Sneaky bastard

AN illegal immigrant climbs out of a tanker - before escaping into the countryside.

The hoodie-wearing man - caked in white powder - emerged as the truck was stuck in a motorway jam.

He and three other men were spotted fleeing the German-plated vehicle on the M26 in Kent shortly after it arrived through the Channel Tunnel.

A witness said: "The driver didn't know they were in the back. But they stood out, covered in that powder."

'Expect Israeli strikes on Russian arms shipment to Syria-Hezbollah'U.S. officials tell The Wall Street Journal: Another round of Israeli airstrikes could target a new Russian transfer of Yakhont advanced anti-ship missiles in the near future o Russia moving more quickly than previously thought to deliver S-300 surface-to-air defense systems to Syria o CIA Director John Brennan in Israel to coordinate policy.

<<123>>U.S. officials told The Wall Street Journal on Thursday that another round of Israeli airstrikes could target a new Russian transfer of advanced anti-ship missiles in the near future. Israeli and Western intelligence services believe the Yakhont missiles, which have been sold by Russia to Syria in recent years, could be transferred to Hezbollah within days, the newspaper reported on its website Friday.

At the same time, The New York Times reported Friday that the Yakhont missiles have already been delivered to Syria's armed forces. Israel has repeatedly reinforced, with words and actions, its stated red line: that it will not allow the transfer of "game-changing" weaponry to Islamic terror groups such as Hezbollah. Israel has also relayed messages that it is not seeking a confrontation with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's forces, but will act against transfers of weaponry through his territory.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's last-minute trip to Russia on Tuesday apparently did not change the Russians' intentions to also deliver the advanced S-300 anti-aircraft missile system to Syria. According to the Journal, U.S. officials believe that Russia is moving more quickly than previously thought to deliver S-300 surface-to-air defense systems to Syria. U.S. officials told the paper that the S-300 system, which is capable of shooting down guided missiles and could make it more risky for any warplanes to enter Syrian airspace, could leave Russia for Syrian port of Tartus by the end of May.

Together, the S-300 anti-aircraft and anti-missile system, and the Yakhont anti-ship system, would pose a formidable threat to any outside intervention in Syria, based on the international Libya model. The anti-ship missiles would be a serious threat to the Israeli navy, as well as the facilities above Israel's newfound underwater gas reserves. The S-300 could threaten Israeli military and civilian aircraft flying Israeli airspace, and not just over Lebanese and Syrian airspace.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Russia has sent a dozen or more warships to patrol waters near its naval base in Syria, a buildup that U.S. and European officials see as a newly aggressive stance meant partly to warn the West and Israel not to intervene in Syria's bloody civil war. Russia's expanded presence in the eastern Mediterranean, which began attracting U.S. officials' notice three months ago, represents one of its largest sustained naval deployments since the Cold War, according to the Journal.

The paper reported that Russia currently has 11 ships in the eastern Mediterranean, organized into three taskforces, including destroyers, frigates, support vessels and intelligence-collecting ships. Another three-ship group of amphibious vessels is headed to the region. Russia's navy chief confirmed that warships from Russia's Pacific Fleet had entered the Mediterranean for the first time in decades, and that the taskforce might be reinforced with nuclear submarines, as the country starts building up a permanent fleet in the region. The group includes the destroyer Admiral Panteleyev, two amphibious warfare ships called Peresvet and Admiral Nevelskoi, and a tanker and a tugboat.

"The taskforce has successfully passed through the Suez Canal and entered the Mediterranean. It is the first time in decades that Pacific Fleet warships have entered this region," Pacific Fleet spokesman Capt. 1st Rank Roman Martov told RIA.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov meanwhile told Lebanese TV station al-Mayadeen on Thursday that Moscow had not backed down from its contract to supply S-300 systems to Syria.

"We are not signing any new contracts, but we will complete the old ones, especially with regards to aerial defense systems," Lavrov said. In what could be perceived as a message to Israel, he said, "Those that aren't planning on acting aggressively against sovereign nations should not have any reason to fear this."

The unofficial response from Israeli government officials to Lavrov's statements amounted to saying that actions will be the deciding factor and not declarations. A senior government official noted that the deal between Russia and Syria had been signed in 2010 and was delayed multiple times, despite numerous Russian statements that it would be carried out.

"We relayed the message . Bringing weapons to Syria destabilizes the area and carries the risk of seeing them transferred to Hezbollah," a government official said.

In a sign of the growing tension in the region, CIA Director John Brennan arrived in Israel Thursday and met with the top officials in Israel's defense establishment, with a central focus on the developments in Syria. It was Brennan's first trip to Israel since assuming his position two months ago. The CIA chief went straight into a meeting in Tel Aviv with Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon, a senior Israeli official told AFP.

