Exactly...you've just verbalized the central theme of this bit.

And there will never be another Zeppelin, since virtuosity is now considered uncool...abhorrent, even.

In today's pop culture, mediocrity is put on a pedestal, while virtuosity is ostracized.

    Sucks, hunh?

  • its so weird he has transformed from that dark figure from deer hunter, to the unstoppable gangsters like in suicide kings or true romance, to this strange comedy genius. weird man, one of the greats.

I attribute that to the music industry itself and the decline of the club scene.

in the old days you formed a band with 3 friends, you practiced in some garage for a few years, then in a shitty studio for a few years while playing pay to play clubs. then you do that for 5-15 years, then someone notices you, you get a break, then you are a fully fledged band with all the pain and suffering required to make great art.

nowadays, Disney/Whoever calls its owned affiliate music arm and tells them they want an actor to become a musician, that company assigns a producer, that producer calls dre/missy elliot to give the illusion of cool, then they pay their radio stations to pump it out, then they muscle the distributors to carry this album or else. Then the idiots watching TRL NEED to buy the new album. then after months of sales the musician finally goes on stage for the first time.

its terrible nowadays. maybe 1/10th of a percent of the music I bump into thats current I give a crap about.
