I am taking you up on your offer of providing names for your list of "heroes". You should consider removing Thomas Edison and replacing him with Nikola Tesla. As smart as Edison was, he was barely qualified enough to hold Tesla's coat.
Thank you for your comment. I do have some questions.
Why would I remove Thomas Edison and replace him with Nikola Tesla? They are not the same person and nor are their accomplishments exact. I am having a hard time justifying why I am replacing one person for another. Why not just add Nikola Tesla?
Also, Under what circumstance would you call this person a hero? I have just read through a couple of pages and I have somewhat of a good idea, but I would like to hear why you nominate him.
Can you please elaborate what you said a bit more for me?
Thank you again for your comments and your time. :-)
Sure thing, where to start ... when Tesla was 20 years old he already spoke 4 languages, and was soon to add another 3. In the 1880's Edison employed Tesla and mocked him that Tesla's revolutionary induction engine would not work. Edison bet him (or offered depending on the version you believe) $10,000 if he could get it to work. Several months later Tesla showed him a fully working induction engine and Edison then stiffed him on their deal. So, point No. 1 : Edison is a dishonest liar. Edison then embarked on an anti-AC mission to discredit Tesla and to promote Edison's own patent rights on DC technology, the standard at that time. Edison even used one of Tesla's patents to produce an electric car to demonstrate how dangerous AC was. So, point No. 2 : Edison was a thief. Some poor helpless animals were also at the unfortunate mercy of Edison's demonstrations of the dangers of AC. point No. 3 : Edison was cruel.
Tesla on the other hand, was using fluorescent bulbs several decades before they were "invented". He tore up his contract with Westinghouse when they hit financial troubles and sold his patents for a mere $210k, foregoing the chance to become the world's first billionaire, thereby helping Westinghouse to stay in business. He wanted to provide free energy to the world but investor funding would not support him. He is credited with the inventions of fluorescent bulb, electron microscope, microwave oven, speedometer, neon lights and radar amongst other things. He had over 800 patents. Unlike Edison, Tesla was an original thinker whose technology notes are still used and read today eg. his work on cryogenic liquids deliver into the foundation for modern superconductors. I guess if they read those at night they can think of Edison when they turn the light on (sarc.).
So you can select a free thinking genius as a hero, or a lying, cheating thief. Your choice.
I have to admit that Thomas Edison was someone I debated with myself on listing.
But from what I read and understand, it looks like a personal matter that does not tie up all of Thomas Edison's Creditability. I wish I had more time to elaborate right now...please let me know if it is necessary.
I am only still debating though if Nikola Tesla can make my list of heros. I am considering him without bias and not considering with whatever runin he had with Thomas Edison.
You have given me some homework. Thank you for your comment.
I think the repercussions were more than "a personal matter". The overriding principal was that Edison wanted to keep DC because his companies manufactured all the equipment for the boosting transformers and he was making a lot of money from his monopoly ... Tesla wanted to give everyone free power. If Tesla had succeeded who would be the "hero" ? Oh how we need a Tesla in the oil market now ;-)
As I said, I am not detracting from Edison's fine achievements and his intelligence, but they are overshadowed by the lengths he went to keep his monopoly on DC power. Plus he electrocuted dogs publicly with AC to discredit Tesla - that will always piss off a dog lover like me. When you do your research look specifically for the extreme effort that Edison made to discredit Tesla and AC, it's difficult to find information because Edison had powerful friends and was very successful at his cause. Edison's efforts were so effective and far reaching that when the White House was wired for AC during President Benjamin Harrison's term, Harrison and his wife were so worried they refused to touch the switches and used the gas lights for the duration of his term !
