  • Gotta love Chad Pennington leading the turnaround in Miami. Even sweeter that the game that put them in the playoffs was a win over his former team. Nice! Have a happy and safe new year good sir.

Quoted comment by JessicaLDS: I guess I view this life differently being that everyone's terms are different. Some believe raping babies is life's terms, killing animals, cheating on your husband, taking pictures of sunsets, watching movies, jumping out of an airplane, etc. etc. I guess I believe and feel that this life actually has purpose and meaning with religion because I can focus on the afterlife when I see my parents brutually murdered by brother. (Did not actually happen, but does happen) I guess religion gives me hope when I get cancer at 23 and never smoked, drank, did drugs. I guess I have a peace of mind knowing that no matter what horrible thing happens to me in this life, I have something bigger, better, and more pleasing to yearn for than simply believing that this cruel world is all there is. Shit, if I believed that I would have blown my brains out long ago because who care right? This life didn't mean shit anyway....:)

How sad that in order to find meaning you have to pretend you'll live forever. Life isn't a giant pregame to something else. Life is here, now. Not then, later. Don't miss out! Peace!

My reply wasn't to prove that I find meaning in an afterlife...rather, I find meaning of this life by my belief that will be rewarded some day for the things I do while I'm here. I'm sorry the picture I painted was not clear enough I will try again. I believe it is easy for you to think this is all there is because nothing too terrible has happened to you (who knows maybe it has and that is why you are bitter). I think that until you experience something that is traumatically life-changing will you come to understand where happiness is found. My point in the scenerio was that if you were given the short end of the stick your entire life, how are you able to receive peace of mind? I know you'll probably agree that life isn't fair, but is there not an opportunity to expereince happiness EVER? How about this, you tell ME what our purpose for being here is...it is quite a simple question. Instead of telling your buddy how ignorant my belief system is...tell him how marvelous and enlightening yours is.(instead of life is here, now, not then later....don't miss out...) I'm sure if you were not able to walk and communicate your thoughts or ideas you might feel as if life missed you. Maybe you are the type of person who ONLY thinks about yourself and has not the ability to have compassion for others and their story; as long as it does not happen to you....your cool right?

Why do you have to believe in a supernatural carrot/stick reward/punishment system to find meaning in this life?

Why not find reward in the only life you're certain to have?

Why would you assume nothing too terrible has happened to me? You clearly know nothing about me. Do you always make such ignorant assumptions? (Of course you do, you believe in the supernatural, it's a retorical question.)

Happyness is found wherever you percieve it to be. It's a subjective value placment. So why place your happyness outside of verifiable reality?

There's always a silver-lining. Life is never so bad that it can't be worse. Untill you're dead.

"purpose" is subjective. It's up to each individual to find their own purpose. That you cannot find one without resorting to magical beleifs is very sad.

I don't need to tell Radio-Man about reality. I'm sure he has his own means to find happyness in reality.

    Who are YOU?
    Why are YOU here?
Try to answer your own questions instead of throwing out useless hypothetical guesses as to what I am about.

  • Quoted comment by JessicaLDS: I would like to think I always keep an "eternal perspective" most of the time, but it is easy to get caught up in this life especially during times of stress and worry. I am a woman and like most women we at times focus on the negative aspects vs. the positive. What about you? What about this life is so enjoyable that it requires you to believe this is it? Most people would consider you to be blessed being that you are happy with everything that has happened in your life and have been able to walk away with a peace of mind. I however, tend to become bitter. I have not had anything too horrible happen to me(knock on wood), but even when I see and hear the stories of others I tend to want to shoot people. I have a low tolerance for ignorance and people who could give a shit about anyone else, which unfortunately the world has many of these individuals:( and I often debate if having children is worth it.

How do you keep an "eternal perspective"? LOL

What does life being pleasurable or not have anything to do with finding the concept of eternal life totally without merrit?

For someone with a low tolerance for ignorance, why would you ignorantly believe in the supernatural?

