In real life you don't have exact radar location on a heads up display telling you where the enemy is. You cannot take 10 bullets and keep champing. Usually one 7.62 round and you're down.
Reality is, Machine-Gunners are there to make the enemy keep their head down and stop shooting at you and your friends. By spraying in the general direction where fire is coming from, it works.
