Man jailed after brutally beating his dog

ORTING, Wash. – An Orting man is accused of brutally beating his own dog with a metal handle bar because, he said, she didn't like the sound of his motorcycle.

Orting Police received 911 calls early Sunday morning.

The calls brought them to a house where they heard sounds of struggle coming from the garage.

When the door opened, a bloody dog ran out, teeth shattered and face cut.

Blood was found on the floor, on walls, on the carpet, on the tool box and in an alcove.

Her owner, Thomas Pettit, was placed in hand-cuffs and arrested.

Veterinarian Dr. Kathy Sheeran treated the 4-year-old Doberman who police say suffered a beating at the hands of her owner.

"She likes to play, she likes to give kisses," she said.

Officers ay Pettit told them he didn't like that Lily was frightened of the noise from his motorcycle. He allegedly hit the dog with handle bars in her face.

Her teeth were shattered and had to be pulled. Her cuts had to be treated.

"Think about a sweet dog like she is being hit in the face with a pipe because she's afraid is disgusting," said Sheeran.

Police say Pettit admitted slapping and throwing Lily.

Lily will require a couple thousand dollars in vet care. It's a cost Dr. Sheeran says she's willing to absorb to give Lily a safe start on a new future.

"What we all hope is that she gets to be in a loving home, because she's just a fabulous dog," she said.

There's no word yet when or if Lily will be up for adoption. The criminal case still has to run its course.

Pettit is being held on a charge of first-degree animal cruelty. His bond was set at $30,000.