  • I honestly believe EVERYTHING you do about religion. I know that it is hard to tell I do, but it is clear the religion has DONE nothing to help this world be better infact, it has created more wars, death, poverty, and separation. You know why? Because MAN was head of it and NOT God! It is clear that if there was a God He would not create such confusion and havoc...TRUST ME...He is orderly and simple. And the whole Heaven and Hell thing is bullshit...honestly, everyone will go some type of heaven and yes there will be a supreme level, but I guarantee that most of the pastor's pastors that preach about heaven and hell will not end up at the top! So at the end of the day...YOU WILL BE ALRIGHT, and infact, God understand why you believe this way because you actually see that religion is corrupt as many do not or overlook it. The only thing that bothers me about athesist is that they cannot leave the believers alone and let the live. I am not saying you do this always, but many do. It is kindof like Homosexuals flaunting their sexuality. I do nto go around telling everyone I love men....but I do. Same principle. Interesting quotes....both pro and anti...

"It is true, that a little philosophy inclineth man's mind to atheism, but depth in philosophy
bringeth men's minds about to religion."
    - Bacon, Francis

"We find the most terrible form of atheism, not in the militant and passionate struggle
against the idea of God himself, but in the practical atheism of everyday living, in
indifference and torpor. We often encounter these forms of atheism among those who are formally Christians."-I find this to be accurate...
    - Berdyaev, Nicolai A.

"Nobody talks so constantly about God as those who insist that there is no God."-that is the TRUTH...why is that?
    - Broun, Heywood

"Forth from his dark and lonely hiding-place, (Portentous sight!) the owlet Atheism, sailing
on obscene wings athwart the noon, drops his blue-fringed lids, and holds them close,
and hooting at the glorious sun in Heaven, cries out, Where is it?"
    - Coleridge, Samuel Taylor

"Atheism is easy in fair weather."-What I've been trying to say all along...
    - Dunn, Ronald

"I can't believe in the God of my Fathers. If there is one Mind which understands all things,
it will comprehend me in my unbelief. I don't know whose hand hung Hesperus in the sky,
and fixed the Dog Star, and scattered the shining dust of Heaven, and fired the sun, and
froze the darkness between the lonely worlds that spin in space." Also, what I was trying to convey with the evolution questions...
    - Kersh, Gerald

"An atheist is a man who believes himself an accident."-perfectly worded..don't you think?
    - Thompson, Francis

"An atheist is a man who looks through a telescope and tries to explain all that he can't
    see."

"Faith means not wanting to know what is true."
    - Nietzsche, Friedrich

"If I were not an atheist, I would believe in a God who would choose to save people on the
basis of the totality of their lives and not the pattern of their words. I think he would prefer
an honest and righteous atheist to a TV preacher whose every word is God, God, God,
and whose every deed is foul, foul, foul."-100% my view! This is why I know you will be alright:)
    - Asimov, Isaac

"I distrust those people who know so well what God wants them to do because I notice it
always coincides with their own desires."So true! "works don't save, ONLY grace.."
    - Anthony, Susan B.

"An atheist most embarrassing moment is when he feels profoundly thankful for something, but can't think of anyone to thank for it...."-has that ever happened to you?
    Mary Anne Vincent

"In some awful, strange, paradoxical way, atheists tend to take religion more seriously than the practitioners."

"Millions of innocent men, women, and children, since the introduction of Christianity, have been burned, tortured, fined, and imprisoned, yet we have not advanced one inch toward uniformity. What has been the effect of coercion? To make one half of the world fools and the other half hypocrites."-Amen, could not have said it better!!!
    Thomas Jefferson

"I believe in God... just in case. It's like there's some list somewhere and you don't want to be on it. I don't want to say THERE'S NO GOD! and then die and say, Oh, Hi... Is there some kind of community service I can do?" -amusing but true...what do I have to lose?
    Mark Maron

"In no instance have . . . the churches been guardians of the liberties of the people."-precisely:)
    James Madison
