Charles Ramsey, who helped free Cleveland kidnap victims, gets burgers for life

Apparently, creating a special hamburger to honor Charles Ramsey was just the beginning.

Now, the hero in the rescue of four kidnap victims held captive on Cleveland's West Side for roughly 10 years will enjoy free burgers for life.

More than a dozen Northeast Ohio restaurants have pledged an offer of a burger anytime Ramsey wants to stop by and dig in. AMP 150 at the Marriott Cleveland Airport; Washington Place Bistro and Inn in Little Italy; Fahrenheit restaurant in Tremont; Market Garden Brewery, Bier Markt, Bar Cento and Nano Brew in Ohio City; Welshfield Inn in Troy Township; Hodges and Pura Vida in downtown Cleveland; 87 West at Crocker Park in Westlake; Orchard House restaurant in Brunswick; Flour restaurant in Moreland Hills, and the Allegheny Grille in Foxburg, Pennsylvania, have joined in the offer.

The burger tribute was inspired by Ramsey, who stopped eating his meal of a Big Mac to intervene and aid the escape of Amanda Berry and her daughter, along with Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight.

Onlookers, media speak to Charles Ramsey (center) after he helped free Amanda Berry from 10 years being held captive in a west side Cleveland home.
Scott Shaw, The Plain Dealer

Soon afterward, Hodges restaurant, where Ramsey works as a dishwasher, created the Ramsey Burger, a play on a Big Mac.

"It's an 8-ounce burger of Certified Angus Beef, with a secret sauce," says chef-co-owner Chris Hodgson. Initially offered as a weeklong special, the sandwich has been promoted to permanent status on Hodges' menu.

Which got Hodgson's partner, Scott Kuhn of Driftwood Restaurant Group, thinking a bigger tribute was due.

"We want to honor our local hero with local food," said Kuhn, who operates four of the restaurants participating in the offer. "He stopped his meal midway through to help those women. We're now making sure he has other opportunities to go out and fully enjoy his burger."

A single-edition "Chuck Card," good for life, is being stamped in Ramsey's honor. Anytime that Ramsey takes the card into one of the participating restaurants, he'll get a free burger.

"I'm sure some places will give him more -- maybe add fries and a soft drink -- but that will be up to them," Kuhn says.

Ramsey, who has been traveling during a paid leave from his job at Hodges, was not available for comment. The Chuck Card will be formally presented to him when he returns to Cleveland.

Experts commissioned by the operator of a Japanese nuclear plant that faces possible closure because of a suspected active seismic fault say a decision should wait, citing insufficient data. Operator Japan Atomic Power Co. disputes that view. The decision is being closely watched as the pro-nuclear government moves to restart plants suspended since the Fukushima nuclear crisis. The plant's owners plan to appeal the regulators' decision. Still, the development comes as a number of other plants are awaiting determination whether their sites contain active faults. The decision could also be viewed as a setback for Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's government, which took office in December.

Mr. Abe's administration effectively wants to reverse a decision to eventually phase out nuclear power, a move taken by the previous government that was in office during the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant accident. For the company, which is jointly owned by Japan's major utilities, the closure of the Tsuruga plant would eliminate its only source of revenue and pose large-scale costs for a permanent decommissioning of the facility.

'Dog Father' Retires From Military Service

It is a retirement ceremony like many. The anthem plays over the loudspeaker. Soldiers render honors. A barking of orders, medals pinned and an old Soldier -- unleashed from military service -- begins a new chapter in life. However, the retirement ceremony held, Feb. 1, here on Conn Barracks was different than most. Soldiers and community members from Schweinfurt, Bamberg and Mannheim gathered to honor Lando F620, a military working dog who rose to the rank of sergeant first class and retired from the 94th Military Police Detachment.

"The average lifespan of Lando's breed is 15 years," said Capt. Dane M. Hiltner, commander of the 630th Military Police Company, during remarks delivered at the ceremony. Lando, a 12-year-old Belgian Malinois, has been in military service for the past eight years. "Can you imagine? As humans our average lifespan is maybe 80. So, can you imagine serving the Army for 40 years?"

Lando deployed four times in those eight years. At the ceremony he was awarded the Army Achievement Medal for his service to the Army.

"He is the dog father. All the other dogs love him. They won't bark at him," said Staff Sgt. Richard McNulty of the 94th MPD, who has worked with dogs like Lando for four years.

