NeoCube banned in Western Australia
After an almost total gun-ban in Western Australia now they are banning magnetic toys.
In Apple-Land there's an app for that. In Western Australia there's a law for that.
This place is literally a Police State.

I watched a special on the news about the "Bucky Balls" here in the US, just the other morning. The Government is trying to ban them and cause a production stop of these. These are designed and marketed for adult and Im sorry that kids swallow them, but that is the Parents fault. Not the Companies fault. They are only sold on the internet. Sold to adults, for adult use with an over abundant amount of warnings about children.
What a bunch of shit.

The reason behind the ban is that the toy poses a major health risk to children.
As I understand it, the deal is that when swallowed, the balls make their way into the intenstines. If two or more balls are swallowed, due to their strong attraction and the folding back and forth of the intestines, they can come together and pinch two intestine walls together.
Under the strong force of the two magnetic balls, that pinch point can then wear a whole through the intestinal wall, resulting in a majo More..

Is that as bad as swallowing a 10c piece?
Why not ban all coins?

@Zipperneck1321 Seems like a weak argument for a ban. Paperclips could probably do a lot of damage if swallowed, but that's not a good reason to ban them. It's a reason for parents to be responsible and not give them to young children. A ban seems a bit heavy handed. Maybe they were awed by the "sciency" explanation for why they are a potential hazard.

I would have to agree with you. People aren't stupid enough to leave cleaning products accessible to small children...
My intention was not to SUPPORT the ban, but simply to explain the reasoning behind it.

Cigarettes aren't toys, "NeoCube" is. Toys are meant for children, cigarettes aren't, that's why it's illegal to sell them to minors.

They should also ban needles, gasoline, water (it can KILL YOU in large quantities!), funnel web spiders, black mambas, great whites, and the irikanju!
All can potentially kill you.

@Saros Yep, we've got all the poisonous, bitey things, but we usually spray them, shoot them, trap them, hunt them, farm them for food or ignore them.

@Triode Or they bite, sting, eat, stab, or scare the shit out of you. A matter of maintaining the upper hand, shoe, foot, or spray can I guess.

@jum_runky Why should they supervise their children when a nanny state like Australia is already supervising grown men and women on how they should live their lives?

The reason for this new law is that idiot kids swallow the damn things and they are toxic, magnetic, stay in the intestine and create huge health problems for little kids.
On the other side; Australia is full of law makers whose hobby it is to make laws useless and otherwise.
Any lawyer will tell you that "more laws means less freedoms", so we really need fewer laws, not more.

OP didn't provide a link but assuming the ban is real, then yes. Swallowing more than one powerful magnet is incredibly dangerous, if the magnets become fixated to each other across sections of intestine, it can cause gangrene and death of the digestive tract.
Kids are known to swallow small objects and pieces of toy. And since this is a toy (most people stop finding magnets fascinating after they've had a chance to play with them at a young age), a ban (on groups of these magnets b More..

@passive_observer - many kids have injured or killed themselves with scissors, but no ban there. the parent has a responsibility for what their children play with and how they play with it.

@passive_observer since you are an idiot and are ready to willy nilly agree with a group of people who believe it is their responsibility to tell you how to do everything in your life, it would be greatly appreciated if you stfu and go back to passively observing. You have no grasp on the concept of personal responsibility or freedom. I suppose you would support a ban on forks too since children can poke an eye out with them

@passive_observer I didn't know that, about that a kid swallowing TWO magnets creates a big problem. That makes it even worse. Oh dear, and then there's those rotten little button batteries (I have about 30 of those here) which, if swallowed are intensely toxic and create huge health issues. They are in greeting cards and all sorts of kid's toys. Thanks for letting me know about the magnet thing.

Very tough rules down there. I sent my nephew a toy pirate musket (Pirates of the Caribbean) from Smyth's Toy Store and the customs in Australia contacted my sister and said it was illegal under their ownership of antique weapons law. If she attempted to claim it they would take her to court. It was made from plastic and cost €12. Can you fuckin' believe that!
