Knockdowns are exceedingly rare in Olympic boxing. Japan's Satoshi Shimizu knocked down Azerbaijan's Magomed Abdulhamidov five times
in the third and final round of their bantamweight bout yesterday. And
yet, the judges scored the round in favor of the one who spent more time
on the canvas than on his feet.
"I was shocked by the final scores. He fell down so many times," Shimizu said. "Why didn't I win? I don't understand."
After Abdulhamidov was awarded the 22-17 victory over Shimizu, the
uproar began. Fans rained boos from the stands, and Japanese officials
immediately lodged a protest. It was, by any account, the biggest
competitive disgrace of the Olympics so far. And there's reason to ask
if this was more than the usual Olympic boxing incompetence, but rather
something more sinister.
Last September, BBC Newsnight presented evidence that Azerbaijan had paid millions of dollars in an international boxing organization,
in return for a guarantee that two Azerbaijanis would win gold medals
at these London Olympics. They found documents showing a $9 million bank
transfer, funneled through Switzerland, to a boxing organization owned
by AIBA, which oversees Olympic boxing. Whistleblowers reported that the
money came from an Azerbaijan government minister, and were strictly a
cash-for-medals exchange.
"Ivan boasted to a few of us that there was no need to worry about
World Series Boxing having the coin to pay its bills. As long as the
Azeris got their medals, WSB would have the cash."
Another said that Mr Khodabakhsh came in and said: "We are safe now -
Azerbaijan came in - we have to give them medals for that."
"He was talking about gold medals in London in return for millions of
dollars of secret payments," the insider added. "Medals are being sold
so blatantly it's amazing."
Azerbaijan denied the allegations, and an AIBA committee found them groundless.
(The $9M was deemed to be a "purely commercial investment.") But here
we are! Azerbaijan's Abdulhamidov was awarded a win he didn't come close
to earning.
This one has a happy ending, sort of. Late last night, AIBA officials upheld Japan's appeal, and awarded the bout to Shimizu. Their statement:
After reviewing the video of Bout #105 involving Bantamweights
Satoshi Shimizu (Japan) and Magomed Abdulhamidov (Azerbaijan), the
Competition Jury made the following decision:
- The boxer from Azerbaijan fell down six (6) times during the 3rd
round. According to our rules, the Referee should have counted at least
three (3) times. In this case, following the AIBA Technical &
Competition Rules, the decision should have been RSC (Referee Stop
Contest);
- Therefore the protest lodged by the Japanese corner is accepted and the result of this bout overturned.
AIBA officials will consider on Thursday morning whether to sanction the referee of this bout.
Shimizu moves on. Abdulhamidov goes home. The Turkmenistani ref may
be punished for not stopping the fight. The judges? Nothing happens to
them. Olympic boxing remains a joke.

@elmerfudd13 I dont think it's really cheating it is just how amateur boxing is scored it's not like pro boxing ,big punches are secondary to landing many more softer punches so it is quite easy to tap your way thru the fight and win on points, even tho you have hardly scratched your opponent.
the ref is at fault here it should have never gone to a decision but instead should have been stopped after the 3rd knock down.

@wellpissedliveleak If i remember right he was knocked down 6 or 7 times. 3 of the knockdowns he'd gotten up and was keeping himself up by holding onto the ropes during the count. To me this is a clear cut case of cheating.

@stirgy It's inevitable. I'm sure in the first Olympics the "wrestling" was nothing like Greco of today. It was probably a lot closer to actual fighting. Hopeful they're not naked though when they bring the sport back to the Olympics.

@outsidelooknn It does seem like nobody noticed when boxing died. I'm trying to remember the last time boxing aired on free tv in America? It must have been Tyson in the mid 90's?
The champions used to be household names. Now they're practically anonymous. I don't know who the HW title holder is (I assume it's one of the Klitchko brothers). Ali and Tyson were the most famous athletes on Earth, and today I doubt the average under-30 male can name any title holders. They probably know Georges and More..

@harv The sad thing is, even if the champions won legitimately, you have to question it. Because corrupt decisions anywhere along the chain of competition throws everything off.
The entire competition is pointless now. It wasn't just this Japanese fighter they tried to rob. They're robbing all the competitors.

It's a disgrace. Been watching it over the last couple of days. Some decisions don't make sense. Boxing is riven with blatant match fixing by judges. The betting fraternity have a huge sway over decisions as money has to be changing hands for a fight to be judged in such a way. Why do Bulgarian boxers taking part in competitions in Bulgaria always win? Same applies to matches held in Turkey. It'll never be right until a fairer system is put in place.

Why do we even have the Olympics? With over 1 billion people in China, they should be dominating every event lol
As for boxing, judging has been corrupt for years. Same goes for figure skating. Figure skating has changed it's criteria for judging but in the end it's all fixed

@YesImadick How exactly is it that the Chinese should dominate every event? There are a lot of people in Africa too, and, magically none of them win in swimming competitions. There are a lot more factors than just population numbers.

@ST0N3PONY Africa is divided into their respective coutries. It is not a total continent population. China has over a billion in it's country
Yes there are factors involved. All I'm saying is that your odds are better at winning medals because you have the greatest amount of athletes due to population, so it is relevant
If you look at the medal standings for the last few Olympics, results are the same. The higher the population, the more medals

@YesImadick Well, what you did was point out that China isn't winning all the medals, despite having the biggest population. It makes no sense that Africa being a country or a continent would have anything to do with anything. Black people dominate sprinting, and completely avoid swimming. It has nothing to do with nationality.
The Chinese do well in Gymnastics because of body-type. They don't compete at the top in Gymnastics simply because there are a lot of Chinese people.

@pauliec17 Boxing is just sooo corrupt it's unbelievable. I'm sure it's always been shady. Organized crime has probably been involved since the beginning. But it seems like they've stopped caring though. People can see which way the wind is blowing, and they're trying to squeeze out as much money as they can before it's gone. Like Manny's last fight, another bogus lame boring decision. Why? Because if Manny won, there would be no rematch, and there would be one less big pay-day left. That's why More..
