Mayors Against Illegal Guns, the group co-founded by Bloomberg, had targeted Pryor and other senators in a multimillion-dollar ad campaign in late March ahead of the vote. Angela Bradford-Barnes, former chief financial officer for the Arkansas Democratic Party, says in the ad that a friend was shot to death and that she was "heartbroken" by Pryor's vote. Bill Gwatney, at the time chairman of the Arkansas Democratic Party, was shot to death in 2008. "This bill may not be perfect, and it cannot undue my tragic loss, but if it stops even one person from causing this pain to another family, it's worth it," Bradford-Barnes says in the ad. Pryor denounced the new ad in a statement Friday and invoked Gwatney, whose name was not mentioned in the TV ad. Pryor said the Senate gun bill would not have adequately addressed gun violence caused by people with mental health issues and noted he voted for separate legislation that would have done so. But critics have seized on a commentHolder made last week, asking if the attorney general misled Congress. The Obama administration has been criticized for reportedly seizing Rosen's emails and phone records, and for tracking his movement in and out of the State Department through security-badge records, as it investigated possible leaks of information about North Korea. Last week's Washington Post report added fuel to an already controversial time for the Justice Department, which seized phone records of Associated Press reporters and offices. In a statement on Friday, the Justice Department said the Rosen investigation had been approved "at the highest levels" of the Justice Department, including "discussions with the Attorney General." Here's how the department explained its decision to investigate Rosen, in a background statement: The Department takes seriously the First Amendment right to freedom of the press. In recognition of this, the Department took great care in deciding that a search warrant was necessary in the Kim matter, vetting the decision at the highest levels of the Department, including discussions with the Attorney General. After extensive deliberations, and after following all applicable laws, regulations and policies, the Department sought an appropriately tailored search warrant under the Privacy Protection Act. And a federal magistrate judge made an independent finding that probable cause existed to approve the search warrant. Attorney General Holder understands the concerns that have been raised by the media and has initiated a reevaluation of existing Department policies and procedures. But he also said that he had never been aware of potential prosecutions of reporters. "Well, I would say this. With regard to the potential prosecution of the press for the disclosure of material, that is not something that I've ever been involved in, heard of or would think would be a wise policy," Holder said, responding to Georgia Democratic Rep. Hank Johnson's suggestion that reporters' First Amendment rights should be protected. The Rosen leak was part of another prosecution - of the alleged leaker - but the Justice Department did suggest, in seeking a warrant for Rosen's G-mail account, that he may have broken the law. Hassan who was notified of his father's death in the battles upon his arrival to his hometown said that Hezbollah fighters advanced toward the northern part of the city, when the opposition fighters came out of the tunnels and opened fire against them "seemingly out of nowhere". Hassan said the resistance put up by rebels in al-Qusayr had taken him and his comrades by surprise. "On the first day, we advanced through the alleyways towards the center of al-Qusayr, we did not see any fighters from the Syrianopposition; we thought they were not there and then suddenly the rebels attacked us from behind. Many lives were lost and several were injured by gunshots " Hassan said. Hassan revealed that the hardest mission for Hezbollah is to take control of the northern part of the town, where the opposition fighters are barricaded, noting that snipers are also widespread in the area. Hezbollah forces were organized into 17 units of 100 men each, before storming the city from the east, south and west, a source close to the group said. The town, which lies near the border with Lebanon, is home to some 25,000 people, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. On Monday, June 25th 2012, the following occurred: The Supreme Court unanimously yes, UNANIMOUSLY, upheld the portion of Arizona's Immigration Law that directs law enforcement officers to check the immigration status of EVERYONE who is ARRESTED for a crime. It not just "ALLOWS" them to check, but "DIRECTS" them to check. That means it's mandatory. Less than three hours later, the President of the United States issued an executive order BLOCKING THE ENTIRE STATE OF ARIZONA'S ACCESS to