Lando entered the military working dog program in December of 2003 at Lackland Air Force Base, where all military working dogs receive their initial training. He trained as a patrol explosive detection dog in 2005 and was then assigned to the 272nd Military Police Company in Schweinfurt, Germany. He continued his career with the 630th Military Company and finished under the 94th Military Police Detachment.

Lando deployed four times -- once in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, twice for Operation Iraqi Freedom and most recently in support of the Kosovo Force. He had 15 confirmed finds while deployed downrange.

"The biggest achievement that he has done is finding explosives downrange," said McNulty. "There is no way to calculate how he saved lives -- finding the explosives, finding the IEDs, getting them off the route the Soldiers were going."

Lando also provided force protection to the president and vice president of the United States and the secretary of state, said McNulty. But when he wasn't sniffing out bombs and protecting heads of state, Lando was protecting the Bamberg and Schweinfurt military communities working perimeter checks and gate guard.

Military working dogs spend countless hours with their handlers to hone the skills necessary to sniff out drugs or explosives. But now, Lando's golden years are in front of him as he transitions into retirement.

"He gets all excited," said Staff Sgt. Michael S. Bacon, about Lando's work ethic even today. Bacon is the kennel master for the 94th MPD. "He wants to do it even though his body can't really do it for him anymore. Mentally he is like 'let's go, let's do this.'"

One Bamberg family has now decided to adopt him.

At the Feb. 1 ceremony, Capt. Rory Thibault, his wife Johanna and their family received Lando's leash and a certificate of adoption formally certifying Lando's transition out of military service and into doggy retirement.

"When we saw a note on the Bamberg community page about a (military working dog) looking to retire we were intrigued," said Johanna Thibault. "An older and well-trained dog would be a great fit for us. After we met Lando we fell in love and realized he'd be a great fit for our family."

Pet owners can adopt military working dogs once the dogs are removed from service for reasons ranging from medical issues to their own disinterest in sniffing out explosives.

"They want to work," said McNulty about all military working dogs. "They have a drive to work. It takes them a little longer to go to a home and be a pet. Their job is to just be loyal to that family, not search for explosives, not to do bite work anymore. It takes them time to adjust to their new life."

Lando does not have any medical issues. But his new family should be warned.

"He sleeps on his back with his legs up in the air," said Staff Sgt. James A. Hall, the kennel noncommissioned officer in charge, who is familiar with Lando's antics. "It looks like he is playing dead."

Although the Bamberg and Schweinfurt communities will no longer be graced with the 'Dog Father,' his new family already has plans on how Lando will spend the rest of his dog days.

"It's very clear to us that Lando was well loved in the Schweinfurt and Bamberg kennels. He is a people-oriented dog, and we're making sure to include him in everything we do. Be it sitting and watching TV or walking to kindergarten, we're making sure Lando is there with us," said the Thibault family.

A firefighter also writes on Facebook that he was the victim of stone throwing, a stone went through the box on the fire truck and hit the man in the head - luckily, he had a helmet on them and did therefore without damage.
Jon McNaughton: Liberalism is a Disease .

.

http://www.jonmcnaughton.com/

.

I like to paint pictures that express how I feel about what is happening in America.

We

have a disease. It's infecting every aspect of our society and it's

time we did something about it. Some of these people I really like and

some I don't, but for the sake of our health, our children and our

sanity, we need to take drastic action quickly.

What if we could

bring them all together, put them on a deserted island and quarantine

them for say a hundred years? They believe they have all the answers to

everything. But every liberal idea I've ever seen has led to total

failure. If they were right, their new island home would be a utopia

before long. Let's look at the most liberal communities in the country.

New York City, Detroit, Chicago...how are they doing? Yes, I say let's

quarantine them and let nature take its course.

You might have this disease if you believe:

We

should remove guns from law-abiding citizens who have a right to

protect themselves, and leave them in the hands of criminals who will

acquire the firearms illegally anyway they can. How many gun-free zones

do you know that have low murder rates?

The same liberals who

are trying to save us, turn around and demand abortion rights for women

at the expense of over 53 million human lives.

Raise the national

debt to meet the continued demand for welfare and entitlement spending

at the expense of our country's economic future.

Fight a war

against terrorism without identifying who the enemy is because of

political correctness and then allow illegal aliens to cross the border

by the millions.

Provide kid glove treatment to Islamic radicals

and unfriendly regimes and then show religious intolerance to Jews and

Christians.

Allow a minority of Gay Rights Activists to dictate the definition of marriage and force Christians to comply.

Use environmentalism to thwart the energy interests of Americans at a time of great financial stress and national security.

