Memories of an alleged kidnapping in 1978 that became universally known as the 'Mormon sex-slave case' were stirred following the appearance of Bernann McKinney on television screens and in newspapers around the world with the five pit bull puppies that were cloned from her much-loved dog Booger's frozen DNA.
Reports from Seoul, explaining that Ms McKinney had paid £25,000 for the procedure to create five genetically identical replicas of her pet in the first transaction of its kind led to furious speculation about her true identity.
To those who remembered the sex slave scandal, Ms McKinney's face looked familiar. The features were older and heavier, but they were remarkably similar to a former Miss Wyoming whose antics provided shock and titilation in equal measure in the late 1970s.
Could it be that dog-loving Bernann McKinney from California was the same woman as Joyce McKinney, who made a notorious appearance at Epsom Magistrate's Court in 1979?
Joyce McKinney was charged with false imprisonment after she was accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting a 17-stone Mormom missionary called Kirk Anderson.
The pair had had an affair in the US and Anderson had moved to England shortly afterwards. But Joyce McKinney followed the object of her desire to Surrey.
After arriving in England, Joyce McKinney and her friend Keith May allegedly choloroformed the missionary and took him to a cottage they had hired.
May is said to have chained the prisoner to the bed and Joyce McKinney tried to get him to marry her.
At first, she read scriptures to him as she attempted to persuade him that he should father her children.
After repeated rejections, her tactics changed. She changed into a see-through nightie, played some romantic music, spread-eagled her captive on the bed, and is alleged to have sexually stimulated him and forced him to have sex.
Anderson claimed that, fearing that he would be imprisoned for weeks, he eventually relented and agreed to marry her. As soon as his chains were loosened, he escaped and went to the police.
Joyce McKinney and May were caught at a road block and charged with false imprisonment, which led to their appearance at Epsom.
During a hearing, it was suggested that perhaps Anderson was not such an unwilling participant when the couple were holed up in their cottage.
In court, Joyce McKinney's counsel said: "Methinks the Mormom doth protest too much...you have seen the size of Mr Anderson and you have seen the size of my client."
As internet rumours grew that the two women were one and the same person, Bernann McKinney flately denied them.
"That's garbage, that's rot," Bernann McKinney said.
After spending three months on remand in Holloway Prison, Joyce McKinney was bailed and met up with May, who had also been freed from custody. The pair fled to Canada on false passports.
The press eventually caught up with her and she began to play up to her sexual notoriety posing topless in men's magazines before the US authorities intervened.
Sadly, the woman who once admitted that she loved Anderson "so much that I would ski naked down Mount Everest with a carnation up my nose if he asked me to" became dogged by ill health, drug problems and psychiatric illness.
She was last heard of living in North Carolina where she was wheelchair bound for much of the time.
