A building partially collapsed in New York.
The partial collapse occurred in the Harlem neighborhood of Manhattan in a vacant four-story building under construction.
At least one car could be seen crushed under steel beams, bricks, and other pieces of rubble.

Firefighters are on the scene trying to determine what caused the collapse.
Officials say the building was in the process of being demolished when a large portion of its interior came down on its own.

There were no reports of anyone trapped or construction workers injured.

"I saw the building - it just looked like it was exploding," a witness told.

The collapse comes on an already tumultuous day in New York, where severe thunderstorms caused flooding in the subway system and left thousands of passengers delayed in the sweltering heat and humidity for hours.

It's not yet known if the weather played a part in the collapse.

  • There was no construction I see, it was a demolition job. Those tenements in Harlem were all built roughly between 1895 and 1910, and the brick walls support all the floors, if one or the other gives out a collapse like this can happen.
    The mortar between the bricks can best be described as hard sugar, once disturbed it crumbles easy and you can literally pull bricks out of the wall by hand.
