Afghan Women Jailed For 'Immorality' Increases 50% In 18 Months

The number of women and girls in Afghanistan imprisoned for "moral crimes" has risen by 50% in the past 18 months, a rights group says.

Human Rights Watch says many are jailed for running away from home, often from forced marriages or domestic violence.

Others are behind bars as a result of alleged adultery, in truth often involving rape, it said.

The government should "get tough on abusers of women and stop blaming women who are crime victims", said HRW.

It said 600 women and girls were now imprisoned for "moral crimes" - the highest since the US-led overthrow of the Taliban 12 years ago.

About 110 of those were girls under 18.

Virginity tests

Human Rights Watch's alert comes just three days after angry scenes in the Afghan parliament forced a halt to a debate about reinforcing a law to prevent violence against women.

The law banning violence against women, child marriages and forced marriages was passed by presidential decree in 2009, but did not gain MPs' approval.

Some women's activists had worried that by opening up the law for debate might risk it being watered down or even repealed.

Human Rights Watch says many of the protections within the Elimination of Violence Against Women law - which bans forced and underage marriage, beatings and rape - are still not being implemented on the ground.

"Four years after the adoption of a law on violence against women and 12 years after Taliban rule, women are still imprisoned for being victims of forced marriage, domestic violence, and rape," Brad Adams, HRW Asia director, was quoted as saying.

It said many of those detained for so-called moral crimes had attempted to report rapes to police only to be arrested for adultery, while others fleeing forced marriages or abuse were jailed for running away from home - even though that is not a crime according to the Afghan criminal code.

And it said that many of those accused of "moral crimes" were subjected to "virginity tests" with no medical basis which contravened international law.

"Coerced 'virginity' examinations are a form of sexual assault," Mr Adams said. "Afghan police, without any scientific basis, are routinely forcing these unspeakable examinations on women and girls."

One prisoner, Sorya, told HRW she was forced to marry at 12 and was abused by her husband. After nine years of marriage during which she had three children, he accused her of running away with another man whom she had not even met.

HRW said Sorya was serving a sentence of five-and-a-half years in prison. She was pregnant at the time of her arrest, and her baby died in prison three weeks after he was born.

'Tragedy'

HRW's Afghanistan researcher, Heather Barr, said the dramatic increase in prosecutions for "moral crimes" could be related to increased confidence among religious conservatives as international troops prepare to leave Afghanistan in 2014.

"I think it's possible that as everyone anticipates the departure of foreigners, there is a feeling that in a sense things can go back to normal, and... people will be free to ignore in the future,'' Ms Barr said.

"If that's true, that's really is a tragedy, because these ideas didn't come from foreigners. These ideas came from Afghan women's rights activists,'' she said.

HRW called on Afghan President Hamid Karzai to issue a decree that running away should not be treated as a crime and instruct police to investigate possible incidents of violence against women.

It urged international donors to pressure the government to improve women's protections.

The Afghan interior ministry says it is preparing a response to Human Rights Watch's report.

Police detain Munib Farhat, A Muslim from Majd al-Krum (N.Israel) suspected of running abusive sect, allegedly subjugated 6 families to his will, forced parents to treat children violently.

Woman who left the cult of Majd al-Krum says leader sexually assaulted members, smeared feces on kids. 'When I screamed he threatened to murder me,' she tells Ynet -
"He attacked the women and children, kept women locked in the shower for hours and took our paychecks," said a woman who was a member of a violent cult allegedly led by 56-year-old Munib Farhat in the Galilee community of Majd al-Krum.

Farhat was arrested on Tuesday by Northern District Police after a month-long investigation following a complaint by a 46 year-old member of the cult who managed to escape. He was remanded for eight days.
Police suspect the leader had ordered his followers to act violently toward their children, in the name of "proper" education. The violent cult consisted of 11 adults and 25 children.

The man is also accused of sexually assaulting several of the women in the group and abusing both the women and children. Among other things, the cult leader allegedly locked the children in the bathroom, smeared feces on their mouths and rationed their food. Farhat has denied the allegations.

"Farhat told us he was a religious man and could solve any financial, social and family-related problem," the woman who filed the complaint told Ynet. "He also convinced us to turn over our paychecks at the end of each month and said if we wanted to purchase anything we should ask him (for money)."
According to the woman, the cult leader opened a small store in his home "and he forced us to shop only there. Sometimes we would ask him for money to buy food for the house, and he would give us 50 shekels ($14) and tell us that was enough. He also never agreed to give the children any money. He stole our all of our funds."

The complainant's brother said she told him the abuse, assault and sexual exploitation went on for years.

