Go back further and things change dramtically. Ancient greeks were faster, they ran at hell of a clip, faster than Bolt for sure. They had Astylos of Crotona, who was certainly a sub 9 second runner and Ladas of Argos (Λάδας), winner of the dolichos at 460 BC, he was said to be so fast that he almost was flying as he did not leave tracks on the ground of the stadium . Gixxardr, I don't have a fancy graphic of little computer men. But it doesn't take long to realize that ancient people were bigger, stronger and for sure faster.

A lot of ancient olympic tracks were fairly steep downhill, they were focused on speed/entertainment. Races were very fast and dangerous from what i read. And far faster than todays events. Its not apples to apples of course, but we are going back 776 years before the birth of Christ.
