VILLA RICA, Ga. -- A routine traffic stop ended with an officer being dragged 60 feet and run over.
The officer amazingly escaped with minor injuries and was said to be recovering at home Tuesday.
Villa Rica police gave Channel 2 Action News reporter Jodie Fleischer the dash cam video from the incident. The video shows the driver pulling away and the officer hanging on until More.. he's run over by the car's back wheel.
Police said Sgt. Chet Long with the Villa Rica Police Department stopped Marko Burton, 28, for speeding near the intersection of Highways 61 and 78 in Carroll County late Monday night.
"Cut your car off," Long can be heard saying on the dash cam video.
The driver listens, but then the officer suspects something else.
"How much marijuana (have) you been smoking?" Long asked.
"I didn't smoke none," said Burton.
Long ordered Burton to unlock the door, and when he didn't, Long reached in to the car just as dispatch called back to check on him.
The officer's microphone went silent as the car ran him over with its back tire. Witnesses ran to help him.
"One woman actually saw him drive up the road and came back and went into the apartment complex, which helped us out a great deal," said Capt. Scott Parker with the Villa Rica Police Department.
Within 25 minutes, officers found Burton in the Hampton Court Apartments.
Burton has been charged with assaulting the officer and a drug charge.
Long will spend a few days recovering at home and then will spend a week on light duty.
"We're very fortunate that he's OK and it's one of the worst calls you get as a police chief is one of your officers being down and injured," said Villa Rica Police Chief Michael Mansour. "He's doing great, in good spirits says he's not hurting as much as he expected to be.
