May 13 identifying Khalid al Hamad as a well known commander responsible for the recent cross-border shelling of a Shiite Lebanese village that killed two. The organization called on the United Nations Security Council to refer the Syria situation to the International Criminal Court to ensure accountability for all war crimes and crimes against humanity. "It is not enough for Syria's opposition to condemn such behavior or blame it on violence by the government," said Nadim Houry, HRW's Deputy Middle East Director. "The opposition forces need to act firmly to stop such abuses." Al Hamad lashed out at HRW and the UN for focusing on opposition abuses when the regime is responsible for similar atrocities. During the interview, he sent links to YouTube videos purporting to show regime abuses. "Why doesn't the UN make an appeal for the Shabiha not to do that? The Shabiha themselves posted a million clips of them stabbing and raping." Al Hamad, who has been fighting on the frontlines near the strategic town of Qusayr for the past week, says that the video captures the first time he had ever attempted to eat an enemy's liver. He indicated that the brutality of the regime had driven him to extremes. "You are not seeing what we are seeing and you are not living what we are living. Where are my brothers, my friends, the girls of my neighborhood who were raped? May God bless them all." The Supreme Military Council, which according to the leadership oversees about 90% of the fighting groups in Syria, has issued a poster-circulated on Facebook-calling for al Hamad's arrest, saying it wants him "dead or alive." In response, supporters have posted stylized portraits of al Hamad cradling a rifle. "We Love You," reads the inscription. Al Hamad pointed out in the interview that the revolution started as a peaceful uprising more than two years ago. "They were the ones who killed our children in Baba Amr and raped our women," he said, referring to the site of a ferocious battle in the city of Homs that took place in February of 2012. Then, referring to the recent massacre of Sunni villagers near the coastal village of Baniyas that has been attributed by rebel groups to the regime, he adds, "They were the ones who slaughtered the children and women in Bayda . During the energy crisis of the 80's he founded and ran a company that specialized in energy efficient homes. For eight years he was a professor at Tennessee State University in the Engineering School. Dr. Warner has had a life-long interest in religion and its effects on history. He has studied the source texts of the major religions for decades. Even before the destruction of the World Trade Center he had predicted the war between Islam and America. The day after 9/11 he decided to make the source texts of Islam available for the average person. Dr. Warner's training in scientific theory and mathematics shaped how he analyzed Islamic doctrine. The great majority, 96%, of all Islamic doctrine about women subjugates them. . The Sunna (what Mohammed did and said) is more important than the Koran in a Muslim's daily life. Dr. Warner coined the term, Foundational School of Islamic studies, which holds that Islam is found in the Trilogy of Koran, Sira and Hadith. All evaluation of Islamic history and current activity is caused by the doctrine found in this Trilogy. Therefore, it is impossible to understand any Muslim or Islamic action without knowing the doctrine that is its cause. Dr. Warner postulates that there are three independent views of Islam that are not reconcilable. The three views are believer-centric, apoligist-centric and Kafir-centric. The believer-centric view is the view of a Muslim. Apologist-centric is based upon the apologetic view of non-Muslims. Kafir-centric is the view of the non-Muslim. A comprehensive knowledge of Islam must include all three. These views cannot be resolved, but each must stand-alone. Dr. Warner founded the Center for the Study of Political Islam (CSPI) and is its director. He has produced a dozen books, including a Koran, a biography of Mohammed and a summary of the political traditions of Mohammed. He also developed the first self-study course on Political Islam. The Trilogy Project The Trilogy Project was developed to make Islam's three sacred texts, Koran, Sira and Hadith understandable. It was based upon scientific principles and objective methods, so that any independent person could achieve the same results if they used the same methods. All Islamic doctrine is based on words of Allah and the Sunna (words and actions) of Mohammed. Allah is found in the Koran and Mohammed is found in the Sira (biography) and the Hadith (traditions). All of Islam is based on Koran, Sira, and Hadith. If it is in the Trilogy, it is Islam. If it is not in the Trilogy, then it is not Islam. To know Islam, know the Trilogy. The problem in knowing the Trilogy is that the Koran, Sira and Hadith were designed to be difficult to understand. There is only one way for them to be understood-they must be viewed as a systemic whole, not three separate books. The books had to be fact-based and self-authenticating. In a sense, each book had to be a map to the original text. Nearly every paragraph in the CSPI book series has a reference number that allows the reader to go to the source text and verify what is written. If you don't believe it or want more details, you can go the reference number and read the original. Here is an example from Mohammed and the Unbelievers, the Sira: I552 The assassins' wounded friend lagged behind, so they carried him back with them. When they got back to Mohammed, he was praying. They told