NASA completed another successful test of the Orion crew
vehicle's parachutes high above the Arizona desert in preparation for
the spacecraft's orbital flight test in 2014. Orion will carry
astronauts deeper into space than ever before, provide emergency abort
capability, sustain the crew during space travel and ensure a safe
re-entry and landing. A C-17 plane dropped a test version of Orion from
an altitude of 25,000 feet above the U.S. Army Yuma Proving Ground in
southwestern Arizona.
This test used an Orion craft that mimics
the full size and shape of the spacecraft. The main objective of the
latest drop test was to determine how the entire system would respond if
one of the three main parachutes inflated too quickly. Since 2007, the
Orion program has conducted a vigorous parachute air and ground test
program and provided the chutes for NASA's successful pad abort test in
2010. All of the tests build an understanding of the chutes' technical
performance for eventual human-rated certification.

It is amazing how much stuff they can cram into that tiny space on top of the spacecraft. Two drogue shoots slow it, two more slow it further, three more pull out the main canopy. All that fit into a space the size of a phone booth.
They actually vaccume pack all that in there - the need to squeeze out every speck of space they can. Simply amazing.
Now, if only I could get my wife's closet into the Nasa cram-a-lot program, that would be great!

@FlREF0X A nice fart after some enchiladas with beans would kill the whole crew.

@Wirikuta
Maybe enchiladas with beans provide a way to land astronauts safely without a chute.

This shuttle was overpriced, and was getting more and more expensive each launch.
This can get the job done better than the shuttle at a cheaper rate.

Here's more on the parachute system from NASA
http://www.nasa.gov/exploration/systems/mpcv/canopy_of_confidence.html
There's a cool vid at the bottom of the NASA page, showing the capsule hitting the water at a high angle, then flipping over.

@GXst Well, Obama did say he wants NASA to "reach out to muslim nations"...right before he cancelled the space shuttle program. Don't vote for that piece of shit and maybe we can get the space program going again. Obama is castrating this once great nation.

@GXst Both China and India will be using Russian technology for a long time yet. Once the new NASA system is up and running it will leave the others for dead. Again.

@de_jung75 When something happens to our tiny, insignificant planet, mankind will go extinct. It's just a matter of time before we will be wiped out by some terrestrial or extraterrestrial catastrophe. You know, with our Sun expanding and then dying, supernovae creating gamma ray bursts, asteroids and such. Seems like a bad idea to be sitting on this speck of stardust waiting to die.

You got some points, dude!
But before the sun goes into "off-mode" (in far future) mankind will be wiped out anyway!
Wars, deseases, whatever...
Don`t you think?

nothing in the history of humankind has ever been more "worth it" than observation and exploration of our surroundings.
