New excavations to find lost Pictish kingdom

By FRANK URQUHART
Published on 10/05/2013 01:59 ARCHAEOLOGISTS are planning a major dig to uncover one of the lost Kingdoms of the ancient Picts, the tribe of legendary warriors whose empire stretched from Fife to the Moray Firth before they mysteriously vanished from history.

Until recently historians had believed that Fortriu - one of the most powerful Kingdoms of the "painted people" - had been based in Perthshire.

But recent research has now placed the Pictish stronghold much further north to the Moray Firth area.

And it was revealed today that a team of archaeologists from Aberdeen University are to embark on a series of excavations on the Tarbat peninsula in Ross-shire where archaeologists have already uncovered evidence of the only Pictish monastic settlement found in Scotland to date.

A spokesman for Aberdeen University said: "The new project will explore for the first time the archaeology of the most powerful kingdom of the Picts - the kingdom of Fortriu. Over the next four years a programme of fieldwork will target the rich archaeological resource that the Picts and the Kingdom of Fortriu left behind."

He continued:"As part of an exciting new collaboration, the results of the archaeological work will be displayed at the Tarbat Discovery Centre, which currently displays the results of one of the biggest ever Pictish site excavations - the Pictish monastery at Portmahomack which is thought to be one of the major early churches of the Kingdom of Fortriu."

Dr Gordon Noble, the director of the Fortriu project, said: "We are incredibly excited about our new links with the Tarbat Discovery Centre and our exciting new initiative on the archaeology of the Tarbat peninsula and wider environs.

"Excavations at Portmahomack uncovered an incredibly rich record of a Pictish monastery in the 7th-9th centuries AD. Our work will put the monastery in its wider context, investigating for the first time the archaeology of the Pictish Kingdom of Fortriu, the most powerful Pictish kingdom that had its powerbase in the Moray Firth region."

He added: "It combines fieldwork research investigating the emergence of the early kingdoms of Scotland with initiatives that will allow the Discovery Centre to continue to showcase research on the Picts and the heritage of the Tarbat peninsula to a wide audience."

Further exploration

The team of archaeologists also plan to examine the Pictish cross slabs found at Shandwick, Hilton and Nigg in an attempt to understand the power structures that led to the formation of the early Pictish kingdoms.

Preliminary excavations of a hill fort at Easter Rarichie in Ross and Cromarty have already revealed a remarkable stone-walled structure that may be an important settlement dating to the Iron Age or Pictish period.

Tony Watson, the chairman of Tarbat Discovery Centre said: "The importance of the carved stones is already well-known but they didn't happen just in isolation but were part of a far bigger picture that started centuries before the monks and Christianity arrived in Portmahomack.

"These are really exciting times for the Centre and the wider area and this long-term research programme should bring many unknown and neglected sites to a wider audience."

It was revealed two months ago that a recently discovered DNA marker suggests that 10 per cent of Scottish men are directly descended from the Picts. Known as "'Picti'" by the Romans 'Painted Ones' in Latin - the empire of Pictish tribes constituted the largest kingdom in Dark Age Scotland. They repelled the conquests of both Romans and Angles before disappearing from history by the end of the first millennium .

The Picts took part in one of the most decisive battles in Scottish history - the Battle of Dun Nechtain , also known as the Battle of Nechtansmere - when the Picts defeated the Northumbrian forces of King Ecgfrith.

Historians have claimed that the Pictish triumph laid the foundations for a distinctive Scottish state, which endured until the Act of Union in 1707.

Harrods refuses to allow six women dressed in Welsh national costume into the store on St David's Day

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2288998/Harrods-refuses-allow-women-dressed-Welsh-national-costume-store-St-Davids-Day.html

Security officer thought costumes clashed with store's dress code
Group, including doctor and lawyer, wore tall black hats and white aprons
Harrods apologises for blunder and women allowed in after security checks

Dress codes are normally the preserve of restaurants and nightclubs.

But exclusive shop Harrods refused six women shoppers to enter because they were dressed in the Welsh national costume - which a security officer thought clashed with the store's dress code.

The proud Welshwomen went for a London shopping day on St David's Day dressed in their traditional tall black hats, red skirts and white aprons.

But their festive costumes were met with an unimpressed security officer at the door who told them: 'You can't come in here dressed like that.'

The six close friends in hand-made traditional costumes donned the outfits last Friday to mark March 1 - the day when the Welsh mark their patron saint St David.

But the six including a doctor, an NHS manager, a lawyer and a fashion designer.were turned away by the Knightsbridge store.
Harrods yesterday apologised for the blunder - and the women were allowed in later after security checks.

Trip organiser Gaynor Newton, 56, said: 'We were gobsmacked - we were smartly dressed and well behaved on our national day.

'The first woman security officer who stopped us was quite rude and just said we could not enter the store because we were in our national costume.

'As we stood there an Asian woman in a sari and an African woman in lovely colourful robes both entered the store without a problem.'
The six travelled from Bridgend, South Wales, to London for a theatre break weekend.

But part of their itinerary was a glass of bubbly in Harrods' champagne bar.

The women had spent more than lb200 each on their traditional Welsh costumes to celebrate St David's Day in the capital.

Gaynor said: 'We were told the store does not allow customers in national costumes.

