You are lucky you were not hauled off to jail. The Supreme Court has already directly ruled on this: it is legal within about 100 miles of the border.
It doesn't matter what the constitution says - as long as the Supreme Court reads it differently than you do.

lawyer advice: Tell the border patrol agent you disagree with what they are doing and that you will answer only the questions that are required by statute/law.
Actually asking whether you are being detained removes the cops argument in court that you consented to violations of your constitutional rights by acting like a sheep.
Check points are constitutional.
You're not a jerk for being "rude," cops intimidate people into violations of their rights daily. One Supreme Court cases talked about a cop who would search cars "with consent" after giving the ticket when people were free to do some 1200 times a year by not letting them leave until they agreed to it.

Bravo! Yes it seems rude, and yes there are enemies, but really the fact that she let you pass shows that it was excessive and probably illegal. People please read George Orwell's 1984, the slippery slope of government control is creeping up on you. Liberal or Conservative, you should be very careful and not just blindly trust those who are in power.