him they had killed the enemy of Allah and their attack had terrorized all the Jews. There was no Jew in Medina who was not afraid. He spat upon our comrade's wounds, and both he and we returned to our families. Our attack upon God's enemy cast terror among the Jews, and there was no Jew in Medina who did not fear for his life. The Hadith, collected by Bukhari, has over 6800 traditions. The text is confusing since there is so much repetition. The same tradition may be repeated a dozen times. Only about a quarter of the traditions relate to politics, the rest are purely religious. The first step is to collect all the traditions that deal with Kafirs. The Kafir material is political, since it deals with those outside of Islam. Then all of those that are similar, or nearly identical, are summarized into a single tradition. This method makes all of the political traditions easily understood. The remaining traditions apply only to Muslims and are of little interest to Kafirs. Collecting those traditions that apply to Kafirs and summarizing the repeated ones clarifies the text and makes Political Islam simple to understand. This work resulted in The Political Traditions of Mohammed. The Koran is made readable by reproducing the historical Koran of Mohammed's day. This is accomplished by arranging the Koran in the original order (the one in the bookstore is arranged in order of chapter length). Then the similar sections are combined (for instance, the story of Moses is told 39 times). The final step is to take Mohammed's life from the Sira and integrate it into the Koran verses to give the verses context. These steps reproduce the historical Koran. The resulting document is now easily read, A Simple Koran. Anyone can take these same steps and produce similar versions of the original Trilogy. People assume that you must understand Arabic or have a university degree in Islam to understand Islam's texts. However, look at these scholars' history. After 1400 years they have produced scholarly papers for presentations at scholarly meetings, but they have not made the material available to the common person. The work stands on its own. The only person that matters in discussing Islam is not the "expert" but Mohammed. Every paragraph of our books is referenced to what Mohammed did and said (his Sunna). So Britain will get a new press regulator, established by Royal Charter, but underpinned by a law that will make it difficult to change the way the new body operates. A Royal Charter is a declaration by the monarch granting powers and privileges to an entity. Think the BBC, the Bank of England, or the East India Company. Regulating newspapers by charter was part of the strange compromise struck among the Tories, Liberal Democrats and Labour in the wee hours Monday. The Lib Dems and Labour want a new press regulator established through legislation, with all the muscle that implies. Prime Minister David Cameron opposed a statutory regulator but faced possible defeat in Parliament on this point. Angst is still high in Westminster over the need to "do something" about a press corps supposedly run amok in the phone-hacking scandals. Some are deriding a Royal Charter as a "medieval" institution. Since you have to go back to the 17th century to find a time when the Crown licensed newspaper publishers, the throwback analogy seems apt. This new press regulator is anachronistic in other ways too. Politicians are already arguing over the extent to which Internet blogs would fall under its sway, though membership is supposed to be voluntary. Some of Britain's most prominent bloggers want no part of it. Paul Staines, who blogs under the nom de plume Guido Fawkes, hosts his blog offshore. Even his mobile phone is offshore. Scotland, meanwhile, is asking what this means for the Scottish press. Press regulation is supposed to be a devolved power, say the Scots. So perhaps this will prove to be the Royal Society for the Regulation of the Ink-Stained Wretches of England and Wales. Or just England? It's still unclear, which is what happens when you cook up a scheme in a back room at 2:30 in the morning. Geography aside, the new regulator won't even supervise more than a small fraction of media choices available to Britons, especially online. Today's newspapers compete for readers with other newspapers as well as with the websites of innumerable television stations (including the BBC), foreign media and international papers like this one. Yet the new press-regulation device seems tailored to control newspapers that are already under financial pressure. The Charter's final terms are still being worked out and may not be finalized for months. Newspaper owners, understandably, want some say in who will run what is supposed to be a self-regulatory body. Campaigners for regulation want self-regulation performed exclusively by others. Yet on Monday the Parliament overwhelmingly passed an amendment that will set the Charter's terms in stone once they are finalized. This does not leave room for adjusting to a rapidly changing media marketplace. The Parliament also envisions punitive damages in civil cases against any paper that refuses to join. So a supposedly voluntary operation begins with the threat of ruinous judgments against those who don't sign up. All of this new machinery for media control is being set up even as the current laws are proving to be more than adequate for handling the phone-hacking scandal. Charges have been brought for alleged crimes, and civil cases against newspaper publishers (including our ultimate owner, News Corp NWSA -0.86% .) are being settled, or taken to trial in some cases.
