Children's TV - 1975, Space 1999,UFO
This is what I grew up watching.
Space 1999 came out of the axing of "UFO", both by Gerry Anderson (Thunderbirds).

"UFO" was axed because the TV controllers at the time couldn't work out who the audience was.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UFO_%28TV_series%29
Space 1999 featured deep themes, contemplation and encounters with higher beings.
'UFO' had explosions, sex, drinking and smoking at work, sexy moonbase gals, girls stripping on Moonbase, killing aliens, more sex, parties, orgies.
I missed UFO, but Space 1999 was also good.
Children's tv, 1975.

This children's TV was closely followed by the 'Wombles'.
A bunch of early environmentalists who picked up trash.

So there you go.
It's 1975, and you have the choice between humans playing sexy purple-wigged Moonbase strippers killing aliens on sight, or stop-motion furry toys picking up trash like all good environmentalists would.
Children's TV, 1975.

My brother and I would sit glued to the screen,
eating a mixed bag of sweets that cost about 10p

She did all the fashion work.
Great partnership.
The two broke up during Space 1999.
Very sad affair.

He's 83 now, but "still standing" and working in film.
Greatest props to Gerry Anderson.
p.s. Where's the fuckin' Knighthood???

I enjoyed both those programs as a kid. That changed when I went to see Star Wars at the theater one Saturday afternoon in 1977. I got home, turned on Space 1999 on the television, and thought "This poor show just got instantly outdated."

Yeah. But it was a pain because sometimes the dinosaurs would attack and the show ended early.

@bandit1200 Space 1999 was definitely not a kids TV series, although I must admit I did watch it when I was 8 and this scene gave me nightmares for a week

That's a pretty intense link.
This only compounds my fears of pre-formed rubber objects.
Of draught excluders.

Quite amazing really.

1999 , damn rights. great show. The premise of course, quite a stretch. Nuke stockpile on the Moon blows up, throws the Moon out of orbit around Earth.
They never get into the terrible result for Earth, no more tides, changing the rotational speed..
If I was a TV producer and could get make the premise work... this would be a fantastic show to bring back, in a BSG style.
