correct. Also what he fails to mention is silencers are illegal as Hell without special permit (try and get one) and if you fool with em, you're asking for hard time. He wants to sell you some INFORMATION, which is legal, right now, but actually build one and you are an instant criminal. And from the sound of it, i think he must be firing 22 short, since it was so quiet to begin with.

A silencer permit is not difficult to get whatsoever. If you have no record it is a matter of a $200 tax stamp and some paperwork.

I was not aware of that. Obviously you're not in California. I dont think silencers ought to be a big deal, yet they are in many states. What civilian would need one, and why?

It's not quite that simple because many states have their own laws banning suppressors.
Also, you are not getting a license to simply own and use silencers. Each silencer you own has to be registered and made by an approved Type II weapons manufacturer.
Having a homemade silencer, as suggested in this video, is what is illegal, even if you posses a permit.

Ah, good point. I forgot how bad it is in the Peoples Republic of California.
As to a civvie "needing" one, its simply a matter of being able target practice without annoying your neighbors. They are almost never used in a crime, and aren't that hard to build anyway I'm not so sure why the need to outlaw them anyway. It is far easier to build one than the gun or ammo so having the law doesn't really stop anyone except those who wouldn't be inclined to do anything bad with one anywa More..

Those homemade supressors are illegal as hell.
You can get an 11 or 12,ooo foot per second spring air rifle with a suppressor for small game. One pump and fire.
My Gamo CSI with gas spring is very quiet if I use heavy pellets and can shoot through medium game at over 100 feet.
If I use too light a pellet then it breaks the sound barrier and makes a loud pop.
I can shoot this in my yard or most anywhere without getting into trouble.

For one, its called a SUPPRESSOR, and yes class three felony to posses without proper paper work($200 stamp, as eluded to earlier) No you don't need 22 shorts to make work, the more powerful the better on semi's.

must not make that many suppressors, there's no such thing as a silencer, someone who makes one i would think would know that.
and with a .22 all you need is an empty water or coke bottle some tissue paper and tape, fill the bottle with the tissue, and tape the empty bottle over the end of the barrel, making sure its completely sealed and the only thing youll hear is the hammer

Cheap, and only good for two shots.
Well, i have seen one made out of a metal vacume tube, a pen tube, seven two litre bottle caps (baffles) steel wool, and some rubber spacers. Seen it go through 500 rounds of sub sonic .22, never blew or had any lost accuracy.
In the end, the types that can handle 5.56, 7.62 and 9mm cost only fifteen to twenty-five dollars in quality material, then you just need a small workshop.
Now, why would anyone want a suppresor? Easy on the ears, and people More..

of course larger calibers dont agree with that method, but its cheap its fast, and all suppressors are only good for so many shots, the bottle method is cheaper and works the same if not better. but only with the smaller calibers