'We are all professional people and we looked smart in our costumes

'Everywhere we went people were happy to see us and wanted their photographs taken with us.

'Until we got to Harrods where we were shocked by the way the staff treated us.'

They complained to security guards - and were sent to another entrance where a waiting customer service assistant also refused to let them in.

It was only when the women protested that they were being racially discriminated against that he backed down.

The women were eventually let in but say the store's anti national costume policy tarnished their day.

Gaynor, a manager at the Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend, said: 'The staff inside the shop were marvellous and a bit upset that security had stopped us.

'We went to other places including the Victoria and Albert Museum and everybody welcomed us.

'I would like to know why Harrods picked on us.'

Knitwear designer Denise Evans, 50, who was part of the group, said: 'I couldn't believe it - we are British citizens who were wearing our national costume on the day of our patron saint.

'Would they stop a Scotsman from entering Harrods in his kilt? I don't think so.'

Harrods today apologised saying it was a misunderstanding and the women from Wales were welcome.

A spokesperson said: 'The security guard asked for the group to wait while she double-checked it was in keeping with our dress code.

'The women didn't want to wait and went to another entrance where they were admitted, as by that time the security team were aware they were wearing national dress.

'We certainly did not deny them entry and always welcome all visitors in national costume.

'We apologise for any confusion and hope they went on to have an enjoyable visit.'

while on a Promotional Tour of Australia the Flying Scotsman took part in many steam galas, this one to Alice Springs. In places the sound has deteriorated unfortunately. the other two locomotives are R761 and R707 , in the last run you can see the FS is not leaking steam at the pistons or elsewhere, it's still tight after all this time, all though it has been maintained in first-class condition for insurance purposes. The steam seen billowing out of the injectors is a natural blow-off.

The world's favourite steam locomotive, the Flying Scotsman, was the star attraction once again at the National Railway Museum in York at the end of May. The locomotive has been away from the public for the last five years undergoing a complete overhaul and went on display in its all-black wartime colours - though it will soon be painted in its more usual green livery.

The Flying Scotsman was the first steam engine to be recorded breaking the 100 mph speed barrier and has been a firm favourite with the public ever since. For 40 years this A3 Gresley Pacific steam locomotive plied the east coast line between London and Edinburgh, clocking up around 2 million miles before being gracefully retired in 1963. Between then and now it has had several different owners and an eventful life - travelling the world and setting records in the process - in 1989 it set a record of 422 miles for the longest steam non-stop journey across Australia.

JUST five weeks ago he was a carefree holidaymaker enjoying an extended break amid the glories of the New England countryside.

Michael Nicholson, a painter and decorator from Livingston, West Lothian, had flown into Boston airport and spent the last few days of his American vacation fishing with family and friends on a river in New Hampshire.

Now 35-year-old Michael is in a coma in an Edinburgh hospital and, if he lives, is expected, at best, to be severely disabled for the rest of his life.

While in New Hampshire, Michael was bitten by a mosquito carrying the virus which causes Eastern Equine (horse) Encephalitis, also known as Triple E.

The condition is well known in the eastern states of the US, where Triple E, because of its high mortality rate, is regarded as one of the most serious mosquito-borne diseases on the North American continent. Michael is now believed to be the first confirmed case of the disease in Europe.

But Michael's family are concerned that the thousands of British tourists who travel to the popular New England area every year are given no official health warnings about mosquito-related Triple E.

Michael's sister, Sharan McKenzie, said she had decided to speak out about her brother to warn other US holidaymakers to take precautions.

"There is no cure for this so the only thing that can be done is prevention," Sharan said. "We are very surprised that there is no warning whatsoever given by the Foreign Office of this problem in the United States.

"I'm sure that most people are like me in thinking that if you are bitten by a mosquito in the US it's the same as somewhere like Spain - irritating but not life-threatening.

"Triple E may be a rare condition but, as Michael's case shows, it can happen to anyone. Most tourists will never have heard of it."

Michael, a Hearts supporter, travelled to the US in July to spend six weeks with relatives in Rhode Island. "He was just an ordinary guy who enjoyed spending time with his family," said Sharan. "He enjoyed playing guitar, loved his music, doing crosswords and sudoku and often went fishing.

"He wasn't working at the time, which gave him the opportunity to go out to the US for such a long period and he was absolutely delighted."

Michael travelled with his American cousins to their family log cabin on the Saco River in northern New Hampshire.

Unbeknown to Michael, who celebrated his 35th birthday in the US, there have been two cases of Triple E confirmed in New Hampshire this year. Both cases, a 13-year-old boy and a 69-year-old man, also remain in hospital.

Michael returned to Boston for the flight home on Thursday, August 30, and was picked up by Sharan at Glasgow airport. She said: "He was feeling tired but nothing unusual. He was talking about what a great time he had had and how he'd been fishing, which he loves to do.

"On the way home he mentioned he had been bitten by mosquitoes. He had bites around his ankles and they looked red and raw but we didn't really think that much of it."

Sharan dropped him at his Livingston home. The next morning she received a call to say he was in the town's St John's Hospital after suffering a seizure at his GP's surgery. He had sought medical help after feeling unwell.

By the following Sunday evening, September 2, he had lost consciousness and was transferred to the hospital's intensive care unit.
