  • Spent 31 years in the AF, and I STILL regard the Blue Angels as better than the Thunderchickens.
Oh, they were ok "back in the day", but after they played follow the leader into the Nevada desert floor one day, they've pulled back perceptibly and are now the worlds most expensive ambassadors of safety....while the Blue Angels continue to fly the razor's edge in spite of numerous accidents over the years.

Don't get me wrong, they're good.....and you sure as hell wouldn't catch ME doing More..

    • @Bogenschutze neither the thunderbirds or blue angels have ever been able to put on a show as good as many european display tema because of the lack of numbers.

the only thing the thunderbirds and blue angels have going for them is that they fly front line fighters.

this in itself has it's pros n cons. pros being that they are awesome and the flight envalope of the aircraft is better. the are also larger aircraft and are not as well suited to close formation flying.

the best display team is p More..

    • @Bogenschutze
Will agree with you on the comparison of the B.A's and the Tbirds...

The Blues are the rough hockey players while the Birds are fucking figure skaters...
Still proud that my uncle was the CMO for them right after the lawn dart incident

    • @yourboss Blue Angels, but they're American too so I'm sure you'll more of your standard dumb-ass remarks to make.

    • @ST0N3PONY not really.

firstly, my remarks are not dumbass. they make perfect sense.

      allow me to explain.

some european display teams have a large number of aircraft, normally advanced jet trainers, or aircraft of similar type take up the role. small and maneuverable, they are perfect for the role.

the blue angels fly the front line fighter/attack aircraft the f-18.

even by todays standards, it's big for a fighter. not the ideal aircraft for formation flying.

are the USN pilots worse than More..

    • @yourboss Yes the Red Arrows are awesome. But your criteria is a bunch of nonsense. The blue angels are somehow less impressive because their aircraft are bigger...

I know the F-16 is an American fighter, so there's not a lot of point discussing it with you. But, nothing can out-turn the latest F-16s.

    • @ST0N3PONY the f-18 not being a small aircraft isn't the only criteria i outlines, pony.

it's size compared tot he BAE hawk is a very real disadvantage for a display team. that was one point.

the other point i mentioned was the fact that the blue angels only have 6 aircraft. thus the variables in terms of display maneuvers they have is far less.

the red arrows can do more, together in the sky because of this. it's more about the numbers than the aircraft size as i already mentioned that the U More..

    • @yourboss I'll try and find the article I was reading. It was about sustained 9G turns.

But, we're not comparing F-16s to rafale's or migs. etc.

Airshows are what Migs are built for. It's what their low-speed maneuvering is useful for. I still don't see them used in this kind of high-level formation stuff.
