Mitt Romney Says Federal Disaster Relief Is Immoral
Part of channel(s): United States presidential election 2012 (current event)

Romney in 2011: Shut down FEMA, let the states handle it. In June 2011, Mitt Romney said in a Republican primary debate that he "absolutely" thinks FEMA should be shut down, and disaster relief moved to the states.

CNN's John King asked Romney if he thinks disaster relief would be better handled by the states. "Absolutely," Romney said. "Every time you have an occasion to take something from the federal government and send it back to the states, that's the right direction. And if you can go even further, and send it back to the private sector, that's even better."

"Including disaster relief, though?" King asked.

"We cannot — we cannot afford to do those things without jeopardizing the future for our kids," Romney said. "It is simply immoral, in my view, for us to continue to rack up larger and larger debts and pass them on to our kids, knowing full well that we'll all be dead and gone before it's paid off. It makes no sense at all."

  • The title of this video is misleading and the description even admits to it being misleading. Mitt Romney did not say disaster relief is immoral, he said the result of it is. Not saying I agree or have any opinion or concern on this matter, or statement, just pointing out some idiocy.

  • Romney stands against government federal waste, clearly you advocate for it. Romney wants the states to have the money, not the Feds. Clearly this concept is too advanced for you to comprehend. It matters not, your messiah is history.

  • What Romney really says. It's not whether aid will come from the Feds, it's how it's done. Right now the system is full of inefficiencies that Romney want to fix.

"I believe that FEMA plays a key role in working with states and localities to prepare for and respond to natural disasters," Romney said in a statement supplied by his campaign Wednesday. "As president, I will ensure FEMA has the funding it needs to fulfill its mission, while directing maximum resources to the first More..

  • Can't say I disagree with Mitt.

A big bloated federal government is rarely the right approach.

FEMA never existed before 1979, and if you read the scary shit that its prepared to do going forward, its a bit over the top, and scary if you are the paranoid type.

So, Yeah, I'm kind of with Mitt on this.

  • It is....because what quantifies as a disaster for a town might not qualify you for the Fed. Leave it to the individual states, like it fuckin should be.

Uh huh, our Governments idea of disaster relief is, "Send 'em in guns blazing and steal private property, then hand out some water or something, I guess."

    • @ggppgg
Actually, its not better than nothing.
Expecting and getting nothing from the fed is preferable.

    • @BurkaBurka The reason FEMA failed at Katrina was because Bush had changed the operations of the agency to deal with terrorism and civil unrest insted of disaster relief. They had forgotten what they are for, so they did not have procedures in place to deal with a disaster. That is why they went around consfiscating weapons. Their priorities were all screwed up. They could help, if they were just prepared to.

    • @wellybub Even more reason for disaster relief to be placed in the states hands instead of the giant bureaucracy known as the United Stated Federal Government.

  • gregsto is obviously a typical demotarded docuhebag.

"Truth? What's that?", wonders the douchebag.

  • That's why Romney was so quiet today. Politically, Romney is so full of crap and he knows it.

Romney seems like a great family man and provider to his family. He should stick to that and leave America alone.

  • Wanting relief efforts to be handled by the state doesn't mean Romney wants to do away with aid all together. He's advocated state-run programs and organizations throughout his entire campaign, and for good reason to. What a dumb fucking title.

    • @Walmartyr
So many states can't even fucking balance their own state budgets. What makes you think they can properly handle disaster relief funding?

    • @John_Matrix They haven't even been given the chance to. The FED has and we've seen the downside of allowing that to occur (Katrina 05')I can't guarantee it will be better, but you can't guarantee it would be worse.

Why not try it? We TRIED a black guy in office and now look...

Give someone else a shot. Someone who has never known failure in his life, unlike other Repubs.

  • As I commented yesterday:

"Not sure if it's immoral, but consider this:

Less than one month after Hurricane Katrina, private donations surpassed the $1 billion mark, most of which went to private organizations who quickly provided relief.

FEMA gave out $6.3 billion in taxpayer money, with nearly a quarter of the money going to scammers.

    FEMA:
    -gave money to prison inmates
-sent money to people who said they LIVED in cemeteries of Post Office Boxes
-reimbursed people for rent even tho More..
