Missing Afghan Army Night-Vision Goggles May Aid Taliban
Part of channel(s): Afghanistan (current event)

By David Lerman - Jun 19, 2012 7:32 PM ET

U.S. and Afghan forces have lost track of hundreds of night-vision goggles used to hunt the Taliban, raising the odds of the high-technology eyewear falling into enemy hands, according to the Pentagon’s inspector general.

A lack of adequate supervision of the goggles, which were purchased for the Afghan Army and police, means U.S. and Afghan soldiers “may be at greater security risk during night missions in Afghanistan,” according to a report from the inspector general dated June 18.

“Improving accountability will decrease vulnerabilities to theft or loss of night-vision devices,” Jacqueline Wicecarver, assistant inspector general for acquisition and contract management, said in a memorandum accompanying the report.

Defense and NATO officials, Afghan security forces and defense contractors “did not maintain complete accountability” for 7,157 night-vision goggles and spare parts purchased for Afghan forces, the report found. Those goggles are now “more vulnerable to theft or loss,” the GAO said.

The report cited hundreds of missing serial numbers, 518 “discrepancies” and 75 goggles that were “unaccounted for during our physical inventory.”

Defense officials said they would “continue to improve accountability procedures,” according to the report.

  • Just like Vietnam, the locals are not trained no where near enough to take control of their own country

  • It doesn't matter all that much. They use special batteries you can't buy in afghanistan. Dead battery, dead goggles.

  • What a surprise.
Admit it the US can loose battles but wins wars against conventional foes, but against insurgents the US never looses a battle but never wins a war.

    • @rozza2012 You can't win against an insurgency without killing everyone. The outcry from the pussies of this world would be too much for any politician to go that route, and that's a travesty.

    • @TheEvilDead Oh I see, those who would object to a mass killing of hundreds od thousands of civilians would be "pussies". International law was written by and for pussies. The Geneva Convention too. War crimes and genocide are the only successful way of taking care of the problem.
What if you do a mass killing only to realize that some of the bad elements you were after got away (very likely) and you're back to square one with all these deaths you're responsible for and that were in v More..

  • The cavecunts are too thick to know how to use them, they will probably think they are sex aids and try and pump them rather than their goats and donkeys.

  • Doesn't matter. As soon as the two double A batteries run out the Taliban are tits up.

  • Hahahhaha........

Just amazing how a country with so many safeguards and professionals manages to lose a whole slew of NVG's.

  • Why don't the goggles have a timeout that needs a new code. We can do it for software. Why not for expensive night vision goggles.

  • We are fucking giving these savages NVGs?!?!?!?

What the fuck is wrong with the people in charge? Who makes these fucking stupid decisions?

Whoever made that decision should be forced out of the Army right fucking now.

This stupid ass decision will kill NATO troops for sure.

These motherfuckers sell their boots and gear as soon as they get it.

    • @Martyr_Machine while I agree afghan army should be limited to the technology they receive. But I believe the afghans paid for these their selfs and we only supported the purchase. Not sure that we could have stopped them from getting nvg's. Its not like they are nukes. Besides the iraqi army had nvg's as well. Also there is no telling how many pairs have been lost or blown out of vehicles hit by ieds. These fall into the wrong hands Im sure.

    • @Marine5811

Where do you think they got the money? It was just a shell game with funds we gave them.

      The US:
      "Here is some money, Karzai."

      Karzai:
"Thanks, I am going to buy 500 NVGs with that money now."

      The US:
"Thanks for the prompt payment. Please don't lose these; we violated our own embargo in this deal so don't fuck it up."

      Karzai:
"We will treat them like newborn babies, I promise."

NVGs blown up by IEDs will not function.

    • @Martyr_Machine I never said the nvgs were blown up. I said blown out of vehicles. Im not sure if you have ever seen a vehicle get hit by an ied but not all of them do a lot of damage. What they can do though is send all your gear hundreds of feed in the air and then back down to where you can't find it. Ive seen weapons, ammo, packs etc get lost after an ied strike. You don't have time to look for that shit but it is the first place the locals will be to try and find stuff to salvage. Also it i More..

    • @Marine5811

I am in a route clearance battalion and we just got back in december. You are right, most strikes are a mobility kill at best. I can say this though; if someone is stupid enough to store their NVGs outside the vehicle then they should/will be held liable for their loss.

If NVGs are in a strike and they are thrown in the air, 99% of the time they will not fucntion. Many of them break without any impact it seems...

It is against the law unless you ARE the government. They can do wh More..

    • @Martyr_Machine ok, I have just always heard there is a license that can be obtained to be able to export them. Maybe I am wrong. Im not saying the nvgs were stored on the outside of the vehicle. I served in fallujah iraq in 07 and then again in 09. We all drove humvees except our lead vehicle was an MRAP. The doors would literally get blown off of vehicles and everything sucked out. We even had a guy literally get lost for a few minutes because he was ripped out of the rear driver door at the b More..

  • Well if anyone finds one, I'd love a good class 3 or class 4 NVG and HD FLIR camera. That way I can capture nocturnal wildlife on video like a boss.
