Interesting, but misleading too. The absence of stores doesn't mean there are no shoppers available to buy goods. The store lease terms may be too high to turn a profit, especially if the mall was built 5+ years ago, when real estate was still overvalued. The mall owner would need high rents to cover their land & building investment.

First of all, the rent in most malls is very high. Then they often take a percentage of your gross sales. Third, why go to a mall when you can browse many stores and get the best deals online? Sorry folks, but things change. The cost of living has outpaced the increase in income for the last 20 years, and people have much less to discretionary income to blow. Probably not a bad thing since most of it was debt anyway.

Maybe the mall owners just price themselves out of the market with the rent...If they started offering those units for next to fuck all on a short term lease, I bet they would soon fill up and business would be booming again...