Channel 10 TV said that Ya'alon reaffirmed during the talks that Israel "will not permit the transfer of weapons" from Syria to Hezbollah in Lebanon. According to local press reports, Brennan's visit is aimed at coordinating U.S. and Israeli positions over the escalating crisis in Syria, specifically as international diplomatic momentum between the U.S. and Russia gathers for a peaceful resolution to the crisis.

According to the reports, the U.S. is concerned that Israel will act independently to strike any advanced arms shipments in Syria it believes may be headed to Hezbollah, potentially scuttling the international diplomatic maneuvering.

Russian Pacific Fleet Warships Enter Mediterranean For First Time In Decades, To Park In Cyprus

Earlier we reported that the US has now officially landed a Marine force in Israel as well as an assault ship, in a visit that the US Navy promptly assured "is not associated with, nor a reaction to, any world events." It seems we were not the only ones who read this justification somewhat skeptically: so did Russia. And in a historic event, the Russian Pacific fleet, for the first time in decades, crossed the Suez Canal and entered the Mediterranean, direction Cyprus' port of Limasol (hi Cyprus - Russia will be arriving shortly) in what is now the loudest implied warning to the US and Israel amassing military units across Syria's border that Russia will not stand idly by as Syria is used by the Israeli "Defense" Forces for target practice. "The task force has successfully passed through the Suez Channel and entered the Mediterranean. It is the first time in decades that Pacific Fleet warships enter this region," Capt. First Rank Roman Martov said. This is what is also known as dropping hints, loud and clear.

The group, including the destroyer Admiral Panteleyev, the amphibious warfare ships Peresvet and Admiral Nevelskoi, the tanker Pechenga and the salvage/rescue tug Fotiy Krylov left the port of Vladivostok on March 19 to join Russia's Mediterranean task force.

Admiral Panteleyev destroyer

Admiral Nevelskoi

The task force currently includes the large anti-submarine ship Severomorsk, the frigate Yaroslav Mudry, the salvage/rescue tugs Altai and SB-921 and the tanker Lena from the Northern and Baltic Fleets, as well as the Ropucha-II Class landing ship Azov from the Black Sea Fleet. The task force may be enlarged to include nuclear submarines, Navy Commander Admiral Viktor Chirkov said last Sunday.

Shore leave for a whole lot of submarines just a few hundred kilometers from Syria? Surely.

From Rian:

"The task force has successfully passed through the Suez Channel and entered the Mediterranean. It is the first time in decades that Pacific Fleet warships enter this region," Capt. First Rank Roman Martov said.

The Defense Ministry said in April Russia has begun setting up a naval task force in the Mediterranean, sending several warships from the Pacific Fleet to the region. Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said in March a permanent naval task force in the Mediterranean was needed to defend Russia's interests in the region.

A senior Defense Ministry official said the Mediterranean task force's command and control agencies will be based either in Novorossiysk, Russia, or in Sevastopol, Ukraine.

Admiral Vladimir Komoyedov, head of the parliamentary defense committee, previously told RIA Novosti that the Mediterranean task force should be comprised of 10 warships and support vessels as part of several tactical groups tasked with attack, antisubmarine warfare and minesweeping.

The Soviet Union maintained its 5th Mediterranean Squadron from 1967 until 1992. It was formed to counter the US Navy's 6th Fleet during the Cold War, and consisted of 30-50 warships and auxiliary vessels. It appears that the squadron is being reincarnated and quite rapidly at that.

It also appears that the two key naval forces in the Mediterranean are finally starting to position themselves for what may soon be a face off.

Hopefully Europe's "anti-manipulation" task force can spook enough majors to push the price of Brent much lower before the moment such an escalation becomes reality.

P.S. Got oil?

Interstate 81 is closed in both directions at the 22/322 overpass in Susquehanna Township, Dauphin County after a massive fire involving a diesel tanker.

The tanker was on fire for about 45 minutes on the 22/322 overpass, which also remains closed.

PennDOT officials said both roads will remain closed until further notice because they are worried about the structural integrity of the overpass. Spokesperson Fritzi Schreffler said it appears the overpass' decking and beams are in bad shape, and it is simply too dangerous to let cars travel underneath on I-81.

The crash and fire happened around 6:15 a.m. A thick plume of black smoke could be seen for miles.

The driver of the rig was able to escape with minor injuries.

I-81 north is closed to drivers at Route 114 in Mechanicsburg. I-81 south is closed to drivers at the Progress Avenue exit in Dauphin County.

abc27 is getting reports of significant traffic delays on I-81, Route 22/322, Progress Avenue, Cameron Street, Linglestown Road, Route 581, and the Carlisle Pike.

BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan - A US military refuelling plane crashed Friday in the mountains of Kyrgyzstan shortly after taking off from a base that serves as a key hub for the campaign in Afghanistan, leaving the fate of its three American crew unknown.

The KC-135 Stratotanker -- believed to be carrying dozens of tonnes of fuel -- crashed and burst into flames around 50 kilometres (30 miles) west of the Kyrgyz capital Bishkek, US and local officials said.

The cause of the disaster -- which took place around 2:55 pm local time (0855 GMT) -- was not immediately clear. Images from the scene showed ash and isolated pieces of wreckage were all that remained of the burned-out plane.

"A US Air Force KC-135 tanker aircraft crashed today in northern Kyrgyzstan. Emergency response crews are on scene," the aircraft's base, the Manas Transit Centre, said in a statement.

"The status of the crew is unknown," it added. "The cause of the crash is under investigation." A later statement confirmed there were three crew on board.

Kyrgyz officials said that search operations were being called off for the night and would resume in the morning. The interior ministry said that the site of the accident was under guard.

The Manas transit centre, which is situated at Bishkek airport, is key to US military operations in Afghanistan, used to ferry troops into the country, refuel warplanes and evacuate wounded soldiers.
The incident comes less than a week after a civilian cargo plane crashed shortly after take-off at the US-run Bagram airbase in Afghanistan, killing all seven crew members on board.

Kyrgyz Emergency Situations Minister Kubatbek Boronov told Kyrgyz media after rushing to the scene that it was possible that no trace of the crew would ever be found.

"I cannot exclude that the three American pilots could have died after being burned alive in the explosion," he said.

He told Kyrgyz radio that the plane's black box had been found but no human remains, which could have burnt up in the intense blaze.

"The remains of people have not been found at the crash scene. On board the plane were 60 tonnes of fuel."
The head of Kyrgyzstan's transport prosecutors, Kuvan Mamakeyev, told AFP from the scene that debris from the crashed plane could have scattered over a radius of up to 20 kilometres.

"In such a disaster, alas, it is unlikely that the crew managed to survive," he said.

He added that the US military attache had arrived in the remote area, which lies between the villages of Chorgolu and Cholok Aryk.

Some witnesses quoted by Kyrgyz media said that a pilot had apparently been seen parachuting out of the plane.

"The preliminary information is that the pilot jumped out with a parachute. They have gone to look for him," the deputy local district chief Anatoly Ivannikov told local radio.

Another witness, Daniyar Satymkulov told local radio from the scene: "A parachute is lying there. But there are no people to be seen."

Witnesses told the Kyrgyz AKIPress news agency that they heard a buzz and then an explosion.

A local resident, Nurlan Derdenov, told local news website 24.kg that the plane "blew up in the air."
"School children managed to film it on cell phones. When the plane fell, it hit a high-voltage power line."
Photographs showed a broken-off wing of a plane lying on the ground with the US flag and the aircraft's identification number visible.

The US airbase opened in 2001 at Bishkek's Manas international airport and the current lease on the airbase expires in 2014, an arrangement that has been a cause of friction between Washington and Bishkek.

Kyrgyzstan's President Almazbek Atambayev has vowed that the country will fulfil its obligations on the lease of the base but wants Manas to serve only as a civilian passenger hub from 2014.

Russian Defense Ministry said on 8th May that several Pacific Fleet warships enter Mediterranean Sea through Suez Canal in the middle of May. The group includes destroyer Admiral Panteleyev, amphibious warfare ships Peresvet and Admiral Nevelskoi , tanker Pechenga , and rescue tug Fotiy Krylov. They will be a part of newly organized "Mediterranean Squadron."
.

Destroyer Admiral Panteleyev(Project 1155 - Udaloy class, 6930T)
.

Amphibious warfare ship Peresvet(Project 775, 3450T)

Amphibious warfare ship Admiral Nevelskoi(Project 775, 3450T).

Tanker Pechenga .

Rescue tug Fotiy Krylov

It is not an accidental decision. In March, as if foresaw the intensifying situation of Syrian civil war, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu already said that "a permanent naval task force is needed to defend Russia's interests in the Mediterranean Sea."

Russian warships will stay near Syrian offshore for a few months. I hope they can be a deterrent power preventing the spillover of Syrian civil war.

HARRISBURG, Pa. - May 9, 2013 (WPVI) --
A section of Interstate 81 near Harrisburg was expected to remain closed
in both directions for the next several days after a tanker truck fully
loaded with diesel fuel overturned Thursday morning and exploded into
flames, sending black smoke billowing into the sky.
Officials said the crash occurred on an on-ramp to Route
22-322, where the ramp curls back over the interstate and runs under
another section of Route 22-322. They said the intense heat buckled
steel beams on the top section and damaged it so badly there were fears
it could collapse and fall onto I-81.