The woman further told Ynet that "at first we believed (Farhat) and thought he wanted to help us, but everything changed over the past few years. He attacked women and children; forced them to clean the house and cultivate the land without any compensation. Any woman who objected was attacked and locked in the shower or stockroom for more than seven hours.
"He brutally attacked me several times - stepped on my neck, hit me all over by body and locked me up in the stockroom with the mice. When I screamed he threatened to murder me. I did not seek medical care because I was afraid he would hurt me if he found out," she recalled.

The woman said that as soon as she left the cult and complained against Farhat, he turned her family against her. "My husband and three children are no longer in touch with me and believe that the cult leader's way is the right one. I hope we will live together again - far away from this horrific story," the woman said.

GAY MARRIAGE BILL CLEARS COMMONS

The Government's controversial plans to legalise gay marriage have cleared the Commons despite efforts by Tory backbenchers to derail the legislation.

There was applause in the House after MPs voted by 366 to 161, majority 205, to give the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill a third reading.

The legislation will go to the House of Lords after the half-term recess where it is expected to attract fierce opposition from peers, especially the bishops.

The result is a marginal improvement for David Cameron on the vote at second reading when 175 MPs opposed the plans in a Commons vote. It also comes as a relief for Downing Street following a serious attempt on Monday by Tory former minister Tim Loughton to derail the Bill. Mr Loughton had tabled an amendment extending civil partnerships to straight couples - a move which ministers warned could have cost the Treasury an extra lb4 billion in pension liabilities and scupper the chances of the Bill becoming law.

But Labour - mindful they did not want to play any part in derailing the Bill - decided against supporting Mr Loughton - a move which would have seen the amendment pass - and offered the Government an 11th-hour deal to immediately review the possibility of extending civil partnerships to straight couples.

Culture Secretary Maria Miller accepted their amendment and Mr Loughton's amendment in the end was easily defeated.

Turning to Ms Miller shortly before the vote, shadow minister for women and equalities minister Yvette Cooper said: "We can only wonder what would happen if you and I leapt up and started leading a Eurovision-style chorus perhaps of congratulations perhaps Abba-style, maybe not 'One Man, One Woman' but certainly 'I Do, I Do, I Do'.

"I have heard Conservative members talk about the anger in their constituencies. And I hope they will now be able to stop talking about the anger and start talking about the joy. Because this is about the joy that we can deliver to those that want to get married just as their parents did. Let's be loud and proud, let's start the singing. Let's celebrate, not discriminate. Let's put aside the anger and hear it for the joy."

Earlier, Sir Tony Baldry - the senior Tory MP who represents the Church of England in the Commons - said he already had enough problems trying to persuade voters in his rural Oxfordshire constituency of Banbury about the need to legalise gay marriage. The Second Church Estates Commissioner said: "I can't speak for other MPs, but I have had enough problems in my constituency with same-sex marriage." In a heated debate on Monday a number of MPs, many of them Conservative backbenchers, stood up to denounce the Government's plans. Conservative former defence minister Sir Gerald Howarth said he believed there was an "aggressive homosexual community" who saw gay marriage as a "stepping stone to something even further".

Two Tory cabinet ministers - Welsh Secretary David Jones and Environment Secretary Owen Paterson - voted against the Bill at third reading. They were joined by 10 junior ministers: minister without portfolio John Hayes, Solicitor-General Oliver Heald, transport minister Simon Burns, Europe minister David Lidington, defence minister Philip Dunne, defence minister Andrew Robathan, defence minister Mark Francois, justice minister Jeremy Wright, and Northern Ireland minister Mike Penning and work and pensions minister Esther McVey.

British sisters on aid trip are kidnapped and raped in front of their father after being stopped at Libyan checkpoint

: Two women were abducted on the outskirts of Benghazi en route to Gaza
:Taken by men in military uniforms to an isolated farm along with their father
:Witnesses said sisters, of Pakistani origin, wearing 'Free Palestine' t-shirts
:Officials said four suspects had been arrested and are tracing a fifth person
:Deputy Prime Minister Awad al-Barassi said father witnessed the rape
:Libyan Interior Ministry blamed the incident on 'outlaws' and illicit checkpoint

Two British women aid workers were kidnapped and raped in front of their father after being stopped at an unofficial checkpoint in Libya.

The sisters were abducted when their vehicle was stopped on the outskirts of the eastern city of Benghazi.

They were taken by men in military uniforms to an isolated farm and subjected to a horrific sex attack in front of their father.

Witnesses said the young women, both Pakistan-born British citizens, were wearing veils and Free Palestine T-shirts. Libyan officials said four suspects have been arrested and security forces are trying to trace a fifth.

It was unclear whether they were part of the 'revolutionary brigades' that serve under the country's security ministries or outlaw militia.

Deputy prime minister Awad al-Barassi said the sisters were in a 'very bad shape' after the horrific attack, which happened on Tuesday. Last night they were preparing to fly home to the UK.

