A gas cylinder used to fill balloons exploded in the early afternoon in front of the 2 brothers by the zoo in Recife, in the north of the city. Four people were injured and two of them had their legs amputated by the explosion.The Fire Department said the accident happened at around 14h, at which time the zoo was full because of the celebration of Children's Day
Weekends and holidays, the square in front of the park tends to be full of vendors with drums and gas cylinders. According to a spokesperson for the zoo, the explosion generated tumult outside the park and some people ran in panic. The movement, however, remained normal throughout the afternoon, according to the advice.
Marcelo de Paula Santos, 42, and Vanderson Jose da Silva, 19, were taken to the Hospital Getúlio Vargas, in the west of Recife. The Fire Department reported that they had legs amputated as a result of the explosion.
A spokesperson for the hospital said only that their condition is serious and that both were taken to the operating room. José André da Silva, 37, was taken to the Hospital of the Restoration, in the city center, with second degree burns on the legs. Geraldo da Conceição, 18, was taken to the UPA Unit (Emergency Department) of Caxangá in the west, in the same situation
