City to pay $4 million to bus crash victim

QUINCY, ILL. -- The city of Quincy settled a 2010 lawsuit with a man who became paralyzed from the waist down in a crash involving a Quincy Transit bus.Nicholas Hanson, 29, of New London, Mo. was injured in the Nov. 10, 2010 crash near the intersection of South 36th Street and South Holford Drive. The city agreed to pay $4 million for the injuries Hanson suffered in the crash. The February 2010 lawsuit requested from $3.5 million to $5.5 million in damages.Hanson sued the city, bus driver Becky Dawson, and Taussa Roney, the driver of the vehicle in which Hanson was a passenger."It's a bad situation for not only the the bus driver that didn't want to be involved in an accident that morning, but certainly for our client who wasn't leaving his residence going to Vatterott College that morning thinking he was going to be coming home in a wheelchair," Hanson's attorney, Jim Hansen, said. The lawsuit said that both the bus driver and the driver of the vehicle carrying Hanson were driving too fast for slick road conditions when the collision occurred.

  • So victim in this was passenger of the car out of control and yet he sued both drivers and won. Interesting.

    • @Romans909 Didn't win, the city settled. I think they should have taken this one to court since they settled for what the plaintiff was asking. I doubt a jury would have awarded them millions from the city, maybe something for partial liability but it would have been the other driver who would have shouldered most of the blame.

    • @huey2323 Yup, clearly not the bus driver or city's fault, but they settled, so it's their own chicken-shit fault. What made them think they'd lose $4million at trial over this when the other driver skidded into oncoming traffic?

    • @dorbie

City don't give a shit. It's the tax payers money. All they care about is not having to waste their precious time in court.

  • This asshole who is now on a wheelchair is a leech & so are his lawyers...Bus driver is in his lane & it was clearly the vehicle driver's fault in which he was travelling..so the SUV's insurance company should be responsible. only good outcome for the tax payers from this is that the greedy leech won't be able to mastrubate anymore.

  • HOW IS THE CITY BUS DRIVER LIABLE AT ALL IN THIS CASE?!?!?!

The car clearly crossed the line in such a short amount of time that there was no time to react even on a clear day.

Frivolous bullshit if you ask me. Thank you Mr. Hanson, the taxpayers just got raped because of the driver of the vehicle you were in.

    • @huey2323 When a half-decent lawyer sues they sue EVERYONE involved. The city fucked up awarding this, but maybe the council know this injured kid or something, or maybe there's a lot of community sentiment in his favor. I doubt they would have lost this lawsuit to the tune of $4million but IANAL.

    • @dorbie That just blows my mind that with video evidence such as this it would be pretty easy in the city's defense case that the driver of Hanson's vehicle was clearly negligible. Would the city be liable if there were a death in this case? IANAL either

  • a misjudgment on his part(guy in the wheelchair) you always have to yield to oncoming traffic and proceed when safe, and judging by the video he clearly wasn't paying attention and just turned without looking -- 28mph is unsafe? It's unfortunate that he was paralyzed but gimme a fucking break.

  • Bullshit lawsuit, the bus driver was only doing 30 mph and it was the car that the plaintif occupied that skidded or turned in front of the bus with no warning.

My heart goes out to the taxpayers of Quincy, and the bus driver since she did absolutely nothing wrong...but not this fucker.

  • The dumb fuck deserves to be paralyzed if he is the type to sue over an obvious no fault accident. What a crock of shit. And people wonder why EVERYTHING (Including taxes) is so expensive. It's dirt bag lawyers and dirt bag people. Enjoy pooping into a bag through your stomach for the rest of your life Nikky. What a joke.

  • LMFAO @ US justice system. A bus driver drives her route, and some piece of shit driver spins her stupid car into her bus, and the bus driver and the city gets sued. In normal countries the bus driver would not be at fault with anything. It was an unfortunate accident.

  • How the fuck does a judge watch this video and then determine that this was in any way the fault of the bus driver? If he had run into a tree should he sue the city for having planted it there?

The legal system in North America is completely fucked. Why can't an accident just be an accident? It completely sucks balls to be paralyzed as a result of this, but shit happens and its the risk you take every time you drive, especially in crappy conditions.

  • I’m sorry that the passenger in the car was hurt, but it was the driver of the car that lost control. The speed of the bus was from 24 to 27 mph and that’s too fast for wet roads? It looks like another scumbag lawyer went for the “deep pockets”.

    Posted Apr-13-2012 By

    • @drumline Pfft, the car driver didn't even lose control. He deliberately made a left turn in front of a bus -- a bus that was in plain view long before the turn was made.

  • Damn this is bulshit. The bus driver is not guilty , he had only seconds to react. He was definetely not driving too fast. Only in America a person get this kind of sums for such an accident.

  • 100% the driver's fault. And now the citizen have to pay for this idiot?
Why would the city be involved into this?!
