General Motors' two auto assembly plants in Oshawa, Ont., shut down Tuesday due to lack of parts, as the effects from a United Auto Workers strike in the U.S. spread in Canada.

GM shut down its Oshawa Plant 1, which builds the Chevrolet Impala and Monte Carlo, at 3 a.m. ET. Plant 2, the maker of the Pontiac Grand Prix and Buick Allure, shut down at 2:30 p.m. ET, following the end of the day shift.

UAW members stand on a picket line outside General Motors Pittsburgh Metal Center in West Mifflin, Pa., after walking off the job on Monday.
(Gene J. Puskar/Associated Press) "The car plant will be down until the strike is resolved," said GM spokesman Stew Low.

The auto plants employ about 5,600 people.

The company's GM truck plant in Oshawa, which employs about 4,000 people, is reported to have a three-day inventory of parts to keep it running.

GM's Windsor transmission plant shut down Monday. That plant employs about 1,300 people.