He said the women were part of an ten-vehicle aid convoy trying to reach the Gaza Strip with medical supplies. Organised by IHH, a Turkish humanitarian relief organisation, the aid mission left Britain on February 25 but became stuck in Libya when Egyptian border guards refused to let the convoy cross into Egypt.

The family were on a bus on their way to Benghazi's Benina airport when they were stopped at the unofficial checkpoint by armed young men in military uniforms.

Mr al-Barassi said the women and their father were kidnapped, and the man witnessed his daughters' rape.

He said he visited the victims and met their father at a Benghazi hospital to apologise on behalf of the Libyan people and government. He described the family as being in a 'very bad psychological state'.

There were reports that two other members of the aid group were also assaulted by a different armed group and that two others are missing.

The remaining members of the aid convoy travelled to the Turkish consulate in Benghazi for safety

Mr al-Barassi said those involved in the attack would stand trial soon.

The attack highlights how Libya remains a dangerous place for foreigners in the aftermath of the overthrow of the Gaddafi regime.

Hundreds of heavily armed militia, many with links to criminal gangs, continue to operate freely across the country.

Sharp rise in jail terms for Afghan rape and abuse victims

Statistics obtained from Afghanistan's Interior Ministry by the campaign group Human Rights Watch reveal the number of women and girls convicted of 'moral crimes,' which include running away from home has increased by 50 per cent in the last year from 400 to 600.

Many of the 600 women jailed in the last year are victims of sexual assault and domestic abuse whose only crime was to run away from their assailants, the group said.

It called on the Afghan government to enforce its own Elimination of Violence Against Women (EVAW), and to stop its judges punishing female victims.

Although it is not a crime in Afghanistan for women to run away, the group said the country's judges, including members of its Supreme Court, regard women who run away from their homes as criminals. Many of them who flee rapes and other assaults have been charged with seeking sex outside marriage, known as Zina in Afghanistan.

Those jailed for Zina include women and girls who have been raped or forced into prostitution, the group said.

Earlier this year Human Rights Watch released its report I had to Run Away, which revealed that half of all women and 95 per cent of girls in Afghan jails had been convicted of 'moral crimes' of running away or sex outside marriage.

A report by Oxfam found that 87 per cent of Afghan women had suffered sexual and physical abuse and been forced into unwanted marriages.

Earlier this year a 22 year old woman, Gulnaz, who was jailed for Zina after she was raped and impregnated by her cousin's husband decided to marry her attacker to spare her daughter the stigma of being born out of wedlock. She had been 'pardoned' for her crime by President Karzai and released following an international outcry.

"Four years after the adoption of a law on violence against women and twelve years after Taliban rule, women are still imprisoned for being victims of forced marriage, domestic violence, and rape. The Afghan government needs to get tough on abusers of women, and stop blaming women who are crime victims," said Brad Adams, Asia director of Human Rights Watch.

The group called on President Karzai to issue a decree clarifying that 'running away' is not a crime and other crimes, like Zina should not be used to punish runaways.

The 2009 Elimination of Violence Against Women law, which was inctroduced by a presidential decree, has yet to be passed by the Afghan parliament which voiced its opposition once again on Saturday. Islamic conservatives in the parliament are opposed to provisions which make it illegal for a father to stop his daughter marrying a man of her choice.

They also oppose for women who have fled sexual abuse and violence and claim they are 'immoral' houses of prostitution and casual sex. Some support amendments which would legalise forced and child marriages and domestic assaults in some circumstances.

Last year just over one in five of 470 violence against women cases resulted in conviction.

Sweden riots & the Islamic world

Islam is a psychotic cult of evil and lies. On one hand while 50 year old religious and community leaders are cutting open vaginas of 8 year old girls they married and bleeding them to death, (http://patdollard.com/2013/05/8-yr-old-afghan-bride-who-was-brutally-killed-by-her-mullah-husband-on-the-first-night-of-her-wedding/), on the other hand moslem "immigrants" are busy "Islamizing" different parts of the world to further propagate their neanderthal'ish ways.

The latest riots in Stockholm are case and point.

However there is NOT ONE mention of the riots in the Islamic world. It is business as usual there with their usual women slayings, child rapes, sectarian killings. Honestly, riots must seem rather tame to them, after their day to day lives. But even their outward facing media, which projects the image of the Islamic world, media like Al Gore's best buddy Al Jazeera, is completely complicit in this shameful cover up.

Attached are the images of the front page of Al Jazeera's website and the page dedicated to Europe. There is no mention of the stockholm riots in either.

Islam relies on conspiracy theories as expounded by illiterate mullahs from minarets during Friday prayers for its primary news source. And such a cult usually shies away from self-effacing truth.

A shameful state of affairs.
