Waikato Crane Accident - Ooops
Crane accident New Zealand, 200-ton Terex - All Terrain crane, set up on a river bank lifting the second beam of the new Huruhuru Cycleway bridge into place. As the ground starts to give way, the outrigger pads sink, and THAR SHE GOES!!! Amazing no one stopped this lift before the accident...plenty of clues indicating what was about to happen. No further info.

Very lucky driver.Nothing landed on the cab.If it had sunk forward, toward the bridge, the weight of the crane may have crushed/trapped him.I bet he shat his pants.Poor bloke that did'nt know which way to run might require some clean underwear aswell.

He did well to rotate his cab round at the right moment, otherwise he`d have a bit of a headache.

They should have hired some Mexicans. Seriously, they could have pulled that off with a dozen milk crates, a few homemade ropes and a VW Beetle.

They were definitely watching it. The foreman on the ground was looking at the cracks. Prob hoping it would hold up.

Crane collapses, driver escapes injury
1:24 PM Thursday Aug 5, 2010
A crane operator had a lucky escape when it collapsed at a work site in West Auckland today.
The crane collapsed on the banks of the Huruhuru Creek near the Triangle Drive Bridge by Lincoln Road, Henderson, late this morning.
A witness, who declined to give his name, told NZPA it appeared the crane collapsed after the bank of the creek subsided.
He said the driver was uninjured.
Police and fire service staff were in attend More..

That's an experienced operator. He obviously noticed the crane shifting back (he'd had to know -- these machines have very accurate warnings for weight limitations and levelling) and instead of jumping for his life, his training kicked in as he turned the boom (to shift its weight) up hill to try to save the vehicle. Too late though. the damage was done.

I thought that he turned the boom so that he would end up on top-side of the wreck. Who knows? probably both.

I'd bet they had it on video cuz the contractor knew it wouldn't be safe, but the engineer did. One way to get out of lawsuits.