the Federal Database that would allow such checks. The only State or Local entity EVER to be blocked. One hour after that (which means they had it all ready in advance), the Department of Justice went live with a toll-free number, a web site, and ads, ASKING FOR PEOPLE TO REPORT BEING RACIALLY PROFILED because of this ruling, so they, THE U.S. JUSTICE DEPARTMENT, can file Civil Rights lawsuits against the Police Departments, Sheriffs, Cities, Counties and State of Arizona. The compromise plan now goes to the State Senate for a vote. Gun owners in the only state still banning concealed weapons would win that right under a plan approved by the Illinois House on Friday, but the governor and other powerful Democrats oppose the plan because it would wipe out local gun ordinances -- including Chicago's ban on assault weapons. The proposal was brokered by House Speaker Michael Madigan, a Chicago Democrat, as a way to abide by a federal appeals court's ruling that ordered the state to adopt a concealed-carry law by June 9. But the plan has drawn strong opposition, with Gov. Pat Quinn calling it a "massive overreach" because of the way it would curb local firearms regulations. Chief among those regulations is Chicago's ban on assault-style weapons, which would be stricken from the books. That's a deal-breaker for Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who backs tough restrictions to curb gun violence in the nation's third largest city. "This legislation is wrong for Illinois. It was wrong yesterday in committee, it's wrong today, and it's wrong for the future of police." Quinn said in a statement after the House vote. "The principle of home rule is an important one. As written, this legislation is a massive overreach that would repeal critical gun safety ordinances," he said. "I will not support this bill and I will work with members of the Illinois Senate to stop it in its tracks." The measure would require Illinois State Police to issue a permit to any applicant who has a Firearm Owners Identification card, completes required training and background check, and pays a $150 fee. But it significantly broadens the places where guns would be prohibited, including mass-transit buses and trains, which was a demand of Chicago Democrats. The legislation is being sponsored by Rep. Brandon Phelps, a southern Illinois Democrat and ardent gun-rights supporter whose more permissive plan failed by seven votes last month. Madigan stepped in after that failed vote, and the resulting plan would pre-empt any city or county gun regulation, such as taxes on gun sales or requirements for reporting lost or stolen guns. Phelps and Madigan argue that it would be best to have one statewide law to reduce confusion and have future restrictions get state legislators' approval in Springfield. But Quinn's office said the pre-emption would jeopardize public safety. The legislation also is opposed by Senate President John Cullerton, a Chicago Democrat like Quinn and Madigan. "It's an overreach .The governor's opposed to it. The mayor's opposed to it. I'm going to work very hard to defeat this." Senate President John Cullerton spoke to FOX 32 by, satellite shortly after the Illinois House voted 85 to 30 to permit people to carry concealed, loaded firearms. Cullerton's anger was aimed at the bill's other main provision, repealing every current local gun law, something federal courts have not ordered. The House Sponsor, though, argued that Illinois's patchwork of local laws amount to an infringement on the Constitution's Second Amendment. "The law-abiding gun owner traveling through the state is not going to know from one town to another what is expected of them," Rep. Brandon Phelps says. "So, what you're doing is you're making law-abiding gun owners criminals." Cullerton predicted the Senate next week would pass concealed carry rules virtually identical to what the House passed Friday. But he said the senate would not agree to the House bill's attempt to repeal local communities' gun control laws. "This is a bill that wipes a number of laws that have been passed by local jurisdictions," Cullerton says. "In fact, it's so broad that one could argue that you couldn't even deal with zoning for gun shops. If they wanted to come into your town, you couldn't even deny them zoning. That's how broad this is. And it wipes out a number of well-thought out ordinances passed by a number of municipalities." Cullerton said he hopes the General Assembly will meet the June 9 deadline set by a federal court to establish rules for concealed carry, but if no statewide compromise is achieved, he said he expects Cook County and other local communities to enact rules of their own. The legislation was forced by a 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruling in December that decreed the state's ban on concealed carry unconstitutional.