McNaughton Answers to Liberal Questions:

Why are you making fun of these people?

Most

of my paintings are serious in nature, (although liberals find them

amusing) this one is more of a satire. This means to me, that although

it is humorous on the surface, the underlying message is very serious.

Liberals use humor relentlessly as a tool to suppress conservative

ideas. As always, if my paintings can cause someone to think about or

debate the serious issues, it was successful.

Are you selling prints of this?

No,

there are copyright restrictions. There are some things more important

than money. My hope is to help people wake up to effects of liberalism

in America.

Do you think all liberals are bad?

Well, yes,

but I'm talking about their ideologies, which are destructive. I have

many liberal friends. I know many good people that for some unfortunate

reason are infected by the disease.

How did you decide whom to include in the painting?

I

chose well-known liberals in different fields that influence Americans

every day. There are many more who I could have included that I think

are spreading the disease. Perhaps, some liberals will be pleased if

they were included in the painting; like a "badge of honor."

Why is Satan in the painting? Are you saying these people are Satanic??

I

don't know that. Perhaps most of them are just deceived. Satan is

what I call the "Number One Liberal." Liberalism is about control.

Satan wants to promise you everything in exchange for your freedom. He

uses lies; deceit and compulsion to have you do his bidding. In the

end, you are left with nothing. How has any liberal idea ever ended

well? It is instant satisfaction at the expense of your soul. Yes,

liberalism is a disease.

District Spent $20K Per Student, Had Rodents In Schools, Holes In Ceiling and Walls

Student: 'We had to worry if something was going to
crawl on us ... if the ceiling was going to fall in on us'

A news service for the people of Michigan from the Mackinac Center for Public Policy

District Spent $20K Per Student.

Though the Highland Park School District spent $19,634 per pupil in 2010-11 , which was the highest in the state , district schools were so mismanaged that they had rodents in the classrooms, holes in the ceilings and walls, and horrendous filth in the bathrooms.

"I it in the media center," DeCarlos, a junior at Highland Park Community High School, said of a mouse he saw running along the floor from a nearby room.

He wasn't alone.

"It was terrible," said Delshon, a senior at HPCHS. "We had to worry if something was going to crawl on us; worry if the ceiling was going to fall in on us.

"You'd just do your work and you'd just see something just run across," he said.

I have been visiting Highland Park schools this year to watch as the district transitions from a conventional district to a charter district - one of the first two public school districts in Michigan to make such a change.

Though the Highland Park district was struggling financially and academically, it spent more money than every other district in the state. During the 2010-11 school year, Highland Park spent nearly $20,000 per student. And yet, the Highland Park schools are in utter disrepair.

In 2012, a financial review team appointed by (Republican) Gov. Rick Snyder declared that the Highland Park school district was in a financial emergency. The district had spent millions more than it had received in revenue.

There were accusations of mismanagement. Highland Park board member Robert Davis was charged with improperly spending more than $170,000 of school district money, on clothing, hotels and restaurant tabs, among other things.

Ultimately, the state gave Highland Park more than $8 million in extra funding so that it could pay its bills.

This fall, the district reopened as a charter district. School administrators who work for The Leona Group, the charter management company that is running the schools, say that they have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to try to clean and fix up the facilities.

Leona replaced some toilets at Highland Park schools, but not those on school floors that aren't being used. The remaining toilets betray just how far things had declined in Highland Park schools under conventional district management. The toilet bowls are caked brown.

Ceiling tiles are missing in many of the buildings. One hallway wall in the high school is partially caved in. The security guard showing me around the school building said that the wall was damaged during a fight last year.

"This stuff didn't just get like this. It's been like this," said Valecia Ashford, a teacher who has been with the district for 37 years.

When I asked her how teachers and parents allowed students to attend school in these conditions, Ashford responded: "I thought about my colleagues. Always placed them in very high regard. But going into some of these rooms, and looking at the filth that was in those rooms ... my whole attitude changed toward them."

Prior to being charterized, some district officials were blaming state legislators for a lack of funding. The Michigan PTA President also called for more money. At the same time, the district was spending nearly $20,000 per student - well over a quarter of a million per classroom - while the district shed nearly half of its students

The previous teachers' contract shows that the district paid 100 percent of health care premiums while granting special favors for the union, like handing over district financial information, setting up an automatic payroll deduction for dues, and allowed the local president to spend half of his or her time working exclusively on union business.

No Highland Park District school board member responded to a request for comment as to how the district could have spent so much while leaving the facilities in such disrepair.
