  • June bugs are extra thick this summer. Probably the mild winter. Aquariums are nice but they do require attention. I've got a simple ten gallon setup for the bullfrog my daughter raised from a tadpole five years ago. Little does "Kermie" know that I harbor frogicidal thoughts about him whenever his tank needs cleaning.

    • @john1054 The day i caught my turtle, we also brought home some bullfrog guppies. Unfortunately the turtle had a few bites out of their tails and then they died of infection. While i was learning about them online, i found out that they can take up to 3 years to be a frog! I would like to try them again in a dedicated tank.

    • @hotjobz bullfrog tadpoles, not guppies

  • Put cedar chips around the foundation of your house. Put DE mixed with boric acid around your windows and doors. Baggies, with a little water, hung on the outside of your windows will keep flies away, not sure why, maybe light refraction fucks with them, but it works.

    • @CannibalsCookpot Thanks for the tips! I don't have fly problems tho, its just Beatles and spiders mostly getting under the door. I am living in a apartment and the hallway gets bugs because others leave the damn door open. I'm going to try hedge balls, i guess people use them around here and swear by them. They keep away mice to so they say.

  • Dude,,, Call in the Orkin man....

They'll gas your house.... a day later you're back in there like new.

At that point change your threshold and seal any areas through which they are getting in.

    You'll be good to go.

    • @figatomek Well an exterminator is my last resort. I don't want to have to remove all the dishes and do all the extra work they require. If i do need that, i will let the manager take care of the orkin man. I been doing some search and destroy today and have eliminated some spiders that had eggs. I got some bug killer spray that is going down at the doors and i have used this carpet fresh stuff that has bug killer in it for the ants. Thanks for the advice, im taking notes from everyone! cheerz!

  • So, I take it you really like fish? Doesn't that constant bubbling (and I'm assuming maintenance) get on your nerves?

    Posted Jul-7-2012 By

    • @Immunity Well as far as the bubbling goes, a person gets used to that. They sell indoor water falls that mimic the sound my 75 gallon makes. Some people like the sound of running water. As far as maintenance goes, its not bad once they are established. I probably spend an average of 30 minutes a week and that's 3-4 aquariums.

  • Fix the door threshold, apply a perimeter barrier of insecticide twice a year around the house foundation and doorways, sprinkle Alpine dust behind the aquariums, and try 4-legged metal aquarium stands, which allow full access to the back/bottom of the tank.

    • @Truth-To-Power Yep that's my plan to have open stands here eventually. I will build one for the 75 gallon. Then i will be scattering around hedge balls. I never heard of alpine dust. I'll have to check into that. Thank you!

  • When you clean that carpet use hydrogen peroxide and non sudsy detergent. After it dries in a few days sprinkle some dessicant powder to keep dry (insects choke in extreme dryness and cannot thrive) then use baking powder for the remaining odor if any then thoroughly vacuum frequently after that.

I'm told that you can never really eliminate pests just make it uninhabitable for them.

    • @piruly Yea i agree, i dont think you can get ride of them 100% of the time. I have used some carpet fresh that has bug killer in it. Then i used bug killer spray around the doors ect. I am taking notes here on everyone's advice and appreciate all the help! Thanks brother! Peace ~

    • @hotjobz ---hah!--in my old apartment there was a vinyl tile floor---i had a cat--and the fleas were thick and they would live in the cracks--i took ammonia and bleach --mopped the floor with it---don't do this unless you want to die---

  • ---all those tanks are a lot of maintenance --- i used to have three---

    Posted Jul-10-2012 By

    • @ARNOLD-R-LANE Yea i had 4 here at one time. If you use the right light and create a habitat that is self sustaining, they just need periodic partial water changes every couple weeks. Once every month i clean or change filters and that's about it.

  • Best anti bugs* are:
    -Pyretrinoids (synthesis or natural)
-Nicotine (put all ur finished cigarets in a bottle of water, 20-30 is enought for 1,5l) put outside for 4 days, filtering and pulverization (its safe).

    *works on ants mosquitoes etc.
